Eagles’ Maclin, Smith both practicing

Jason Avant, Jeremy Maclin AP

The Philadelphia Eagles have taken a big step toward getting the whole “dream team” together, with two of their wide receivers getting medically cleared for practice.

Both Jeremy Maclin, who has been dealing with an illness, and Steve Smith, who is recovering from knee surgery, were on the practice field today, the team announced.

Maclin and Smith are both optimistic that they’ll be ready to go in two weeks for the Eagles’ Week 1 game against the Rams.

If both Maclin and Smith can go, along with DeSean Jackson and Jason Avant (whom Andy Reid calls the best inside receiver in the NFL), the Eagles’ passing game should be in great shape. As long as Michael Vick can throw the ball better than he has in the last couple of preseason games.

come on jeremy maclin instead of just practicing how about you play one preseason game to get more reps am i right maclin, these fans want you back, its just like the mayor wants the powerpuff girls badly

  2. fonetiklee says: Aug 27, 2011 12:25 PM

    That’s a scary receiving corps.

  3. bluefan204 says: Aug 27, 2011 12:26 PM

Good job trying to put that nonsense out there about Smith having a “long haul” ahead of him, Coughlin. You and Reese look pretty stupid right about now. Way to go!

  4. t16rich says: Aug 27, 2011 12:26 PM

That’s good news for an awesome Rams defense.

“As long as Michael Vick can throw the ball better than he has in the last couple of preseason games.”

Not gonna happen unless the right side of the line (center to RT) improves.

  6. captainwisdom8888 says: Aug 27, 2011 12:33 PM

I think Vick has enough targets to make it happen at this point. Now we just gotta plug Big Red in at right tackle and were set. On a serious note, to hell with this “dream team” BS. It came out of Vince Young’s mouth and he isnt even a true bird yet

  7. bitchassjosh says: Aug 27, 2011 12:35 PM

    can either play right tackle?

  8. icelovinbrotha215 says: Aug 27, 2011 12:35 PM

That’s a great sign. We need options to throw to for Vick. But he also needs protection ASAP. Anyone from the O-line may step and do their job now.

  9. janvanflac says: Aug 27, 2011 12:39 PM

They need to run the ball and throw quick screens and reverses with the occasional play action until they get their pass blocking sorted out. But even with that they should score plenty.

  10. jkosh says: Aug 27, 2011 12:39 PM

All depends on the O- Line. No team can win w/o a good line. Not even the “dream team. “

  11. gtmann says: Aug 27, 2011 12:39 PM

As an Eagles fan P L E A S E stop withthe “dream team” nonsense

  12. eaglesfootballfan says: Aug 27, 2011 12:41 PM

    Very Good News.

  13. typicaleaglesfan says: Aug 27, 2011 12:42 PM

We could have DJack JMac LFitz and AJohnson with the way our o line has been playing 7 won’t have time to get the ball out. With that said I’d like to see a good right tackle an MLB added to our team.

  14. godeepwvu says: Aug 27, 2011 12:43 PM

It’s about to get interesting. That is a scary WR corps, if they are all healthy.

  15. joebuckiscreepy says: Aug 27, 2011 12:45 PM

eagles should try jon dorenbos at RT.

  16. cletusvandam says: Aug 27, 2011 12:53 PM

Steve Smith is a possession receiver, Jason Avant is a poor mans Steve Smith. Desean Jackson only runs deep routes and Jeremy Maclin is a really good all around wr, still not healthy from a serious illness. “dream Team” indeed.
Also Vick has regressed back to one read and run.

  17. laeaglefan says: Aug 27, 2011 12:55 PM

They can have the best wide receiver corp in the history of the NFL but that won’t help them much if Vick gets killed behind that porous offensive line. I’m surprised that we haven’t heard rumors of Jon Runyan being asked to come out of retirement.

  18. themonkeyman says: Aug 27, 2011 12:56 PM

    U mad Eagle fans??

It’s delicious that the Eagle fans are tired of the “Dream Team” moniker already. Get used to it guys, you have 4 more months of it.

Then in January & February people will be asking what happened to the “Dream Team” when the Eagles come up short of that elusive Championship once again. LOVE IT!!

    U mad Eagle fans??

  19. laeaglefan says: Aug 27, 2011 1:03 PM

We don’t need Maclin to play a preseason game, risking injury against backups. Let him get back into the flow in practice and be ready for the Rams.

  20. godeepwvu says: Aug 27, 2011 1:09 PM

The Eagles will destroy the NFL with all of these weapons.

  21. cowboy88 says: Aug 27, 2011 1:09 PM

Too Bad that in MAX protect you will only be able to use 2 of them at a time!!!

  22. seabreezes51 says: Aug 27, 2011 1:11 PM

Doesn’t this make Smith ineligible for the PUP list? I gotta think that if he’s practicing, he’s playing sooner than later.

  23. jakek2 says: Aug 27, 2011 1:14 PM

Until the Eags get some OL, you might as well call them the Dream-on team.

  24. lbdpatch says: Aug 27, 2011 1:21 PM

All these Eagles Haters are just green with envy. By the start of the season the Eagles will have all these minor Issues resolved. They always look out of sync In pre-season and start the season great. Best pass defense, best receiver group and amazing running backs. Hate all you want but the Eagles are for real. Go EAGLES

  25. mymoodisrealrude says: Aug 27, 2011 1:24 PM

I would put Smith on the shelf for the first 4 games to play it safe. Its not wortht the risk to rush him. Its not like he is going to have any chemistry the first few games anyways. So risking and injury for 2 or 3 catches is not worth it. They have so much talent that alot of their players that will be cut are going to be picked up fast……

  26. phillyrick22 says: Aug 27, 2011 1:46 PM

the rams are not a powder-puff team, they are very sound on both sides of the ball. we need all hands on deck for week 1!

