Matt Ryan threw 42 passes in one half

AP

We don’t really have a lot to add to the headline.  But anytime a quarterback throws 42 passes in a half, we have to write a post about it.

Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan completed 22-of-42 passes for 220 yards, one touchdown, and an interception on Saturday. Fearing that Ryan’s arm might fall off, the Falcons took Ryan out at halftime against Pittsburgh.

Atlanta wasn’t very efficient Saturday, but it has been interesting to see them so aggressive throwing the ball in the preseason.  There have been a lot more shotgun formations with three or four receivers.  Julio Jones and a healthier Harry Douglas will let Atlanta transform their offensive identity this year.

Pittsburgh led 24-16 at halftime on the way to 34-16 win.

UPDATE: The NFL tells us the most passes in a first half last year was 30 by Peyton Manning against the Texans.

  1. Julio dropped a perfect 50+ yd pass, should’ve been 23 for 270.

We missed 3 easy TD. Gotta clean things up.

  2. Matt Ryan missed a lot of throws, and they had a lot of drops. This is an offense that is probably going to take a few weeks into the season to synch, which I attribute to how the lockout damaged a lot of teams.

  3. Steelers secondary held Ryan to a 65 passer rating despite not having either of their starting cornerbacks play.

    Pretty good performance I think.

  4. The NFL tells us that the record for passes in a half in a regular season game is 30 by Peyton Manning against the Texans last year.
    __________

That seems incorrect since the record for pass attempts in a game is 70.

  5. Well, all that running last year only led them to a 13-3 record and first round bye. Time to start slingin’ the rock!

  6. I love the behind the scenes footage the NFL releases.

Anyone with a football mind can see that Mike Smith is not a good football coach.

He is a very nice guy though, but a good coach? Nope.

This team is very solid and I dont think they win a Superbowl with him as coach.

  7. Matt Ryan used to be a much better college QB and a bit of a gunslinger but in the NFL he’s more of a system QB that rarely takes chances. I don’t know if Atlanta really uses him properly.

Thank you. Much ado about nothing. Better than Flacco but not by much.

When don’t Julio drop passes. he was notorious in Bama.

  10. Got to wonder if Big Ben will get any PFT love at all this year. He is clearly playing as well or better than anyone else at the position in the NFL right now, against back-to-back Super Bowl contenders in Atlanta and Philly, tossing bombs all over the field, but PFT hasn’t said the first good word about him.

  11. More evidence that Matt Ryan can’t carry the offense…and neither can Michael Turner anymore.

    Oh…and the defense still sucks.

    They’re in trouble.

  12. @flagstaffphotos. I love PFT, but you are right. Ben could have completed 42 passes for 500 yards and 6 TDs in the first half, and you would hear nothing about it on this site. Now, if Ben were to step on a lady bug,… that would be news worth posting. The title would read BEN ROETHLISBERGER ASSAULTS LADY (bug)

  13. As a Falcons fan, this is troubling, but not surprising. I knew as soon as they went for Julio that they would turn into one these pass-happy teams. 42 Passes for a whole game is too many, in one half its just retarded. I put Ryan in the same QB category as Flacco …… overrated. Hes great in the final 2 minutes, but average in the other 58. Run the damn ball and keep opposing offenses away from the weak-as-usual defense. They looked like balls against Jax too. The only thing about this that doesnt make me cry is that it was against the Steelers.

  14. Looks like to me Atlantas not concern about winning the games in pre-season but letting Turner rest and Ryan getting usa to slinging the ball alot more.In which makes sense in there new explosive offense, but maybe they should work alittle more on there CB play ,they need pratice and it has nothing to do with the QBs there playing because they’ve all burnt Atlanta .Its about Falcons DB play it BAD !! They better score alot of points if they want to win !!

Wow…42 passes thrown in the first half and you lose 34-16? What the hell happened?

    —————————–

What happened is the NFL abruptly changed the rule that you get one point for every pass attempt and didn’t tell the Falcons.

Concentrate on the number of completions, not the attempts.

  16. Flacco 4-3 in the playoffs. Ryan? Their stats are almost identical with a slight overall edge to Flacco. Which wins their SB first?

  17. I’m going to seem biased with this post but at least I’m honest. If Joe Flacco went 22-42, 220, 1 and 1 the city of Baltimore would hang him and call for Tyrod Taylor. I don’t understand the long leash for Matt Ryan. Just because you have a cool nickname (Matty-Ice) doesn’t give you a free pass. Sure he looks more polished than Flacco but he’s playing 9 games in a dome, 1 in FL, and 1 in the Carolinas. Not exact cold weather games. He’s a very talented QB, not arguing that.

  18. Matty Spice and the Dirty Birds better look at the ’07 Saints. We thought we could just outscore everyone. It doesn’t work that way.

  19. “MATTY ICE AKA OVER RATED”

let me guess.. you think Mike Vick is the best player in the league.

further proof opinions are like buttholes..

Heh. The Steelers had a pick in the first quarter and they almost picked off 3 others just IN THE FIRST QUARTER.

PFT didn’t say the record was 30. It said the most pass attempts LAST YEAR was 30 by Peyton Manning.

As you can see, the original text of the post said that 30 was the record. After I pointed out the error, the text was changed to say that the highest number of attempts last year was 30. My comment stating what the NFL actually said was deleted. So I do know how to read.

  23. Ain’t it funny. The falcons have been running their mouths about how they’re gonna win the SB this year. They can’t even move the ball against pittsburgs scrubs. The Falcons will NEVER win the SB. They were scrubs in 1966 when they came in the league and they’re still scrubs. All those years and zero SB wins. ha ha. that’s so funny. Geaux Saints!
