Aaron Maybin is expected to sign with Jets Wednesday

A. Maybin Getty Images

Former Bills first round draft pick Aaron Maybin has weighed the offers, and he wants to join the Jets.

Rich Cimini of ESPNNewYork.com reports Maybin will take a physical for the Jets on Wednesday.  Barring any snags, he’s expected to sign with New York.

(Could a possible snag be when he gets on the scale and they see he weighs less than 230 pounds?)

Mid-August signings of recognizable names always get too much attention. The reality is that Maybin and most others signed around this time of year don’t even make the final 53-man roster.  If they do, it’s rare that they make a huge impact.

Like Vernon Gholston, Maybin has zero career sacks.

I like this. The kid is ONLY 23 years old. Maybe Rex can light a fire in his *** and make him gain some weight. Either way, very low risk and if he can add depth, then it’s worth it.

CAN’T WAIT for the haters with their clever food jokes!

From gholston to maybin damn the jets love having terrible pass rushers on their team

  3. Davo says: Aug 17, 2011 9:43 AM

What’s interesting is that by offering the one year Veteran minimum to both Shaun Ellis and Aaron Maybin, the Jets have effectively applied the same value to both.

    That can’t make Ellis happy!

  4. ICDogg says: Aug 17, 2011 9:45 AM

I don’t expect this particular signing to have much of an impact. But I don’t agree necessarily about guys signed around this time of year. Usually, though, the guys that can help are older veterans who have been successful in the past, but whose teams have found younger, capable replacements and want to dump salary. The prognosis for draft busts switching teams after training camp is not as promising.

As a Bills fan, I hope he makes the team and starts all 16 games.

Why not keep Gholston? He’s the same player and 40lbs heavier…

  10. medtxpack says: Aug 17, 2011 9:54 AM

basically Maybin for Brad Smith, Bills came out on top of that one…

  11. pleasantsurpriselefty says: Aug 17, 2011 9:54 AM

Thank God! I never thought they’d be able to replace Gholston’s production. Rex must think he is God able to get blood out of a stone. If you are a Pat’s fan you have got to love this– the Jets are picking up Bills castoffs. Mon Dieu!

What the hell, give it a shot. Nothing to lose but money. Maybe the Jets get lucky

  13. RexCanCoach says: Aug 17, 2011 9:55 AM

Jets defense is stout anyway. He will be last guy on the roster and expendable. No risk, only upside, nice job Mike.

  14. stubbyjones says: Aug 17, 2011 9:58 AM

This is nothing but an information grab from Maybin. However, the only he can tell him is ” um, we try to get the qb and the other guys on the D do the same until the whistle blows…..then i always get fooled on the screen pass and run right by it….then i run in a straight line like fast and get pancaked by a RB…special teams? We kick the ball then run or catch the ball….did i mention im a defensive wes craven?”

  15. pioniere says: Aug 17, 2011 9:58 AM

Rex Ryan thinks he’s smarter than everyone else, and weighs more than most people, so he probably knows a diet that will guarantee Maybin will be at 300 pounds by Christmas.

  16. ebenezergrymm says: Aug 17, 2011 9:59 AM

If Maybin signs with the Jets he wins this years “Luckiest Player in the League” award.

From Buffalo to the Jets. He moved on up like the Jeffersons.

  18. wutliss07 says: Aug 17, 2011 10:00 AM

they can’t be signing him for his talent, and if they really need an “edge on Buffalo”, they aren’t going to get any info out of him because he had NO idea what he was doing at there.

Not that big of a deal. They are basically paying the minimum to get the Buffalo Bills defensive playbook.

If they catch lightening in the bottle, they will look like geniuses. At the very least I see him playing special teams if he makes the roster.

It is called gamesmanship. Belicheck is the best in the NFL at it. Last year he picked up Woodhead to basically get the Jet’s playbook and he wound up being a huge contributor.

for all the jets fans that think Rex Ryan can turn him into something…HE WEIGHS 228 HAHA. Enjoy watching him get jacked up by running backs and 2nd string tackles. No chance he makes the team unless it’s as a safety.

