Report: Bears may have made an offer for Taylor Mays

The San Francisco 49ers recently sent an e-mail to all other teams offering second-year safety Taylor Mays in trade.

Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com writes that there’s talk within the locker room that the Bears made an offer for Mays — and that the 49ers rejected it.

Per Maiocco, Mays declined comment, and the 49ers denied that the Bears made an offer.

If an offer was made by the Bears, the 49ers naturally would have been leery.  In 2008, the Bears charged the 49ers with tampering in connection with failed trade talks for linebacker Lance Briggs.  The 49ers eventually lost a fifth-round pick, and they were required to flip-flop third-round picks with the Bears because the league concluded that the 49ers approached Briggs’ agent regarding a contract extension at the time the trade talks were occurring.

Then there’s the fact that the brother of 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh is the head coach of the Ravens, and that John Harbaugh and other members of the Ravens organization believe that the Bears should have sent a fourth-round pick to the Ravens after a failed effort to swap first-round picks during the 2011 draft.

“They agreed to [trade] a pick,” John Harbaugh said last month during an appearance on ESPN Chicago’s Waddle & Silvy Show.  “They got their guy [Gabe Carimi] on the phone.  They recognized he wasn’t getting calls from the team behind them.  And then they basically stalled for over a minute, telling us that they had called the trade in.  So that was just not honest.

“That’s not OK.  It’s not ethical, it’s not right.  I personally agree with our owner [Steve Bisciotti] that they should have been held accountable for it.   We basically took them at their word, and obviously that was a mistake.”

And so the Ravens likely wouldn’t be inclined to do business with the Bears in the immediate future — and John Harbaugh’s brother, Jim, likely wouldn’t be inclined to do business with the Bears, either.  Along with the rest of the 49ers organization.

I doubt the 49ers organisation would care that the Ravens had a failed trade with the Bears, no matter how many links you try to make

If the offers good enough, he’ll go

    Good, this makes me happy.

I could be wrong, but in this case I do not believe anyone is on the clock. If the offer was good enough and the 49er’s turned it down for what is suspected the 49er’s are idiots.

    Get over it Harbaugh!

Bears suck. Why so much hoopla for a team that has 1 Lombardi trophy? They look much better when you have, oh IDK, FIVE

    GO NINERS

    Can he play O-Line?

  10. baned0n says: Aug 19, 2011 7:36 AM

I’m confused. Why would the Bears be leery of the 49ers because of the tampering thing? If anything, the Bears should be leery…the 49ers were the ones that were trying to subvert rules.

2 used k-balls weren’t enough to get Mays?

  12. vahawker says: Aug 19, 2011 9:00 AM

Tim Ruskell trying to accumulate more under talented players so he can drive the Bears into the ground like he did the Hawks. Gonna suck to be a Bears fan

  13. raiderlyfe510 says: Aug 19, 2011 9:00 AM

What they offer…. A 6 pack of beer and negotiations broke down because the Bears wouldn’t throw in some tic tacs?

Can’t imagine a deal for Taylor Mays being hard to broker. He has no value.

  14. pencepost says: Aug 19, 2011 9:07 AM

I have a hard time believing the Bears would offer something another team is able to refuse. Perhaps the Niners are hoping the Bears will up their offer three first-round picks instead of just two.

This article is funny. The 9ers want to stick it to the Bears because the league caught the 9ers tampering? The 49ers won’t attempt to make their franchise better because Jim’s brother coaches the Ravens and their was “draft day snafu” with the Bears? One of the dumbest things I’ve read in a while. ” You know what, lets not get better because Jerry Angelo screwed our head coaches brothers team.” Enjoy last place again if that is their logic.

How many years are 9ers fans going to have to suffer through the Alex Smith Project, get it through your heads upper management, you messed up!

  18. breeshasasprole says: Aug 19, 2011 9:25 AM

    To the Bears,
If you’re not going to use Craig Steltz, we’ll gladly take him.

Doesnt Taylor Mays have an upside?

  20. andyreidisfat says: Aug 19, 2011 9:32 AM

If a guy is 23 and your already trying to trade him so much so that you are sending mass league wide e-mails, why would anyone offer you anything. Clearly the niners do not want this player.

He must be really bad. If they can get any pick at this point they should take it. Or they could wait through the season and see if maybe the young man gets it and turns the corner. ?If not, cut him.

  21. spartaninnh says: Aug 19, 2011 9:52 AM

I’m sorry, the conclusion drawn makes no sense. Because the 49’ers tampered with a Bears player, they now won’t accept a Bears offer for one of their own? Why not? If it isn’t good enough, it’s not good enough, having nothing to do with the tampering history.

If you’re saying that the loss of draft picks in the past makes the 49’ers want to recoup them in *this* deal, that’s one thing, otherwise, it’s just an exercise in really, really, rotten logic.

And I won’t even address the contention that the 49’ers’ view of the Bears’ offer for Mays is being colored by what the Bears did (or didn’t do) in last April’s draft — to a different team.

The offer made is either good enough, or it isn’t. Leave out the poorly-thought-out Freudian analysis.

Seriously Bear fans why aren;t the using Steltz… im not trying to be stupid I just dont pay attention to Chicago media. Why aren’t they using him, seriously give me some feedback. The times ive seen him play in Chicago he’s been solid.

  23. jutts says: Aug 19, 2011 10:46 AM

The 49’ers suck. Jim Harbaugh and his brother are tools. I personally could care less what they say. Either one of them.

Steltz is pretty good against the run and a hard hitter, but he can get lost in pass coverage. Maybe the Cover-2 transition???

I don’t think the Bears are looking for a starter, they are looking for depth. We have a history of injured safeties. You can never have too many.

  26. dmackdaddy says: Aug 19, 2011 11:25 AM

If there was an offer they would have taken it. Word is that they might just waive his ass, so why not take what they can vs free?

  27. ronniemexico says: Aug 19, 2011 11:49 AM

If Jim Harbaugh was going to stick it to the Bears it wouldn’t be to avenge the honor of his brother. It would be for the years of therapy he endured because of how Ditka treated him.

  28. JSpicoli says: Aug 19, 2011 11:54 AM

That, and the Bears only offered a game worn Singletary jersey and a hoagie for him.

REALLY???? Coulda sworn Walsh won a super bowl more recently than 1985 and living in Chitcago myself, I hear about that damn near every day to the point it’s like traveling through time listening to Bears fans talk football.

    @louisvillebear

Thanks. Steltz is a lot more atheletic than people give him credit for. The game in 09 when yall beat the Vikings he played really good, even in coverage. I graduated in 04 in H.S. with him so im definitely impartial but dude can play ball. What he did against Jesuit (our High School rival) was one of the most amazing things ive ever seen one person ever do on the football field in my life. I hope he gets a shot somewhere if not with the bears.
