Andy Reid: “We all stunk”

Andy Reid AP

Andy Reid’s assessment of the Eagles’ preseason loss to the Steelers’ on Thursday night was blunt.

“We all stunk,” Reid said.

It’s a close call who stunk more, the Eagles’ first-string offense or the Eagles’ first-string defense. Michael Vick led four drives with the offense, which ended in three interceptions and a punt. The defense faced the Steelers’ first-string offense for two drives and gave up two touchdowns.

“The obvious is too many turnovers and our inability to get off the field against a good football team,” Reid said.

It’s not completely accurate to say the Eagles all stunk. Backup quarterback Mike Kafka completed 14 of 19 passes for 160 yards, with two touchdowns and no interceptions. Unfortunately, Kafka didn’t throw those two touchdown passes until the fourth quarter, after the Eagles had already fallen behind 24-0, and when the Steelers’ defense had a bunch of guys on the field who won’t make the team.

But unless you’re a Philly fan counting on Kafka leading the team this year, you can’t be happy with how the Eagles looked. When the starters were on the field, it was the Steelers who looked like a dream team, and the Eagles who stunk.

On a related note, Reid also admitted that he is fat, that he hasn’t mastered clock management, and that he leaves a great deal to be desired as a father.

There’s absolutely no way that everyone in the media isn’t going to run with “the Dream Team” at every opportunity this year is there? The Eagles are not calling themselves the dream team.

Yes, the Eagles stunk but it’s week 2 of the preseason, not week 10 of the regular season so let’s not proclaim that the Eagles are doomed this year just yet.

The only positives from this game were that the Eagles emerged healthy from it and that any player who thought they didn’t have to give 100% got knocked down a peg. It should be a great week of practice.

A preseason game like this helps improve the Eagles more than an easy win. They still have plenty of growing to do as a team and this will help.

The Steelers showed that they were a great veteren team on both sides of the ball. With little turnover on both sides of the ball that is to be expected. They are who we thought they were :p.

My only real concern coming out of this game is Vicks confusion reading defenses. That is something he should’ve had down long ago and has nothing to do with the new acquisitions to the team. Not to mention it’s public knowledge that he’s been working at getting better at it this offseason.

  3. jkosh says: Aug 19, 2011 6:57 AM

I would say over rated… But the talent level can’t be denied. It’s a long season… Packers and Pats / steelers are still the teams to beat.

Id rather him throw 3 picks and they all stink in week 2 of the preseason, since these games mean NOTHING

In the immortal words of John McKay. They can’t run, they can’t pass but made up for it with poor tackling. Hey Andy the NFL is not Pee-wee football
so Pee-wee LB’s won’t work! We would have been better off asking the Steelers to use their back-ups.

    1. Eagles were playing without 3 defensive tackles.

    2. Eagles have a new defensive coordinator

    3. Eagles have a ton of new faces on defense, and are learning a new system.

The offensive poor play is inexcusable, but I think much too much is being made of the defense.

  30. sonvar says: Aug 19, 2011 8:24 AM

If there was a game to fall flat on your face and be exposed it’s much better to have it happen in the preseason. Granted I didn’t expect that terrible but now the coaches can point at this game and show what all went wrong. The only good thing that came out the of the starters was the running game which actually was seeing some success.

  31. laxer37 says: Aug 19, 2011 8:26 AM

Just a sign of things to come for filthadelphia, you have s short training camp and offseason and you decide to bring in tons of new players and then proclaim you’re super bowl bound before the season even starts, the only thing the eagles are bound for is an 8-8 season with Vick having less than 20 combined tds, enjoy your dream team philly, do yourselves a favor and keep your Phillies red on as long as you can

