Jason Campbell says he’ll “deal with” arrival of Terrelle Pryor

Jason Campbell AP

Raiders quarterback Jason Campbell, who took a knee to the head on Saturday night against the 49ers, returned to practice on Tuesday.

Just in time to be asked questions about the team’s newest quarterback.

It’s just something that I deal with,” Campbell told reporters regarding the addition of Terrelle Pryor, via Jerry McDonald of BayAreaNewsGroup.com.  “It’s business.  You don’t know what we’re going to do with him yet.  He’s definitely a big, fast guy.  There are different things we can do with him.  He’s a teammate now.  We welcome him.

“People forget, I’m a young guy, too,” said Campbell, 29.  “So I’m trying to go out and get things right for this team and be the future of this team.”

For now, Pryor isn’t a member of the team, yet.  We reported on Tuesday that the ball is in the Raiders’ court regarding Pryor’s contract.  And the Raiders seem to be in no hurry to get it done.

“He’ll be here soon.  I’m sure he’ll be here,” Raiders coach Hue Jackson said Tuesday.  “Hopefully, before the end of the week, we’ll have him here and ready to go.”

Frankly, Pryor should have been there before the end of the day on Monday.

Glad to hear Campbell isn’t bothered by this at all, I still think the Raiders got him to be a “multi-threat” player not necessarily the future of the franchise

    Yeah, he’ll deal with it…

    Tonya Harding style.

You mean he will look at the mirror and see himself?

Sure he’ll deal with it just like a raiders fan…look out he has a gun!

    Frankly my dear, I don’t give a damn ;)

None issue, Campbell is the starting QB 2011 hands down. Boller and Edwards haven’t shown anything to make a threat and Pryor is way too green.
Raiders should take their time with Pryor and if he can possibly contribute as a wild cat QB later this season, it’ll be a bonus. Just don’t want him starting anytime in 2011.

“Should have been there before end of day Monday.”

Are you crazy? He was supposed to buy an airplane ticket to the city whose team drafted him an hour after the draft? And move to Oakland with 2 hours notice?

I understand with the shortened offseason and him potentially playing QB that time is of the essence. But as a Raiders fan, I’m happy for him to celebrate with family and make arrangements to meet the team by the end of the week.

No biggie. Campbell is in a contract year. He realizes he’s probably looking at his eventual replacement if he doesn’t win.

  9. cup1981 says: Aug 24, 2011 5:54 AM

I don’t think Prior is much of a threat to anyone as a QB. He’s simply NOT a good QB. Athleticism as a QB does not translate into being an NFL-caliber QB, unless he’s willing to work his ass off.

  10. edmazeing1 says: Aug 24, 2011 6:28 AM

Raiders needed a QB that can run for years now, the OLine really gives no time to even get off a screen pass, so with Pryor I see him passing Vick & Randell record for yards!!!

My guess is that once Pryor’s team fiqures out that the Raiders will not accept a contract that guarantees that the team will only use him as a QB, he’ll get his plane ticket to Alameda.

The Steelers, Pats, Chiefs, Redskins, Saints, Bucs, Cowboys, Chargers, Browns, Lions, Eagles, Raiders, Dolphins, Bills, 49ers, and Bengals were all there at the draft and wanted Pryor.

The Raiders got him, deal with it.

raiders shouldnt even make the news. they are the most sorry franchise in sports today. all they are good for is an example of how NOT to run your team

  15. Chairman Al says: Aug 24, 2011 7:33 AM

Here’s why Campbell isn’t worried: It’s his job to lose. If he does well this year, he’ll stay. Its all in his hands.

Yes, because 5th WRs don’t grow on trees – so all those teams are outta luck!!!

he isnt worried and shouldnt be. i think Campbell will stay for a year or 2 THEN Pryor takes over. they may sign him to a 1 or 2 year extension. Pryor is the future in Oakland, but the future isnt ready, give him a year and i think he will be fighting for a job.

You’re right.. they all wanted him. But none of them were stupid enough to give up a 3rd rounder. They all wanted him, on their terms.
If they all WANTED him that badly, they could have easily gave up a top pick as well, those other teams knew better.

Hey.. how’s Heyward-Bey working out for you??

  21. rymag9 says: Aug 24, 2011 9:31 AM

Although im a redskins fan, and Know that Campbell Sucks, he doesn’t have anything to worry about. Now the person who ought to be shaking in his Raider Cleats, is Heyword-Bey. Or however you spell that Bust of a WRs name.

