Some Broncos see Tebow as fourth best QB in camp

AP

A rough month in the development of Broncos quarterback Tim Tebow is about to get a little rougher.

Michael Silver of Yahoo! Sports got some some eye-opening quotes from various members of the Broncos organization that will make waves in Denver.

“If everything was totally equal, and this were a competition based only on performance at this camp, Tebow would probably be the fourth-string guy,” one source told Silver. “Kyle [Orton] is far and away the best, and Tebow’s way behind [Brady] Quinn, too. And I’m telling you, Adam Weber is flat-out better right now.”

Weber, an undrafted rookie, has no chance to actually pass Tebow on the depth chart.  But Weber has looked impressive when given the chance, and Tebow is struggling to work under center or grasp a pro offense.

One Broncos executive says to, “Forget about how [Tebow] delivers the ball, or how accurate it is. First he has to know where to go with it.”

We’re getting to the point that this feels like piling on. It seems clear Tebow has a long way to go, and this Broncos staff may never fully embrace him as the answer.  They see him as a project.

Silver confirms the Broncos were willing to trade Kyle Orton to the Dolphins for a third-round pick in late July.  Receiver Brandon Lloyd called it a “relief” when Orton stayed put.

“Sometimes the best things that happen to you in life are the things that don’t happen,” one high-ranking official told Silver.

The usual caveats apply. Tebow was always supposed to take time.  Through hard work, the Broncos think perhaps he could improve enough to start.

Maybe Tebow will be a succesful starter someday, in Denver or elsewhere.  If that happens, we’ll hear a lot about how Tebow proved the “haters” wrong and overcame some low moments in his career.

It’s hard to imagine it will get much lower than being called the fourth-best quarterback on the Broncos, by the Broncos.

  1. it seems apparent they don’t want him there.

trade him, get something back for him/blame mcdaniels for setting the franchise back a little by trading up for him, and let him go some where that wants him.

  2. So have they confirmed that it was an earthquake on the east coast or did JaMarcus Russell just finally land on a team somewhere over there?

  3. Where to go with the football. It’s what seperates good QB’s from bad QB’s. If you don’t understand where the offense dictates the ball go, which in turn requires understnading what the defense is doing, then you’ll never be any good. cough Vince young Mike Vick cough.

  4. Adam Weber is a diamond in the rough. He played for four different offensive coordinators at Minnesota so he had to learn a new offense every year and he performed really well. Give him some solid and consistent coaching and he can be a very good backup quarterback.

  5. This guys goes in the first round of the draft and the Raiders take a project in the 3rd round of the supplemental draft and get crucified for it, sounds right.

  6. Whoa. Just think how bad the Gophers would have been if they had Tebow then instead of Weber… Are all MN sports cursed? No, wait, aren’t the Lynx in first place!

  7. I’ll never understand why so many people root for him to fail. Everyone wants to kick him while he’s down. It’s just a game. You should be rooting against TEAMS, not individual players.

  8. Where’s all this coming from? Tebow had a better record and put up better numbers in the final 3 games (his only starts) than Orton did in his final 3 games last season. Suddenly people make it look like he’s not ready to play. I think they forgot he already played last season and was pretty good. Actually he was considered the #1 QB going into camp.

John Fox and John Elway don’t know what they’re doing, that’s the problem.

  9. We’re getting to the point that this feels like piling on.
    =============

    I agree.

I have said from the start that Tebow had no shot, so it’s not like I am defending him, but this is getting ridiculous.

It is obvious that the new regime is doing everything it can to distance itself from the Tebow pick and laying the ground work for getting rid of him.

None of it is necessary. Keep your feelings in house and then release him at the appropriate time.

Releasing him will send the message just as strongly without embarrassing the kid with an endless stream of negative press.

This kid didn’t draft himself. The responsibility for taking this kid too high and placing unrealistic expectations on him still falls squarely on the organization, I don’t care how many new faces are now in charge.

Lay off. If you want to cut him, cut him. But knock it off with the public disparagement.

  10. Man what an unprofessional organization the Bronco’s are running. If you don’t want the guy as your QB or on your team cut or trade him, but these constant “whispers” or “leaks” to embarass the guy is just pathetic. Love or hate Tebow all you want, obviously he’s not a NFL starter right out of the box (nor was he suppossed to be). The fact can’t be disputed that he did go 2-1 as a starter last year, and has thrown for over 300 yards in a real game that actually counts. I’m willing to wager a great deal of money that “Adam Weber” will never throw for 300 yards as an NFL Starter, so this “Broncos official” sounds more like he’s got an agenda or ax to grind in leaking this info.

  11. Wow all this opinion coming from PRACTICE?

“mean listen, we’re sitting here talking about practice, not a game, … We’re talking about practice man.” AI

  12. It’s hard to imagine it will get much lower than being called the fourth-best quarterback on the Broncos, by the Broncos.

    Very true

  13. The Broncos need to go to the Eagles school of unloading unwanted QBs. keeping Tebow now will be a distraction after what they said during the lockout.

  14. I know the broncos have no chance at being good this year so every is all over Tebow, but come on the guy is not going to be a starting QB in this league for some time, if ever.