  37. cowboysfan18 says: Aug 19, 2011 8:33 AM

  38. gaffney19 says: Aug 19, 2011 8:35 AM

First of all, it is the preseason so who cares. I actually am glad they looked like crap since it will remind them that thhey still have to put in the work to win in this league. Secondly, the steelers just played like crap in their first preseason game and with a veteran team as good as the steelers are, you had to expect they would come out at home ready to play. Third, I keep reading these comparisons to the redskins and how they have gone about free agency in the past and how the eagles will find out it doesn’t work. Let’s be honest for a moment people. The redskins always over payer in terms of money and years for a majority of the players they signed, not to mention the players they overpayed for and signed were guys that mostly stink to begin with. Not quite the same since the eagles signed proven veterans and superstars at reasonable contract values. Only namdi has any guaranteed money going forward. Most of you people posting have no clue what your even talking about. So to all the birds fans out there, let these morons yap all they want and don’t justify their attempts to get us all fired up by responding to their tired and lame dream team remarks or redskin comparisons. We know the truth and the truth is aside from the packers and steelers and patriots, all of these other teams and their fans are jealous about the direction our team is headed and the aggressive moves by our front office. Go birds.

Can we bury this stupid “Dream Team” nonsense once and for all?

It didn’t make sense when it started and it doesn’t make sense now.

The media should be very proud of themselves for taking what was a throw away line from Vince Young (VINCE YOUNG!?!) and running with it.

Multiple people, from players to Andy Reid himself have said it was nonsense. It’s not like the team is using it as an official slogan.

I’m not an Eagles fan, but I think using something that was said by a back up QB with a history of saying dumb things to bash them over the head every time something bad happens to them is a little unfair.

First off, if you’re going to quote Aerosmith, at least get the lyric right.

Second, it’s foolish to put much weight behind a pre-season game, but it’s also a little fun to see the “dream team” wake up to some much-needed reality.

They’re a team with real questions at linebacker, overall defensive questions that need to be answered (yes, even with Nnamdi), and a quarterback who can’t stay healthy for a season.

Vick is just like McNabb in that he can look awesome one week, and pedestrian the next. Let’s see if he can stay on the field for 16, and then see if he can perform at a high level for 16. I mean, the guy just barely cracked 3,000 yards last year (and that was his first time!)

  47. calloustongue says: Aug 19, 2011 8:54 AM

Gameplan to beat Eagles. Run up the middle and throw to the TE. Their LBs and Safeties are god-awful. I know it’s preseason, but no matter how you spin it, 3 INT’s that weren’t even close by your starter, isn’t exactly the best way to come out of the gate.

At least the Eagirls don’t have to worry about that dream team label anymore!

  48. ny82jy says: Aug 19, 2011 8:56 AM

  49. dickroy says: Aug 19, 2011 8:58 AM

Hey skippy, Vick only played in 12 games last year and I think in one of the 12 he only played the first quarter, so he really compiled all of his stats in a little over 11 games. So add in 5 more games at the rate he was playing and he was puching 4,000 passing yards, 30+ TD passes and 1,000 rushing yards and 10+ rushing TD’s. Yeah that dude stinks. I’m not quite sure how he is even still a starting QB.

  54. hoobsher says: Aug 19, 2011 9:16 AM

what? we lost a game? OH MY GOD WE MUST BE THE MOST OVERRATED TEAM IN ALL OF SPORTS HISTORY!
    #sarcasm

vince young, a 1 year signing to back up our current qb, said, ONE TIME, dream team, and then everybody and their media liaison started scrutinizing the eagles for every single mistake and bad play they make.

newsflash, the eagles arent perfect. andy reids coaching style doesnt allow it. we are going to lose games and have bad performances, thats just how its been and how it will be, regardless of how many star players we get. this was no excep–actually, yes it is an exception, because this is the preseason. so we had a bad practice outing. shoot.

if the eagles start losing miserably in the first month or two of the regular season, THEN you can start saying how we were overrated, because youd be 100% right.

but i implore: dont start yelling DREAM TEAM every time we let up a touchdown or punt it away because thats really obnoxious.

