Tressel says it’ll be “scary” to see what Pryor can do

Terrelle Pryor Pro Day Getty Images

Former Ohio State coach Jim Tressel and former Ohio State quarterback Terrelle Pryor share a close bond.  And while anything Tressel says about Pryor needs to be viewed through that lens, Tressel has said something pretty strong about Pryor’s pro potential.

“I think it’ll be scary to see what he can do for this reason — watching the progress [on Saturday] after he had just six weeks where all he did was football,” Tressel told Albert Breer of NFL.com.  “College involves going to class, doing schoolwork, and the social aspects of being that age.  Now that he can do football and play quarterback 24-7, and that’s really what he wants to do, his development might happen quicker than people think.

“He’s as attentive as you can possibly imagine. It means a lot to him.  And he’s at his best when folks are doubting him and, I think, with the suspension you have that.”

Folks are definitely doubting Pryor now.  He’ll soon get a chance to prove them wrong.

That would describe any rookie coming into the league. Do you really think after he signs his contract and starts getting paid in dollars instead of tattoos he won’t be able to find anything else to distract him from football?

Coach Tres left out, “College includes getting free tattoos, associating with drug dealers, signing a lot of merchandise, and getting free cars from local dealers.”

I wonder if they share matching tattoos as well

He’s got incredible physical tools for this position, but who does he have to mentor him and keep him on track?

    Nobody. That’s who.

  5. wehager says: Aug 23, 2011 2:25 PM

Campbell, Boller and Trent Edwards all in the last year of their contracts…. the young QB better get ready to run soon.

  6. unbiased8383 says: Aug 23, 2011 2:26 PM

It’s suprising how loyal Tressel is to a guy who’s a major reason he’s not coaching this year. Could be that he’s a good kid and the press just blew this thing up.

  7. bolt4life says: Aug 23, 2011 2:35 PM

The hype about this guy is amazing. From my understanding of the whole situation, I hope he fails. Forcing his way into the NFL.

    Typical rookie hype.

  8. hobartbaker says: Aug 23, 2011 2:36 PM

The film of Pryor running is mind boggling. He looks like he is increasing his walking speed a bit to catch the light before it changes. Then, BOOM, 4.36 40.

  9. FinFan68 says: Aug 23, 2011 2:38 PM

Imagine the free tats he will be able to get now…

  10. niner89 says: Aug 23, 2011 2:46 PM

Why is everyone who comments on here thinks they’re a comedian? Every other comment is some sort of lame attempt to be funny.

  11. hobartbaker says: Aug 23, 2011 2:47 PM

No one is calling Pryor “The Savior” in Oakland, but after he was drafted witnesses described The Black Hole turning into A Softly Glowing Gentle Rift.

  12. yzguy431 says: Aug 23, 2011 2:50 PM

    going to classes? child, please.

  13. cincycoltsfan says: Aug 23, 2011 2:53 PM

Why the heck isn’t Tressel keeping a low profile? That dude ought to be ashamed of himself. I guess he’s bucking for an NFL job.

  14. goinalldeway says: Aug 23, 2011 2:53 PM

@unbiased8383. Thank you. That is a very interesting perspective. If I was Tressel and realized that this kid is the reason he got fired, sticking with him shows that he must be a good kid. Thank you for the comment. That is something i hadn’t realized.

Much like Reggie Bush and Pete Carroll I presume?

You haters can hate all you want on the Uncle Al and the Raider Nation, but I’m extremely happy for them on making this move to get Pryor.. Hue Jackson help develop Joe Flacco when we was drafted and he is turning out to be a pretty darn good Qb. TP has time to really learn the game under the tutelage of Hue which will serve him well.

  17. tsimpson50 says: Aug 23, 2011 2:59 PM

Agree with Tressel on this one. The guy can take down an Elite football program and solid head coach by his actions(and then be b@llsy enough to drive to the NCAA investigation in a new albiet used 350Z). He shouldn’t have any problem getting out of J Russell’s shadow with the Raiders.

Why are u speaking for others? If that is how u are then so be it but don’t assume everyone who is a rookie leaving college will continue to behave the same way after they leave…

  19. seneca1ss says: Aug 23, 2011 3:07 PM

That’s what they said about O.J.