  15. Before people call me out saying I’m a Tebow slap, no way. I’m a lions fan.

I realize that spread QBs don’t do that well out the gate, but if they are that down on them, these types of comments don’t help your quarterback’s confidence or development. No matter the player.

Alright, he’s developing quick enough, but if they don’t want to keep him, trade him. The Bronco organization isn’t doing anything to help his trade stock rise.

  16. Too bad. I love the kids attitude and work ethic. However, the Bronco’s personell department should be canned because everyone knew that a year ago..

  17. It’s the new “hip” thing to bash Tebow. He is not a first round caliber QB but the bottom line is this guy finds a way to win games. Rather than bash him for not being the next Elway, maybe they ought to embrace what he is actually capable of doing for the franchise. He sells tickets, he scores TDs, he has boosted the fanbase; etc. He is not the best QB in Denver, but he doesn’t need to be in order to help the Broncos.

  18. Why are Bronco fans so adamant to see this guy be their QB? They act like the front office is sabotaging this guy. Don’t you think they’d WANT him to succeed since he’s a 1st rounder.
Face facts.. he might be a great guy.. and he might even be an NFL football player (maybe TE), but he’s just not an NFL quarterback.

  19. Well it could be worse… He could have to pay the Broncos back. Must be nice to be paid 8.7 mil guaranteed and fail utterly to earn it.

  20. I’m willing to wager a great deal of money that “Adam Weber” will never throw for 300 yards as an NFL Starter going forward from today, so this “Broncos official” sounds more like he’s got an agenda or ax to grind in leaking this info.

  21. kind of makes it hard to sell unerwear when you are on the practice squad-Jesus may have to rethink his support too!

  22. Adam Weber is a good guy with a decent arm and plenty of grey matter between the ears — hope he gets a shot somewhere.

  23. It’s over in Denver for Tebow. The organization apparently hates him as a player, so send him off to someone who will give the kid a chance.

I hope Tebow goes on to crush this league, and especially John Fox and Denver.

  24. I actually feel kinda bad for Tebow. Imagine the high he came off of after playing at UF, getting a Heisman, critics saying your a 3rd round pick at best and you get drafted in the first round. Winning a couple of games late in the season and hearing speculation that you could be the starter when Orton gets traded (overlooking Quinn by the way). To this….

  25. Nice. Sources. Now I’m on the trolley.

It still doesn’t make much sense to cut this guy. But I’m getting the impression that the Broncos brass is basically saying “Yeah, he may be on the team, but we didn’t draft him.”

  26. Trade him? His trade value is nil. You’ll get a bag of used kicking balls for him at best. A shame. Tebow (and his legions of idiot bible thumper fans) may be annoying, but his attitude and work ethic are sound.

  27. Denver fans can blame themselves. Everyone knows he was drafted as a project and would take a few years at the very least, but nooooo, you have Denver fans calling for him in his 2nd season with the expectation that he’s ready to start now. Except he’s not, and now there is all this pressure on this kid when nothing has really changed in the first place. He’s still a project.

Denver is just a mess. They’re down there with the Bengals, Raiders, and Bills as far as being a poorly ran franchise. You got John Elway calling all the shots with no front office experience, and fans just blindly following him because he’s “John Elway.” It’s a joke really.

  28. This is just more fuel to the fire that is Tim Tebow’s Passion. With His grace Tebow will succeed in the NFL and become the greatest quarterback God’s world has ever seen.

  29. Sounds like Tim trying to play his way out of Denver asap. Makes sense. The organization is off in a dysfunctional direction.

    ____________

You’re darn right they’re in first place! 20-6 to be exact! Unfortunately, in Game 7 of the WNBA Western Conference Finals, with the game tied near the end, Lindsay Whalen will ignore a wide open Maya Moore under the basket and force a pass across her body to a double-covered Seimone Augustus that gets intercepted, and the Lynx will lose in overtime.

  31. If this is true, Tebow should be cut immediately to give him a chance to get picked up by another team. It’s is very classless to keep him around as the whipping boy. If the Broncos cut him before Sept 2nd when his $6.28M bonus is due, they will save that money and rid themselves of the Tebow spotlight drama.

  32. They should have talked him up, traded him to some sucker team in need of a QB, and at least got something out of it. Saying he’s a 4th string QB on the Broncos won’t really help whatever trade value he had in the first place…

  33. Tebow produced 11 TDs with 3 starts as a rookie. Elway produced 8 TDs in 10 starts as a rookie. Wonder where Horsehead would fit on the chart if he was 23 years old again?

Damn are people that obsessed with the Eagles that they make their way into the conversation in a Tim Tebow article?

  36. I’m beginning to hate any post online about Tim Tebow. It always brings out the Tebow Haters (people who hate his guts for no valid reason) and the Tebow Marks (people who think he’s the greatest thing since sliced bread for no valid reason). I fall in the middle. If he succeeds, fine. If he fails, I wont take any pleasure in it. He’s not going up against my LSU Tigers anymore so he’s cool with me.

  37. @grizzkev, what work ethic. He is all talk. If he had such a good work ethic than why was he touring the country with his book and not getting with some QB gurus and working on his game? Talk is cheap and that is all Tebow is. He hasn’t proven to have any special work ethic, just says he does.