  55. kevinfromphilly says: Aug 19, 2011 9:19 AM

Not surprising the Steelers came out hot after getting shellacked by the Redskins last week. Good teams usually do that, so we’ll see how the Eagles respond next week. Actually, I was expecting worse from the birds, given the lack of OTAs and short camp. The first Steeler drive only continued because of a stupid facemask penalty, and the Polomalu interception was tipped. Nobody got carted off, unlike the Steelers (hope they aren’t too bad). All in all, a bad game but hopefully a good learning experience.

first of all vince young is an idiot. to include himself as being added to something and then declare it a dream team is idiotic. lebron wasn’t thrown out of cleveland for walking out on the cavs….

secondly, one thing andy has always been able to do is bounce back from setbacks. no one was seriously injured, and there are good reasons to expect this talent to begin to gel on both sides of the ball as they go beyond their first three weeks of remedial work after the lockout.

third, there are genuine questions about the defensive scheme, which hasn’t really been defined, and the defensive players, especially the front seven, who seem pretty small as a group.

finally, the lack of wit of some of you fools is breathtaking. comparing the signing of nnamdi asomugha to the redskins annual harvest of the adam archuletas, fred smoots (twice), jeff georges, bruce smiths, haynesworth and mcnabbs, is beyond stupid.

Also different than the skins and boys is the fact that beyond nnamdi, none of the so called dream team additions is guaranteed any money in 2012.

so we’ll see how it works out, but what banner and reid are trying to do shouldn’t be compared to vinny cerrato and dan’s coach flavor of the month.

Jury is still out and will continue to be that way… but it does make you wonder. Just ask Daniel Snyder of the Redskins. You can aquire a bunch of individual talent in free agency but that doesn’t translate into automatic wins. Sometimes having too much talent works against having a great team. I do have a feeling they will work it out, but it could end up in implosion. Now that would be fun to watch… Philly fans making prozac smoothies!

  74. caseysarasota says: Aug 19, 2011 10:38 AM

All I can say about the first team D & O is…”bleh” threw up a little watching, but then realized, it’s only preaseason…lets hope we don’t read this same kind of article during the regular season, then it will be time to REALLY worry.

    Personnel

It is evident the Eagles are in dire need of a handful of LB’s, atleast one safety and a stout tackle. Still not convinced either center is worth his title.

    Strategy

Practice your blitz protection as everyone will be
coming after Vick all season long.

  76. caseysarasota says: Aug 19, 2011 10:40 AM

and can anyone tell me this…why is Joselio Suckson still on this flippin team?!!!!!!! OMG! He is the WORST.

Dog murderer earns a QB rating of 13. Hilarious!

Unqualified novice rookie DQ looks like a deer in the headlights. Even funnier!

Fat boy better get this group together quickly or the wheels are coming off.

“My only real concern coming out of this game is Vicks confusion reading defenses. That is something he should’ve had down long ago and has nothing to do with the new acquisitions to the team. Not to mention it’s public knowledge that he’s been working at getting better at it this offseason.”

    @eagleswin

Maybe if Vick had spent some time watching film instead of smoking weed and playing Madden on PlayStation his whole time in Atlanta, he would be at that point in his career. Welcome to every Falcon fan’s frustration.

    1. Andy Reid still doesn’t realize you can run in football
    2. don’t sign 100 free agents if you can’t pay your star wide reciever for work he has already done
    3. you need linebackers in the NFL to succeed… and a real def coord to coach them
    4. Asante Samuel still doesn’t understand the double move concept… OVERRATED!
    5. you need an offensive line to succeed as an offense
…. what a filthy waste of money and talent

  82. pixelito says: Aug 19, 2011 11:28 AM

Nothing better than watching an over-hyped team get dismembered on national television.

Trust me Eagle fans, it gets much worse than this.

    I love it!

Can’t wait for the season to start so all theses $%!& talkers can hate us even more. “Hey dream team…Blah, blah. blah!” and Vick did GO TO JAIL for what he did, all you self righteous never did a thing wrong in your life, perfect from your sofa, fat mouth, middle aged, it’s okay to hurt people but not my dog, without sin, stone him, perfect people.

Needed to say that…love the Football smack talk, but hate all the perfect people in the world. (who know there were so many of you)

  84. originalsteelcurtain says: Aug 19, 2011 11:36 AM

Yeah it’s only preseason..but it’s still Football and it’s a Prime -Time game on FOX, so you know the players were trying hard.

