Bears tell Roy Williams he may lose starting job

Chicago Bears Training Camp Getty Images

It turns out that media and fans aren’t the only ones in Chicago starting to grumble about Roy Williams.

Bears receiver coach Darryl Drake sent a loud message to Williams on Wednesday.

“[He’s not where he needs to be, and he knows that,” Drake said via the Chicago Sun-Times. “He and I have talked about that. And the good thing about it is, you got Johnny Knox who is fighting and working hard.

“And believe you and me, [Williams] also understands that Johnny is there, and Johnny is hungry, and Johnny wants his spot back. And if things don’t start changing, then Johnny is going to be in there. Heard it straight from the horse’s mouth.”

Those are fighting words.  Knox by all accounts has enjoyed a strong camp.  Talent rises in the NFL, and it’s hard to imagine Knox staying out of the starting lineup throughout the season.

Heck, it sounds like Knox could be there by Week One the way Williams is going.

So does this mean Roy has to carry Johnny Knox’s pads now?

…Is there a reason Knox and Williams can’t both start?

Will the WR’s who carry his pads lose their jobs also?

  5. jacksaysfu says: Aug 24, 2011 6:04 PM

He’s now been relegated to carrying that rookies pads. Karma is great

Roy will being trying to make a squad in the UFL by this time next year

  8. capslockkey says: Aug 24, 2011 6:06 PM

I don’t understand why they would have just handed him the starting job in the first place.

  9. woodg8 says: Aug 24, 2011 6:06 PM

    Good

The Bears staff said Knox never earned his job last year… well tell me, how on earth has Roy earned it?

Knox deserves to be the starter

If anything, Hester was worse than Roy on MNF. Fell over for one easy TD and dropped another TD pass

  10. ninersrule says: Aug 24, 2011 6:09 PM

The dude is a bum! I can’t believe they were just going to hand him a starting position in the first place. He’s a slot guy at best

  11. realitypolice says: Aug 24, 2011 6:09 PM

What the hell happened to this guy?

I remember watching him in his first or second year (can’t remember which) playing for Detroit. It was a game, I think against Philly (?), where they were wearing their throw backs.

And he was simply a beast. Catching everything that was even close to him and just blowing up defenders trying to tackle him. I distinctly remember him literally just grabbing someone attempting to tackle him and throwing them out of the way.

How does THAT guy become THIS guy so quickly?

  12. Awol.West says: Aug 24, 2011 6:10 PM

Speed WR or possession WR, both will be product of the Mike Martz system.
Cutler needs a big target, why not bench Hester the special teams player?
Regardless, they need the o-line to keep Cutler upright, and even get the ball to these WRs.

Ehh, check out this Tim Tebow blog entry.

This guy has been a total turd since he left Detroit, (The trade that Mayhew made to Jerry in Dallas proves Detroit is on the rise)!!!

  14. mvp43 says: Aug 24, 2011 6:12 PM

I hope he didn’t mail out too many of those engagement rings……….sounds like he’s headed out of town.

  15. cooper417 says: Aug 24, 2011 6:13 PM

Knox is in year 3, not a rookie. And this story doesn’t surprise me, Roy E. has been average at best for years now.

  16. nycoccet says: Aug 24, 2011 6:14 PM

This helps anyone who drafted Roy in their fantasy bc now you.can drop him and add Knox and actually get some points out of that slot. I thought the Cowboys made the worst trade in history in the Williams trade, and he lost his slot to I believe an undrafted rookie. He was younger, and in better shape and that didn’t light a fire for Williams so doubt him being told he’s going to lose his job will have any affect whatsoever.

  17. collegeref says: Aug 24, 2011 6:16 PM

He may have been dissing Rice with the running uphill thing but Walter Payton invented it in Chicago. Dumbest thing ever saying ‘you need to play football’ to get into football shape.

You need football PRACTICE to get into football shape. You know, running, running, and more running. Playing soccer or hoops would be better served.

    This guy is a mope.

It should tell you something that the Bears leading receiver from last year got bumped out of his position by a guy who was labeled a bust.

When you’re replacing what is considered to be your best WR with another WR labeled a complete bust it says something about the other WR’s on the Bears.

Guess what Jay, they traded away your good TE too buddy! You give a guy crap, he’ll make a crap sandwich.

