Giants cornerback Terrell Thomas tears ACL

Washington Redskins v New York Giants Getty Images

One of the most underrated and indispensable players on the Giants appears lost for the season.

Giants cornerback Terrell Thomas went to the locker room late in the second quarter after getting leg whipped by teammate Jason Pierre-Paul. Thomas was able to walk off the field, but ESPN’s Suzy Kolber got word from Giants coach Tom Coughlin that Thomas tore his ACL.

Thomas had steadily become New York’s most consistent and complete cornerback and was heading into a contract year. He seemed primed for a big season after a strong training camp.  With first round pick Prince Amukamara out until October, the Giants are suddenly thin at cornerback.

It’s a very tough blow for the Giants defense, seemingly made worse because it happened just a few plays before halftime when the Giants starters would come out of the game.

That sucks. I’m an Eagles fan too, but that’s a bummer….what a waste to lose good players in a preseason game.

  2. doe22us says: Aug 22, 2011 10:01 PM

That sucks last thing you want to ever happen injuries of the season ending variety.

  3. jbl429 says: Aug 22, 2011 10:02 PM

brutal. Best CB on the team. Ross has to step it up now and Prince needs to get healthy soon. This team will really need the D line to make up for lack of depth in the secondary.

  4. Bearfan54 says: Aug 22, 2011 10:03 PM

I saw the hit and it looked pretty bad. I thought at first his leg was broken and the way he walked off the field he threw his gloves you could tell he was done.

  5. jints3bowls says: Aug 22, 2011 10:03 PM

Awful news, he had over 100 tackles for us last year…worst person we could have lost in the secondary, and yes worse then if we had lost Phillips. Devastating to the defense and rest of the team. I’m not sure who can step up and fill that void.

  6. drunkenagitator says: Aug 22, 2011 10:04 PM

Expect a pair of 48-45 games vs. Dallas this year.

  7. gallaghedj311 says: Aug 22, 2011 10:05 PM

That sux. Even as an eagles fan, I hate seeing guys lose a season to injury

  8. DonRSD says: Aug 22, 2011 10:09 PM

This is the 3rd injured cb. 2nd out for the season.
The pass rush better step up to save the cb’s who will be playing after Webster.
    GO BIG BLUE!!!

this is why the preseason is B F’N S!!! Lost 4 the season n a meaningless game!

  11. dohpey28 says: Aug 22, 2011 10:12 PM

Why would you have the 1st team defense on the field with 30 seconds left in the 1st half of an exhibition game when the Bears where on their own 18? I mean c’mon, that’s terrible coaching.

  12. tommyribs says: Aug 22, 2011 10:13 PM

Damn, this really Sucks T2 is really a good player and he was only getting better.

Stupid freak play with 30 seconds left in the half. Don’t really know why we still had starters in there, but this really is the downside to football. These things can happen at any time.

Get well Terrell, I hope you can come back 100% from this!

    Preseason sucks.

  15. mad5555 says: Aug 22, 2011 10:38 PM

The Eagles could always trade Eli’s 2nd favorite receiver to the NJ giants and then you could have another WR that is great at catching eli’s dead duck balls and a top 5 cb. The only problem is that the NJ team doesn’t have anything of value that the the eagles can’t get of the scrap heap after the first round of TC cuts.

  16. mad5555 says: Aug 22, 2011 10:41 PM

If you were wondering who eli’s second favorite receiver is that is on the eagles…
    It’s Asante.
    HAHAHAHA

  17. jbl429 says: Aug 22, 2011 10:42 PM

@jints3bowls, Phillips? Sorry, Rolle is way more important to the secondary.

  18. greymatterstats says: Aug 22, 2011 10:47 PM

Giants secondary certainly looks very liable to the pass now with Bruce Johnson and Prince Amukamara also gone for the year.

  19. hus10188 says: Aug 22, 2011 10:50 PM

This one really really hurts T2 was destined for a heck of a year BUT looking at it optimistically our first 7 games on paper are as relatively as an easy start you can get barring Philly.

1 Sep 11 NYG @ WAS – WE OWN DA SKINS.
2 Sep 19STL@NYG – rams at our place, young QB against our D-Line – nuff said.
3 Sep 25 NYG @ PHI- dream team, steve smith’s inside info, we should lose this one right? See SB42!!!
4 Oct 02 NYG @ ARI – Tough game but we match up well with them.
5 Oct 09 SEA @ NYG – see 2010 score of this game, game was over in the first quarter, up by 20+ points.
    6 Oct 16 BUF @ NYG-Hahaa…..cakewalk.
    7 Bye
8 Oct 30 MIA @ NYG – Chad Henne would’ve been dropped by this game and if he’s a starting QB then they’re backup must be atrocious.

The Prince and Osi will be back by early October at the latest and lets face it outside of Philly, we’re not really facing any explosive passing games. We could go 6-1 by the bye or maybe 7-0 by finally beating those eagles, whilst the Prince gets acclimated until the second half when we see the real top dogs, brees, brady and rodgers.

All is not lost. GO GIANTS.

tough loss. aaron ross is smiling on his way home tonite knowing hes not getting cut.

hope one of our last 2 first round pick cb’s come through down the stretch whether its ross or amukamara

  21. jacksaysfu says: Aug 22, 2011 11:16 PM

I never wanna see anyone hurt so I hope he has a speedy recovery . Its not all bad though giants fans , atleast when Philly spanks ny for the 7th and 8th time in a row , you g-string fans can say ” they only beat us cause we lost our best CB” . We dont want problems with NY we love ny , they give us 2 wins every year . (que the philly has no sb’s comments , and we won it all in 07) . But truth is , ever since the Eagles have owned ny !! ps thx again for Steve Smith .