Vick was awful…3 picks in less that 2 quarters. Troy had another pick lined-up but Harrison tipped it. Scrub CB Warren dropped another one.

Sometimes a team needs a kick in the teeth. We’ll find out what he Eagles and Bucs (who were similarly dismanted by NE) are made of in a few weeks.

There’s absolutely no way that everyone in the media isn’t going to run with “the Dream Team” at every opportunity this year is there? The Eagles are not calling themselves the dream team.

    —————————————————————-

Vince Young called them the dream team. On top of that, team president didn’t back off VY”s characterization when he had the chance, and said said “Somebody wrote the words ‘The Eagles are all in,’ and that’s how we look at it. We’re doing anything and everything we can. We’re being aggressive about it, and the expectations are high.”

The team is officially embracing the pressure. Andy should have side mirrors installed on his glasses because if the Eagles don’t at least go deep into the playoffs I think he may be history. He’s ascending to rarified air, there aren’t many coaches that have lasted this long without bringing home the bacon. Cowher. Fisher. Bud Grant.

    And well-stated “Eagleswin.”

Good luck Washington. Rex Grossman should give you all the confidence you need.

Good luck Dallas. You still suck.

Good luck New York. Bottom of the NFC East this year.
    —–
Figures, Eagles don’t look good so you go out of your way to rip on every other NFC East team to cover your insecurities. And no way the Giants finish last in the division, that’s about as likely to happen as the ‘Skins finishing first.
    ————————————————-
Oh, you mean like your reason for commenting on an Eagles thread such as this one? Insecure are you? Why don’t you stick to your team’s threads and quit trolling other teams’ and spreading your hate. You suck.

I’m not an Eagles fan, but I think using something that was said by a back up QB with a history of saying dumb things to bash them over the head every time something bad happens to them is a little unfair.

    ——————————————————————-

Maybe if they don’t want their players to say dumb things they should stop signing players that have a history of saying dumb things. Besides, Banner said “all in” and it really doesn’t matter how you label it, Dream Team, All Stars, All-In Team, it’s just a label for what the Eagles are trying to do… grab most of the top free agents in an attempt to win a Super Bowl. It’s not unfair to turn it back on them, and you should dry your little tears because they made this bed for themselves.

    Somebody get “realitypolice” a tissue.

  98. melonnhead says: Aug 19, 2011 1:03 PM

The concern is very real that Vick, without a contract to play for, will revert back to his old self.

  103. Mr. Wright 212 says: Aug 19, 2011 3:01 PM

And before anyone tries to act like it’s an aberration, it’s not. I’ve said since midseason LAST year that they have a bad offensive line, only Trent Cole on the defensive line (still my story, now that they got rid of Bunkley for reasons unknown, and Babin is nothing special — contract year guy), weak at LB and weak up the middle altogether from DT to S.

Even when Jackson and Maclin are healthy, they are gonna live and die with the big play.

But everyone’s so ready to hand them a title and shovel dirt on us because we lost Boss (the only real “loss” we had to begin with — we’re stacked everywhere else where guys defected.)

Much as it galls me to have to agree with somebody named “Cowboys Fan” , you’re right. The only thing in pre-season that means anything is the #1’s vs. each other. And ours stunk. But it’s football, and it is only the second game, and we’re used to suffering, thank you very much, so let’s not put our heads in the oven just yet!

Ya ownership sucks..just a rich boy with $ no football knowledge what so ever..Ya coach aint won nothin since the late 80s via Terrell Davis..skins fans have noooo room to talk at all

I can understand people saying “hey it’s pre-season, better now than later, we’re not playing 100% full scheme” etc etc.

But then think about that just a little bit. Vick threw 3 picks against a vanilla, not running 100% scheme D that was vanilla designed to go against him. He couldn’t read or understand it. LAst year he started hot because teams didn’t have recent film or hadn’t prepared for him. Once teams did – his production dropped. Don’t deny it – it dropped. He didn’t play as well and NOW – in pre-season where he’s not seeing the best a D-cord has to offer – he was confused and throwing picks.

Doesn’t really matter whom he was passing to either because none of those picks were where the receiver tipped the ball to the DB.
