Cam Newton appears headed for starting gig

Carolina Panthers quarterback Newton stretches during warmups before his team's pre-season NFL football game against the Miami Dolphins in Miami Reuters

Panthers rookie quarterback Cam Newton may have left the door open for Jimmy Clausen in Carolina’s second preseason game, but Clausen didn’t take advantage.

Now it looks like Newton will continue starting at quarterback for the Panthers for the foreseeable future.

Coach Ron Rivera announced Sunday that Newton will start Thursday night against the Bengals and play about three quarters.  Translation: We’re getting him ready for the season, barring a major faceplant.

Even if they won’t admit it.

“We are still in the evaluation process after having gone through a game where we did some good things, but not enough good things,” Rivera said via the Gaston Gazette.

It makes sense for Rivera to keep things close to the vest for now, but actions speak louder. Jimmy Clausen has improved some since he was a rookie, but not enough to compel the Panthers to sit the No. 1 overall pick in the draft.

I think Cam will be decent. Probably not have a Matt Ryan-like impact but anything better than Clausen.

  5. jacunn2000 says: Aug 21, 2011 5:10 PM

So what is going to happen to Newton when Auburn is caught?

  6. FinFan68 says: Aug 21, 2011 5:12 PM

Lots of hype for Cam. He has not been impressive either. He also doesn’t have the Sam Bradford $ that would force a stupid team to play him earlier than they should. He may eventually turn out to be a decent QB but right now he is playing backyard football in the NFL. He has not even made any third-down conversions in the preseason–throwing, running, or handing the ball to someone else. How exactly is he playing better than Claussen? Truth is, he isn’t.

  7. alabamacowboy says: Aug 21, 2011 5:17 PM

Cam Newton is better than Jimmy Clausen??? In other news, water is wet.

  8. batyuki says: Aug 21, 2011 5:17 PM

In time, Newton can develop into a quality NFL quaterback, but that’s just not gonna happen if he doesn’t play the real thing so starting him is the best thing to do right now even if that doesn’t mean immediate success for the team. Clausen doesn’t look like a better option right now anyway

  9. nav711 says: Aug 21, 2011 5:26 PM

Newton looked lost against THE DOLPHINS, imagine how he will look against a good team?

  10. lionpride10 says: Aug 21, 2011 5:30 PM

Answer:Jamarcus Russell, Vince Young, Cam Newton.

Question: Name the last three mobile QB busts.

  11. stonedwhitetrash says: Aug 21, 2011 5:39 PM

Newton’s head tells him to stand tall in the pocket, but when he sees a couple of huge men coming at him with blood in their eyes his feet tells him to run, RUN

  12. stuckinalabama says: Aug 21, 2011 5:48 PM

Well, at least Cam doesn’t look like they took a toddler’s head and graphed it onto a man’s body…

Cam is playing a whole lot better than Blaine and just as well as Sam Bradford did last year with his OTAs and TCs. But keep letting the media spoonfeed u your information so u can sound like u know WTF ur talking about.

BTW, Blaine Gabbert, the media’s preferred All American QB, is still playing shot-gun and running from invible defenders, just like he was in college.I guess he too must be play “backyard football.”

Wow…are u claiming that only black QBs are mobile and are busts?

One good thing about the internet, it let’s us see how far we really have come as a society as far as bigotry is concerned. Even worse, those in the media seems to have realized it and is more than happy to use it to help keep their jobs.

JaCarcass wasn’t mobile at all. Both he and VY are borderline idiots. The mental shortcomings are more to blame for their failures than anything else. Like it or not, an NFL quarterback needs to be fairly bright to be anything more than mediocre.

No way to tell with Newton yet. Maybe he’ll be good, maybe he’ll be an over-hyped bust. Time will tell.

None of the above have anything to do with race.

  17. FinFan68 says: Aug 21, 2011 6:16 PM

    @whatswiththehate:
You are one of the biggest biggots posting on these boards. For you to complain about bigotry is laughable. Your screenname tells us all we need to know.

I simply stated the facts. You interpreted them as some kind of attack. The media is hyping Cam and it is not about his play so far. I admit the kid has potential but as far as outplaying Claussen so far, he simply hasn’t regardless of what you think you see through those racial glasses of yours.

  18. medtxpack says: Aug 21, 2011 6:18 PM

    @whatswiththehate

youre obviously the one looking for it, quit it.

while youre hear though, name a mobile white qb?

its not that they are black, its just that not the majority of the over mobile run style QB has had much success. vick set the bar high…

  19. macker1283 says: Aug 21, 2011 6:20 PM

I’ve never bought the “rookie QBs should sit the first year or two in the league” stuff. Yea, you can point to people like Aaron Rodgers. But who is saying Rodgers wouldn’t have still went on to a great career if he hadn’t? The fastest way to get the rookie up to speed with the NFL is for him to play from the start, let him make his mistakes. If a guy is good enough, he will be good enough. Peyton Manning threw 28 interceptions his rookie year.

Where coaches screw up is when a QB stinks his first year and they give up on them. As long as they show something their first year that makes you think they could be good, ala Colt McCoy, they should get another shot their second season.

