What we learned: Thursday night

Chad Ochocinco

The start of the second preseason week is here. Which means we’re one week closer to the real stuff.

Patriots 31, Bucs 14

1. The Patriots starting offense looks ready for the season to start. Tom Brady and practically all his offensive teammates looked crisp while jumping out to a 21-0 first quarter lead. They led 28-0 at halftime, with Brady still in the lineup.

2. Patriots linebacker Jerod Mayo may rush the passer more this year.  He was a terror on Thursday night.  The Bucs quarterbacks were hit almost every down by some Pats pass rusher.

3. Both Bucs lines were manhandled. A couple bright spots for Tampa: defensive linemen Adrian Clayborn and Gerald McCoy.  Clayborn, a first round pick, looks like an immediate impact starter. McCoy seems ready for a second year leap.

4. A couple Patriots took huge hits. Chad Ochocinco got back up and caught a short touchdown after taking a helmet-to-helmet hit. Danny Woodhead had to leave after getting leveled on a punt return late in the game.  He was wobbly.

5. Ryan Mallett is mortal. A week after looking terrific, the Patriots rookie threw a pick six. He only threw for 71 yards on 14 attempts in the second half. His accuracy was spotty.  Brian Hoyer remains the favorite for the backup job.

Steelers 24, Eagles 14

1. The Steelers may need to call Flozell Adams after seeing two of their left tackles get hurt.

2. Mike Vick doesn’t like the “Dream Team” label, then did his best to lower expectations for the team. Vick threw three picks in one half; Vince Young threw another.

Mike Kafka had a nice night against the deep reserves to put some pressure on Young.

3. Jerricho Cotchery could make an impact in Pittsburgh.  He caught two passes for 49 yards in his first Steelers appearance, including a 20-yard score.

4. Eagles rookie starting middle linebacker Casey Matthews may not be ready. Philly has to think about moving their linebackers around after a rough outing from Matthews.  The Eagles defense couldn’t get off the field.

The Eagles might be the dream team… but the Steelers are the redeem team!

Wait, what do you mean those witty monikers have already been taken?

  2. axespray says: Aug 18, 2011 11:29 PM

man this is a slow month ….
didn’t we invent those “Time Box” things yet?
I’d like to just load it up with chicken wings, my Rodgers gameday jersey, and just wake up on Opening kickoff day.

  3. chargerdillon says: Aug 18, 2011 11:30 PM

The only way Vick couldve looked worse in that game was if he kicked a puppy.

If that’s the guy you’re expecting you to lead you to the superbowl, something tells me come the end of the season you’ll wish you still had Mcnabb

  4. hailvictory10 says: Aug 18, 2011 11:30 PM

Its so funny….we have seen this story a hundred times….and I am a Redskins fan

You CANT just throw a team together, a bunch of high priced free agents and win a Super Bowl

Every single team is going to circle you on the schedule

Football is the ultimate TEAM game (see last years Packers and Steelers)

    Eagles = 8-8 or 9-7

    BUST

    HTTR

  5. kibawib says: Aug 18, 2011 11:34 PM

What we learned is that Casey isn’t on the same HGH as his brother, Clay. Explains the lack of impact plays. No doubt dad Bruce will give Casey some pills–I mean pointers–and get him on the right track. No need to worry Eagles fans. The NFL won’t test for HGH so no chance Casey gets caught.

The Empty Trophy Case Clan is taking a collective diarrhea right now.

Extra quiet in the city of BROlove right now..

  7. bossisforboston says: Aug 18, 2011 11:38 PM

Speedy assessment here.. Let me add : Andre Carter was all over the QB’s, and the fact that first round pick Solder was to blame for a sack… Even though he did a good job otherwise..

  8. flagstaffphotos says: Aug 18, 2011 11:38 PM

What – no PFT love for Ben? Dude was making them pay on all the blitzes.

  9. rodneyharrisonstruckstick says: Aug 18, 2011 11:39 PM

The Patriots Offense wasn’t nearly as surprising as the D unit up front. S. Ellis and Fat Albert didn’t even play.
-The D line rotation and LB’s looked scary good against TB’S starting O-line. Constant pressure. Not even close. watch the 1st quarter replay on NFLnw if you can. you’ll see.

