The devastating loss of Giants cornerback Terrell Thomas to a torn ACL leaves the Giants very thin at cornerback.

Possible dime back Bruce Johnson is out for the year. Brian Witherspoon sprained his MCL Monday. First-round pick Prince Amukamara is out with a broken foot.

“The expectation bar just feels like it got a lot higher for me, so I just need to continue staying in it mentally,"Amukamara told the Newark Star-Ledger.

The rookie hopes to return to the lineup sometime in October. Even when he’s back, it’s hard to imagine him starting.

Aaron Ross, the team’s first round pick in 2007, started camp by refusing to play safety. He was needed as an outside cornerback even before Thomas’ injury, and will now be counted upon as a starter.

“I’m ready to go. It’s unfortunate that it happened that way, but I have to fill his shoes,” Ross said.

I was all set to pick the Giants to win the NFC East. Thomas’ injury makes it a little tougher. If New York is going to surprise people, Ross will have to play a big role.