    There are your 2011 Bears

  24. FinFan68 says: Aug 24, 2011 6:23 PM

Maybe they should have told him that the best receivers will get the starts instead of proclaiming him the starter. Williams has been an underachiever but the staff named him the starter.

  25. staff2cj4td says: Aug 24, 2011 6:25 PM

Noooooooooooooooooooo!!!! PLEASE Chicago, wait, let us play him week 5 on MNF!!

    Signed, EVERY Lions fan!!!

  26. tiffpats4eva says: Aug 24, 2011 6:26 PM

He should be laid off in this economy.

  27. jsrdc says: Aug 24, 2011 6:28 PM

WHAT? Are you kidding me? Williams not starting for the team who was his savior after being cut, with the almighty Mike Martz? I called this from the day he got cut – that he would still be mediocre – and it is coming to fruition. Knox is faster, has better hands, and can also return kicks.

    @ collegeref,

It SHOULD count as a smart move for JJ, but it won’t be mentioned at all, because only the negatives get mentioned for Jerry. You will always continue to hear how Roy was one of the worst FA signings of all time (and he was), but you won’t hear those same people giving credit to JJ for cutting him. It was time for him to go, and anybody who thought Roy would magically liven up just because he was on a new team should have known better. Roy is an underachiever, and has been ever since he left Detroit for the huge contract.

Mediocre will continue to be Roy’s M.O. He just doesn’t have greatness in him.

  28. swive says: Aug 24, 2011 6:28 PM

Redumping Ol’ Roy? No, it only would have counted as a dumb move for Jerry if he didn’t do it. This guy was fabulous, now he’s not. Give him a lot of money, he loses his drive. Sad. Very sad. The Bears made a mess of bringing him in too, and look at the reward they get for that…

  29. flagstaffphotos says: Aug 24, 2011 6:30 PM

Chicago – where they still only have one starting “split end” on the field at a time. Must be running David Nelson’s famous Delaware Wing-T formation from 1951.

Very MODERN Chicago!! Must be that Mike Martz “greatest show on turf” influence?

  30. achap39 says: Aug 24, 2011 6:32 PM

Roy Williams, Devin Hester, Johnny Knox, Earl Bennett…Something tells me no one’s going to be scheming against the Bears’ WR corps this year.

  33. patsandsox says: Aug 24, 2011 6:36 PM

Is he just a lazy slob or what? Shows up completely out of shape. Sounds like what everyone says about Albert Haynesworth in DC, without all the off the field BS.

Some of these guys get paid and dont care any more

  34. jackfnburton says: Aug 24, 2011 6:40 PM

So let’s see. Roy Williams, upon getting a fat new contract in 2008, suddenly turned into a lazy bum. That was magically going to change in Chicago? Not winning, Bears. Not winning.

  35. teal379 says: Aug 24, 2011 6:41 PM

He should just lose his job – period. Starter, back-up or practice squad – dude’s garbage.

  36. sullijo1 says: Aug 24, 2011 6:48 PM

    Forget Williams/ Knox.

I really think losing Olsen at TE is going to hurt Cutler this year – and he doesn’t have a lot of margin for error.

Olsen was very solid with over 100 catches, 1000 yards, and 13 TDs the last 2 years. That’s some good productivity to replace with some unproven guys.

    =================

Roy Williams wasn’t an FA signing for Dallas. JJ traded a whole bunch of picks for him. I can’t remember exactly what off-hand, but a first and third were definitely part of the package and I think a sixth and seventh were included also. After trading for him, JJ signed him to a huge contract extension even though he only had something like 250 yards through 5 games and getting benched by the Lions that season.

Weres the logic in that ???? just cause he has connections to Darryl drake and mike martz… C’mon MAN !!!! I’ll take my chances with rookie sanzenbacher he at least has A catch this preseason

  40. nycoccet says: Aug 24, 2011 7:06 PM

Jerry jones made the worst trade ever to get Roy Williams, I’m sure it wasn’t all him, he prob had help.from coach, gm etc. Sometimes trying to.hard backfires. I’m Eagles fan and can’t stand Cowboys but respect the fact he takes chances. Roy Williams was a terrible chance and may have crippled their draft but rather have that happen then not try like Bengals owner whos team is like 40mil under cap and the cap was reduced by 7 mil this.year

  41. bearsrulepackdrool says: Aug 24, 2011 7:09 PM

Are people just oblivious to Devin Hester? People seem to act like he’s the greatest WR in the history of the game the way people talk about Williams and Knox fighting to start next to him.

