Vick throws three interceptions in one half

Mike Tomlin, Michael Vick AP

Michael Vick just doesn’t look the same after his interview with Will Leitch. Call it the GQ curse.

The Eagles quarterback completed only 5-of-12 passes for 47 yards in one half of work Thursday, with three passes caught by the Steelers. Vick seemed so frustrated after the last interception that he took on Troy Polamalu at full speed to tackle him.

(Vick’s form wasn’t ideal, but he was effective.)

Vick wasn’t alone in his struggles.  The Steelers possessed the ball for over 23 minutes of the first half, racking up a 21-0 lead. Philly’s defense couldn’t get off the field on third down.   New Pittsburgh pickup Jerricho Cotchery had two grabs, including a 20-yard touchdown.

Vick’s night will probably get a lot of play on Friday, but we have a hard time getting too worked up about preseason results unless the player is in a position battle.

The Eagles quarterback has enjoyed a strong camp by all accounts until the rough night Thursday. He also led a touchdown drive in the preseason opener.

Gee, it’d be a shame if this whole “Dream Team” thing blew up in Philly’s face.

    Godell suggested throwing near Polamalu.

  4. melonnhead says: Aug 18, 2011 10:14 PM

  6. eaglesnoles05 says: Aug 18, 2011 10:15 PM

If the eagles struggle, it’s gonna be cuz they are getting totally blastedly run over by every team. MUST make an LB move to compete this year. Otherwise, a year away at least.

I know it’s just the preseason, but do you think that the media could let it go for just a couple of days now?

    First preseason game -

“He picked up right where he left off! Eagles are going to the Super Bowl! Dream team!”

    Second preseason game

“Oh, it’s just preseason! Don’t overreact it doesn’t mean anything!”

    lol.

  14. jh500 says: Aug 18, 2011 10:17 PM

Peyton Manning throws 6 interceptions in one game in the regular season, and it’s all good. Vick throws 3 in a preseason game, and the Eagles are done.

You’re defending him based on his practices? I guess Kyle Orton must be your favorite QB? :P

You’re right fundamentally: it’s the preseason, mistakes are best made here and now, but a guy’s competency when wearing a red shirt is just about as meaningless as the outcome of these games.

  41. everybodyhitswoohoo says: Aug 18, 2011 10:38 PM

In his second preseason game last season Mike Vick went 1 of 5 for 6 yards with 2 INTs, getting sacked 3 times. Presumably, against a second-string defense, rather than against the starting defense of the reigning AFC Champions.

    He’ll be fine.

  42. Keyser Söze says: Aug 18, 2011 10:40 PM

  43. bullethead527 says: Aug 18, 2011 10:41 PM

That Eagles O line looks terrible vs that Steelers front 7, my daughter can get through that weak O line and get to Vick LOL, they better do something, and putting your O line coach as a DC, IDK, its preseason if Eagles lose their 1st 2 or 3 games in the reg season then you eagle fans should start to worry!!!!!

  44. realitypolice says: Aug 18, 2011 10:41 PM

Anyone watching this game knows that Vick’s interceptions are far from the Eagles biggest problem.

    Their defense is fugly.

I don’t know which is the worse idea- a 6′ 220 pound rookie starting at MLB or a career offensive line coach as DC.

Not saying this isn’t a good team, but they are far from flawless.

  45. everybodyhitswoohoo says: Aug 18, 2011 10:42 PM

And RE: run defense, they were kinda missing their best two run stopping DTs in Patterson and Dixon. Both of whom are expected to be back by the time the season starts.

Seriously. I know that any bad preseason performance is gonna be magnified cause of all the stuff the Eagles have done this offseason, but the Eagles literally haven’t won more than two games in a preseason since before Andy Reid arrived here 13 years ago. There are a few causes for concern, sure, but people who are ready to bury this team after this game are getting way ahead of themselves, just like everyone who was willing to crown them Super Bowl champions two weeks ago. Give it some time.

  57. stinkfingers says: Aug 18, 2011 10:54 PM

  73. dtrb10 says: Aug 18, 2011 11:15 PM

they dont even have one linebacker that could be a top backup for the steelers

  76. snowpea84 says: Aug 18, 2011 11:23 PM

  79. msg372 says: Aug 18, 2011 11:26 PM

As an Eagles fan who wanted to see Mike Vick fail, I was pleased when he was godawful last preseason. We all saw how that worked out. We always suck in the preseason as Reid calls situational plays to test position battling players. Although concerning, this really means nothing.

  80. dmq13 says: Aug 18, 2011 11:39 PM

I’ll only be concerned when this happens in an actual game.

