Yeah, the Jets are giddy about Plaxico Burress

Rex Ryan, Plaxico Burress AP

The preseason doesn’t tell us a lot, but it can tell us if a player is ready to play again after a long layoff.

I wrote this on August 13 last year: “The explosive Michael Vick is back. … Vick showed the elusiveness that, well, eluded him last year.  He flashed his old talent  more on Friday night than all of last year combined.”

The response to the post was predictable: It’s only the preseason. Stop drinking the Kool Aid.  But it was obvious that Vick was ready to be a weapon again, even if we had no clue what kind of year he could have.

The 66-yard effort from Burress against the Bengals Sunday night was not as eye-opening as Vick’s performance a year ago, but it still told us a lot. It told us Burress can be a useful weapon, especially in the red zone.  It told us he can be a dangerous complementary receiver to Santonio Holmes.

Two years away from the game hasn’t seemed to sap Burress’ skills too much. The Jets moved him around, and even used Holmes in the slot to mix things up.

“You see we beat Cover-One and we beat Cover-Zero throwing the ball up to him,” Rex Ryan said after the game via the Newark Star-Ledger. “I don’t care who you are playing corner, you can be Willie Brown or Darrelle Revis out there, that’s going to be tough.”

More Ryan: “We were smiling from ear to ear. That’s why he’s here.”

Mark Sanchez on Burress: “I’ve never had a target like him.”

Burress said on Sunday that it felt like he never left the game.  On Monday: “This offense can really be special.”

Signing Burress was a calculated risk.  That’s why he wasn’t able to generate any big contract offers.  He still has to prove he can hold up over the course of the season, which is a big concern.

In the meantime, Burress should present a unique challenge as a No. 2 receiver, especially with tight end Dustin Keller and Derrick Mason running routes underneath.

As am I since I got him in the 14th round of my fantasy football draft. Team Name: Plaxidential Shooting.

  2. daburgher says: Aug 23, 2011 9:34 AM

Vick was good last year b/c teams didn’t gameplan for him.. he fell off towards the end of the season when teams figured him out.. same will happen with Plax.

  5. jbl429 says: Aug 23, 2011 9:38 AM

I think you mean Plaxico, not Portis.

I don’t know what’s I hate more about preseason… people getting hyped in meaningless games or unnecessary injuries in meaningless games.

    I still wanted Braylon back.

  9. ny82jy says: Aug 23, 2011 9:44 AM

I was giddy to watching. He looked way better than i expected. The best part is its only his first game. Once he has more time to practice and stuff he should only get better. Where are all you Sanchez haters huh? Did you see some of the throws he made including the td pass to burress with the defender in his face. Sanchez is gonna be solid this year you can see it. Cant wait for preaeason to be over!!

————————————————————The difference here is, if you make the perfect game plan to take a QB out of the game, then you pretty much take their whole offense out. If you only take Plax out of the game, well then you still have Holmes, Mason, Keller, and LT to worry about.

When aren’t the Jets “giddy” about any player on their roster, be it a starter to the 53rd man?

Lots of talk as we’ve come to expect from the Jets camp. The truth will be revealed over the long haul that starts September 11th.

  17. bullcharger says: Aug 23, 2011 9:52 AM

They make him sound like Randy Moss in his prime. He’s just a decent tall receiver and he isn’t very scary.

He had a good game against the Patriots in the Superbowl, but even then, the Giants coudn’t exactly take over the game. They only scored 17.

At the height of Burress’ powers he had Hines Ward on the other side and he was still stoppable.

Now he’s over the hill. He’ll make some plays but he’s won’t be a game changer.

The Jets are all excited about how he played against the Bungles??? They are the worst team in the league by a large margin.

  18. cakemixa says: Aug 23, 2011 9:54 AM

Holy crap, move over Jerry Rice! Plaxico caught a TD pass in a preseason game against the Bengals! Time to “be giddy”!

  19. rpiotr01 says: Aug 23, 2011 9:58 AM

I suppose if mediocre Eli Manning won a super bowl by throwing jump balls to Plaxico, mediocre Mark Sanchez can do the same. Sickening thought.

  21. stonyhands says: Aug 23, 2011 10:07 AM

Yeah it was impressive, if you consider toasting 2nd and 3rd string players on a horrible Bengals team. We are talking about guys who couldn’t make 31 other teams practice squads for Pete’s sake. Not to mention Plaxico’s nice pushoff to create separation from this scrub CB. Don’t believe me, watch for yourself. The Jets 1st string line had a hard time with the Bengals pass rush and that in itself is pretty darn sad.

  22. j0esixpack says: Aug 23, 2011 10:18 AM

I’d be giddy too if a WR on my team beat a a player of the caliber of Bengals Cornerback Fred Bennett like Burress did!

    Oh – no wait. No I wouldn’t.

  25. robinyount19 says: Aug 23, 2011 10:28 AM

I can’t believe the praise being piled on this guy. It wasn’t a “great diving catch”, he FELL and managed to hang on to the ball, while going against a backup DB on the Bengals. He was on the decline in ’08, period.

