Dolphins have best cornerbacks? Revis begs to differ

2011 AFC Championship: New York Jets v Pittsburgh Steelers Getty Images

We noted this morning that Miami’s Vontae Davis says he and Sean Smith are the best pair of cornerbacks in the NFL. Word of that got back to Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis, and he respectfully disagrees.

Revis said the 23-year-old Davis, who’s only played two years in the league, has more he needs to accomplish before he can count himself among the truly elite.

He’s got to play a couple more years before he’s saying all that,” Revis said. “They’re a good tandem but they have a lot of work to do.”

Revis said that anyone who doesn’t think he and Antonio Cromartie are the best pair of cornerbacks just need to watch the film.

“It really don’t matter because the film don’t lie,” Revis said. “The film don’t lie. You can say what you want to say. You can say the sky is red but it ain’t red. That’s just what it is. We know how we play and we know what we do on that field not just as a corner tandem but as a secondary. We play great football.”

Davis may argue with that, but not many others would.

Any conversation about the top CB duos must include Charles Woodson and Tramon Williams.

  4. tjp2033 says: Aug 26, 2011 9:02 PM

While I believe Revis is the best CB in the league I will take the Eagles with the best CB’s in the league.

Nnamdi, Asante and DRC surpass the Revis and Cromartie.

I don’t care how has the best pair, all I know is the Eagles have the best trio of cornerbacks.

At least now I know for sure that the sky is not red!

oh.. and Revis “don’t” speak proper English!

  10. dequan81 says: Aug 26, 2011 9:07 PM

Totally agree with Revis and Antonio being ONE of the best tandems. BUT… Revis speaking out has surely got me silently rooting for Davis and Smith to have a good season. Don’t know why, but I hate when the Jets (coaches and players) speak.

  11. zaavonb says: Aug 26, 2011 9:07 PM

revis might be great but cromartie is not any good since san diego days all the qbs was picking on him and kyle wilson last year im a jets fan to so i know what im talking about cromartie got burnt several times but vontae and sean smith is good but not up there yet and the best corners are the eagles are the packers corners because with the eagles you got one person who get throw to alot and the other you got a ballhawk but sometimes asante gets beat and then you have drc and green bay you got tramon woodson and sam shiels and i throw another one out there kansas city carr and flowers

The Jets are so overrated. It starts at the top with the way tubby runs his mouth. They think they’re so much better than they are. They’ll be lucky to make the playoffs this year.

  13. chadcantcatch says: Aug 26, 2011 9:08 PM

It’s clear that Revis is the #1 CB in the game, and they are probably the best tandem in the AFC, but the entire league could be up for debate!

  14. steelerfan999 says: Aug 26, 2011 9:08 PM

9 OUT OF 10TIMES REVIS AND CROMARTIE ARE HOLDING THE RECEIVERS JERSEY,GO COVER RANDY MOSSS AND PULL A HAMMIE.

  15. jacksaysfu says: Aug 26, 2011 9:09 PM

Revis & Cromartie OR Asomugha & Samuel & DRC ?? Eagles trio is better, take DRC out and the Eagles are still better .Revis & Asomugha are close but Samuel is such a better playmaker then Cromartie . Even Eagle haters gotta concede that !

  16. randallcunninghamtheog says: Aug 26, 2011 9:10 PM

  18. trbowman says: Aug 26, 2011 9:11 PM

    Cromartie is overrated.

  19. moustache83 says: Aug 26, 2011 9:12 PM

If Revis and Cromartie are the best tandem than why did the Jets try and replace Cromartie this offseason?

Probably because Cromartie isn’t that good

  20. cruzp23 says: Aug 26, 2011 9:13 PM

the best corner tandom is nnamdi and whoever the eagles put across from him

  21. jacksaysfu says: Aug 26, 2011 9:13 PM

Samuel was targeted 34 times and had 7INT’s . Asomugha gave up ZERO TD’s last year .

  22. unbiased8383 says: Aug 26, 2011 9:14 PM

They are not the best, but they have a bright future. I wish the cowboys had 2 corners like them, I’d feel more confident than I am w/ Jenkins, Newman and Scandrick.

  23. theguywhotoldtimtebowtoshutthefup says: Aug 26, 2011 9:16 PM

  27. cspades99 says: Aug 26, 2011 9:18 PM

advanced stats actually had them (MIA) as one of the best tandems in the NFL last year.

not that I’m too into advanced stats, but Davis isn’t inventing this out of nothing.

And both Davis and Smith are better than Cro. Without question.

  28. pecosbob says: Aug 26, 2011 9:19 PM

All over-rated. That and four dollars will get you a cup of coffee. Dolphins finish 7-9, Jets 8-8. Get used to mediocrity.

