Patriots unhappy with Brandon Meriweather

AP

The Patriots have given off a few obvious signs they aren’t happy with their safety situation.

They worked out Dashon Goldson, Renaldo Hill, and Darren Sharper during camp.  They haven’t signed any of them, but Shalise Manza Young of the Boston Globe reports the team is “unhappy” with Brandon Meriweather.  (And it has nothing to do with his off-field issues.)

Meriweather wound up making the Pro Bowl last year even though he was benched occasionally.  Over the last two days, the team has worked in Sergio Brown with the starting unit next to Patrick Chung.  The team also has veteran James Sanders, but he’s been injured.

New England’s cornerback position is deeper than it has been in years. Chung looks like a quality starter.  Despite the Pro Bowl nods, Meriweather looks like the weak spot of the Patriots secondary.

  1. No surprise to Pat’s fans. If he doesn’t get cut, this better be one hell of a wake-up call. Dude thought way too much of himself BEFORE making the Pro Bowl.

  2. Phenomenal athlete, but the Patriots so-called ‘bend but don’t break’ defensive style demands consistency from its safeties.

The one knock on Meriweather is that he has too many mental errors.

I think he is still a Probowl player, but maybe not what the Patriot scheme needs in the back end.

If he doesn’t stick in NE, look for him to be a good fit on a team that is more aggressive.

  3. Just another example of why Pro-Bowl voting is a joke. Merriweather got in last year on name recognition only, just like several other players.

  4. While this may be true, this article is completely misleading. At no point have the Pats said they were unhappy with him. Signs point to this being the case, but the way this is worded make it sound like he’s on the block. What is more likely is that he is being “motivated” by the Pats to get better.

  5. Still have an image of Braylon Edwards carrying him and McCourty (both Pro Bowlers) into the end zone during that playoff loss against the Jets.

    McCourty and Merriweather both overrated.

  6. one of his pro bowl appearances happened after 4 other safties backed out on injuries. There are only so many FS in the AFC.

But yeah, as a Pats fan I have never liked this guy. Often out of position, takes terrible angles, and often goes for the knockout hit instead of going for the ball

  7. Belichick pulled Meriweather from the game last year after his unnecessary dirty hit on Todd Heap. He hit Heap well after the play was over and almost broke Heap’s neck.

  8. The guy has always been too much of a freelancer for Belichik.

Trouble is, he was a 1st rounder and a 2X Pro-bowler, even though he really isn’t the good, both he and the Pats are going to expect commensurate compensation.

Patriots seem to be pretty good at taking advantage of stupid, desperate clubs though in trades. They really don’t have to deal him, and probably need his depth with Sanders down.

  9. When their 2nd round pick Ras-I Dowling returns (should be shortly), methinks he’ll immediately start working at the FS position.

  10. I know he was “only” the Stomper but I always like to pretend he was the Helmet-Swinger in the Miami-FIU brawl.

  11. He is so overrated. The only player in that secondary that I respect is mccourty. That kid can play.

McCourty looked good because other teams were always chasing the Pats on the scoreboard. When behind, saw him get beat plenty.

  13. Another media-driven storyline. His face didn’t fit from the start as far as fans + media are concerned. The fanbase was far more excited by the possibility of him be

When Mallett gets snaps over Hoyer: I wouldn’t read too much into it.

When Yeatman gets snaps over Hernandez: I wouldn’t read too much into it.

When Chung didn’t start games last year: Just playing match ups.

    When Meriweather doesn’t start: BENCHED.

When non-safeties are worked out: just due diligence.

Somehow Meriweather played more snaps than any Patriot safety last year.

  14. The Hoody & Boyz In Da’ Hood are the Dream Team. All of the cheaters and criminals on one team. Makes it easier for the NFL to keep their eye on them.

Then you are missing out, because Bodden is a really good corner. I think Chung will be really good too but I havent seen him put it together for a whole season yet.

  16. He’s really not good I don’t know why they’ve kept him around so long.
Don’t cite pro bowl appearances, that’s like you citing an award you won for journalism where you got your buddies and family to vote for you.
Pro Bowl appearances are meaningless, the only thing meaningful that comes from them is that the players get paid a little, get to go to hawaii and get a hawaiian groupie, and they get to put that on their resume.

