The story is that they were concerned enough about Manning’s status a month ago to inquire about Hasselbeck, and when that didn’t happen, another month and a lot of practices went by before they finally inked Collins. For $4M.

There’s a few reasons why that might be, but frankly, none of them are very good for the Colts. The two main ones being that their concern about Manning suddenly spiked recently, or they grossly overestimated Painter and Orlovsky’s ability to hold down the fort — and are sufficiently desperate now to invest the money in a guy they probably could’ve lured off his couch a month ago with the same offer.

Collins is perfect. He’s been bashed so much over the years, he’s got no ego left. He can start, and maybe win a few games, then ride the pine drawing his money for a few more years. I don’t see the downside for him, and maybe not the Colts either.

The Colts should start thinking about drafting a young QB who Peyton can groom for a few years. I still see at least another 4-5 years from Manning though.
