Reggie Wayne calls Kerry Collins “a step back”

Joseph Addai, Reggie Wayne AP

As it turned out, Colts receiver Reggie Wayne’s recent “personal issue” was the birth of a child and not an effort to cause trouble for the team.  (Curiously, though, the team consistently has refused to disclose the nature of the “personal issue,” even after everyone knew what it was.)

Here’s an effort from Reggie Wayne to cause trouble for the team.

On the day that the Colts finally decided to “break glass in event of emergency” with the signing of quarterback Kerry Collins, Wayne was hardly welcoming of the team’s newest player.

“We don’t even know him, we ain’t vanilla, man, we ain’t no simple offense,” Wayne said, via the Associated Press. “So for him to can come in here and be the starter, I don’t see it. I think that’s a step back.

“Who says Kerry’s going to be the starter?” Wayne added.  “Just because we bring him in doesn’t mean he’s the starter.  He’s got to learn too, right?  Unless they gave him a playbook months ago, he’s got to learn to.

“I don’t care who you are, I mean I’m not going to let anyone just come in here and just push someone [like Curtis Painter] aside like you’re that dog now, you know what I mean?”

To borrow a line from Joe Pesci a/k/a Vincent LaGuardia Gambini, “I think.  I get.  The point.

Meanwhile, the presumed Peyton Manning replacement before Collins came along, tried to say all the right things.

“It was a business decision for them,” Curtis Painter said.  “It doesn’t change much from my thought process.  I need to go out there and be ready for any situation.”

One situation Painter needs to be ready for?  If Manning comes off the PUP list but if he isn’t ready to play Week One, it’s highly unlikely that the Colts would keep Manning, Collins, Painter, and Dan Orlovsky on the active roster.  Thus, chances are that Painter or Orlovsky will be gone.

Whether Reggie Wayne likes it or not.

Suck it up Reggie, most recievers go through this during there career. Your just lucky Peyton has been so healthy.

Maybe it’s because it was PERSONAL! Let it go. Maybe Wayne has asked the team not to talk about his private life. These guys have so little privacy maybe he wanted to have a moment with his new family member w/o any attention. PRIVACY. Not a hard concept.

I’m curious what he plans to do to stop it.

I’m surprised that Wayne could make such stupid comments. Where in the world did he get the idea that Collins would be the starter in place of Manning! What the team is saying is Painter and Orlvosky are both useless. Kerry Collins is certainly an upgrade over those two.

Doesn’t matter too much; the Colts defense is garbage. They are not winning the trophy with that D.

  6. axespray says: Aug 25, 2011 8:43 AM

According to Jamie Dukes, it doesn’t matter who lines up under center for the colts.

Cause It was Reggie Wayne and Marvin Harrison who carried Peyton through out his whole ALL PRO Career (smh)….

Meanwhile, Brian Hoyer/Ryan Mallet just lit up the Jaguars.

  7. fcs34 says: Aug 25, 2011 8:43 AM

Are you sure Reggie Wayne said this or his alter ego Capt Obvious ?

  8. boblavoie says: Aug 25, 2011 8:44 AM

Watch what you say Wayne, you might not get the ball. You are a veteran, act like one and be happy to get someone who can throw the ball.

  9. chobes68 says: Aug 25, 2011 8:45 AM

Exactly. if he was a receiver for the Bears, he would just be another guy in the league. I also read it that he’s standing up for Painter, and that he believes they would need to simplify the O to get Collins started out.

  10. nflsucker says: Aug 25, 2011 8:46 AM

They’re all a step back from Manning, so it’s not like he isn’t right.

I think this is PFT’s effort to cause a problem.

There are only about 2-3 other QB’s in existence that wouldn’t be a step back from Peyton Manning.

  14. richm2256 says: Aug 25, 2011 8:47 AM

Damn, Wayne blew the lid right off that thing!

While it’s nice that someone stood up for Painter, the truth is he can’t be very good or the Colts wouldn’t have pulled Collins out of the Old Folks home. Yeah, Collins may be a “quick learner”, but this wholw situation screams “Train Wreck!!!”

Shame on Manning for leaving the surgery so late, and shame on the Dolts for not reacting better to it. Painter is now smeared with the “good enough to only hold the clipboard” label, and from now on will be known as “that dog”.

Oh, and Reggie, the Colts offense isn’t all that complicated to learn. First down, pass, second down, pass, third down, run, fourth down, punt.

    Collins can handle THAT.

  16. Land Snark says: Aug 25, 2011 8:50 AM

What a way to roll out the red carpet and welcome him out of retirement.

It’s a pretty classless thing to say especially considering who has been throwing him the ball in preseason games.

  17. tombradyswig says: Aug 25, 2011 8:50 AM

  20. raider23mike says: Aug 25, 2011 8:53 AM

Without Peyton, Reggie knows he will only be average at best. Manning makes just about any WR look great.