  27. woodyg says: Aug 27, 2011 2:20 PM

It’s funny how the Feagle Fans are trying to drop the ‘Dream Team’ reference at every chance ….. When it first came up, Feagle Fans were wetting their pants saying it over & over again …… Even before the 1st preseason game …….

The mediocre QB play of Vick & eventually Young will doom the Feagles to a non-playoff year & a 9-7 record ….. ……. Say it with me …….

    In the end ……..
    Eagles to Feagles ……
    Once again …..

  28. Awol.West says: Aug 27, 2011 2:23 PM

The o-line wasn’t that good last year either.
They were 2nd in total offense, 5th in rushing, 9th in passing, and 3rd in scoring with 27 ppg.
Sure, they have a mediocre o-line, but so did the Superbowl teams of GB and PIT.
Those teams have the defenses to be legit contenders, hence why Philly made those offseason moves.
Keep in mind, Philly was terrible in the redzone, but they had the 12th ranked defense in football.
(14th vs pass and 15 vs rush).

Preseason is getting more hype than usual because of the lockout and anticipation.
    So, the flaws are magnified.
The season is a roller coaster regardless, but this team is in prime position to reach their destination.
Now, like everybody else, they have to perform.
Returning playoff teams from last year have an edge on those that didn’t make it, but I’m stoked and cannot wait for week 1!!

  29. jacksaysfu says: Aug 27, 2011 2:25 PM

@cowboy88 Even in MAX protect they have 2 great WR’s . We still won the division lastyear . Stop posting on Eagles stories ,you should go worry about your big bad 3rd place 6-10 cowboys .

And why does everyone talk like Vick cant play ? He finished 2nd in MVP voting last year for a reason . The Eagles have been without their best reciever in Maclin and have a great new slot threat in Smith . With the starters in (minus 2 great wr’s) they put up 17 points , but more importantly gave up ZERO points . I cant wait for the season to start cause the Eagles will be great and im gonna have a field day on all you haters ! GO EAGLES!!!

  30. phillysuxbigd says: Aug 27, 2011 2:30 PM

and once again ried with his one dimensional pass happy offense will be your demise. still have no running game, so you will once again get knocked outta the playoffs by teams with superior defenses. happens every year!

I don’t know which Eagles fans you’ve been talking to (the internet ones just here on PFT to stir up trash talk, I’m sure), but every Eagles fan I know, myself included, disliked the term the moment Vince Young said it. And we correctly realized that no matter what we did or said, the media hype machine would take over and over-sensationalize a virtual non-story.

  39. zeussuperman says: Aug 27, 2011 5:14 PM

At this point, I’m not sure who is happier, an Eagles fan after the Eagles have won or an Eagles hater after the Birds have lost.

Don’t you all have your own teams to cheer for? Or are they just not that good?

  40. jdbaker1860 says: Aug 27, 2011 5:39 PM

Surprise, mysterious illness is gone and training camp and preseason is over. Vick only had 3 ints again a good team, good thing their schedule is 80% below 500 this year. Garbage team garbage city.

  41. jdbaker1860 says: Aug 27, 2011 5:51 PM

Rams Arizona Seattle 49ers bills miami Washington. Wow. That pretty tough right there. There’s nothing you can say so don’t even try to talk crap cause that’s the easiest schedule the NFL can give a team that has won the division as much as you garbage team.

Well they were good enough to beat the Eagles in 5 of the last 7 games and win the division in two of the last four seasons but to tell you the truth, they really haven’t been that good.

Once again, the Eagles do have a running game. However, actually using that running game to great extent runs counter to what Andy Reid is trying to do, which is to go down in history as a “QB guru” in the vein of Bill Walsh. You cannot be considered a “QB guru” by having the QB hand off a lot.

Seriously, Lurie is running out of excuses to keep Andy Reid on the payroll. Going out and getting all of these free agents is Lurie’s way of taking all remaining excuses away. The Eagles either make the Super Bowl or Reid is history. and I’m being generous, Lurie may be thinking that Reid has to WIN the Super Bowl or he’s history.

  48. jdbaker1860 says: Aug 27, 2011 6:17 PM

Umm Dallas was over 500 last year????? Don’t think so nice try. So 3 teams above 500 is your defense? Nice try.

  49. laeaglefan says: Aug 27, 2011 6:29 PM

I’m not sure if anyone else has noticed, but the last time I checked the Rams had two former Eagles as their starting wide receivers…..Danny Amendola and Brandon Gibson. Both seem to be developing into good players. Were the Eagles premature in letting these guys go?

  50. wicky888 says: Aug 27, 2011 7:32 PM

  51. phillysuxbigd says: Aug 27, 2011 7:33 PM

under the andy reid era when has any opposing team seriously had to gameplan there defense for the eagles running game????? you cant argue that they’re a 70%-30% pass-run team!! and when they fall behind against good playoff caliber teams they go strictly to the pass, period. they always abandon the run!! that’s really all im trying to say. and with fatboy reids belief about his receiving corps….it’ll just mean less of a balanced attack. same ol predictable eagles

    ==================================

Um, not sure who you’re talking to, but as soon as that came out of Vince Young’s mouth, every Eagle fan facepalmed. They all knew it would be a media trainwreck. And the only people repeating it are the media and fans of other teams.

BTW, what the hell is a “Feagle” anyway? You keep repeating it, it must make some sort of sense to you. But not to those of us conversant in English.
