Belichick addresses Woodhead’s involvement in fourth-quarter punt play

D. Woodhead Getty Images

Almost as troubling to Pats fans than the sight of running back Danny Woodhead stumbling after taking a big hit was the fact that he suffered the blow while covering a fourth-quarter punt in a preseason game.

So why was he out there?  Good question.  Good luck getting a straight answer.

“When we go into any game, all players are told to be ready to play the entire 60 minutes,” coach Bill Belichick told reporters, via comments distributed by the team.  “That’s what a game is.  We don’t stop playing.  We don’t stop coaching.  Everybody’s ready to play the whole time from beginning to end.  That’s every player and every coach.  That’s part of the game.  That’s how we approach them all.”

That’s fine, but with 90 guys on the roster and with the biggest priority during the preseason to emerge from it as healthy as possible, it’s surprising that a key piece of the offense like Woodhead was on the field on a punt play in garbage time of an exhibition game.

Thats why he is the greatest coach of all-time and you are a stink ass-turd for a blog writer. He keeps his players on their toes and ready for anything.

What would be called dumb anywhere else is the league is just “the Patriot way” in New England. No further explanation required.

  3. persianelvis says: Aug 19, 2011 5:48 PM

Woodhead obviously needed to work on his punt covering skills.

He should of been in the game.

  4. hobartbaker says: Aug 19, 2011 5:49 PM

“K, guys, this one is almost in the books, we don’t want any last minute concussions. So send out Woodhead.”.

  5. austskate says: Aug 19, 2011 5:51 PM

Typical Belichick just doing things to show people he’s different and does things his own way

    Stupid move.

BTW…all NFL teams are racist. Woodhead was cut by the Jets more than once & all teams passed on him. No way that would have happened if he wasn’t white.

  7. cnelson13 says: Aug 19, 2011 5:56 PM

Uh, Danny Woodhead isn’t a key part of any offense. He sucks. He thrived last year due to the system and talent around him. He’s certainly not above covering punts. He won’t even be in the league in a few years.

  8. hobartbaker says: Aug 19, 2011 5:56 PM

Bellyache could send out Tom Brady to field the punt and it would be considered a smart coaching move by a lot of the people.
“Daring!” “Innovative!” “Stretching the envelope!” “Fighting complacency!” .

He’s keeping his players ready for anything, alright. Especially unnecessary concussions and IR. Maybe someone with some common sense can keep Belichick on his toes and ready for a slap upside the head. ****ing moron.

So why is Belichick’s decision to keep Woodhead in the game being questioned more than Holland’s cheap-shot coulda-killed him illegal hit …… one which wasn’t even FLAGGED!!!!!

Tell me again, Roger Goodell, how serious you are about “player safety” when Holland doesn’t even draw a penalty from an official for what was a direct-in-your-view headshot – I mean, everyone’s eyes are focused on the return man, who Woodhead was about to tackle; It’s not like it happened away from the play.

Question Goodell, question the officials, question Holland and HIS Head Coach, but Bill Belichick should be the LAST guy anyone questions here.

  14. rushmatic says: Aug 19, 2011 6:31 PM

    @hobartbaker:
Did Belichick bang your mom? You can’t devote this much time to hate without a good reason.

  15. theytukrjobs says: Aug 19, 2011 6:34 PM

Well the obvious answer is that Woodhead may be used in certain punt formations to either take a fake punt carry, or to at least give the other team the illusion that he will do so. So this was an opportunity to give him a shot to cover a punt.

Either that or Belichic was pissed at Danny and wanted to put him out where he’d surely get punished.

But this is PFT damnit so forget logic and obvious answers.

With all that said, Woodhead is too small to cover punts and this was an idiotic play really. High speed impacts on smaller players often result in concussions as their bodies bounce back faster than a larger man. Which is exactly what happened.

Er I mean Belichic is a genius.