  10. painterdude says: Aug 18, 2011 11:39 PM

    2. Mike Vick doesn’t like the “Dream Team” label, then did his best to lower expectations for the team. Vick threw three picks in one half; Vince Young threw another.

You media guys love to love you some Eagles and make up excuses for them. Nice try, not buying it! Preseason or not 3 picks and what 5 completions in a half of play is horrendous! Way to go Beagles! Oh I meant Dream Team

  14. dmq13 says: Aug 18, 2011 11:43 PM

Eagles really need a look at improving that LB group. The safeties also looked pretty weak in zone coverage…Hate to read a whole lot into a preseason game…but those are just the facts!

  15. wtfru2 says: Aug 18, 2011 11:43 PM

Flozell hell, Bryant McKinnie has ties with the head coach….

  16. YouMadCauseImStylingOnYou says: Aug 18, 2011 11:44 PM

A halfway competent run game will be able to trounce the Eagles defense.

They have Vince Young to thank for the Miami Heat level of scrutiny they will face every single snap.

  17. trbowman says: Aug 18, 2011 11:51 PM

    What we learned –

Terry Bradshaw was incredibly drunk during the broadcast.

  18. halftermguv says: Aug 18, 2011 11:54 PM

Steelers completely dominated the first half on both sides of the ball. Roethlisberger was 8 for 12 for 125 yds and 2 TD passes for a 140.8 QBR. But why mention that when you can lead the game summary about two tackles with tweaked knees?

  19. bullethead527 says: Aug 18, 2011 11:55 PM

So Mallet plays against 2nd stringers instead of 4th stringers and now Cam’s numbers look better. LOL there goes his 130 passer rating…. Wait to Cam plays vs 1st stringers and Mallet plays vs 1st stringers. Oh and we play Bucs twice and Cam will light them up twice LOL

  20. andymc58 says: Aug 19, 2011 12:01 AM

“Both Bucs lines were manhandled. A couple bright spots for Tampa: defensive linemen Adrian Clayborn and Gerald McCoy”

Kafka’s gonna be a problem for VY. I’ve got a feeling ol’ Vince is picturing himself as almost a co-starter or something. I don’t think he understands the situation.

I don’t think he understands a lot of things.

  35. rickycubane says: Aug 19, 2011 2:12 AM

WOW.. the steelers made my eagles look like a joke…

im not gonna freak out .. nor should anyone else.. its just pre season.. but that being said it was an awful first half and the steelers kept all the big plays in check.. we couldnt get anything going for the most part.. i think that our defense came out strong but the Cullen Jenkins penalty hurt us momentum wise.. 9 plays 32 yards up until that point.. and then assante let up the big pass play on the ill timed blitz by DRC.. if DRC doesnt pull up then Big Ben doesnt make that pass… The Eagles are clearly not playing as a cohesive team yet.. but thats to be expected 2nd week of preseason.. hopefully another week of practice gets things right.. still not worried about the real games yet.. 11-5 should be realistic

  36. isphet71 says: Aug 19, 2011 2:22 AM

Going to be a long season for the Eagles if Vick isn’t right. What scares me is that amidst all the hype of the new signings, people forgot that he was a mere mortal the second half of last season and have completely taken for granted that he’s going to be a superstar again this year.

I also have a sneaking suspicion that the Bucs overachieved last year and will come back to reality this year. They also faded towards the end of the season, and I’m not convinced their offseason moves will do anything to sway that momentum.

  37. stillerfan82 says: Aug 19, 2011 2:29 AM

What we learned: Without the Steelers making big moves in the off season, they still seem to be one of the top contenders.

  38. vikesfan0717 says: Aug 19, 2011 2:42 AM

What’s that Vick ? One year wonder you say !

  39. hawkapalooza says: Aug 19, 2011 2:45 AM

    Ooohhh, ahhhhh…sparkly, shiny Dream Team!!…*yawn*

Too bad if Vick does this routine against other good teams, or gets injured, it is gonna be up to Vince “I Quit!” Young to lead them.

And I would take T-Joke over him.

You’ll get to hear the 12th man this year Philly!! Maybe you can talk smack then?

  40. duncanthecat says: Aug 19, 2011 2:46 AM

3 CB’s, 0 LB’s and 0 Safeties does not add up to a stout defense.

Bad OL = Injuries to QB and RB’s

In this league, and quality CB does not land a team an above quality Tackle. Eagles are in trouble on both sides of the ball.

