Vontae Davis: NFL’s best cornerbacks are in Miami

Yeremiah Bell, Sean Smith, Vontae Davis AP

Which NFL team has the best cornerbacks? You might say it’s the Jets, with Darrelle Revis and Antonio Cromartie. Or the Eagles, with Nnamdi Asomugha, Asante Samuel and Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie.

But in the admittedly biased view of Miami’s Vontae Davis, the best pair of cornerbacks in football are himself and Sean Smith.

I’m going to go out on a limb and say we’re the best tandem in the league,” Davis said.

Davis was asked whether he could really put himself and Smith ahead of Revis and Cromartie, and he insisted that he could.

“You name them all and I’m putting it out there,” Davis said.

Dolphins coach Tony Sparano supported his player’s brash talk.

“I like to hear it,” Sparano said. “I think they need to play with swagger. They need to play with confidence and those two guys have confidence. Time will tell at the end of this thing whether or not they are …but I’d take them.”

    Vontae who???

  10. rayvens says: Aug 26, 2011 9:58 AM

    Why do NFL players think all they have to do is say something and it will automatically come true??? It’s to many self proclaimed “Better than the Best” players out there….we’ll see wat Tom Brady has to say about this week 1. Im betting he disagrees.

  11. lostsok says: Aug 26, 2011 9:59 AM

    If both of them, especially Smith, add more takeaways to the passes defended, they have a chance to be among the elite. Perhaps even equal to Madison/Surtain.

    But they gotta take the ball for that to be the case.

    Love to hear the confidence. Time for the results….

  12. redrew says: Aug 26, 2011 10:00 AM

    If I was picking off Chad Henne all day in practice too, I would think I was the best. When real games start and these guys play against real NFL QBs (Sanchez not included)….the tune will change

  16. youboettcha says: Aug 26, 2011 10:02 AM

    Pretty sure the Packers are up there in that conversion. People may not know who Sam Shields is, but he often locks down an opposing starter while Tramon Williams takes the other and Charles Woodson does his blitz thing. Charles Woodson is complete and Tramon Williams is a pro-bowler on his way to all-pro.

  18. madmax80 says: Aug 26, 2011 10:03 AM

    I’m a Fins fan and I would probably stop short of saying they are the best pair in the league. Definitely top 5, though.

    They are both still in their rookie deals, so they are certainly the best pair for the price.

  19. dblockdedicated says: Aug 26, 2011 10:05 AM

    Both are 23 years old.

    Sean Smith is 6 foot 4 and was rated top ten corner last year at #5 by PFF. He’s also 6 foot 4. Let me repeat, 6 foot 4. Does anyone know how hard it is to complete passes against someone 6’4 and a big ass wingspan? He’s got rare ability in that he can move with such quickness for someone that height. If only he could catch, he would have had 6-8 INTs last year and in the Pro Bowl

    Vontae Davis is 5’11 210. He hits like a missle and has insane closing speed. Teams didnt even challenge him last year and Brett Favre said he’s one of the best cornerbacks in the league. Not like that means anything, but still he’s got potential.

    The problem is that these two players have mental lapses. If they eliminate that, they can BE nasty.

  22. browningnagle says: Aug 26, 2011 10:07 AM

    Revis > Cromartie, Cro = Davis, Davis > S.Smith……..
    Is Vonte referring to the same Smith that got benched for Jason Allen….who then got benched, and thrown away, and was part of a really bad secondary last year?

    S. Smith ain’t bad at all, the only thing that puts himself close to the value of Cro all around, is his ability to successfully use controseption.

  23. otistaylor89 says: Aug 26, 2011 10:10 AM

  24. minkytails says: Aug 26, 2011 10:11 AM

    Charles Woodson and Tramon Williams could have season-ending injuries tomorrow, and the Packers would still have better corners than the Dolphins. Sean who? Seriously, that’s laughable. Sam Shields is better than any corner on the Dolphins, and honestly, it’s not even that close.

    Calvin Johnson had 4 catches in that game for 52 yards! So much for not playing. The next top receiver was Bethel Johnson who had 1 catch for 8 yards. All the offense was generated by TEs and RBs who are covered by the ILBs. As they have been a consistent sore spot for the phins you’ll notice Channing Crowder is now out of work. Way to know what the hell you’re talking about.

    Watch the video where he said it, he said it with ZERO conviction, because he knows he willfully had a case of verbal diarrhea.

    Davis and Smith aren’t even in the same league as Revis and Cromartie, and to all of you Dolphin fans who keep saying Davis and Smith are 24 and 23, so that means they have a shot due to their youth; newsflash: Revis is 26 and Cromartie 27, youth is not a factor here they are all young.

    Let’s see what happens on the first game of the season, over/under 40 points for New England? Over. over/under 300 passing yards for brady? Over.

  61. FinFan68 says: Aug 26, 2011 11:25 AM

    Vontae overreached–a little. They are both young and are solid. To say they are the best tandem is a reach but I like the confidence. Davis is good but occasionally has a mental lapse and gets beat on a double move. (he makes up ground fast but the opening is there) Smith is tall and covers well, especially with his long reach but he has a hard time catching the ball. He dropped no less than 4 pick-6 opportunities. Not reaching there; nobody else around and open field to the end-zone. It’s like he realized that and got too excited and dropped the ball.

    Miami’s secondary has had issues the last two years with ILB covering TEs and RBs rolling into the flats. The FS position was horrible 2 years ago but got better last year and should be fine this year. Changes were made to the LBs and if they work out, Miami could easily have a top-3 defense in the NFL.