The funny thing is this is mostly true yet people are so ignorant they don’t understand this and it gets 44 thumbs down. But not really because of racism but rather just the double standard in sports when it comes to race. Darren Sproles…..signs big deal with Saints after 5 somewhat productive seasons with SD. But they won 8 or more games in 5 of the previous 6 seasons before he got there. Also, need I remind you that the team that Belichick coached moved to Baltimore right after he was fired? He was actually fired 15 seasons ago. You didn’t count the 3 seasons that Cleveland didn’t have a team, then you counted a team that Belichick never coached. As a jets fan I knew the day they cut woodhead it was a bad choice, they thought they were deep enough at running back after drafting the kid out of usc who looks to be a bust so far, but Tanny wouldnt cut a draft pick for a undrafted free agent left over from mangini.. Danny has heart, and although I fear eventually like Cherbet his size will get the best of him until then it will be a hell of a fun ride with this kid!! The hoody was smart to grab him up, but reguardless it wasn’t a good move to have him in that late in the game covering a punt..That is not getting him ready for anything but a strecher, that late in a preseason game the only way for some of these kids to show up on tape is to decleat someone, and Danny being a starter would have a target that he wouldn’t have in a regular season game.. As much as I hate the pats I respect Danny tons..

  45. descendency says: Aug 19, 2011 10:05 PM

The Browns made the playoffs in 2002.

The last time the Browns won a playoff game was 1994, when Bill Belichick was head coach. He beat Bill Parcells’ Patriots team.

I don’t get why everyone thinks they know better. If the injury doesn’t happen, do you even realize he was in the game? If this had been Richard Medlin, would you even care? Woodhead is wildly loved for lots of reasons (he was a jet, but is now a Patriot; he’s a white runningback; he came from nowhere; etc), but he’s a very pedestrian running back who runs behind an elite OL (both run and pass blocking).

He’s replaceable. The Patriots just invested heavily into that position because of it.

Plus, the Patriots are thin in terms of ST players because they have so many DL. It was dumb, but Belichick (and his staff more importantly) thought the other STs were gassed and he put Woodhead in, who’s roster spot isn’t guaranteed because of the competition at RB.

Let’s not act like Woodhead is CJ2k or something.

@ Richm2256: No worries, Danny’s fine, and Holland will get a nice and pleasant fine in the tens of thousands of dollars range, hope it was worth it to the Bucs, though, I wonder why you’d hit him late in the game…rather than earlier when he was running through your line like beans through your intestinal tract. The refs probably didn’t call it because the Bucs were simply getting manhandled and wanted the game to end sooner.

    Where to start?

First, Vince Lombardi says you’re a moron if you can’t see how solid a coach Bill Belichick has been the past 10 years. And for all you idiots who point to Belichick’s record in Cleveland, I would ask you how Lombardi – the acknowledged GENIUS of coaches – fared in DC after he left Green Bay? Did he suddenly get stupid?

    Cat got your tongues?

Second, Belichick’s record since “Spygate” is just too stupid to even post here. He may not have won another Super Bowl, but his won-loss record and the offensive and defensive stats since that day are flat-out ridiculous. Check it out for yourself, and get back to us, would you?

Last; Belichick has never STOPPED filming, moron. Neither has YOUR team….. because it’s LEGAL!!!! Why you idiots have such a hard time grasping that is beyond belief. New England does it, EVERY team does it; it’s ALLOWED, provided you film from sanctioned positions.

You’re placing the blame for a helmet-to-helmet hit on Belichick – for having Woodhead in the game – instead of on Holland for a dirty hit or the officials for not calling a highly visible penalty …. and you’re calling ME the idiot?????

Roger Goodell makes an example of the dumbest hits, in the name of “player safety”, but this cheap shot goes un-flagged and he says nothing …. but I’m the idiot???

all these posts here about how great b.b. is and i would agree except for how tainted his tenure is.i won’t go into all the details of spygate because they can be argued back & forth all day the one thing that should stand out to EVERYBODY(yes that includes you pats fans) is the fact that the head video person for the pats at the time demanded immunity before he would say a word to the nfl or anyone else says very loud & clear that he knew good & well he was doing wrong and wasn’t gonna take the fall for what he was asked/paid to do for the team.and like it or not it happened on b.b.’s watch and i would not be the least bit surprised to find out it was his idea and even if it weren’t he still went along with it and in many peoples eyes his teams & superbowls will be questioned.so imo b.b. was great -a great cheater at one time & maybe now for all we know