  81. bleedgreen4life says: Aug 18, 2011 11:39 PM

hahaha. I’m an Eagles fan and yes I will admit that they played pretty bad but wow you guys have so much hatred for a team that went out and did work this free agency. I don’t know if its just jealousy or that fact that your team that you root for just flat out blows. I still don’t understand why everyone is calling us a “dream team” because we are far from it. They will lose some games this year. No one expects them to go 16-0.

  82. skinsdiehard says: Aug 18, 2011 11:41 PM

As as one of the FEW Eagles fans that didn’t get over excited about last week I will say the thing i said, We’ll see after week 5 where everyone is at in this league.

This game was brutal. Pitt played very well and the Eagles looked sloppy. However, I did notice that Pitt was really trying extra hard because of last week and i noticed the Eagles trying a lot of new stuff on D like playing with the three corners on the field a lot. Don’t get me wrong the Eagles did not do well running any plays. As far as vick and ints. I could care less its the preseason and the guy is going to try throws he wouldn’t do in the regular season to try and give guys a chance to make a play. Vick still does need to work on his Blitz reads before the snap. I am sure Andy will help cover that up with a lil bit more of a running game since they have two strong backs to run with. I was still impressed with the D line in getting to the QB, Don’t forget Ben Rapistburg’s one greatest quality is being able to move around in the pocket and negate sure sacks.

I still think the Eagles and Falcons are the Best teams in the NFC and i still think the PAts, Ravens, and the steelers are the best in the AFC. My guess is the one of those teams that stays healthiest will win the superbowl.

  101. halo81 says: Aug 19, 2011 5:32 AM

    I love the media.

Last week the Eagles defensive has 8 sacks and runs rough shot on the Ravens and they’re the “Dream Team”. Also, Vick takes them right downfield for a TD and he’s awesome.

This week, the Eagles defense gets killed and Vick throws three picks and they stink, so the “Dream Team” is a bust.

It’s the preseason in a shortened offseason. Stop putting a spin on everything.

When real games start being played it’s time to care.

Jesus this is annoying, both with the positive and negative hype.

  102. cleverbob says: Aug 19, 2011 5:48 AM

Everyone take a deep breath, and pat yourself on the back. Now you can feel vindicated because the team that YOU insist on calling the ‘dream team’ played poorly in a preseason game.

With all the new acquisitions you can’t expect to just plug them in and have instant cohesiveness. Hopefully it gets turned around in time for the regular season.

    ———————————-

The “self-proclaiming titles” thing is actually pretty funny because the Eagles players are not walking around calling themselves the “dream team”. The announcers during the game called the eagles “the self-proclaimed dream team” but really, one player (Young) before his first practice said that before his first practice with the team. Since then not a single player or coach has called the Eagles “A Dream Team”. In fact they have gone out of their way to say that they don’t think of themselves that way.

Vick really needs to improve his defensive reads. It’s a reminder that he has gotten this far mainly by his athletic talents rather than his decision making ability. He will make average defenses look bad but will struggle with his reads against good blitzing defenses.

I would’ve rather kept Kolb but I have faith that Reid and company will have Vick ready for week 1.

Could last year’s performance by Vick be another version of Randall Cunningham from 1998? It wouldn’t surprise me.

Cunningham set the world on fire in ’98, after coming off the bench for an injured Brad Johnson. RC played lights out all year (until the NFC Championship game anyway), signed a huge contract extension, began 1999 as the starter and played so poorly, he was benched in favor of Jeff George, just six games into his new five year contract. He was released after the ’99 season.

I think Philly took a huge chance trading away Kolb. If Vick falters, this dream team won’t make the playoffs.

Vick really needs to improve his defensive reads. It’s a reminder that he has gotten this far mainly by his athletic talents rather than his decision making ability. He will make average defenses look bad but will struggle with his reads against good blitzing defenses.

I would’ve rather kept Kolb but I have faith that Reid and company will have Vick ready for week

Vick has NEVER been a pocket passer. Not at Virgina Tech, not in Atlanta, and not while incarcerated in the big house. It looked to me like Reid is trying to reign in Vick and make him a pocket thrower and keep him from running….which may or may not be good news.
He’ll be broke in half by mid-season if he runs like he used to, and he’ll be the new leader in INT’s if he stays in the pocket.

First chink in the “dream team” armor and the weakest link in the chain.

The fans are the ones that have gotten over the top with it….kind of like MN’s fans when they seriously thought Burnt Favre was going to repeat his stellar season and end it on a Super Bowl TD instead of a season ending pick for the 4th straight time in 4 years.

It’s called Karma….and it’s coming to Philly cheesesteak stand near you.

    Preseason or not…

    Vick was terrible….

Young was terrible (which is the real story of this game as he was out to prove he’s a strong backup when Vick gets hurt)

    Kafka was strong…

    Philly is in trouble….

This game reminded me why I love the Phillies.

The Eagles didn’t take out Pig Ben with a career ending injury, so now I have to hope the next team in line does it.
