Jockeying starts over Osi Umeyiora’s expected return

Osi Umenyiora AP

The sudden surgery of Giants defensive end Osi Umenyiora was bound to raise a few eyebrows in New York after his recent contract standoff.

Don’t be surprised if Umenyiora’s recovery and return to the team becomes a contentious issue.  Giants.com says Umenyiora will miss 3-4 weeks with arthroscopic surgery.  That timeline was in the headline of the Giants’ email to media on the topic.

It’s interesting the Giants felt the need to immediately put that information out to the public. It’s even more interesting after ESPN’s Adam Schefter wrote the following:

“A person close to Umenyiora says ‘it could be 4-6 weeks or longer.”‘

Settle in, Giants fans.  (And beat writers.) This could take a while.

Well, now it makes sense why he ended his stand-off so quickly.

Giants will gel without him and Osi will hopefully be humbled as a result

Dream-on team – collectively praying its 6 weeks

  3. gcsuk says: Aug 19, 2011 1:39 PM

Good luck with that next contract, Osi. Plenty of teams will be clamoring for a Diva DE who bitches about his contract on a continuous basis and who is about to have his 4th surgery in the last 4 years.

  4. dgrowe213 says: Aug 19, 2011 1:40 PM

With or without Osi the Giants will have a subpar season with Eli as their QB and being in the same division as the Eagles.

  5. east96st says: Aug 19, 2011 1:43 PM

The Wally Pipp of football. You ain’t ever seeing the starting line up again unless someone gets hurt real bad. JPP will buy you a shirt when he goes to the Pro Bowl. Hope you enjoy making the vets minimum when you hit free agency. Fire whoever is advising you. You’re making one wrong move after another, dumbass.

    So I don’t get a raise, boss?

Fine. I’ll just take my 2 weeks paid vacation followed by all of my sick and personal days.

Yes, I know that this is the most hectic and crucial month of the year. Good luck with that.

Yeah… knee surgery really ups your market value for your next contract. DUMMY.

  10. phillyisinvading says: Aug 19, 2011 1:52 PM

His knees probably got shook that Shady McCoy was gunna juke him on 9/25.

  11. paulsdamnblog says: Aug 19, 2011 1:54 PM

What was it that Lesean McCoy said about Osi… Oh yeah, “overrated n soft 3rd best d-line on his team honestly.” Hmm…

After watching JPP tear through the Panthers All Pro last week I wouldn’t even be worried about what Osi is or isn’t doing. Give his spot to JPP and get rid of Osi’s headache causing arse.

  13. ebeg420 says: Aug 19, 2011 1:57 PM

I think Shady McCoy was 100% right about this guy!!

  14. nbaraie says: Aug 19, 2011 1:57 PM

I dont blame Osi. This is his only leverage.

He should be paid like the talent he is.

It is not different than a team putting a player on season ending IR, for a minor injury because of lack of production. The Bills do that all the time.

  15. jakek2 says: Aug 19, 2011 1:58 PM

Ok – I might have bitten into a bad breakfast apple which might explain what I am about to do.

As a Giants’ fan, it’s blaspheme to give props to anything Eagles but. . . this was a ballsy, hard-nosed play by Vick.

I want a job where I can miss a boatload of my important meetings, have a decent year, complain the contract I made suddenly isn’t good enough, then conveniently schedule surgery right before a bunch of important meetings are scheduled INSTEAD of when business was slow! Stop complaining about your critics Osi becase you deserve it, you sissy mary!! GRRR!

We honestly don’t need him as badly as people think. DE is our deepest, most talent-filled position by far.

I’m more amused by how quickly Osi has ruined his career than anything at this point. But congrats to JPP on becoming our new RDE for the next 10 years.

“this was a ballsy, hard-nosed play by Vick. ”

Ah, no. Its not “ballsy” to take a players legs out.

After 6 weeks Osi wont have a spot to return to because of JPP and the Giants will gladly trade him then.

Basically Osi is saying well if they wont pay me a lot to play they can pay me a little to sit on my a**at home, trade me, or cut me!

How did Eli stack up against Peyton who had half his team hurt, or Rodgers who had half his team hurt, or Joe Flacco who had no WR’s or maybe Rivers who came in the league the same year and had half his team hurt, or maybe Matt Ryan?

    =======================

Yes, Peyton had half his team hurt, so did Rodgers, so did Rivers, but you know what? So did Eli. Steve Smith was out most of the year. Nicks missed a few games. Boss missed time. Hixon was out the entire season. Victor Cruz was put on IR halfway through the season. The Giants signed Devin Thomas, Michael Clayton and Derek Hagan DURING the season because of all the injured WRs. Duke Calhoun, their #5 WR had to start one game. Derek Hagan had to start one game. Did any of those guys have to deal with that?