  29. gbrown23 says: Aug 26, 2011 9:21 PM

Every corner gets beat…period..revis goes up against the best receivers in the league and very rarely gets beat that’s why he’s the best…cro can be just as good as revis if he wasn’t so inconsistent.we haven’t seen the eagles corners play together in real games so I think we need to wait before giving them the crown

  30. drgfri says: Aug 26, 2011 9:24 PM

The Jets are a “go nowhere team”, they “will be lucky to make the playoffs”, he’s “overrated”.. my God some of the comments here are comical..

Oh I don’t know.. maybe just the best season a cornerback has had maybe EVER in 09? Or as a team? Do you mean 4 playoff wins in 2 years and back to back AFC title games? The Jets are a young team with a 3rd year QB and coach getting better all the time. Just wait..

The Jets were a 6 seed last year. The year before that, they only made the playoffs because the Colts literally quit on the regular season.

    Am I correct?

  60. ny82jy says: Aug 26, 2011 10:45 PM

    @facted

Really? Thats all eveyone seems to have on revis is that one play. Everyone who knows the jets well knows revis was hurt going into that game, he didnt even practice that week. Even so, if he was 100% Moss ( a future HOF) made a great one hand grab. That means hes not that good?.. No corner in history has ever given up a td??Try checking his stats and how he shuts out EVEY teams #1receiver every week. Look how he held Reggie Wayne and Manning to 1 rec and 1 catch in the playoff game last year. He can lockdown anyone its been well proven the last two seasons. Check his stats and see what every big name receiver has done against him the last two years. Then say hes not that good.

  61. mrlynch33 says: Aug 26, 2011 11:01 PM

What was it like…..A MONTH AGO! when Revis was trying to convince Nnamdi to come to New York and said that Nnamdi was the best cornerback the league? It doesn’t matter we all saw an old washed up Randy Moss toast you last year Revis.

Uh, that would be back-to-back AFC Championship Game appearances.
    And your team?

Can’t recall when their players ever “promised” or “guaranteed”a SB, but instead honestly stated it as their only goal…one which they truly believed they were capable of achieving and were disappointed when they didn’t. I certainly wasn’t. But show me a team with a different philosophy and I’ll show you the Cincinnati Bengals.

@4thanddone. THANK YOU! And this if from a Falcon fan. Greer/Porter have actually been a tandem and have had alot of success. Notice how most of these guys only know the CB’s from the big market teams. I can smell “Fraud” from a mile away. People have to watch more than 6 teams to know the best in the league. Jammer & Cason in San Diego are a good duo as well. Smith & Davis are clones of Revis & Cromartie physically. They just need to put it all together.

    1: Revis/Cromartie
    2:Greer/Porter(Saints)
    3:Goodman/Champ Bailey(Denver)
    4:Smith/Davis(Dolphins)
    5:Carr/Flowers(Chiefs)

These tandems have actually played together in the regular season. Bodden/Mccourty(NE) and the big 3 in Philly will be tops but they have to actually do it in the regular season.

  74. kmurph1226 says: Aug 27, 2011 12:32 AM

Ummm.. Revis go look at the film. Pro Football Focus did research on catch % for each CB.

    1. Asomugha 13 receptions 2.95%
    2. Samuel 21 receptions 4.71 %
    3. Revis 28 passes 4.73%
    4. Sean Smith 5.36 %

Davis is ranked 20th, with a 7.95%. Where’s Cromartie? Not even in the top 20. So it looks like the Eagles have the best duo but the Dolphins tandem is better than the Jets.

Ok, some of you Packer fans need to take a break with this stuff. Congratulations on the SB victory. That doesn’t mean, however, that the Packers have the best of everything at every spot on the roster like some of you want to claim.

I really don’t think either Nnamdi or Asante needs to prove anything. Both have excelled regardless of who was playing opposite of them, and pairing the two only makes things better. With Nnamdi on the opposite side, teams can’t avoid Asante as much as they have. That means more INTs for Asante. Adding DRC to the mix means you can either field all 3 at the same time or rotate them to keep them fresh for later in the game. It just depends on the receiver sets the opposing offense is using.

Btw: Woodson is great but getting up there in years and coming off an injury. Tramon and Shields are young, and while they played well last season, there’s no way of knowing how much of that was them and how much was the pass rush. If you want to talk about waiting and seeing before crowning someone, how about waiting to see how the younger corners do this year first? The history of the NFL is cluttered with players who had breakout years and then fell back to earth. Not saying that will be the case here, just saying it’s probably better to not label someone elite based on such a small sample size.

What have the Jets accomplished (aside from promising they’d win the 2010 Super Bowl)?

Ummm.. Revis go look at the film. Pro Football Focus did research on catch % for each CB.

