This team needs to rebuild through the draft…and that requires extra draft picks. I’ll be sad to see him go, but trading Gore right now seems to be the best move long-term.

I absolutely agree it would be a mistake to sign Gore at 29, with his injury prone history. And I am a long time faithful. See how Hunter and Dixon do this year and make the decision at that time. If Hunter is for real, sign him to the long term contract. I predict Frank misses more than a couple games, due to injury this year. With a more effective OL, Frank needs to be a team player and play for less money like the class players in the NFL do. That’s my take.

Mike Iupati is mediocre? do you watch football? the jury is still out on Anthony Davis, and thats a legitimate complaint, but Iupati? really?

all that tells me is you have an issue with taking 2 linemen in the first round and you dont watch the 49ers play. Iupati is a beast.

What would Bill Walsh have done? Cut him loose. Bill would let a player go early, rather than hold on past their shelf life. He made a few mistakes – Ronnie Lott still had gas left in the tank when he let him walk – but overall, he was brilliant at knowing when to let an aging player go, no matter how popular or how much he had contributed (see: Montana, Joe). The Dork family? They’ll probably give him Larry Fitz money, and he’ll hit the wall next October and be done.

Baalke is another stooge from the dysfunctional York Niner front office. A career SCOUT who’s one draft saw the team throw away two high first round draft picks on one mediocre G and a horrible OT, and who’s second round pick Taylor Mays just got shipped off for a 6th round pick after only 1 year with the team. Great job Trent! In Knucklehead Jed’s world, that kind of failure gets you a promotion!

Actually Gore is 28 years 3 months and 9 days to be specific, but that is still approaching old age for a NFL RB. IF (and it’s a big IF), Gore can stay healthy, this is about the last season he has to be a top tier RB. According to the averages, his production will fall of roughly 30-40% over the next two years.

His value will never be as high as it is right now, and it does not make sense of r the 49ers to sign him long term, but it does make sense to trade him WHILE HE STILL HAS HIGH VALUE.

I love what Gore has meant to the 49ers, but the NFL is a business. Gore deserves to play with a winner and the 49ers need the draft picks.

I seen some one earlier named chairman I think al…I understand when u say they signed the contract so they should have to play the yrs out even if the team got a fair deal…but what happens when the player signs the big contract and get cuts when he doesn’t preform 3 or 4 yrs into the contract…it works both ways…let’s see if terell thomas gets the money he has earned in his contract yr now with a torn acl…if u earned it say something about it because u never know

They offered a lucrative “lifetime” contract, but closer examination reveals that virtually all of the money doesn’t come due until after the age of 65. Meaning the team could cut him prior to that time if his performance starts to tail off.

FYI NFL players if you sign a contract you made a deal don’t cry about it later you should have included some superseded expectations bonuses when you signed it

Gores agent is a d bag and is trying to get his pocket fatter. Its just not smart to invest in a older running back with a history of injuries. I love gore but with this gm he should already know he aint going to hand over that type of dough. Trent did a good job at locking up the best players on our team like patrick willis and vernon davis. I dont see gore here after this year. Some dumb team will over pay for him next year in Free agency. You gotta remember gore blew out both his knees in college.

Pay the man, he deserves it. There are very few backs in the NFL that posses the skill set that Gore has. Strong in pass blocking, good pass catcher out the backfield, excellent vision. Very underrated back. If he was on a team that wasn’t so inept offensively for his career (except the year Norv Turner was OC), he would have been putting up monster numbers every year (see 06-07) and it wouldn’t even be a question if he was a top 5 back.

Frisco has been getting a bargain for 5 million dollars. Alex Smith is making 5 million dollars. PLEASE.

The 49ers have a ton of cap room. Sign Gore to a 4-5 year incentive laden contract that significantly reduced in value if he fails to play a significant amount of each season.

Gore has carried the entire offense on his back since mid-2005, he’s likely to surpass Roger Craig this year as the all-time 49ers leading rusher. He’s been nothing other than an exemplary teammate throughout his career, and has done everything asked of him to help the team. He deserves to retire as a 49er and he deserves to be paid…so DO IT TRENT.

I’m sorry, am I the only one who sees an issue with this whole contract holdout trend? You agree to play for a certain amount of money for a certain amount of years. And then, because you’re doing well and maybe the team got a good deal out of you, you want to threaten not to play?

It was a VOLUNTARY contract. Shouldn’t the point be to play well so your next contract is worth more money? Its not just Gore; Chris Johnson, all of them. You signed the contract; you get paid for that contract, then get more cash out of your next one. Quit whining.

The Panthers really screwed it up for the 9ers (& every other team) with that ridiculous Williams signing. It’s such a huge outlier but of course now every RB wants to match or beat it. No wonder the Panthers are so terrible.