  38. Going from 1st to 2nd year is suppose to be the biggest improvement for an NFL QB. Looks like he went backwards.

  39. What’s with the “unnamed source” thing? If you’re not man enough to put your name to your comment, shut up. Now we want to know: who is this coward from the front office?

This is what we do know: Mr. Elway has an opportunity to rescue a player who’s swinging in the wind, and he’s not. Actions speak louder than words.

  40. I thought he looked decent last year , how did he suddenly regress ? Bad coaching maybe ? Give denver a 6th rd pick and work your magic Philly .

  41. If Tebow can’t handle being a QB, then make him a fullback. He obviously likes to run the ball, but isn’t good at passing. It would make sense.

  42. Tebow produced the best passer rating of any rookie QB last season. The best YPC by a full 3 yards per over Bradford. He also should have had more rushing TDs than any rookie RB. Ryan Matthews went to town on the Bronco defense in the game they played to nip Tebow by one.

  43. He needs to bang that hot girlfriend of his at long last, let some of those constricting poisons out and loosen up….ONLY THEN, will have he a chance to develop into a smoother looking player.

  44. @snowpea84 Yeah VY is 30-18 as a starter anfYeah Vick is horrible , I mean runner up to MVP.Are you serious? Stop insulting football players when your football knowledge is a joke . You dont see people bashing you for calling yourself snowpea , so calm down snowpea !

  45. “this Broncos staff may never fully embrace him as the answer. They see him as a project.”

    — They don’t see him as a project – they see him as a scapegoat. It gives them a free year to suck, and at the end of the year, they can say, “well what could you expect? We had Josh McDaniels’ Tebow albatross hung around our necks all year long”.

It’s an NFL coach’s dream. They get to suck, draw a paycheck, and at the end of it all blame it on someone else so that there is absolutely no risk of losing their jobs until after next year. The entire Bronco’s staff should send 20% of their paychecks to McDaniels this season as a little “thank you”.

Coward? Sounds more like you Tebow freaks just want to know who was dissing your Savior so that you can discredit him and make up some bullcrap about how he is biased and doesn’t know what he is talking about. Get over it you morons. It takes more than acting like a good person to be a good QB in the NFL. You don’t draft QBs in the 1st round when you have every intention about changing EVERYTHING about their throwing motion… it doesn’t take a moron to figure that out.

  47. As a Broncos season ticket holder, this makes me feel like we have a coach (and front office) that now has a brain.

The Nazarene is fool. He would have never drafted Tebow.

  51. His 15 minutes of fame are just about up. I sure wish they would have traded Orton, then the Broncos would be even easier to whup.I’ve been laughing all along, now, 4th stringer! If he didn’t cost them, they’d cut him.Elway apparently has saved Denver once again, darn it!

  52. I hope they don’t cut him. Half the idiots in Jacksonville would be screaming for the Jags to pick him up. I don’t want to go through that again.

  53. Interesting part of the article about Tebow being hurt by the lack of an off-season this year. That talk about “investment,” signals to me that they won’t cut or trade Tebow yet. (Sorry, Mr. Weber.)

If he’s still 4th on the QB depth chart in August 2012, the Broncos will cut him. Or maybe trade him… it would be very interesting to see if they’d trade Tebow to St. Louis to the welcoming arms of Josh McDaniels… would St. Louis do the trade with Bradford as the starter?

  56. “Forget about how [Tebow] delivers the ball, or how accurate it is. First he has to know where to go with it.”

So, not only can he not throw, he wouldn’t know where to throw if he could.

At this point he is so bad even god thinks he sucks.

  57. Cmon, Elway was one of the best quarterbacks in NFL history. You don’t think he can see how Tebow is developing. He knows a good quarterback when he sees one. He must not see one in Tebow.

  58. I like and respect Tebow personally. But none of this should surprise anyone. Tebow had never seen a pro-style offense. He was a take-one-read-and-run spread QB with a bad throwing motion. I don’t care how many awards he won in college–the NFL is a different world. His chances of making it as a QB were always limited. Holmgren said as much before the draft, and that man knows his QBs.

Tim should have gone in the third or fourth round to a team like Pittsburgh or New Orleans that had a strong starter and could take time to develop him or try him out as a tight end or fullback. Instead McDaniels screwed him with the most idiotic draft grandstand since Ditka and Ricky Williams.

After McDaniels, these trade-talking fools, and wildly delusional reporters and fans made Tebow believe he was on track to be the next Elway, it will be tough to reposition him. And that may be the only chance he has for NFL success. But I hope Denver deals him next year. He needs to go where the coaching staff will respect who and what he can bring instead of resenting that they’re overpaying for someone who can’t live up to the hype.

  59. Whether Tebow makes it eventually as a QB or not, the organization’s behavior in this matter is reprehensible.

  60. Wonder where Horsehead would fit on the chart if he was 23 years old again?

    —————————————

What does Shannon Sharpe have to do with this?

  61. I think Mike McCarthy and Tom Clements could make a QB out of him in due time.

Next year Matt Flynn will be moving on and Harrell will most likely get a shot at being #2. Wouldn’t mind seeing if they could make something out of him. Wouldn’t be a bad situation for him either – talented team, strong locker room, good coaches. Why not?

You seem to think that another team would want a project like Tebow.