  41. nctech says: Aug 19, 2011 2:51 AM

Does having the name Matthews on one’s jersey automatically demand having long, stringy hair as well?

  42. jeffreydee says: Aug 19, 2011 3:05 AM

Both Bucs lines were manhandled. A couple bright spots for Tampa: defensive linemen Adrian Clayborn and Gerald McCoy. Clayborn, a first round pick, looks like an immediate impact starter. McCoy seems ready for a second year leap.

Great. But what about the manhandling?

    4. A couple Patriots took huge hits. Chad Ochocinco got back up and caught a short touchdown after taking a helmet-to-helmet hit. Danny Woodhead had to leave after getting leveled on a punt return late in the game. He was wobbly.”

    And so are your readers.

Are you even trying to construct coherent paragraphs?

Mike Vick doesn’t like the “Dream Team” label, then did his best to lower expectations for the team.

Then ate ice cream. Then went to bed.

  48. cleverbob says: Aug 19, 2011 5:36 AM

I’m glad all the experts on here have now declared the Eagles dead on arrival. I hate to see them get completely outmatched, but better for it to happen now so they can try to make the necessary changes. There’s still plenty of time for them to gel on both sides of the ball.

Hopefully this quells all the ‘dream team’ nonsense.

  49. Matt-NC says: Aug 19, 2011 5:48 AM

Week 4, Andy Reid dials his phone, a voice with a bit of a southern drawl answers, “Hello?”.

    Reid, “Bret, how’s it going?”

    ……

  50. 1historian says: Aug 19, 2011 7:04 AM

message to the TB DB who intercepted Mallett’s (stupid) pass in the 3rd quarter and brought it back for a td – when your team is getting its clock cleaned AT HOME – and you finally do something good and profit from a stupid play by a rookie QB – forget the dance. You have NO idea how stupid it looks.

FYI – I am an old fart of 67+ springs and in my day if someone did that he would have gotten his clock cleaned by his own teammates. The baddest and best running back ever was Jim Brown and he never came close to doing something like that. He would score a TD and hand the ball to the ref. The message was clear – “I’ll be back.”

  51. cbass59 says: Aug 19, 2011 7:17 AM

  52. imopen7 says: Aug 19, 2011 7:30 AM

So thats the headlines?”brady and bunch are ready”….”Steelers have two hurt lineman”. WTF?! Ben looked awesome….not “awesum-wah”. Steelers responded from last week’s poor outing, as a good team will. The “dream-team” looked like they had a convicted felon and head-case at qb…..two corners that suck…and a coach who couldnt stop sucking down p’manti sammiches. GO STEELERS!

  53. greenbird1 says: Aug 19, 2011 7:30 AM

What we learned is what we already knew. New England or Pittsburgh will have a “Super” season. I can’t wait for the Eagles’ pathetic fans to realize that the Eagles should not have traded Kevin Kolb and start whining like always. The great teams have a solid plan and stick with it until it is completed. Losers like the Eagles put a plan together, i.e., drafting Kolb – a promising quarterback to replace McNabb, and alter the plan the first chance they get. Always changing – never the consistency/stability that is always associated with the Steelers. That is why these teams can never win . . . Here we go Steelers, here we go.

Don’t get your tits in a wringer over some of these performances good or bad.

You don’t really know what kind of game plan was executed or what each team was experimenting with. We’ve all seen teams fo 4-0 and win no games and teams go 0-4 and win super bowls.

  63. fthrvic says: Aug 19, 2011 9:46 AM

2.5 corners…..DRC is overrated and I think the Cards will end up looking like winners in the Kolb trade, not because of Kolb’s performance but because of DRC’s lack of performance.

  64. aproudlionsfan says: Aug 19, 2011 9:53 AM

Matthews plays too high, he just need to lower his running stance. What i saw was a good linebacker but he gets knocked off balance too easily. Lowering his running stance can correct that.

And Oldbyrd, to say that Casey Matthews sucks period is a bit of a stretch. This is his second-ever NFL effort. At least wait until the regular season to spew bile on a rookie.

If it wasn’t for his name he might not of been drafted. He’s a good kid, but, his size and speed put him nowhere. Too slow for safety and far to small for ….actually any linebacker spot.