There was also the O-line. O’Hara only played in 6 games. David Diehl missed 4 games. Rich Seubert moved from guard to center. Don’t go around saying all these other QBs had players hurt and make it sound like Eli had a full and completely healthy group because he didn’t.

  40. eaglesfan290 says: Aug 19, 2011 5:11 PM

Victor Cruz was undrafted …………………is that how you plan on making Eli “Elite”? I mean come on Bro you don’t have one leg to stand on at all you have no idea what you are talking about!

Peyton has virtually nothing on his team and he still rocks it even after going under the knife twice!

Eli has one of the best RB groups in all of football, and a decent WR group ……………but never gets it done. Look face it if it wasn’t for Tynes making that one catch and gift wrapping the Superbowl for you there is a good chance Tom Coughlin would have been fired and the Giants would have moved on from Eli.

Eli is not a bad QB, but he is middle of the road QB nothing more!

PS: Eli has been playing for more than one year so why hasn’t he lived up to the hype? Giants could have had Phillip Rivers ………….god life is so good!

No Cofield and no Osi , and no LB’s translates to a vulnerable front seven.

people who arent familiar with teams and their rosters should refrain from commenting.
easily the most idiotic post on this entire thread.with a healthy osi the giants may have the best front line in all of football. without him they are still top 5-7. the giants linebackers arent great, but are still much better as a group then ignorant people are giving them credit for. herzlich and greg jones will be stars for this team by 2013. for now, boley, goff, and kiwi are an adaquate starting group.

  42. noprudejustpicky says: Aug 19, 2011 5:22 PM

My Eli statement was based on facts that I knew, not an opinion that was half researched, genius. Thank you, thehouseofho and nyfootballgiants… SMH.

As for Steve Smith and Kevin Boss… It’s called a SALARY CAP.. again, if you have to ask this question… you’re a real genius.

  43. Mr. Wright 212 says: Aug 19, 2011 5:23 PM

    Smith and Boss are replaceable.

We’re not going to miss anyone. Cruz is going to be better than Steve Smith ever was. Besides, Steve left for the money and not because of a potentially reduced role. He’ll regret it when he’s cut next March.

Boss left for money, before we cleared the cap to make any higher offers. He’s not worth what he got paid. Best of luck to him. He did what he had to do. Ballard, Beckum and occasionally Pascoe (when he’s not in the backfield) will more than make up for his loss.

  44. Mr. Wright 212 says: Aug 19, 2011 5:24 PM

O’Hara had become a turnstile the past two years, we don’t need him. Baas is a huge upgrade. Richie Seubert’s injury vs. WSH hurt my heart because I knew he wouldn’t play this year most likely; forcing Dave Diehl back inside. I do not trust Beatty yet, and that’s the only concern I have for this entire team.

I love how these slags like to harp on ONE season’s INT numbers as a reason to negate Eli. He’s Top 6-7 in NFL QBs, which is precisely where the drop off from elite to above-average begins in today’s crop of QBs.

  45. Mr. Wright 212 says: Aug 19, 2011 5:25 PM

As far as Cofield goes, we’re just as deep as the doo doo the Eagles’ offensive line WILL BE IN this season — with regards to the talent there. We knew he was leaving and are well-stocked there, as was the preparation.

  46. jdandcoke says: Aug 19, 2011 5:29 PM

to add to my previous post:

barry cofield was a good guy and a good player, but he also greatly benefited from playing on a team that had multiple stud DE’s. much like cornelius griffin years ago, the skins overpaid a former giants DT when they signed barry.

the giants have two young monster DT’s on their team, linval joseph and marvin austin, who will soon be producing just as much as barry ever did.

  47. jdandcoke says: Aug 19, 2011 5:31 PM

    Mr. Wright 212

exactly….you beat me to the punch. anyone who thinks losing barry is some sort of huge hit to the giants just has no clue as to who is on our team.

  48. thehouseofho says: Aug 19, 2011 6:14 PM

Is anyone else having problems posting?

  49. thehouseofho says: Aug 19, 2011 6:15 PM

    @eagles290

OK, I guess I have a tendency to talk too much because my post isn’t coming up because I’m guessing it’s too long, so I’m going to break it up into parts.

1 – I never called Eli “Elite” and that certainly wasn’t the point I was trying to make. You brought up the fact that Peyton, Rodgers, Rivers were playing with half their team hurt and made it seem as if you thought Eli had it made easy. I brought up an argument to show you he didn’t have it as easy as you think. Also, everyone Peyton, Rodgers and Rivers threw to last year had training camp and preseason to work with them. Eli didn’t have that luxury with the 3 WRs they signed during the season. Now, I may be wrong, but I’m pretty sure that none of those teams had to start a #5 WR on game day either.