    =================================

The Bears already signed Gholstone and believe it or not looked pretty decent against the Bills 2nd stringers so he might get a shot on the Dline rotation for the Bears……..The thing that’s funny about Maybin with his weight is he’s actually smaller than Sean Taylor(RIP) was……LOL…Taylor was 6’3″ 230 and Maybin is 6’4″ 226 so maybe they can move him to safety :p

  25. jetsarestacked says: Aug 17, 2011 10:23 AM

Gholston caught a lot of heat because he stunk at getting after the qb. However, he was actually good against the run. I don’t see how Maybin will contribute much besides being the designated pass rusher like ihedigbo was.

  26. pleasantsurpriselefty says: Aug 17, 2011 10:25 AM

OK, let me get this straight, you cut Danny Woodhead and he immediately becomes a mini folk hero in NE. You cut Gholston because he can’t play and has 0 sacks and then sign Maybin who is skinny and also has 0 sacks. Who is your player personnel guy, Stevie Wonder?

  27. bsizemore68 says: Aug 17, 2011 10:27 AM

It is not a win going to the jets from Buffalo, the only thing he wins is how to gain weight, at the table of the master, his problem is not weight, its between his ears. Bill

  28. Patskrieg dot com says: Aug 17, 2011 10:27 AM

Not even Rex Ryan has the ego on him to think he can turn Maybin around. He gets the Kevin O’Connell treatment here, i.e. as soon as they figure out everything he knows about the Bills system he gets the axe.

Then again maybe they get him to cut 5 pounds, teach him to run a go route and name him their new wide receiver.

  29. drunkendegenerate says: Aug 17, 2011 10:28 AM

    The Patriots cheated

  30. marvsleezy says: Aug 17, 2011 10:29 AM

Except for the fact that he is a defensive player and the Bills offense is getting to be pretty decent, that PUNT comment may have made sense – Nice try though

  31. thegonz13 says: Aug 17, 2011 10:31 AM

Maybin has “weighed the options”? What options? This stiff probably had only one offer on the table.

Besides, I’m pretty sure the “options” weighed more than he did!

  32. iflounder says: Aug 17, 2011 10:34 AM

maybin couldn’t even play special teams. he was cut by the bills. the bills. wrap your head around how bad you have to be for that to happen. outside of eric wood, fred jackson, stevie johnson, kyle williams, marcel dareus, byrd, maybe merriman and spiller, there’s no one on that team another team would jump at.

  33. scudbot says: Aug 17, 2011 10:34 AM

For all you people who think that Maybin will be converted to WR, safety, or anything else, the rap on him from his Combine is “Always runs straight upfield, allowing tackles to direct him around the pocket.”

  34. amishrifle says: Aug 17, 2011 10:39 AM

I think it’s funny that ESPN called him a pass rusher….The only time he rushed was when he received his signing bonuses back in ’09…….I knew after watching Orakpo workout video we should have taken him instead of a guy who spends way too much time thinking about his next faux-hawk…..

  37. pigskinswag says: Aug 17, 2011 10:43 AM

If this move was to pick the brain of a player from a division rival for an added edge, they should have signed Poslunzy, because Maybin had no idea what the hell was going on

  38. wwwmattcom says: Aug 17, 2011 10:48 AM

Wow, I think I gave the Jets too much credit, after considering Maybin I have to think their not as smart as their record.

Maybin was a guy who was under the tutelage of guys like Ray Lewis before he signed his rookie contract with Buffalo, if Ray Lewis couldn’t get this guy on the Ravens (didn’t even make an effort) then I am sold that this kid is washed up. I know the offensive playbook of every team the Jets play if Maybin gets on the field…

    1. Run at Maybin
    2. Pass over Maybin
    3. Touchdown over Maybin

  39. bturner032002 says: Aug 17, 2011 10:51 AM

you could send the bills a list of every play you are going to run and in what order you will run them a week before the game and still win.

Let me get this: the mighty Pats bring in every has been in the league and it’s a stroke of genius. The Jets take a flier on a young 1st round bust at Vet minimum – who knows how the contract will be structured for actual pay if he gets cut – and it’s a dumb move? I never heard of a DE getting released because he was too light, but my guess is his training will partly consist of many enjoyable meals that many players can’t touch! Could be that Maybin chooses the Jets because of the many fine area restaurants!