This ought to be another lesson to NFL GMs to avoid QBs who played in a QB-friendly gimmick system where they didn’t have to make reads or work out of the shotgun. They invariably can’t make the transition to the NFL where they have to make decisions and come to terms with blitzes.

Also, they should avoid Heisman winning QBs like the plague. There has been ONE (Palmer) better than average Heisman winning QB since 1990. That’s pathetic.

  64. Seriously, I don’t get why people think this is insulting.

We’re talking about an NFL team. A PROFESSIONAL football team.

To be called the fourth best quarterback on a professional football team, when you’re not even a quarterback, is pretty damn impressive if you ask me.

I doubt Brodrick Bunkley wouldn’t be complaining if they said he was the 4th best QB on the team.

  65. Josh McDaniels was the idiot that pulled the trigger for Tebow to be drafted so high, therefore soooooooo overrated…just another reason why McDaniels wasn’t ready for the big time shot at head coach.

Flashy coach going after a flashy SEC quarterback is all.

  66. “cant believe you wasted a first rounder on him, everyone else had him at the 3rd round or later.”

    ——————————-

    What a lame remark.

How do you know ‘everyone else’ had him at 3rd round or later? You got a frigging hotline to ever personnel department at every NFL team? Who knows where Tebow would have gone if McDaniels had passed on him.

I want Tebow to succeed but it looks like his bubble is deflating fast. It’s a shame. I like the guy. If he’s willing to consider it, I’m all for keeping him as a multi-purpose FB,RB,TE,Special teamer.

  67. Media: Tebow you are such a good guy, but we hate that. So we are going to try and write non-relevant stories about how much you suck or how no one wants you around. This should help ratings, and make you feel awful for being a good person. Serves you right!

  68. Given that I’m a Raider fan, I don’t like Tebow the player, but honestly people need to lay off the kid. Piling on was passed a long time ago; now it’s to the point of beating him with a stick. I’m not remotely religious and think people like Tebow live in fantasy land, but that’s his business and should have no bearing on how someone views him as a Football player.

This kid was one of the greatest College football players of all time, never says a bad thing about anybody and works his ass off. Give him a break already. He didn’t ask to be drafted where he was. He may not make it, but it won’t be from lack of effort. No wonder the Broncos suck so bad. No support for your own players, and giving anonymous quotes deriding a player who hasn’t even started his second year?

Enjoy another year in the crapper Donkeys.

  69. He(Tebow) didn’t go 2-1 at the end of last season, the BRONCOS went 2-1 at the end of last season. If he can’t figure out how to run an offense in the NFL obviously he shouldn’t be quarterbacking, and pulling the ball down and running with it the majority of the time isn’t going to produce a growing offense in Denver.
This guy got paid, he can shut up and build a temple. He is College Gameday Commentator in the making!

  70. r8rsfan says: “This kid is approaching JaMarcus territory.” Most ignorant post of the day. Russell failed because he was unmotivated and supremely lazy and dishonest to boot. As despised as the Raiders organization is, they were classier than the current Broncos regime is.

  71. Hmmm… not to long ago, about the time that they flung Orton out on the trading block, didn’t Elway say, “I think where we are as an organization, we are going with Tim,”?

    Don’t worry. He did.

    Weird.

I’d like to know who this “executive” is that Silver talked to.

And when Tebow is the #2 this weekend will there be stories about how he amazingly leap-frogged both Weber and Quinn in LESS THAN ONE WEEK?

    Doubt it.

  72. On the one hand, there’s absolutely no reason for Elway, Fox or anybody else with the Broncos to have it in for Tebow–his success would be their success and it would save them having to draft another QB down the road. That said, I can’t fathom why there are so many negative leaks coming out of the organization about him.

Even if they’d totally given up on him, the LAST thing they should be saying are bad things because that kills their leverage if they wanted to trade him. Right now, teams would be stupid to offer anything in a trade; they can just wait for Denver to release him.

    ————————————————————

Actually your facts can be disputed. He went 1-2 as a starter, not 2-1. his only win your your fantastic 300 yard game was against the WORST pass defence in the league. Even weber could throw for 300 on last years Texans. The other 2 games he LOST were to teams that couldn’t make the playoff and could care less about the outcome, and yet MEbow still couldn’t do anything.
It would take about 1 minute for defensive coordinator to figure out to just crowd the line and stop tebust from running, keep him in the pocket and force him to throw to beat you. The bronco’s wold be 2-14 with this clown as the starting QB.

  75. What a lame remark.

  76. If Tebow is really this bad what’s he even doing in the NFL?

And if current 4th sting QB Adam Weber is better than Tebow why is it that he has no chance to make the team?
    That’s just stupid.

I’m pretty sick of hearing about Tebow now. If he’s that much of a”project” it sounds like he’s a project not worth dealing with. Give it up.

  77. Hold on Tim, u won’t be on this ship for long. These sports guys will be doing their best to get Cam in the same boat with u soon. Don’t think they aren’t working on it.

We all know that those who report the news is also very good at predicting the future of those they like and dislike, even if they have to manipulate it a bit.

Speaking of likes…Where all the write ups of the other choosen draft athlete, Patrick Peterson. Heard he’s not doing to well on his team. Near a word is uttered by you media folks about it. Just nonstop write-ups on those whose NFL careers u predicted to not go very far.