  22. whynotusecommonsense says: Aug 24, 2011 9:34 AM

Campbell will have to prove to me he isn’t worried by his play on the field.

The issue to me is that he really struggled with Gradkowski behind him last year. Cable and a lot of Raider fans were enamoured with Gradkowski for some reason and this made Campbell uncomfortable. Once Gradkowski got hurt and he wasn’t looking over his shoulder, he improved. He’s got to be mentally tough enough to deal with this draft choice.

I hope his actions back up his words.

  23. skinsfandcdan83 says: Aug 24, 2011 9:46 AM

I like Jason Campbell but he’s just not mentally tough enough to be a starting QB in the NFL..

  24. vtsquirm says: Aug 24, 2011 10:10 AM

Campbell is such as low decision maker, he hasn’t made up his mind about how he feels with Pryor possibly taking his job.

  25. sieg1234 says: Aug 24, 2011 10:19 AM

Frankly, Pryor shouldn’t have been on ANY NFL team until next season.

I don’t even know why they are asking questions to Campbell in this nature, as if Pryor has any realistic chance of taking over for Campbell…not this year…not next year…not ever.

  26. managod777 says: Aug 24, 2011 10:42 AM

Pryor will not be a top flight NFL QB. They can’t let it happen. They must look like Manning, Brady, Brees, Rogers: white, intellectual, ability to move feet…That’s why Michael Vick has just been listed as the 90th best player in the NFL. Yeah…OK…

Campbell has nothing to worry about competition-wise at the QB position from Prior.

I guess you weren't at that game and are just going by your stereotypical violent raider hatred. If you were there, you'd know that it was almost all 49er on 49er violence or it was 4-5 49er fans jumping on one raider fan. One raider fan getting beaten close to death because he decided to wait for his girlfriend outside the bathroom. Not to mention, there were actually THREE shootings; the first one caught on youtube (but not reported in the news) was 49er on 49er (which immediately followed an all out 49er on 49er brawl between a bunch of 49er women fans) , and the second one after the game was by a 49er fan who shot a Raider fan in the face.

Aquaint yourself with the facts next time and quit playing up stereotypes.

Looking like a better receiver so far this preseason. He has made some nice catches so far. Do you watch football or just get spoonfed your opinion from internet blogs?

  31. marcsasharc says: Aug 24, 2011 9:24 PM

i just want to know why the same Raider fans who think Alex Smith sucks and that he will never be a winning QB are usually the same Raider fans who think Campbell is a viable QB….can someone explain that one?

id love to hear that argument.

    @ dealer009

Are you stupid? He was saying that Pryor should have been there before Monday (or by Monday, whatever) b/c he doesn’t believe the supplemental draft should have ever been postponed and that Pryor should have been let in immediately without question (which is stupid in it’s own right). Not that he should have just moved to Cali immediately b/c the Raiders took him, jeez.

    @ managod

Tell me, who are the best QB’s in the league? Are you REALLY trying to tell me that Vick is even remotely close to being as good as those guys? They don’t have to be white, but they have to know how to throw a football well, move within the pocket, and learn the playbook better than anyone else on the team. Which is what Brady, Manning, Brees, and Rodgers do…Vick had a great season, but faltered late in the season and in the playoffs, he is what he is, and it’s not great, it’s just exciting at times, confusing others. Warren Moon was a great QB b/c he did those things you just said, Randall Cunningham was good too, they were black. But they knew their playbook, they could make ALL the throws (and by that I mean with accuracy). Donovan McNabb was good too, never great, but good – he was held back by his self entitlement and his ability to throw the ball directly into the ground too much.

A black QB could be just as good as any white QB, if they would learn to do the right things. Some do, many don’t. They want to run constantly, they typically don’t throw the ball as well or with the same accuracy, it is what it is…it’s the same as white RB’s, people are STILL down on Peyton Hillis, why? B/c he’s white, yet for some reason they want to give love to Cedric Benson for being a “workhorse.” Yeah, he can carry it 30 times a game, for about 3 yards at a time. But Hillis will always be disrespected by his skin color and b/c it is true, most good/great RB’s are black. Just like most good/great QB’s are white. Doesn’t mean their can’t be exceptions.

This thread is weak. Where are all the Raiders Haters?! Disappointed. Hahaha

JC shouldn’t be worried about Pryor…yet.

Anyway, getting Pryor in the sup draft gives him a jumpstart on training for the 2012 season. Jackson and Saunders can teach him the ropes until then.