  26. urworstnitemare58 says: Aug 23, 2011 10:30 AM

The guys afraid of getting hit. You Jets fans will see that. He will let balls fall to the ground or get intercepted if he thinks he is going to get leveled.
Someone should teach him how to wear a hat also.

  27. ny82jy says: Aug 23, 2011 10:34 AM

Yes it was against the bengals and they are nothing special. But we are talking about a guy who didnt play in a NFL game for 1,000 days. This is the same guy that everyone has been saying for the last few weeks is old and out of shape and isnt going to contribute to the team. To me that was a impressive first start for him, i dont care what team it was against. You can tell by watching he still has it. He is a huge target and the perfect compliment to Holmes on the other side. Hes only gonna get better with more practice, he only had 3 practices before that game. Keep hating as always people. Cant wait to see Plax burn the Pats AGAIN.

  28. mike83ri says: Aug 23, 2011 10:35 AM

That was a gimme TD. It was a fade to the outside against 1 on 1 coverage because the Bengals blitzed everyone. Burress had position, and the fact he had to dive to make the catch was a joke.

  29. goldenstatus says: Aug 23, 2011 10:38 AM

@daburgher Yeah, That’s why Michael Vick had over 700 total yards and 6 total touchdowns the final two games he played last season right? No team we played even tried to gameplan for Vick all year even though these are professional coaches, players, etc. being paid to stop people like Michael Vick huh? At the very end of the season when coaches had all the tape in the world, he LEAD one of the greatest comebacks in nfl history right? He’s been in the league what 8 total seasons now? Which YES, equals 8 years. Yeah, keep talking. I can go on all day.

  30. themage78 says: Aug 23, 2011 10:40 AM

He was slow as hell. Maybe after he plays a good team will we see how elite he still is.

  32. brutus9448 says: Aug 23, 2011 10:49 AM

I don’t know why the NFL is wasting a whole season. Just give the superbowl trophy to the Jets already. In their mind they are already champions.

  33. brutus9448 says: Aug 23, 2011 10:50 AM

did you see the catch edwards had in the 9ners game? that was much prettier than the buress touchdown.

  34. ampats says: Aug 23, 2011 10:52 AM

I was in NY this weekend and watched the jets game on CBS2. Let me begin by saying, I have never seen such a homer broadcasting team with the ex-jet Greg Buttle. You would think the jets came off a SB win and had Chris Johnson & Larry Fitz on the team the way they painted the offense.

The jets should have put away the Bengals in the 1 st quarter the Bengals could be the worst team in the NFL(they look sorry & dalton is not ready to start ). I think the jets still have shown problems in the red zone and I question their lack of depth after the 1st string. I also believe Rex is putting alot of faith in unproven young players like Wilkerson.

DuCasse looks awful ! As a 2nd round pick he should be starting by now in one postion (depth ??)

I believe the jets could still be a playoff team but there is no way they are a better team than lasy season.

ny82jy, I also can’t wait till Plexiglass comes to New England week#5 also and when Taco meets our new Defense

    1. LOL @ “teams not gameplanning for vick” cause that makes a lot of sense. well just decide not to plan how to stop the opposition’s QB. WOW, are you dumb.

    2. Why is everyone mad that the Jets front office found a nice weapon for mark and the boys. you all said it was a dumb signing when it happened, and yea, its only a preseason game, but if thats a preview of what is to come in the regular season, then this has tons of meaning. another case of your team not making a move, our team making the move, and so far, looks like it works out for us. kind of reminds me of LT last year in the preseason. hopefuly plax could keep it up for the full 16+ games this year, though

  37. rectumnearlykilledem says: Aug 23, 2011 10:57 AM

Its funny, all the time Plaxico was a NYG I rarely ever heard him praised as an elite receiver(except by Giants fans). In fact, most of the time he was painted as a problem for the NYG.

In 06′ he was ranked 3rd in receiving touchdowns, in 07′ he was ranked 4th in receiving TD’s and 12th in TD’s. In the 07′ NFC championship game against GB he had 11 rec for 154yards averaging 13 yards/rec.

Now, after catching 3 passes(1TD) against the Bengals (one of the most poorly run organizations in the league) in a preseason game to boot, this guy is supposed to be the 2nd coming of Jerry Rice. This is the same buffoon who blew a whole in his own leg while hanging out at a club in the middle of a practice week destroying any chance he team might have had to repeat at the SB.

I’m not saying that Jets fans shouldn’t be encouraged by his play so far, but you guys need to remember that this was only a preseason game and Plaxico Buress’ biggest enemy has always been Plaxico Buress. The talking heads on the Networks like to say that he has changed and learned his lesson, but from all the interviews that I have seen, he appears to be a lot less contrite then say M. Vick.

Rex Ryan has been predicting a SB run since he was named head couch. Bottom line Jets fans: Don’t count your Lombardi trophies before they are won.