  78. Tim Tebow. The only 4th string QB in the league with more endorsement deals than most starters.

This guy is Eric Crouch redux but with a hell of a lot more hype because simply because he’s a Jesus freak and can’t seem to quit sucking up to the media.

  79. All the haters are not able to back themselves up at all. I am a life long Broncos fan, and this is just out of control. He has started THREE FREAKING GAMES. Lost one by a good margin, won the next, and lost the other by 5 points. What everyone doesn’t understand, or take into consideration is the fact our defense was ranked LAST IN THE LEAGUE. Give the kid a good O line, and a full offseason after this year, and a revamped defense next year, and he is going to be great.

Mike McCoy (OC) likes the kid, and they are not hurting anything keeping him as the third string for the rest of the season. He can come in and do specialty packages in the red zone (Orton’s weakness). He learns, and learns, and learns all season, and then has a FULL offseason to fix whatever is not working right, at this moment. Remember, he could only work on everything without any offseason program.

He is NOT a bust. Work in progress, YES. He will work harder, and better than any other QB in the league to get better, and noone can deny that. Once he gets it, which could be soon, he will get it. If the Broncos trade him away, it will be a mistake that will bite them in the A S S for a long time. We aren’t going to the Super Bowl this year, so everyone just needs to relax.

Hate away people, but remember one thing, it is easier to criticize someone on their faults, then to critique their good values.

  80. QDog112

I just feel like JaMarcus Russell causing a great big earthquake on the east coast is a little more newsworthy than Tebow getting demoted at QB once again……. just saying

  81. Again, I have to say that I don’t understand how Orton gets elevated so highly in all of these “Tim Tebow stinks” arguments. Tebow may stink. That doesn’t mean Orton is the best QB in the league. Wasn’t he the guy who led them most of the year to the 2nd pick in the draft?

Tebow probably isn’t the answer in Denver. Quinn is a solid back up. I’d have to say that I view Orton as a really solid back up in this league, too.

  82. *If they really think Tebow is that bad, why don’t they trade him?*

Every trade has to have a trade partner. Why would a team give up anything for a 4th string QB when there’s about to be a bunch on the market after cuts.

    *Merrill hoge is a genius*

NFL Matchup is by far the best NFL show on the air. Too bad it’s only a half hour.

Taking a shot at homeschooling shows your ignorance. On average, homeschooled kids far exceed government-schooled kids in test scores and success in college, even controlling for socioeconomic status.

    WHAT???????

    You CAN’T be serious.

He wasn’t even the greatest college player during his college CAREER.

    Get a grip, people.

If Tebow was any good, they’d be putting him at least at #2. Now he’s #4.

What does that tell you? You see any quarterback-starved teams lining up to get him???

No one OWES him anything; he needs to EARN it the way every other quarterback does.

  85. “One high-ranking official”
    Who might that be?
Name your sources if you want to be credible. I could call myself a high-ranking official of the Denver Broncos and spread rumors too.
This is a bunch of BS, I’m sorry Tim.
I’m a Denver fan for life, but Tim Tebow is my favorite athlete.
Denver if you aren’t going to use him and his talent then trade him somewhere to where he can prove you all wrong.
If Denver trades him, it could come back at the worst move the Denver Broncos ever made.
Man this has gotten out of hand.

  86. I am not going to bash Tebow. But I will say this…….Sometimes I just do not understand how some GMs and so called draft gurus have their jobs. Many people knew this kid would have a hard time playing QB in the NFL, so why waste a 1st rd pick, put undue pressure on him and set him and your team up for failure? The guy has talent and there is no denying that but he does not have the skills to play QB. A 1st rd QB should not have the issue that Tebow had coming out of college. Most NFL fans knew this, most sports writers knew this so why didn’t the GM at the time or McDaniels know this? I mean I would love to have a job where I get paid a ton of money to screw someones team up even if it was just for a year.

  87. As a Broncos fan, I don’t want to see (yet, another) 1st round pick go to waste and Tebow doesn’t show anything that indicates he will ever be an NFL QB. That doesn’t mean the kid can’t ball, at all. I could see him being a good pass-catching TE (where we have no room) or the 2nd modern player (Chris Cooley) to invoke “What the hell is an h-back?”

He has NFL play-maker potential, but not as a QB.

  88. You know, if all this stuff is true then the Broncos are handling this very stupidly. Why not just keep their mouths shut and put him on the trade block? All they’re doing by saying stuff like this is killing any value he might have and their only options will be to keep a QB that they clearly don’t want and pray that he can put it together (he won’t in the system they want to run, he’s not a John Elway type of QB) or cut him. The Broncos brass are idiots.

  89. I understand McDaniels trying to get his own pet project in house. However, I think about all the OTHER moves that he made which set the franchise back. Alphonso Smith for one…trading a 1st round pick for a 2nd round pick which was an undersized corner that couldn’t tackle to save his life (see Deion Branch on Thanksgiving in 2010), Trading Cutler, Brandon Marshall and Peyton Hillis and replacing them with Brady Quinn, Knowshown Moreno and Brandon Lloyd. Completely overhauling the defense and switching to a 3-4 when the personnel did not match it…at least phase into it! No, he cut, slashed and burned the defense, which wilted down the stretch in his two year run. Tebow is the smallest of issues that has befallen the Broncos. If McDaniels managed the team correctly and did not cap it into purgatory, he would be still be coach and Tebow would be tucked away safely training to be the QOTF. The only reason why this is an issue is because he is under the microscope with a staff that does not want him. They are the ones purposely leaking this info out in order to justify his release or relegation to Charlie Whitehurst country.