  20. heyguru1969 says: Aug 21, 2011 6:22 PM

Living in Charlotte, I’m a lot more excited about Cam than I thought I’d be. He hasn’t had the benefit of playing with a full starting roster (especially Steve Smith), but has shown glimmers of hope with the new TE’s in particular. The game will eventually slow down for him and his arm strength and overall poise has been a pleasant surprise. Now that John Fox & the Vanillas have taken their road-show to Denver, we can get back to watching FUN football. Way past due!

  21. chiktikka says: Aug 21, 2011 6:28 PM

Wanna hear something sad? The Dolphins were playing to win; going for it on 4th downs, trying to run down the clock in a preseason game, and still only scored twice against the Panthers who were running vanilla schemes with no adjustments to evaluate their players.

  22. chiktikka says: Aug 21, 2011 6:30 PM

Remember when Sparano celebrated like he won a Super Bowl when it took his goal line offense 5 plays in a row to score from the 1 yard line?

  23. sdskelly says: Aug 21, 2011 6:33 PM

Hey, if worse comes to worse, Carolina always has Derek Anderson… haha! Mark my words, if the situation arises that D.A. gets any playing time, he will wow everyone for one or two games, be named the savior, and then throw about four picks in the next game. As a Browns fan, I cannot believe anyone would sign him… even for the league minimum!

  24. goldenstatus says: Aug 21, 2011 6:35 PM

@medtxpack Aaron Rodgers ring a bell? Ben Roethlisberger, Tim Tebow? Lets go back to older qb’s. Jim Zorn, Fran Tarkenton, Doug Flutie, Roger Staubach, Steve Young? Not all mobile qb’s are african american kid. Also “hear” in your instance is spelled “here”.

  25. satanphoenix says: Aug 21, 2011 6:43 PM

    Hint for Cam:

Your first play in the regular season while be a Blitz. Cards DC Ray Horton promises it. And Adrian Wilson will deliver it, bad arm and all. Unless Darnell Dockett beats him to you. Expect most of your day to be like that on Sunday September 11th

  26. scudbot says: Aug 21, 2011 6:45 PM

lionpride10 says: “Answer:Jamarcus Russell, Vince Young, Cam Newton.” If you’re counting the All You Can Eat line, leave JR in there. If not, he’s out. But you forgot to add Tebow and Pryor. Until the NFL has to play college style ball because there are no pro set QB offenses in college left, none will work out.

  27. httv14 says: Aug 21, 2011 6:45 PM

Vince Young was 31-17 as the starter of the Titans; not a bust in my opinion, just needed a change of scenery and an attitude adjustment.

  28. mwcarolina says: Aug 21, 2011 6:56 PM

Answer:Jamarcus Russell, Vince Young, Cam Newton.

Question: Name the last three mobile QB busts
JaMarcus Russell wasnt that mobile. now in college he moved around a little bit, but mobile no. he had size (he’s 6-6 and was 250 pounds or something) and when he moved in college he could get away, but in the pros he didnt have much speed. Young had speed, just not Vick speed and same with Cam, however, Cam has better arm mechanics.

  29. caneincanada says: Aug 21, 2011 6:58 PM

    Jake Locker……

    Colin Kaepernick…

  30. scudbot says: Aug 21, 2011 6:59 PM

httv14 says: “Vince Young was 31-17 as the starter of the Titans” And? VY laid down 13 yards a game rushing last year. That’s not mobile. Add the passing yardage and you’re up to 152 yards a game. That’s not adequate.

  31. httv14 says: Aug 21, 2011 7:29 PM

Last year Young’s passer rating was 98.6

  32. hobartbaker says: Aug 21, 2011 7:29 PM

Should never have opened up the league to them mobile and athletics. Let them barnstorm like back in the days. In 60 years they’ll be resurrected, and become legends as “Lil Ears” Newton, and the “Jeannette Jet”, Terrelle Pryor.

  33. screamingsheep69 says: Aug 21, 2011 7:32 PM

He has got to quit throwing off his back foot.

  34. scudbot says: Aug 21, 2011 7:45 PM

“Last year Young’s passer rating was 98.6″ And? QBs who produce 150 yds/game of total offense are busts.

  35. httv14 says: Aug 21, 2011 7:49 PM

It is worth noting that Young made 2 Pro Bowls

  36. scudbot says: Aug 21, 2011 8:03 PM

httv14 says: “It is worth noting that Young made 2 Pro Bowls” but is now a backup. In his 6th year, when he should be entering his prime. Career averages: Passing, 150 yds/game. Rushing, 25.6 yds/game.

  41. gfan8611 says: Aug 21, 2011 8:46 PM

Does anyone really have to keep track of this situation? He’s “battling” Derek Anderson and Jimmy Clausen for the starting spot, not Dan Marino and Joe Montana. If he can’t beat out those two stiffs he’s already a bust.

  42. jerranamo says: Aug 21, 2011 9:15 PM

cuz C. Newton is more then a football player.. he is an “icon” and an “entertainer”