2 – The Giants made Steve Smith an offer during the season last year before he got hurt that was extremely lucrative. Smith decided he wanted to test free agency. The Giants made Smith an offer during the off-season, but they wanted to place him on the PUP list to start the season. The Eagles offered 3 times more guaranteed money and said they would give him the chance to not start the season on the PUP list. He took the money and ran down the turnpike. I don’t fault him for that.

  50. thehouseofho says: Aug 19, 2011 6:16 PM

    @eagles290

3 – The Giants gave Kevin Boss what they felt was fair market value. Boss was actually on a plane back to NY to take his physical for the Giants when his agent called and said the Raiders are going to pay him over 4 times as much. Boss gave the Giants a chance to match and the Giants declined. This isn’t team PR at work either, Boss’ agent has confirmed this.

4 – Like it or not, Eli has a ring. Hype or not, that makes him worth it. Before you start saying one lucky catch, the defense won, etc., remember that Eli avoided a sack like no other QB has done and he’s the only QB in SB history to give his team the lead twice in the 4th quarter and the only QB in SB history to throw a TD with less than 2 minutes left.

  51. eaglesfan290 says: Aug 19, 2011 7:10 PM

Well I guess we will see in 3 weeks!

Just for the record Eli had a completion percentage of 54% and a QB rating of 73.4 in that game ……………….thats just horrible!

Rodgers last year was over 61%
Brees the year before was over 80%
    Roethlisberger 70%
Peyton the year they won 66% even Grossman who lost that year to Peyton had a completion percentage of 71%

The fact is you can’t find a winning QB in the Superbowl who had a lower QB rating or passing completion percentage even on the side that lost in most cases!

  52. thehouseofho says: Aug 19, 2011 10:35 PM

See what? I’m not sure exactly what you’re talking about since all I did was provide facts that you asked for, then change the subject after I’ve given you those facts.

You went from implying that Eli had an easier season that Peyton, Rodgers and Rivers when they had “half a team,” but ignored the fact Eli was in the same predicament. Then you jumped to asking why Steve Smith and Kevin Boss weren’t re-signed if they’re so important in Eli becoming “Elite.” Now you’re talking about QB ratings in Super Bowls? Well, if that’s what you want, here’s the 10 worst Super Bowl QB ratings of all time and yes, there is a winning QB in there.

    1. Craig Morton, Denver Super Bowl XII
    4 of 15, 39 yds, 4 INTs, 0.0 rating

    2. Kerry Collins, Giants Super Bowl XXXV
    15 of 39, 112 yds, 4 INTs, 7.1 rating

    3. Earl Morrall, Colts Super Bowl III
    6 of 17, 71 yds, 3 INTs, 9.3 rating

    4. Fran Tarkenton, Vikings Super Bowl IX
    11 of 26, 102 yds, 3 INTs, 14.1 rating

    5. John Elway, Denver Super Bowl XXIV
    10 of 26, 108 yds, 2 INTs, 19.4

    6. Billy Kilmer, Redskins Super Bowl VII
    14 of 28, 104, 3 INTs, 19.7 raing

    7. Ben Rothlberg., Pitt. Super Bowl XL
    9 of 21, 123 yds, 2 INTs, 22.6 rating

    8. Craig Morton, Dallas Super Bowl V
    12 of 26, 127 yds, 1 TD, 3 INTs, 34.1

    9. John Elway, Denver Super Bowl XXII
    14 of 38, 257 yds, 1 TD, 3 INTs, 36.8

    10. Ron Jaworski, Phil. Super Bowl XV
    18 of 38, 291 Yds, 1 TD, 3 INTs, 42.6

  53. wreckingcrewwarrior says: Aug 20, 2011 12:15 PM

I love how every article about the Giants turns into argument about how bad Eli is or good the Eagles are. The fact is the Eagles have ZERO SB rings and the Giants have 3.

I would rather have SB rings than the most talented QB the world has ever seen. I’ve never seen Dan Marino wearing his Afc east chapionship ring on the halftime show.

The only thing that matters is winning the big game. Even the Dallas Cowgirls know that.

Can’t erase the past only when it suits you. For all that, this “six games in a row” meaninglessness can be written off as the “past” on the same token.

  56. noprudejustpicky says: Aug 22, 2011 1:23 PM

I love how Eagles’ fans talk. Being jaded is one thing, but I do believe we heard all of the same ‘this is the year’ crap for the last several DECADES, but yet a 3 year old championship is the ‘past’. Proof is in the puddin’ my lil’ green punkins… and this year ain’t lookin too hot for the ‘keep dreamin’ team. Vick was so outplayed, need I remind you the PREseason chance he took with Polamalu? The ‘dream’ has already been weighed, measured and found wanting.

Oh, but the blue and red still have three… I am just sayin.