  17. This guy is a big time clown. Got to Pro Bowls after other safeties begged out. If, and it is a big if, he does not get cut or traded, it will definitely be his last year in NE. No way they reup this guy with Welker and Mayo on the last years of their contracts.

  18. Meanwhile, somewhere in Oakland…

“Mr Davis, Coach Belichick on line 1, he says you need help at safety, and for a 1st Round pick you can have Merriweather…”

  19. It’s a disgrace that he made the Pro Bowl because he made headlines for hitting Todd Heap’s helmet with his own!!!

  20. Mike Mayock’s issue with Kenny Phillips was that he was “not Ed Reed.”

I love Mike’s work, but my advice to him: think again!

  21. @june20102002

McCourty overrated? Huh? He had a phenomenal rookie season and was very consistent, in addition to making big plays. I think he is properly rated as one of the best young up and coming cornerbacks.

  22. Most people choose to forget that Merriweather had 9 INTs between 08 and 09, and blame him for defensive problems that stem from a crappy pass rush.

He’s a notorious slow starter though, and looked really sluggish in camp this year. All I can hope is that somewhere Rodney Harrison is wringing his hands reading this, and getting ready to straighten him out.

  23. McCourty had 14 more tackles than Meriweather and 4 more INTS… 20 more solo tackles than Meriweather. 17 passes deflected vs. Meriweather’s 6.. Good riddance Meriweather.

  24. The Pats and are bigger than this guy and he can be replaced before he is out the door.

For all those people that want him. May I suggest you get Sunday Ticket and have a look before you buy. There will be no returns even if you have the receipt.

Maybe to someone who doesn’t know much about football. Or watch the Patriots often. On McCourty, you’re going to eat those words some day.

I’m a Pats fan, so I can tell you I saw every game. His best games were against teams chasing the Pats. The three games against the Jets last season, Cothery beat him in the end zone, in game one, as did Edwards. Game two was a blow out, and game three he was dragged into the end zone. Against the Browns he was beat a few times. The point is, when teams were heave hoving passes just to catch up he made big plays, lets not kid ourselves, we had one of the worst defenses in history and not for the offense, it would have been a terrible season. This from an objective Pats fan, not the kool aid group who hover this site.

  27. I said long ago that since Dimitroff and Pioli have left town the Patriots’ drafts have sucked.

I brought up Meriweather and Butler being huge disappointments, and all I heard was “one of the top secondaries in the NFL.”

    Keep up that chatter.

  28. We got a spot for u in the dream team.. I member watching that draft and the eagles really wanted merriweather and then right before their pick the pats stole em…. And then they moved back and picked kolb.. smart move in the end but anyways I still would be willing to give him a shot… Compete with Kurt and Jarrett

  29. I’ve seen a couple of refrences to McCourty being overrated. W..W…..WWWHHAAAAAT!?!?
I understand you may not be a Patriots fan, but, come on! Even Rex Ryan and Revis give Devin mad props. He is an amazing player and will put up pro bowl numbers for many years to come.

    Guess when Meriweather was drafted?
    April 2007.

I know you loathe the Pats and Brady and are one of those boring “OMGZ!!!111!!! 111 Cheater!11111111!!!!” people but it would behoove you to have facts once in a while. I bet it burns you up that the REAL Greg Jennings LOVES Brady second only to his own QB. I heard him say it recently. 😛

And if you are judging the 09, 10, and 11 drafts as busts already that’s just silly, and a product of more blind hatred from you.

    Color me shocked.

  31. we had one of the worst defenses in history

    You’re delusional.

As shaky as that defense was, it wasn’t even in the ballpark of worst in history.

Not defending Merriweather, it was as dirty as you can get. But take of the Ravens glasses off and put them back in your purse. “He hit Heap well after the play”??? Really, it was milliseconds after the catch, Merriweather left his feet and jumped up into the air to make contact. It isnt like Heap was on the ground. It was dirty because he attacked Heap’s head, not because it was late.