  22. jebdamone says: Aug 22, 2011 11:18 PM

that is tough for a guy that was looking ready to become a pro bowler in this league.
picked him up early on waivers last year for fantasy and really enjoyed watching him work. was looking forward to drafting him this year.

  23. zeussuperman says: Aug 22, 2011 11:31 PM

As an Eagles fan, I’m sorry for the injury. Losing a player in practice always seems to feel the worst, because it’s kind of pointless.

  24. jacksaysfu says: Aug 22, 2011 11:36 PM

@hus10188″ we should lose this right …see super bowl 42″

Really , thats why ny will win vs. Philly ? You won a SB in 07 so thats why you’ll win ? Haha thats the weakest argument i ever heard . Have you even beat the Eagles since then? (Eagles 6-0)
And Ny usually starts strong , but they alwaysfade late . Hang on to 07′ cause the East goes through Philly , and one last time , YOU CANT BEAT US ! enjoy 2nd or 3rd , AGAIN!

  25. cured76 says: Aug 22, 2011 11:53 PM

I’m an Eagles fan, too, and losing key players in the pre-season is horrible, awful, sh*tty, you name it. You don’t put your best players on the field and suffer as a consequence. The Giants lost their top 2 guys at the CB position and that is going to take a lot to overcome. Hope those guys recover properly so they can get back on the field.

This is why I detest the pre-season and training camp. You hear stories like this all the time. And an ACL at that? Ugh. You’d rather a dude break his leg than tear the ACL.

  26. freedomispopular says: Aug 22, 2011 11:59 PM

Is it just me or does it seem like there’s a lot more injuries than usual? Could a lack of offseason preparation have anything to do with that? And if that’s the case, will limiting offseason and in-season contact help the issue? Can I really ask 4 questions in a row?

  27. norcaleagles says: Aug 23, 2011 12:03 AM

Thats sucks to lose your top CB in a preseason game. Good luck to Thomas on his rehab and hopefully he’ll be good to go by the beginning of next season. That being said, I read a post that said he had 100 tackles last season. Is that correct? There is no way that a CB should be making that many tackles! That means either his man is making too many catches or the LBs arent making tackles and the opposing RB is breaking through the defense. And to HUS101, Your teams win over the pats in SB 42 has NOTHING to do with this season.

Why would anybody wonder that? Eli plays for the Giants. Stop trying to tell jokes. It’s too complicated for you. You should have just said “Asante Samuel is Eli’s second favorite receiver”.

Guess what scumbag? Your classless joke of a franchise still remains ringless. Have fun celebrating those regular season wins, because we all know when it comes to the post-season you pathetic Iggles fans have nothing to root for.

Apologies to all the classy Eagles fans who chimed in their sympathy – all it takes is one scumbag to solicit the sort of response that overlooks the majority of you who understand the pain of losing an important player in a meaningless game.

    @drunkenagitator,

“Expect a pair of 48-45 games vs. Dallas this year”.

Uhhhh, no, your Giants won’t score 45 OR 48 against the Cowboys. We have our starting CB’s getting healthy and both are expected to suit up for the regular season opener. The Giants split with us last year, and had the one game where they scored 41, and that was with a horrendous Dallas tandem at S and no Rob Ryan. Elam and Sensabaugh will play much better than Ball and Sensabaugh, and with a good pass rush (which Dallas will have) and an good executed scheme by Ryan, your Giants won’t be putting 40+ points on Dallas, nor very likely anybody else (no more Boss or Steve Smith equated to 8 Td’s and 1000 yards last season – I highly doubt Beckum and Hixon/Cruz will come close to matching that).

Losing Thomas for the season was huge and unfortunate in the secondary. If Ross doesn’t step up, and Prince and Umenyiora don’t heal up quickly enough, the Giants are looking at very potential issues defensively. Pierre-Paul is looking good, but he isn’t a healthy Umenyiora.

  33. gcryall says: Aug 23, 2011 8:42 AM

The real problem with this is that after all the improvement that this guy has made since coming into the league, he will not be rewarded for it. He is in a contract year, and Jerry Reese will lie to him, low ball him and/or screw him just like he did to Osi, Cofield, Boss, and Smith.

No justice any more. The Giants always used to be a class origanization. No longer so with Tim Mara and Tisch at the reins. Wellington already rolled over in his grave about the PSL’s. He will contine to spin with the way the front office treats their players. Shameful.

Lol, you obviously are a guy with a real low level of intelligence, so let me break down what I was stating.

I was actually stating that the eagles game is one in which on paper you should beat us. Going into that week 3 game, I’m sure everyone will pick against us so I was merely referencing to the biggest upset in SB history as a way of stating the last time the Giants were heavy underdogs in a big game.

Lets face it, Perry and our Defense, exposed your puny, fragile QB the first time we faced him and everybody with a decent D has followed suit, vikes and recently steelers.

Hmm, I wonder why your ‘storied’ franchise has yet to lock up your ‘franchise’ QB long term. Perhaps because they, like every Defensive Coordinator around the league, have come to realize he’s a one trick pony, that is now so simple to gameplan against plus you throw in the fact he’s a lock to miss 3 to 4 games a year via injury as his history has shown and that O-line is atrocious.

Come to think of it in terms of being solid, our team is a lot more solid than yours, you have an O-line coach who is now your D-coordinator, Samuels on the trading block (how must he feel knowing this), O-line is atrocious, LBs are the worst core in the league (by faaaar) plus your team’s chemistry is non-existent.

One last thing, please explain where those 6 wins have gotten you? That’s right nowhere. Thats 6 wins, 0 SUPERBOWLS. ONE LAST TIME , 6 wins, 0 SUPERBOWLS. NADA!

You like the jets can grab the headlines but we’ll always be the big brother in the tri-state area, always.
3 and counting bud! GO BIG BLUE.