  90. What do Tebow’s religious beliefs have to do with evaluating his quarterback potential? If he’d said he was an atheist, would you be posting about Baby Beelzebub and at least he’s number one on Satan’s team? 🙄

It’s like I took a wrong turn and wound up in a junior high cafeteria.

  91. Good grief! One minute he is going to be personally mentored by Elway with no talks of trade/cut, the next he’s below the wateboy on the depth chart. Will someone in that organization please clarify?

Some do hate Tim Tebow because he is Tim Tebow, but not everyone. I like his athleticism, love his enthusiasm and don’t think being openly Christian is a negative. However, he has proven that he isn’t ready to be a starting QB and hasn’t shown anything to indicate that he is any closer than when he was drafted. As I’ve already said, I think he has the potential to have a great NFL career, but not at Quarterback.

  93. Serves the anti-choicer religious freak right!

Still, I would love to see how he fails against the Packers D when he plays them!

    —————————————————————-

    I dunno about anyone else….
But I can’t stand those religious Jesus freaks who feel like it is their right, their duty to spread the word.
If I want religion, I’ll go to a church. I don’t need some Jesus freak preaching to me about it on those black things they have below their eyes.
They should keep religion and beliefs off the field. That goes for those prayer circles after the games as well. Wanna pray? Love god and Jesus? Fine. But do it somewhere in private.

  96. Its a shame to read all the negative articles about Tebow. It would be one thing if this kid came out with an attitude like Cam Newton but the kid is his humble and just wants to play football. All the quotes coming out of the Broncos organization tell me that they dont want him as a Bronco – even if thats not the case, all the quotes coming from the organization give that implication, IMO. They should cuthe kid loose and cut their losses if they dont see any value in him.

  97. I will put it out there, I am a huge Tim Tebow fan. That said..the Bronco’s management did not draft Tebow, McDaniel’s did.

Tim seems like Sarah Palin with the way he is attacked and smeared through the media, and I think it only has a little to do with his religion. No one on the team is invested in him and I truly believe that John Elway, a local legend and Hall of Famer, resents him. I think John sees a player who is extremely popular, nationally, and his ego cannot handle it. While I do not think that John is unprofessional enough to try to stunt Tim’s growth, it is clear that SOMEONE within the organization is on some kind of political smear campaign against him. The amount of “sources” within the organization who are taking shots at this kid is shocking. What high level player would want to play for an organization who takes shots through the media at its own players?

In Denver, there is a lot of controversy over this player, with one side of fans who are hateful toward him and another side who blindly follow and defend him. I think most people are just looking to find a connection with someone and Tim and his style of play is something many people find appealing.

I do acknowledge that Kyle Orton is a good, consistent QB who has handled this whole media created mess perfectly, because inside the locker room, I don’t think there has been an issue. Kyle is the better QB, and I think all anyone wants is for the Broncos to support Tim Tebow and try to develop him into an effective starter. This smear campaign is just awful and painful to watch. It looks horrible for the Broncos.

  98. This “official” is not a smart football man. Try to channel the 90’s Pack or Niners or modern Eagles and try to recoup some of your investment….if a 2nd rounder can be had for Aj feeler anything is possible. Hype the guy, don’t tear him down. Idiots.

  99. All John Elway has done is turn the bronco franchise into a high school hallway with all the leaked whispers and rumors. It’s ridiculous. This team is being run like it’s amateur hour.

Facts are Tebow played decently last year. He won a game and like any rookie had his downs. But I thought they had something they could build from.

  100. Okay, so the guy isn’t very accurate, can’t throw it very far and takes too long to release the football. But he’s really great at rallying his teammates for a spirited version of “Kumbaya.”

On a serious note, the Broncos are really hammering the trade value of one of their own players. They should shop him and try to get a #5 somewhere or something, but it makes it difficult to get good value when all you do is allow leaks to the public about how bad one of your guys is.

  101. Hey!!

Corey Chavous of Draft Nasty really liked Adam Weber and thought he was a “down the road” kind of guy.

Maybe his thoughts are coming to fruition???

  102. @kurb21

“What high level player would want to play for an organization who takes shots through the media at its own players?”

Agree with everything you said about Tebow except this. Tebow isn’t a high-level player, he’s a first-round draft pick with a national profile. And right now, that 1st rounder is 4th on the depth chart?? Any organization that had the same situation would have just as many doubters and leakers taking potshots through the media.

In fact, he’s got it easy in Denver. Imagine if this were Chicago or Philly. Tebow wouldn’t leave his house.

  103. We just picked up our “project” QB or I would want Tebow!

Raider fans, they are going to do the same crucifixation job on Pryor when he struggles but the media will make it Al Davis’ fault.

    Al alway gets the bullet.

On a side note, The Raider -Denver game was much closer last year when Tebow played…….just saying.

  104. I’m really trying and struggling to figure out Denver’s motivations with these brutally pessimistic, anonymously planted quotes. I just can’t figure out WHY they’re saying the things they’re saying.

