Brian Williams to join the Giants

The New York Giants are adding some badly needed depth at cornerback.

Mike Garafolo of the Star-Ledger reports that the Giants will sign veteran Brian Williams.

Williams was the best of a bunch of cornerbacks who tried out for the Giants today. Other veterans the Giants kicked the tires on included former Eagles cornerback Lito Sheppard and former Lions cornerback Dre Bly.

Giants coach Tom Coughlin said he thinks Williams can step in and contribute immediately.

Well, he’s a veteran, he knows how to play,” Coughlin said. “He’s been a good, physical blitzer. And we’re in need of someone that can learn some things real quick.”

The Giants were desperate for cornerback help after losing Terrell Thomas and Brian Witherspoon for the season on Monday night, having previously lost Bruce Johnson for the season and Prince Amukamara for at least the first month of the season.

The 32-year-old Williams played in all 16 games for the Falcons last year, starting one.

Not bad at all. It was a very neccessary move at this point, and he’s been real durable throughout his career.

Why didn’t they call up Sam Madison and RW McQuarters while they were at it?

Good move by the Giants. Williams was very good when he played for the Jaguars as well.

Nice signing – probably the best of the remaining DB’s out there.

The Giants will be hurting in the secondary for at least the first half of the season. Players on all teams will continue to get acclimated to the playing condition they need to be in, and learning the playbook for the younger guys who missed out on all that time due to that crazy lockout.

When you have guys dropping like flies much like the Giants have, it is difficult to be confident about that makeshift secondary.

This must suck for giants fans. We went through the same thing with our CBs last year with the Eagles. Even Asante missed 5 games or so and the RCB seemed like it was someone new every Sunday. I heard someone throw out Eagles CB Joselio Hansens name as a trade option for the giants. He’s a pretty solid nickelback. Not too tall, but very quick and a surprisingly aggressive tackler for his size. (5’9 I believe)

no way the Eagles trade Hanson to the Giants.

I still say they should call up Kelvin Hayden

Aside from the Eagles, we don’t exactly play any offensive juggernauts through the end of October… Arizona’s the next best offensive team we face ’til November. Not worried.

Wow…you guys are gonna let him take time off from his News anchor job to play football?

Roster cuts are coming soon as teams must cut their rosters by next Tuesday and then again to 53 5 days later, I believe. Most teams are sitting at around 90 players or so right now, so that’s about 1200 players becoming available in the next 10 days. There will be more CBs to choose from, and maybe one or two that look good to the Giants.

Williams is terrible in coverage for any of you who’ve watched falcons games…I guess we had to but don’t expect much.

JANVANFLAC, No way the Eagles trade Joselio???? OK? Im not saying it WILL happen, but you make it sound as if the Eagles would never consider trading away their 4th best CB. The Eagles even said that they werent opposed to considering trading Asante if the price was right. What makes you think Joselio’s job is a lock?

    Not worried.

Not a bad signing. Hayden is still out there and I’m sure someone else will be next week also. We just need bodies, not stars. Once Prince comes back, we can work him in as nickel and depending on how quickly he adjusts, he can assume the starting role.

With the statements that Giants management has made about “Not overspending” and “Responsible offers”, I am wondering if this guy actually outshined the competition that they brought is or was the cheapest option.

He didn’t play much last yeah, but when he did, this guy had 22 passes thrown his way with 18 completions!!!!

Yeah, this guy will solve all the Giants problems.

However, if he does work out for them, the coaching staff will then try him out as a punt returner. That will reallly test out the ACL he had in 2009.