    I’m sorry. He played the first half with a third string QB. He tweaked a hammy and sat out most of the second quarter on. My mistake. I guess his stats with a third stringer throwing him the ball in a little over one quarter of play was highly incorrect. LOL

    In a little over a quarter, with a third string QB, Calvin Johnson put up 52 yards against this “best CB duo” in the NFL. And that was with LB help underneath and safety help over the top. Thanks for correcting me…LOL

    Ok Nnamdi is CLEARLY the best corner in the Nfl. If you think other wise your an idiot. That being said Vontae Davis is a good argument for 2nd. His problem is no one knows who he is. Bret Favre said in an itervierview the Vontae is the best player in the league that no one talks about. Watch him play. He shuts down EVERYONE. The real problem with what he said is the best tandem. Sean Smith is a very solid player, but that’s it. I wish the finz would move him to fs and get another corner, he could really shine there. Hands down its the eagles for best corners. The jets are not in the aregument. Just as Davis is the most underated corner, Cromartie is the most overrated. Pack is definitley ahead of them.Will Allen & Dominick Rogers-Cromartie, the finz & eagles 3rd corners, are both better than Cromatie at this point in their careers. Bring on the Hate jersey fans. Week 3 last year Brandon Marshall TORCHED the overrated Revis for somethin like 10 recs 146 yrds & a TD

    ~~~~~~~~~~~
    Dolphins fans know that the Jets have been a PITA for the Dolphins for a long time. But in the last few years the Jets record vs the Dolphins is 2-4 including a week 17 loss that gave the Dolphins a division crown and knocked the Jets out of the playoffs.
    Granted, The Jets have gone to the AFCC the last 2 years but the Patriots are the class of the division and until someone unseats them, it doesn’t really matter. The Jets have a good team but handling the Dolphins with ease has not been the case and it won’t be this year.
    the haters can hate all they want.davis & smith did give up some plays but what tandem dont.miami’s bigger problems in the passing game have been with te’s not being covered well enough and i think that is gonna change this season i do believe they have addressed that problem with personel changes on d the fins did beat the sb champs and they did it with defense and the jets as much as i hte to admit it did a very good job of holding them to 9 points the problem with that is they couldn’t score.and the pats are a threat to win every game they play so if i were packer fan i’d be glad that they didn’t face an afc east team in the superbowl or they very well may not have that trophy now
  77. vaphinfan says: Aug 26, 2011 12:27 PM
    I’m a huge phins fan and i’ve watched evey game they’ve played in including the preseason. Vonte Davis is good the first 4 games of the season then peters out. Sean smith is good at covering but couldn’t catch a cold in alaska during the winter time. I was hoping they would actually draft another corner to replace sean smith this past year! Not saying he is that bad, he makes good breaks on the ball but drops everything!!! And Bennie Sapp is terrible too. Almost cost us the Vikings game when he jump offside when J. Allen made a good pic.
  78. georgeanderson2 says: Aug 26, 2011 12:31 PM
    The Dolphins organization is a mess. Create your own identity, stop trying to be like the other teams in the division. The Patriots copycat did’t work for you by keeping everything close to the vest, and now everyone in the organization runs their mouth thinking the Jets way is the way to get fans and win. Terrible organization with no direction or leadership, starts from the top all the way down to the gameday employees who pay no attention to the fans.
    Talking big and reaching? Sure.
    But there’s little argument against the fact that they are one of the best young tandems in the league, with the potential to be top tier as soon as this season.
    Sean Smith, especially.
    People need to realize that lumping Cro in with Revis to make a case actually HURT themselves. Cro is the worst of the 4.
OK woodson for an old guy, who 2 years ago won defensive player of the league, and had almost the same amount of plays last year. I’ll take that OLD guy any day. and Williams is the guy who baited matty ice and got a pick6 against Atlanta in the playoffs. he only had 6 picks total last year. I’m not saying the pack has the best tandem in the league, but I think they should be in the argument. top 3 in the league definitely. Oh and one last thing you could say the packers are overrated, but I’d call you a tool who doesn’t know football. on the road beating the 3 highest ranked teams in the nfc, and the beating the afc champs? yeah sound like there pretty dam good to me. 16 guy’s on IR. can your team do it? doubt it.
    it dont matter what anyone says the fact is davis & smith make a soid pair of corners that every team they face pays attention to and vontae making that type of statement is the right thing to do it is going to help push both of them to be as good as they can be and they will have some help from that front 7 that has only gotten better and will pessure qb’s all day long and smith & davis will be right there to make a play.any team that thinks they can look past this dolphns team will be making a big mistake thats for sure
    “Come on clown, do you really think because the Pack won the superbowl it indicates your squad has the best cornerbacks in the leaugue? In any case I would take the Dolphins tandum over yours anyday of the week..”
    ——————–
    You serious?
    Last I saw of the Dolphins, Greg Jennings was jogging 86 yards past your dynamic duo.
    Meanwhile, our 2nd and 3rd Corners were busy shutting down Roddy White/Desean Jackson/Mike Wallace in the playoffs while Woodson was busy blitzing the QB…
    3-1 Against the Jets over the last two years.
    Eat that Jets fans..
    Jets have too few teeth to eat much. They more drink after they gum up their grub.
    Do you even follow football? Did you really just say Marshall owned Revis for 10 catches for 146 yards. Maybe try starting with the NBA since the NFL seems to have too many players you cant even follow which players play in which games.
    Yea, I am sure it really bothers all Jets fans that they are 1-3 against the Dolphins the last 2 years. After all, the Jets have won 4 playoff games the last 2 years while the Fins havent won 1 FREAKIN PLAYOFF GAME SINCE 2000!!!!!! Jets fans will take 0-16 against the Fins the next 8 years if it still means winning playoff games while the Fins are figuring out how to win their first one in OVER A DECADE!
