Kentwan Balmer is heading to Carolina

A day after he was waived by the Seahawks, Kentwan Balmer has a new home.

The Panthers were awarded Balmer on waivers, Jason La Canfora of NFL Network reports.

Balmer, a defensive lineman out of North Carolina, was a first-round draft pick of the 49ers in 2008. But he never amounted to much in San Francisco and was traded to the Seahawks for a sixth-round pick in 2010.

Now the Panthers have him for free, and they can kick the tires on him for the next nine days before deciding whether to keep him on their 53-man roster. Given the way Balmer has played so far in his three-year NFL career, the chances are good that he won’t make the team. But Balmer is a talented athlete who’s still only 24 years old, and so it can’t hurt for the Panthers to take a look.