The man just disappears during games and he makes one or two highlight catches and no one seems to recognize the fact that HE SUCKS! Start Williams #2 and Knox #1 and Hester in the slot where he belongs.

Angelo is holding the Bears back. How many years has he been at the helm and how have they done? He needs to go, along with Ted Phillips, Lovie and the whole inept crew. The Bears front office has to form a committee just to grow grass! That should tell you something. Jim Finks/Jerry Vanisi where are you???

  57. bearfan51 says: Aug 24, 2011 8:21 PM

Great… Johnny “I can’t run a slant pattern or fight for a jump ball” Knox.

It is easy to pick out the people that WATCH the games vs. people that look at stats. Johnny Knox is overrated just like Greg Olsen was. Sure Knox is fast as hell… But after gaining 10 lbs in the off season he looked slower to me… He never crosses the face of a defender and then a quick slant becomes a quick INT.

Charles Woodson is just glad D.A. is in Minny now. Considering D.A. owned Woodson every time they were matched up. Last time Woodson had to cover him what did he give up??? Something like 11 catches for 100 yards and a back shoulder TD that made Woodson look like he never played ball before.

  58. philthewise says: Aug 24, 2011 8:41 PM

How on earth can the Bears pick up a guy as a FA that another team let walk out the door–because he was such a disappointment–then name him your starter?! After the lockout and no off season workouts or mini camps. Oh that’s right, this is the team that traded a high first round draft pick to Seattle for their qb (Rick Meirer) that they couldn’t wait to get rid of, then made him the starter.

That draft pick the Bears traded for Meirer was used to pick Walter Jones, who will probably be a A HALL OF FAMER AT LT. Bears, they never learn.

If he flops then they cut him so it was worth the risk but I have no idea as to why they penciled him in as the starter.
    Well… actually I do.
Jerry Angelo wanted it and Lovie does as he is told.

When is this dude going to get it? This happens every season with him…he’s on his 3rd team since ’04,for one thing. For another,he shows up out of shape, and come game time he makes maybe 1 or 2 decent catches,if that. Why do people keep giving him big contracts? He belongs maybe on a practice squad somewhere, unless the light finally goes on and he puts the necessary work in… He’s going to find himself out of football altogether…

  64. lionsfanatic84 says: Aug 24, 2011 9:42 PM

love having “First Down Roy” back in the NFC North. Love it even more that he won’t be dropping passes as a Lion.
The signing of Roy and promoting him to #1 has typical stubborn Mike Martz written all over it. The same Mike Martz who viewed 5’10” Shaun Macdonald as a deep threat with the Lions, because of his experience in the system, even tho we had Roy AND Calvin Johnson!! In retrospect MacDonald may have been a better deep threat than Roy! So what does that say about his confidence in the receivers now? (Shaun MacDonald standing by his phone waiting to be a starter as I’m typing this, lol) And don’t get me started on his unwillingness to run the ball (Detroit, even tho we didn’t really have a running game, San Fran:Frank Gore), or draft QB’s high (Drew Stanton 2nd round), change his mechanics, then shelf him for the season, so he can cater to his arena league project (JT O’Sullivan) who has never went anywhere in the league unless Martz was his coordinator, and he still didn’t go anywhere!!
So as much as I despise our NFC North opponents, I have sympathy for you Bear’s fans…At least you know that your Top 10 pick next year should unseat one of your washed up vets…. unless your front office remains intact

  65. lionsfanatic84 says: Aug 24, 2011 9:47 PM

Answer: It was his third year, Calvin’s rookie year, The Eagles scored 50+ points that game. Calvin made the most amazing catch and landed on his back and got injured, Kitna got INT’ed 4 times, 3 on passes to Williams, Yet Kitna and Williams had career days because our only option was to throw the ball to keep up!

Roy’s going to be joining Charles Rogers face down and passed out in a taco bar in Farmington unless he gets his act together.

The issue was and is in Roy’s head. He has to decide that he wants to be a star in the NFL, and so far he’s playing in Chicago like he doesn’t want to stay employed. My advice is that the Bears should call in Dr. Phil!

I’d like to see Roy come back to Detroit if it means we can trade him to Jerry Jones again!