The most puzzling part is that they’re imploding the trade market for him by so thoroughly exposing the flaws in his game. Who does that??

I came up with other possible theories, but all of them seemed too convoluted or there would be a huge hole in the logical reasoning. (i.e., Are they trying to motivate him through the press? And so on.)

I happen to think sheer incompetence is the “why” behind this public blasting of a young athlete with an unclear skill set. Meaning that a team capable of drafting a clear project – Tebow – in Round 1 is also probably capable of botching how to handle him and how to smoothly transition him into some other role on offense. My guess is that they’re probably just running their mouths in exasperation that they can’t get him to play better, and not thinking about the fact that agents, other players, college talent and so forth are observing how the Broncos handle this tricky situation.

So, basically, whoever is talking, for whatever reason, is a doing the team a huge disservice and should shut the f up, immediately.

  105. Not a fan or hater of Tebow, but the dude did win 25% of the games you won last year as a rookie. If Orton is that much better, you’d think he could’ve put together more than 3 wins. Orton won 3/13, or 23% of games started, whereas Tebow won 1/3, or 33%. Give the dude a chance man.

  106. If Tebow were purely viewed as a McDaniels project he would be gone, along with the other hires that the current management has already jettisoned. But this is a business, not a personal vendetta against McDaniels.

Long-time Broncos fans remember the crap Elway took during the many years before he finally won a Super Bowl. Tebow screwed up when he spent the offseason working on things other than what he was supposed to be working on. He knows it, the coaches know it, and the fans know it. Tebow will either gut it out and do what it takes to earn the starter’s job, or he’s going to find himself off the team.

But thanks to this article, I now know that Denver now has four quarterbacks it would rather have than Jay Cutler.

  107. So it took an over-drafted non-Pro Style QB and mild interest from Miami to make Kyle Orton a ‘star’. Heady days, Kyle. Heady days.

Enjoy it while it lasts. There’s a reason Miami wouldn’t pay that 3rd.

  108. All you bedwetting bleeding hearts that think the Broncos are being unfair to Tebow need to pump the brakes. If this so-called leak is real it’s nothing new in the NFL, every team does it, even your favorite team.

If the fact that it’s happening to such a media/fan darling makes it unbearable to you perhaps you’re better off sticking to Disney movies. Tuck in your skirt, Princess! It happens all the time.

And to those idiots that think John Elway is threatened or resentful of a Tim Tebow, you are literally too stupid to insult so l won’t waste any more time on that.

    The only problem with that theory is this;

Elway was born with gifts that no current NFL QB can match considered by some to be the best draft prospect of all time, Sports Illustrated’s “Gods Gift To Football”. He played numerous PB’s and 5 SB’s, winning 2 Championships while going out on top as the SB MVP.

A First Ballot HoFer he later went on to be just as successful in business and personal life where he was busy banging Playboy Playmates and Raiderettes when he wasn’t building/selling car dealerships worths tens of millions and buying/guiding an Fake Football Arena League to a Championship.

Elway has moved on to a new challenge after the owner of the only NFL team he ever played for came begging for him to return and give a galactically incompetent franchise some semblance of respectability.

And yet YOU…….think John Elway is somehow threatened or resentful of an overdrafted 3rd to 5th round underwear salesman?

My Guess is that you were either still a cheerleader for your older brothers Pop Warner football eam the last time John Elway played or just obscenely stupid…….

  109. This is just the media starting stuff all over again. They hate any team west of the Mississippi except for the Cowboys. They will write anything on pure speculation-and it is always their speculation.

  110. Fox or the Broncos are either blowing any of the his value for trade bait or there snoop dogging (doubtful) and putting in a package but seems like your invested in him for this year. work him in , he got some skills. maybe going into the playoffs you smokescreen but beginning of the year. don’t sound good for Tebow in Den.

    Oooh, direct hit.

Attempting to say Tebow’s belief system shouldn’t factor into these discussions anymore than a Muslim, Jewish, or Atheist player’s would, so people should give the tired, childish Christian jokes a rest. No, mine was not an appropriate analogy. But yours was an excellent comeback. Well done.

  112. If he were gay instead of religious, would all these attacks on way of life be permitted?

    Indeed. An upside down world.

    Signs and Wonders.

  113. Who cares what religion the guy is… He cannot play QB in the NFL, not at all. He should have been a 3rd round project QB when drafted.

Josh McDaniels really screwed you fans in Denver. Orton has another good 5 years in him and potentially 8 years, barring injury. Tebow = Ken Dorsey, a proven winner with good individual stats, but surrounded by great players that made him look good.

Teams were smart with Dorsey, though, he was taken late and teams saw what he could do — which wasn’t too much.

  114. I saw more than my fair share of Adam Weber games… this my friends is the worst possible thing anyone could ever say about Timothy Richard Tebow… He might want to start studying for the Series 7 and the Series 66. If this report is true… his career is over.

    Poor Tebow.

but them saying Weber is better… effing hilarious!

  115. “They see him as a project.”
Yeah. That was kind of the point. Get him a good coach, and after a few years of development, combine his newfound QB skills with the work ethic and drive he’s already got, and who knows what could happen. But that only works if you’re willing to work with him.

