Derrick Mason, Mark Brunell shaken up at Jets practice

D. Masonjetspractice

We’ll give Jets fans the bad news first.

Wideout Derrick Mason left practice on Friday while being attended to by a doctor.  After disappearing for a little while, he did return to watch practice from the sideline.  That indicates it may not be a major issue.

Quarterback Mark Brunell might be worse off. He slowly limped off to the locker room after pulling up lame during a play.

Now, the good news: Plaxico Burress caught a long touchdown pass at practice.  He’s practiced without incident since finally practicing fully on Wednesday.   Burress and the rest of the Jets starters are expected to play into the second quarter Sunday night against the Bengals.

The Jets’ aging receivers will be a big sub-plot to their team this year.  We have our doubts that the team upgraded when they traded in Braylon Edwards and Jerricho Cotchery for Burress and Mason.

Small matter. Training camp bumps and bruises. We’ll be fine.

Next NFL safety rule. Don’t let 40 year-olds play

  4. packerrube13 says: Aug 19, 2011 4:19 PM

Yeah and they actually paid more for Plax than Braylon got, that doesn’t make any sense whatsoever.

They have downgraded from last year. Another Wild card year, followed by a loss in the AFCCG is the best case scenario it looks like.

Did anyone check to see if Plax shot Mason or Brunell in the leg?

  12. bradybbgoat says: Aug 19, 2011 4:25 PM

Besides getting older on offense, the Jets are also very thin.

They had better hope Sanchez stays healthy. They might have to sign Plax’s prison Qb as a backup.

If yesterdays game was any indication Jerricho Cotchery looks like he may fit in well with Steelers. Thanks J-E-T-S.

It would be too easy to poke fun at the Jets for signing guys that should be retired and it’s too easy to point out the obvious that old people get injured easier and take longer to recover. So instead of mocking the obvious.., I will say nothing at all.

They didnt want Braylon hes too much trouble and has too many issues. Can we at least wait till Plax actually plays in a real game or at least a preseason game before you compare him to Braylon. Nobody has seen Plax play yet once hes played a few games then make the comparasins. jeez!

I’m not at all comparing the two as individuals, I’m comparing their contracts.

$3.017 Million for a 34 year old WR just out of prison, and out of the league the last two season
    OR
$1 million for a younger guy with more upside, and familiarity with the offense and personnel.

This isn’t rocket science. It just makes more sense in that regard to keep Braylon. I even like Plax!

Also, swapping Cotchery, 29, for Mason, 74, is a bad move as well. Do they actually want to win?

They swapped Braylon, Smith, and Cotchery for Plax and Mason. That’s terrible, and in no way justifiable.

  31. nyheel says: Aug 19, 2011 5:05 PM

If anyone here actually watched Jet games last year, you would know that Braylon never got open. He just isn’t a very good wide receiver. Plax is a significant upgrade over Braylon. Before the offseason I was hoping they would dump Braylon and get Plax.

Now Cotchery I’ve always liked, but Braylon just isn’t good.

Right, because the Packer spent their offseason getting considerably older in free agency and isn’t already one of the youngest teams in football. I fear they may have already peaked, good call.

In other news, the Vikings look primed to take control of the NFC North this year.

    /end sarcasm

dlk47823 says: “Its so good to see all the Jet Haters are back…. We can smell your fear….” It’s pathetic to have to keep running into J-E-T-S fans’ fantasy posts. Successful pro football teams are built on more than hot air and a willingness to be deluded.

    @akulabug

Yes i know Burress is right out of prison. But he would be the biggest dumbass in the world if he didnt stay out of trouble this season and play hard and try to earn a better contract next year. The Jets should get a good year out of him bs free. There was something about Edwards the Jets didnt like. I never usually question what tannenbaum does and i wont this time. It was the same thing last year when the Jets lost some big players like Thomas Jones and Alen Faneca and Kerry Rhodes. Everyone freaked out and guess what the Jets were fine and had a better team than the previous season. Just like they will be this year they will be fine. Mason is a suitable veteran replacement for JCo and if Burress is %80 of what he was hes better than Edwards too. I love how the last two years everyone has crapped all over Edwards on this site saying he sucks and now the Jets made the biggest mistake letting him go. What a joke, let the season play out people before you pass judgement. Its not like Cotchery and Edwards are sooo much better. There are negatives that come with them too.

Do you relize that Cotchery hasnt played a full season since 08. Mason hasnt missed a game since 03 and hes older. Last year JCo caught 41 balls for 433 yds and only had 2 tds. Mason on the other hand had 61 balls for 802 yds and 7 tds and in 09 it was even worse the difference between the two. Even in 08 when JCo had FAVRE throwing to him and Mason had the ROOKIE Flacco throwing to him Mason put up better numbers. Mason has produced more consistantly over the years and his whole career despite his age, check the stats and compare. Plax has a game winning catch in the super bowl and was a huge part of the Giants winning that year. The Jets have lost the AFC Champ game two years in a row. They are trying to get over the hump. The experience they have on the team as far as the receivers is way better than last year. Lets just let it play out and see.
