Cowboys’ Costa injures knee, Gurode still starting center

Just as it appeared that longtime Cowboys center Andre Gurode was could lose his job to second-year player Phil Costa, Costa suffered an injury that likely secured Gurode’s hold on the starting center position.

Costa suffered a sprained PCL and will be out 2-4 weeks, which means he could miss the first couple games of the regular season and will certainly be unable to practice until just before Week 1.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones had referred to Costa as the “surprise of camp,” and it appeared that he might not only beat out Gurode for the starting center position, but possibly cause the Cowboys to trade or release Gurode.

But now Gurode’s job is almost certainly safe, and Costa will spend some time rehabbing an injured knee that kept him from becoming a starter.