    1. Asomugha 13 receptions 2.95%
    2. Samuel 21 receptions 4.71 %
    3. Revis 28 passes 4.73%
    4. Sean Smith 5.36 %

Davis is ranked 20th, with a 7.95%. Where’s Cromartie? Not even in the top 20. So it looks like the Eagles have the best duo but the Dolphins tandem is better than the Jets.

    ——————————————–
read it. namdi was tasked with ‘guarding’ one side of the field. so the lead receiver would go to the other side and the corner there would get targeted ALOT. revis was always on the lead receiver. namdi will probably cover the best THIS year. btw, pff rates fantasy value, not talent level.

  88. nyjalleffingday says: Aug 27, 2011 5:42 AM

    @kmurph

That’s fine and dandy and all, but what kind of reciever does Nnamdi shut down? It’s a #2 over 70% of the time. Revis removes the best opposing reciever. If you truly wanted to evaluate the merits of any of these claims made by either of these players you’d have to break down film, watch them all in action, ect. Stats can be inflated, they’re not a true indication of performance.

The copycat approach of the Patriots organization the Dolphins took by keeping everthing silent and “in house” didn’t seem to work, so now they are going to try and copycat the Jets organization by everyone talking. The Dolphins have become one joke of an organization from top to bottom.

Stanklepoot, you are killing your cred if you don’t think the Packers trio doesn’t rate consideration. When Woodson and Shields went down in the Super Bowl, the entire game changed. With Collins as a safety, that secondary is impressive.

  98. samb27 says: Aug 27, 2011 10:10 AM

I haven’t really seen those 2 young corners in Miami, but Revis and Cromarti can’t be either, cause Cromarti gets burned on the regular, maybe Revis, but not Cromarti

  99. samb27 says: Aug 27, 2011 10:16 AM

Cromarti can’t even be considered, Mike Wallace of the Steelers, had him gasping for air, as he was grabbing his jersey all day long. A lot of these guys are living off of their once big time names, while their performance has fallen off

If film don’t lie revis, than I would say the packers have the best cornerbacks from last year they played light out in the season and the postseason. Woodson, tramon, shields best trio. And no I’m not a packers fan! by the way cromartie sucks azz only thing he tackles is air.

    **********************************************
Hilarious how JETS fans boast about AFC Championship “appearances”. as if it means something. IN this league, you better take it when you get there, because we all know chances are much better that you won’t gett there again. “Appearances!”.
Yeah, we came in 3rd or 4th place, Hooray!!!!

You All are nuts. The best CB’s In the NFL are on the EAGLES hands down.

  106. zinn22 says: Aug 27, 2011 12:11 PM

Revis is right the Jets do have the best CB duo. Likely by a very large margin.

But teams really need 3 quality corners and unless Wilson improves quite a bit I doubt the Jets trio of Revis, Cromartie and Wilson can beat Aso. DRC and Asante. Although its hard to complain with either.

Some may say Williams and Woodson are good duo. While Willams is good Woodson is a below average cover cb and really should consider moving to safety as he is more a ball hawk than a cover corner.

  107. eaglebranded says: Aug 27, 2011 12:23 PM

All this talk about revis being the best corner for not allowing touchdowns but he gets no interceptions in the game this year they play the nfc east recievers let’s see him shutdown some of these recievers with speed being there strong point and another thing who would throw at him when cromartie can’t check the second reciever on no team

  108. justentertainingthestupid says: Aug 27, 2011 12:57 PM

I think Vontae is right, Everyone talks about the Jets D….I think Miami’s corners overall are better. Cromartie blows. Not scared of him at all.

  111. footballfan80 says: Aug 28, 2011 11:37 PM

I think it is pretty clear to everyone here that the best 3 tandems in no particular order are:

    Revis/Cromartie
    Williams/ Woodson
    Asomugha/Samuels

Each of the 3 pairings have legitimate arguments against them.

Cromartie can play great at times but is inconsistent. Tramon Williams has only been doing this for 1 season. Samuels gets burned a lot and Asomugha is great at shutting down other team’s #2 receivers while playing one side of the field while the #1 receiver shreds the other Raider corners.

To me it comes down to Williams/Woodson and Revis/Cromartie because of their level of play in big games and playoff games. Asomugha hasnt played in a big game his entire career so hes the only one that hasnt been battle tested. Also, other than a little last year, we will finally get to see Asomugha cover #1 receivers instead of #2′s and #3′s most of the time.

Its very close. I also may add that Revis in my own opinion (which happens to coincide with the majority of NFL coaches, opposing QB’s, NFL Top 100 list, NFL “Experts” on ESPN) is the best on this list. He shuts down the elite #1 receivers every time with very little safety help. He arguably had the best season in NFL history for a CB in 09, and after the bye week last year and into the playoffs he was playing at his 09 form. He simply just removes the top receivers in the game and the Jets defense plays 10 on 10. Its not a coincidence the Jets had the #3 and #1 defenses the last 2 years with a mediocre at best organic pass rush.

