Don’t worry about signing Troy. This is Farrior’s and Aaron Smith’s last season. That will free up a lot of money. Signing Troy will be the #1 priority next season, and if they can’t for some reason, they will franchise him like they did with Woodley this year.

The Steelers will be looking great on their cap, not a problem.

Aaron Smith is in his 13th year(Hood and Heyward)
Casey Hampton has 1-2 years left (Alan Gray)
Farrior is around 36 years old (Steven Sylevestor)
Ike Taylor already signed for 4 more
Harrison signed long term
Got rid of Starks contract (huge)
Woodley signed long term
Roethlisber signed long term
Colon signed long term
Pouncey good for 4 more years minimum

No, they are built to last, as always.

Step right up Wallace and Troy, you are next.

Harrison & Foote are both getting old, the young body makes total sense. The contract most likely is filled with gauranteed money spread out over the 6 years that doesn’t count against the cap. They probabably lowered thier Salary Cap in the process…

Congrats to Timmons and the Steelers. I’m real glad he didn’t slip away.

I’d like to see Troy not turn up gimp in the middle of the season before extending him. He can be tagged, and Wallace will be a restricted free agent after the season, so there is time IMO.

After year 1 when neither of his new draft picks saw playing time or made an impact, Steeler fans speculated that Tomlin was a bust. Pretty funny in retrospect – now that Timmons and Woodley are among the top few LBs in the league.

Just goes to show you – you shouldn’t judge a guy until he gets a chance to show you what he’s got on the field for a couple of seasons.

I’ll bet dollars to donuts he see’s every penny of this contract. Lawrence Timmons is only 25 yrs old. Unless he suffers a major injury, he’s goin’ be in black n’ gold for a long time.

Timmons would be very good in any defensive system. He played outside backer in college…the Steelers converted him to inside. If Harrison or Woodley got hurt he could very well move. Timmons is a very good tackler and can cover. Great burst. Harrison probably only has 2 more good years, so his contract won’t be a factor. Very good job keeping the core of their linebackers intact. Now lets get Polamalu and Wallace locked up!

Timmons would be valuable to any defense that runs a 3-4. There are few LB’s if any that match his combination of speed explosiveness and power. He is very effective as an inside or outside LB. He’s much more athletic than Harrison or Woodley, but since he plays inside he doesn’t get the sacks, and therefore doesnt get the attention.

In the context of young linebacker signings, this is not a bad deal. Patrick Willis signed a 5-year deal for $50M last season. Jon Beason matched it. David Harris signed a 4-year deal for $36M. His salary this season was scheduled to be $650,000 this season. It is very plausible that they increased his salary this year, spread the money out over all 6 years, making his yearly cap hit $8.3M a year. It gives the appearance of matching Willis/Beason/Harris, but will have a smaller cap impact per season.

Not a Steelers fan, but I am pretty sure I have not heard any hold out issues with this team. Strong organizations rarely have those type of problems.

They still need to sign Troy, but I can see them in big cap trouble down the road. Then again they always seem to know what they are doing and do it well.

You obviously don’t understand the 3-4 and you need to understand a defense beyond sack totals. Check out thE top tacklers on the Steelers. Timmons is arguably the best LB on the Steelers.

Lawrence Timmons is the PREMIER MIDDLE LINEBACKER in the AFC. PERIOD, Timmons can blitz, tackle and cover a WR or RB. Ray Lewis has lived on his resume for years but its Timmons time to claim he is the best MLB in the AFC. Look for the Steelers to cut CB Bryant McFadden, earns $2.5 mill, to help get under the cap.

Boy, that’s a lot of money they are playing LBs, but they are most likely worth it.

I rather play a excellent LB that type of money than a RB.

Have to see the contract, but it doesn’t sound like much of a discount. Keep in mind that he is more valuable to PIT than to most other teams. But assuming that they want to retain Polomalu, they are on the way to cap hell if the cap doesn’t inflate pretty fast.