  116. Tim Tebow is a project to the point that nobody can be sure what his floor is, much less his ceiling.

Forget the fact that was a 1st rnd pick, that he’s a great guy who can sell ice to an eskimo…….forget that he performs circumcisions in 3rd world countries and was homeschooled…….forget that he went 1-2 in 3 unearned starts, threw for 300 yac yards against the worst pass defense in recent memory and could be paid almost $10 mil in 2 pro seasons to do nothing more than provide a spark off the bench…….forget all that and you’ll come to the same conclusion that the presense of Tim Tebow shouldn’t have any more bearing on the Denver Broncos future plans at the QB position than any other 5th round QB prospect.

They’ll keep him, they’re stuck with him, they have no choice but to try to develop him. If he develops into something, gravy, but they’d be wise to have a Plan A, Plan B and Plan C.

But be careful what you wish for, tho, Denver, you may just end up with Kyle Ortonary…….

  117. GEE…what a surprise. sorry all you blind tebow worshipers, but its about time the band aid was ripped off. his not an nfl QB.

  118. The Broncos have the worst message boards in PFT now. It is all Tebow, all the time. How many religious zingers, bust proclaiming rants, and ‘long-term project ‘apologist comments can there be?? Is it the same people posting on him over and over?

It’s tired and it’s played out. Stop The Madness.

I would take a story on anything else at this point.

The only redeeming part of these threads is when somebody takes a quick timeout to recognize Josh McDaniels as a complete asshat.

  119. “If he were gay instead of religious, would all these attacks on way of life be permitted?”

Have you seen the comments on the gay-issue articles?

I think saying people hate him because of his religion is, at the very least, being overly simplistic. There have been many outspoken religious players, and few took the kind of heat Tebow has. I think the frustration aimed at Tebow is more the result of him constantly (sometimes through no fault of his own) being in the spotlight. If he were gay, or a different skin color, or politically outspoken, people would mask their resentment in those issues.

I also want to point out that there is a huge difference between critique someone’s religious or political views, and their sexual orientation and skin color. If you don’t know the difference, ask your smartest friend to explain it to you. If they don’t know the difference, find new friends.

  120. A side note, any Denver fan that says they are happier with the current QBs over Jay Cutler is, in my opinion, crazy. Jay Cutler on the bears is what he is (and to be fair, he did get to the NFCCG). But Jay Cutler on the Broncos was pretty darn good.

  123. I can’t believe Minnesota didn’t give Webb a shot. He started vs the Eagles and he picked them apart. They had no answer for him whatsoever. I was hoping Tebow would prove the “HATERS” wrong but he’s proving them right as the time goes on. Maybe they’re not”HATERS” maybe they’re EXPERTS.

  124. This is all obviously a PR move by the Broncos to discredit Tebow to the fans so that they can move him. So be it. Orton is not the future, so I can only hope we go 0 – 16 and get Andrew Luck next year. Unfortunately, the “brain trust” of the Broncos have improved the defense and Orton will get about 6 wins, taking us out of the Luck lottery and condemning the Broncos to mediocrity for years to come, unless they can figure out some other way to get a franchise quarterback.

  125. I don’t know if this has been posted yet, but Erik Decker used to be Adam Weber’s favorite target at Minnesota. It doesn’t surprise me that Weber looks better than expected. One of his buds is probably helping him out a lot.

That said, you would think that Tebow would recognize Decker’s talent. I mean, he made Weber look good at Minnesota, and apparently at Denver as well, you would think that Timmy would work more with the guy. Perhaps he isn’t. His loss. Decker is pretty good. I know his stats aren’t great yet, but the guy can play. He could be another version of Wes Welker.

Joe Webb started against the Eagles. He’s still on the Vikings’ roster. Adam Weber is on the Broncos’ roster and he used to play for the University of Minnesota. These are two different people.

  127. They are doing this kid no favor by keeping him around. I see it as low grade tortue. Cut him or waive him. But don’t keep insulting the kid publicly. He sure doesn’t deserve that from his management, team mates or coaches. The water in Denver appears to be too red with Tebow blood right now. If Kyle Orton (who is actually pretty good), and Brady Quinn fail. Denver fans won’t forgive Elway or the coaches about how they treated Tim Tebow. He may not be as good as those three other guys right now, with his confidence shot. But why say it? Just release him and allow the kid to find his mojo or destiny somewhere else. Even Canada, if it helps him. This is starting to remind me of the Doug Flutie situation.

  128. Tim Tebow and Vince Young have something in common, their glory was built on the college stage and it seems that Denver drafted Tim Tebow for his image and college success and not his pro potential and now what some were saying about his talent then has come to the surface cus I just don’t believe that if Denver doesn’t draft him at that pick then he would have fallen to maybe the 4th or 5th round if that, and at worst, at least Vince Young has shown glimpses of stardon if only he can leave Austin Texas behind my oh my, he just might be a starter again, heck I’ll take him as a Dolphin! he CAIN’T be worst than what’s already there.

  129. Good point, vinnide64. His image was more as a leader, and at that time, Darrent Williams was killed, and there were other instances of the lockerroom becoming a bit fractured.

Would be interesting if Vince Young goes to another team….and Tim Tebow is traded to Eagles in 2012.
