Clinton Portis tries out for Patriots

Kansas City Chiefs v Washington Redskins Getty Images

Clinton Portis has finally emerged from hiding.

It should be no surprise that the Patriots, of all teams, uncovered him.  They are the patron saints of player workouts.

Ian Rapoport of the Boston Herald reports that Portis worked out for the Patriots Friday.  New England has hosted a long list of player workouts over the last month.

They signed a few of the players.  Most of the veterans, like T.J. Houshmandzadeh and Darren Sharper, remain free agents.  Portis seems to be in the category of “due diligence.”

Running back is perhaps New England’s deepest position and we can’t imagine they would consider signing Portis unless injuries hit.

Will the Patriots stop trying out guys they won’t sign anyways???

What are they trying to do fool other teams to think that they’ll sign one guy at an overcrowded position so that they can auction off their more current guys at the same position for higher compensation???

The player known more for stupid costumes than his play can’t play anymore!!!

Bears can’t bring up young talent, why do you think they paid so much for Pepper’s 8 sacks last season? Why do ya think they traded all those picks for Cutler? The last player that was drafted and brought up big by them was urlacher and unless my memory is failing me I DO believe he was a Dicvk Jauron guy no?

Can’t argue with Pats past success. But it has been a while. They may become “consummate professionals” (and I assume you mean model citizens by that statement) but that does not mean they are not all washed up.
This FA feeding frenzy seems to be a far cry from how they won from 2000 to 2005.

MMMMK smart guy…..Geniuses, team Professionals. Really…. is that how Moss ended his career with them. Is this how we are grading a successful season on now. Who can acquire and motivate Egotistical players to resurect there career while playing for the patriots. Last I checked that hasnt proven very successful for the Patriots in the last couple of years. But hey nice try at insulting my team.

  27. bearsandjazz says: Aug 19, 2011 6:53 PM

14-2 sure doesnt compar to the Packers Superbowl win. No team is doing anything right unless they win the Super Bowl. Im sure the Steelers arent boasting about being 2nd place last year.

I’m a Ravens fan, but I’ve seen Portis over the years down I95. He’s the best blocking RB. If the Patriots are working him out, it’s to help out the O-line.

If anything, they want him to eat minutes in the upcoming preseason games to keep injuries from their starters.

  36. wethog66 says: Aug 19, 2011 7:43 PM

Southeast Jerome in New England? Might not be a bad move. The guy is devistating as a blocker in the back field. Would make a good 3rd down back. Be ready for him to trip over his own feet a lot though.

Much love and respect for CP26! I hope he signs with them and gets his ring! As a Redskins fan I respect everything he did in the burgundy and gold! He was a beast under Joe Gibbs but unfortunately Gibsy just wore him down too much. For those on here that say he sucked just check his stats from his rookie season until JG left.

    ————-

Actually…not true. The active 2001 offseason was an absolute home run for Pioli and Belichick. They brought in Vrabel, Phifer, Pleasant, Patten, Izzo, and Antoine Smith at RB.

2000 brought in Andruzzi, Bobby Hamilton, and OTIS Smith…

Between those veteran guys, they really helped lay the foundation for the Pats success between 2000 (which was a rebuilding year for BB and the Pats) and 2005.

The problem for the Pats was their non-first-round draft picks AND FA signings between 2004-2007. Duane Starks? Reche Caldwell? Chad Brown? Monty Beisel? Doug Gabriel? Are you sh!tting me!?!?!? It amazes me Pioli generated as much interest as he did after those dud years which really set the Pats back…and BB is to share blame in that too.

The coaching drain from Foxborough didn’t help either…year after year after year.

  46. 1historian says: Aug 19, 2011 11:45 PM

Since Belichik came to town the Patriots have been in 4 Super Bowls, 3 of which they won.

Since Belichik came to town the Patriots have won somewhere in the neighborhood of 75% of their games.

Since Belichik came to town The Patriots have had 11 straight winning seasons.

Since Belichik came to town the Patriots have won the AFC East title I think 8 out of 11 seasons.

Since Kraft bought the franchise the Patriots have – over the last 17 seasons – compiled the best winning percentage EVER in pro sports over a similar stretch.

Are we Patriot fans arrogant and snobby?
    Abso-damn-lutely.

Haters – get used to it because it ain’t gonna end anytime soon. When (if?) it DOES end we’ll take our seats and stfu.

  47. thetechnocrat says: Aug 20, 2011 7:47 AM

Really? They have two rookies and 3 vets on the team. I think all are better than that clown Portis. Go ahead and sign him, waste a roster spot.

On the bright side, maybe he’ll put on another “look at me” getup and do a little soft shoe for the local news. He’s a washed up, ignorant douche and if he wasn’t so local media friendly maybe more people would know it.

    ———————————————————
WTF does THAT mean? Danny Woodhead is a balls-out, 110% player, who gets the job DONE.

@1historian, thank you for epitimizing what Pat’s fans everywhere understand; we know what Kraft and Belichick have brought us, we remember what life as a Pat’s fan was like Pre-Kraft, Pre-Parcells, Pre-Bledsoe, and we appreciate the hell out of the past 18 seasons, especially the past 10.

We have every right to be proud of this franchise, this coach, and these players – what fan of any other team wouldn’t? – and we know what life is going to be like after BB is gone.

So we’re going to cheer the hell out of this team while we still have something to cheer ABOUT, and when the run is over, you’re right; we’ll collectively STFU and suffer like the rest of the fans who quietly support their sucky teams do today.

Pat’s fans earned the right to cheer these guys, because of so many horrible seasons (2 and 14, anyone?), and the Pat’s have built an organization that most fans of other teams only WISH they had; what Browns fan or Bengals fan or Bills fan wouldn’t wish THEIR team was run like this?

The run will be over some day, and we know that, and we know that we’ll cherish these days and these teams for decades to come….. and we’ll have little to cheer about then.

Any one of you Patriots bashers knows in your hearts that you wish YOUR teams were this good, for this long, and the day may come when it is. Then, you will understand why New England fans were so passionate about this team TODAY.
