Vikings offensive lineman Scott Kooistra, who was lost for the season with a serious neck injury in last week’s preseason game, had successful surgery on Tuesday.

Kooistra’s agent, Joe Linta, told Tom Pelissero of 1500ESPN.com that Kooistra is now recovering from surgery. It’s too early to say whether the 30-year-old Kooistra will ever be able to play football again.

Kooistra suffered the injury to his C-2 vertebra in a collision with Seahawks linebacker Aaron Curry and actually stayed on the field for three more plays before going to the sideline.

Although he’s been a backup for his entire career, Kooistra had played well in training camp, was in the starting lineup for the Seahawks game and had a good chance of being a starter for the Vikings in the regular season.