Colts haven’t prepared for life after Manning.. They should learn a thing or 2 from the Broncos(Elway), Dolphins(Marino) or Cowboys(Aikman). Its not easy replacing a HOF Franchise QB so do as the Packers did with Favre and get that franchise QB of the future NOW!!!

Without Manning, the Colts are a 5-6 win team at best.

  23. Tribe&Browns&Cavs says: Aug 25, 2011 8:57 AM

Wayne shouldn’t have said it, but he’s right. Plugging Kerry Collins into Peyton Manning’s spot two weeks before the season is like… replacing your lead sled dog with an elderly, partitally blind hippotomus with athritus in three legs. (I don’t know anything about dog sleds, but it seems accurate.)

If Manning can’t go week one, Painter has to be the first option simply because he’s worked behind Manning and knows the system. Gotta give him a shot, he’s their best hope.

  24. doe22us says: Aug 25, 2011 9:01 AM

  25. riverhorsey says: Aug 25, 2011 9:03 AM

    pretty thoughtless comments.

I imagine it means Collins will be Painters back up which is a good move and it could mean they expect Manning to be out a lot longer than expected.

  26. homelanddefense says: Aug 25, 2011 9:17 AM

While I agree that the comments were S T U P I D. I dont agree that Manning has completely “made” Wayne and that he would be average anywhere else.

He is a very talented WR, and would have been very good with any decent QB.

  27. joetoronto says: Aug 25, 2011 9:18 AM

    No, seriously, have you?

  28. opie333 says: Aug 25, 2011 9:18 AM

  29. joelvis72 says: Aug 25, 2011 9:22 AM

  31. blackfoot11 says: Aug 25, 2011 9:29 AM

The offense isn’t plain and simple b/c Peyton Manning is the architect, O coordinator, and QB. Without Manning the wheels fall off of the offense because the other O coordinator on the sideline has to do some real work, and prepare the less talented backup QB’s on the fly to run the offense. The eggs have always been in one basket for the Colts.

  32. chizzle20 says: Aug 25, 2011 9:30 AM

  35. larryfinfan says: Aug 25, 2011 9:33 AM

Gee, let’s see, Wayne seems to think that Kerry Collins is a step back from Peyton Manning? Ummm, let’s see….Duh !!!

Is he a step back from Painter ?? Well, with a certain train of thought, yes. Collins is the better QB, no doubt, however what Wayne was probably saying is that it’ll be a step back because Painter is the guy they have been working with for at least the last month, a possibly longer than that…so from that perspective, yea it’s a step back. However in short order, Collins has to become a better option than Painter….

  36. myeaglescantwin says: Aug 25, 2011 9:36 AM

  39. sadskinsfan89 says: Aug 25, 2011 9:43 AM

Didn’t the colts call kerry? So why is reggie mad at kerry? He’s basically talking his way out of that new contract he wants. Some players should just run when they see microphones.

  40. tatum064 says: Aug 25, 2011 9:47 AM

So Curtis Painter is a “step forward”?

    Hysterical!!!

““Here’s an effort from Reggie Wayne to cause trouble for the team.”

No here’s an effort from PFT to cause trouble for that team. Tell me what he said that wasn’t true.”

How about the part where he said he wouldn’t “let” Collins push Painter aside?

He’s a wide receiver, not the GM, not the head coach, not the owner. It isn’t his call. He isn’t in a position to “let” or not “let” Collins do anything, unless he plans to stop running routes or to stop catching the ball when it’s thrown to him.

  42. jpolston90 says: Aug 25, 2011 9:49 AM

Well as a Colts fan I HAD all the respect in the world for Reggie, but after all of this contract complaining, all the demanding, and now these comments, my views have all changed. He obviously doesn’t pay attention to anything but his world considering Collins is 2nd behind Manning in all major QB stats but 1, in which he is still a top 5. Collins is no regular season Manning, but he is still a decent vet that can put up pro bowl numbers when his team isn’t injured and works well. Wayne apparently forgot he’s in a contract year. Collins signed a 2 year deal as insurance for Manning considering the severity of the injury. It’s going to come down to Mathis or Wayne next season for resigning and considering the depth in our WE corps, and the fact that Mathis is half of the best DE tandem in the league, Wayne may have just shot himself in the foot. There will be elite recievers in the draft every year, so repacing him isn’t an insane concept.

  43. nesuperfan says: Aug 25, 2011 9:50 AM

What an a-hole. You are used to having one of the two best QB’s in the league, so yes, anyone else is a step back. Did you have to say it?

Even Randy Moss didn’t throw Matt Cassel under the bus when Brady went out. That was also a bit of a step back.

That is one of THE most classless comments I have ever seen in pro sports.