  20. Land Snark says: Aug 23, 2011 3:15 PM

    T. P. Quite the appropriate moniker for a player with a checkered past.

  21. jackfnburton says: Aug 23, 2011 3:17 PM

Is it really that much harder to type “you” than just “u”? It’s just two more letters. I mean, there’s lazy, and there’s lazy, and then there’s THAT. I mean, you can finish the words “assume” and “college” but not “you”?

  22. r8rh8r says: Aug 23, 2011 3:21 PM

This cat was bleeding “SILVER AND WHACK” before he even knew what football was. Helluva pick up there Al.

It’ll be scarier to see what Tressel did to OSU…scary for OSU that is.

  24. aldaviz says: Aug 23, 2011 3:31 PM

Jim Tressel did not get fired because of Terrelle Pryor. Jim Tressel got fired because he ran, like most college programs, an illegal operation according to the NCAA rules. TP did nothing criminal in comparisons to alot of real crimes made by some of his NFL bretheren. Free tattoo’s for sports memorabila??? C’mon, let’s be real. I know more than half you knit wits on here bashing this man has done far worse in your crummy lives than that. BUT, it’s always easier to judge the next man than to face your own indictments. Oh yeah, and ENOUGH with the J. Russell comparisons. The ONLY thing they have in common is being a Black QB for the Raiders. For all those that forgot, this guy is still a young dude with alot to learn and grown into as most 21yr olds. Givem a chance to throw an NFL pass before hating on him….

Wow … all this hype about Newton and Pryor has me confused … who should I bet on winning the Super Bowl this year … the Raiders or Panthers.

Uh…no, I don’t expect every rookie leaving college to continue to go to classes and do schoolwork. I was merely pointing out that all rookies don’t have the distractions of being in college when they enter the NFL so that isn’t going to distinguish Pryor from any other rookie. I do think that there are other distractions, however, that might cause a rookie to focus on something other than football 24/7. Sorry to upset you.

  27. hendeeze says: Aug 23, 2011 3:59 PM

Like get you fired scared? Oh wait hes in Oakland anyways, the only one doing the firing is Al

  28. skyleralan says: Aug 23, 2011 4:07 PM

People need to realize that when they say the Raiders don’t have a 2nd, 3rd, or 4th round pick that Raiders will be getting two picks after the season for losing Asomugha, Miller, and Gallery.

  29. richc111 says: Aug 23, 2011 4:49 PM

Maybe Tressel wants to get a job with the Raiders!

  30. souldogdave says: Aug 23, 2011 5:05 PM

The Raiders will get compensation picks for Nnamdi,Gallery, and Miller. Pryor’s malfeasance has been blown totally out of proportion. Goodell’s suspension is ludicrous , and completely unfair. All I can say to that is Pete Carroll. The Raiders won’t have a second round pick next year, but the rest should be in place with the new picks. At least a 3rd rounder for losing Nnamdi.Remember, Gallery was a high-paid 1st rounder also.We need to get healthy, quit getting nicks.Work the kid in, should be good.He is gonna be way better than Tebow!!Instead of book tours and modeling undies, the kid will get to work with good teachers.Pretty sure they’ll have a “big brother” looking out for him.Go Raiders.

  31. packerfantastic says: Aug 23, 2011 6:08 PM

Yeah, Jim Tressel. Now there’s a guy with credibility.

  32. granadafan says: Aug 23, 2011 6:48 PM

So what if he runs in a straight line fast? He’s a QB, not a WR who doesn’t have to run routes. The best QBs in the league aren’t fast with the exception of Aaron Rodgers.

People (and Al Davis) should stop focusing on workout wonder numbers and look at tape to see if he can play or the type of system he was in. Are the flashy numbers due to a gimmick offense (Tebow)? Was the QB surrounded by superior talent and the WRs always open? Did he have to make any meaningful reads or were they just open? Did he operate from out of the center? Nah, none of that matters as long as he can run fast…… in a straight line.

You have to consider the type of offense he’s going to be in. Jackson knows he doesn’t have Manning, Brady, or Rivers under center. He has Campbell. As a play-action, roll-out, bootleg QB, Pryor’s speed would matter.