Also, if it was even possible he ups his game even more in the playoffs. Ocho Cinco 2 years ago to 2 catches for 22 yards, Reggie Wayne 1 catch for 1 yard, and in my opinion the most impressive was 0 catches for 0 yards against a collection of all the Chargers receivers 2 years ago including Gates. The other Jets corners gave up some yards to each of the SD receivers that game but Revis did not give up 1 catch even with covering the much bigger Gates 1 on 1, and having more catches himself than Jackson when he was covering him (see ridiculous Revis int while laying on the ground).

  112. bealeman says: Aug 29, 2011 8:40 AM

Let’s not forget the Pack play a skitzo-psycho Capers D. Many times our corners are blitzing, zoning or just plain hitting someone. Most of the others seems to play a sortof vanilla cover 2 most of the time.

But Green Bay expects its corners to be able to tackle and blitz, in addition to simply flat-out cover, which they do as well. With Nick Collins at SS and 2nd year man Morgan Burnett at FS, the Packer secondary is right up there with anyone in the league.

  113. footballfan80 says: Aug 29, 2011 9:47 PM

    monropoobah :

Great post on the catch percentages! Not! You can pull any random stat out there and make some crazy arguments. All you have to do is look on the same site you listed of YPA for CB’s and you will see that Revis was #1 for the second year in a row and Cromartie was #6. But that stat or your stat dont take into account at all who the CB is covering and how much help they have from the safeties.

I wont boast based on those stats tho b/c I judge how good players are by watching the actual games. Fins Corners are good, but to suggest they are in the Revis/Cromartie Asomugha/Samuels and Williams/woodson category is just plain dumb. Those fins corners have never even played in a playoff game before, so how do we know if they are even any good when the games actually count the most? Dont get me wrong, fins corners are good, but theres a reason why a lot of people outside of miami dont even know who they are.

  114. bturner032002 says: Aug 31, 2011 9:00 AM

It’s easy to say your the best cb tandem in the league when your defense gets to the qb in 1.5 seconds.

Maybe Revis will learn it’s the best “TEAM” that wins the superbowl.

  115. ruvelligwebuike says: Aug 31, 2011 10:52 AM

Comparing the Jets secondary to the Packers is apples to oranges. Two different systems entirely. Revis is a better cover corner than Williams or Woodson at this point, but that’s his only real role. Woodson hardly even plays corner anymore….he’s lined up in the slot/nickel/safety/LB spot 75% of the time.

You could make a case for both, but I’ll say one thing. I’d take Tramon Williams with a broken leg over Cromartie. They’re both great cover guys, but that’s where it ends. Tramon is a FAR better in run support, a better tackler, a better blitzer and a more complete player in every way. Plus, he’s been huge when it mattered most.

  116. ruvelligwebuike says: Aug 31, 2011 11:06 AM

Green Bay Packer secondary in four playoff games last year:

    1. Wild Card in Philly- Tramon Williams ices the game with an INT in the end zone on the game’s final drive.

    2. Divisional in Atlanta- Tramon Williams picks off Matt Ryan twice in the first half. Once in the end zone, and the second he returns 70 yards for a TD as the half expires. The game is never close afterwards.

    3. NFC Championship in Chicago- Sam Shields picks off Hanie deep in Packer territory to ice the game. It was his second of the game. Plus, the surprisingly agile BJ Raji tries his hand in coverage and returns a pick for a score.

    4. Super Bowl- Nick Collins returns a pick for a TD in the Super Bowl.

  117. tlaw21 says: Aug 31, 2011 11:23 AM

As a Skins fan I can be neutral here. I also live in Iowa so I see alot of the Vikings(unfortunately) the pack, bears, chiefs, and rams. On paper yes the eagles look like the best but I believe that Tramon Williams, Charles Woodson, and Sam Shields do not get the credit they deserve. Williams isn’t really a household name but he makes play after play after play and was a huge part of the Super Bowl run. So I would put:

    1)Packers: Williams, Woodson, and Shields
2)Eagles: Nnamdi, Cromartie, and Samuel(chemistry is huge here tho)
    3)Jets: Revis and Cromartie
    4)Dolphins: Davis and Smith
    5)Chiefs: Flowers and Carr

You guys can give me all the crap in the world about the Packers CBs but I watched pretty much every game last year and I guarantee if anyone of you watched all their games you would at least put them in your top 3. All I know is that I would love to have Tramon Williams on the Skins D.

If Revis and Cromartie are the best tandem than why did the Jets try and replace Cromartie this offseason?

Probably because Cromartie isn’t that good

    **************************
157 of you agreed with this ignorant statement. Cromartie is not NA, but he is not scrap metal either This is why he is back, and why the Jets did NOT break the bank. Cromartie is off the chain opposite of Revis.