  44. Nevis says: Aug 25, 2011 10:12 AM

Um, Reggie? Curtis Painter makes Brady Quinn look like Marino. Might be the worst backup in the league.

You better believe Collins will be the starter until Manning is healthy.

  45. rodericksilva says: Aug 25, 2011 10:13 AM

Wayne needs to shutup and do what he is paid to do which is catch. Let management handle their business. They’ve always done a good job of putting a competitive team on the field.

  49. holdthemayo123 says: Aug 25, 2011 10:34 AM

  51. indywilson40 says: Aug 25, 2011 10:46 AM

Reggie Wayne has always had blind faith in Curtis Painter. He needs to get his head out of his a$$ and realize that Painter sucks. But it really doesn’t matter who replaces Manning. If Matt Cassel or Charlie Batch replaced Manning, the Colts would go 4-12. That’s the simple truth.

  52. bdickey33 says: Aug 25, 2011 10:48 AM

How does Peyton Manning and the Colts organization somehow keep these receivers seeming classy their whole careers? I used to think Marvin Harrison was a relatively decent guy and Wayne too. How did I get into that mindset?

  53. thebigcaptain2011 says: Aug 25, 2011 10:51 AM

For the people who are ripping Mr. Wayne need to understand that all he’s trying to do is stand up for Mr. Painter. He’s simply saying Curtis Painter has been there for a year now and before even getting a chance to start ONE regular season game he is being benched. Even Jamarcus Russell got a chance to start a game to show he couldn’t play. Ease up on him folks….

  54. easyeddie says: Aug 25, 2011 10:54 AM

Peyton Manning MADE Wayne into the receiver he is. Painter absolutely blows as a QB.

  55. wizahdry says: Aug 25, 2011 11:01 AM

Call me crazy but when you bring a guy back from retirement and give him a fat pay day the intention is that he will start if needed. That would be a lot of money to be behind painter on the depth chart. To say going from Peyton Manning to just about any body is a step back is obvious.

I agree with Reggie. I am a Titans fan and everytime Kerry was in i was pulling my hair out. Sure people might say the Titans went 13-3 with him as a starter, but that was Schwartz’s D that was winning the games for them. Kerry had about 2500 yards and was not that great that year. The only thing he does is hold the ball for soooooo long then b*tch at his linemen when he goes down, and he throws a nice looking pass, that is not that accurate anymore. Let the young boys play and get some real experience.

I think Reggie meant that starting Collins would be a “step back” in the team’s preparation. The other QBs suck worse than Collins, but at least they are familiar with the playbook and the team.

Yeah it was stupid for Reggie to slam the guy who might be throwing him the ball. But Reggie has seen Collins play for the Titans and (understandably) thinks Kerry is nothing to get excited about. He should direct his angst toward the Colt management for not doing enough soon enough to prepare for the possibility that Peyton might not be able to play.

  76. dsims7 says: Aug 25, 2011 12:44 PM

I’m not a Reggie Wayne fan (Not a Colt Fan period!) but he is correct, the media just played on it! You have to remember, they not only run one of the most complex offensives in the league, Peyton is the only Quarterback in the league that calls his own plays at the line! This team moves fast and players are use to moving around on commands, Kerry (Like him, I did Penn State too) cannot do that!

  77. gs7101 says: Aug 25, 2011 12:47 PM

Wayne is correct and one would think the Colts could have done much better; Collins is a 39-year-old washed up quarterback. He was 2-11 (over 2 years) during his final starts in Tennessee. Collins’ ineffective play allowed Vince Young to regain the starting quarterback position. The Colts are in big trouble if they are expecting Collins to come in and play well in Manning’s absence!

    _____________________________________
This is at least the second time on this topic I have seen a similar comment. PM fanbois suck.

Yes….Reggie Wayne came out of NOWHERE from a top college as a first rounder (and I’ve read that PM actively campaigned for the Colts to draft him)…it’s AMAZING poor beleagured peytie poo who never has any talent to work with who wins by himself while the losses are all the rest of the team letting him down could make something out of him. Sheesh.
WHY is it so hard for so many Colts fans/PM fans to give credit to other players on the team for being good and blame to PM when he effs up???

Brady didn’t MAKE Moss good, Moss was GOOD all by himself (when he wanted to be but I digress). Brady does make some other guys better like Branch. Same goes for PM. I am sure that Collie and Garcon & guys like that are better for playing w/ him. But Wayne or Clark??? Nope.

By the way despite what Reggie says their offense is NOT complex. There’s not that many plays they run. Their offense is based on precision execution and overwhelming offensive talent. Collins should be fine with the playbook aspect. It’s the precision that will be tougher.

I like that Reggie has his teammate’s back so fiercely but the way he expressed this is not cool at all.

  80. trollaikman8 says: Aug 25, 2011 1:43 PM

If Collins was a “step above” Manning, he’d be the starter and Manning would be the backup.
