Suh says Lions hope to strike fear in opponents

nfl_g_suh11_576 Getty Images

As if the recent body slam of Bengals quarterback Andy Dalton left any doubt, Lions defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh explained to Lesley Visser of CBS on Saturday night his desire to induce fear into the minds and hearts of Detroit’s foes.

“We wanted to earn respect last year,” Suh said.  “I felt we did that.  We want to continue to earn that respect.  And now it’s with fear, it’s all about fear.  It’s about having quarterbacks fear us, offensive linemen fear us, every single game we step into.  And that’s by our play.  So we want to continue to get after quarterbacks and offensive lines and wreak havoc.”

They wreaked some havoc on Tom Brady tonight, at one point crushing him from behind and forcing him to land hard on his throwing elbow.

Though it remains to be seen how good the Lions can be in 2011, they won’t be boring.

Keep attempting to “strike fear” by playing dirty, and it won’t be long before a foe “strikes” his knee and blows it out.

Of course Suh is going to strike fear into his opponents. Specially when you go up to them and punch them in the helmet. He is doing a real good job of trying get rid of that “dirty player” label.

Ya Mankins deserved the penalty but how do the refs miss what Suh did.

It hurts to be hit by Suh, whether you’re winning or losing, unless your body has a “safety switch”. Fear has no score board.

I don’t care if he strikes all the fear he wants within the rules of the game, but once he starts cheap-shotting people to earn it it’s hard to give him any “respect.”

  26. visible4 says: Aug 27, 2011 11:53 PM

Suh is not a dirty player, this is getting way blown out of proportion. I admit his hit on Delhomme was dirty, but his hit on Cutler was a shove (no elbow and no blow to the head), his rag doll of Marion Barber was within the rules, and his hit on Dalton was a little excessive but far from dirty. And today, I mean c’mon, when is there EVER an NFL game where players don’t get in shoving matches after the whistle. Cherlius for the Lions is way dirtier than Suh and no one ever talks about it because he is not as well known and he doesn’t hit quarterbacks. This is just getting way too much attention.

  28. kishcollageit says: Aug 27, 2011 11:55 PM

OK, name a Dlineman that wouldnt have tried to hit the QB the same way?

    Seriously…

This was Suh’s plan all along. If the Offense needs to figure where he is on every play, it HELPS THE DEFENSE ALOT. Did you see how many bad passes Brady made when there was the threat of being hit?

as much as i want to try and say something funny and talk a little smack with Lions fans..ill just tell the truth..the Lions look like a legitimate playoff contender and their D looks like it could dominate opponents with an unbeliveable interior pass rush. All that being said…the health of Matthew Stafford (which has not been good since he came into the league) is the key to any success you’ll have this year and i can’t wait for the 2 games vs. the Packers this year..especially on Thanksgiving day.

  46. bullcharger says: Aug 28, 2011 12:53 AM

The entire Detroit defense plays with an edge. Defintely some could consider it dirty, but it’s within the rules. They defintely go after QBs. Rodgers already was dinged by them last year. Rodgers will have his hands full this year with the Lions.

The biggest risk to playing that way is their own QB will be hit hard again this year. Teams will head hunt for sure. I don’t think Stafford will make it through the season without another shoulder injury.

  47. valman61 says: Aug 28, 2011 12:55 AM

Suh is a beast. The best DT I’ve seen since Warren Saap. I’m a giants fan, I don’t think the lions will be a playoff team, but I know that Suh is a force. Call it what you want, but if you’re gonna argue that this guy doesnt demand double teams or make his team better, you’re lost.

  48. jazzytrav says: Aug 28, 2011 12:58 AM

    =========================

Seriously the NFL is turning into a pansy league and making folks like imjinbrdgr think they know what they’re talking about when they try to label a player “dirty”. As recent as 10 years ago would the majority of plays Suh or for that matter James Harrison were fined for even have been flagged?

When the NFL reviewed film and fined Suh for essentially pushing Cutler too hard last year (Pushing!!!!) I knew we were entering a new era. I mean the league had time to sit rewind the tape, rotate it around from different angles, sleep on it, get up, and think about it some more yet they still decided to fine the man for a two handed shove. This decision wasn’t made in the heat of the moment like the on field penalty.

I don’t even remember how the league justified the fine. Any Lions fan out there remember?

It goes without argument that Suh’s comments and style of play makes him to be a “dirty player.” Thae fact that he brags about it raises the bar to a higher level. I hope Sue enjoys being on IR after a few games into the regular season. Ditto Stafford, the oppsing teams will mimic Sue.

Detroit is kinda reminding me of the early warren sapp bucs tbh, where they’d probably finish a couple seasons 7-9 and what not, but they’d be that hard hitting team that would mess up your offense’s stats, we’d beat them, but it would be a tough drag out brawl….

only difference, The Warren Sapp Bucs never had The kind of offense that Detroit currently has…

The Lions are a lot better this year than that 0-16 team. Even then nobody thought that team was going to do much. I watched the first game that year and wondered if they were going to win a game. Another thing is the whole realm of football changes weekly due to injuries your team gets. So do I like what I see in the Lions now… Yes but one bad play and everything changes. Suh dirty… I hardly think so he is aggressive. He says he is going to play aggressive and he’s confident with skills to back it up. He doesn’t say he’s going to injure sumone on purpose .. Big difference

  60. arnoldziffel says: Aug 28, 2011 2:49 AM

You know … turnabout can be considered fair play.

Isn’t it ironic that the Lions have their own version of a glass quarterback – or at least one with a glass shoulder, who’s spent the better part of the two past seasons mending from his own injuries.

A loudmouth defensive tackle might just be setting the stage to get his own quarterback smashed – again, by continuously running his pie hole – giving other defenses a little extra incentive to ‘return the favor.’

Just shut up and play, dummy.

The Lions are gonna be better than they have been in a long time, but a preseason game in which they managed to rattle Brady doesn’t inspire fear. Do it after 9-11 and it might mean something. In the mean time…. any team facing Brady should be Blitz heavy- otherwise he will pick apart a defense. Love him or hate him, he is the best around….the Blitz is the only thing that makes him human.

I won’t say hes dirty but hes doesn’t care if he hurts people on the field. I don’t mind a guy thats looking to cause a little pain but the league is cracking down on that stuff pretty good and its only a matter of time before he lands himself in some real hot water with Roger Goodell.

  72. jimmylions says: Aug 28, 2011 5:53 AM

The people saying Suh will make himself a target are missing one key point — he’s already a huge target. That’s half the reason the Lions D-line has become so great! Offenses put 2 and 3 blockers on Suh, which leaves plenty of opportunity for the rest of our guys. And Suh beats the triple teams anyway!

And calling Suh a cheap shot artist is a colossal exaggeration. The people who are saying that should start cutting back on their drinking.

Historically speaking, Suh plays like an absolute gentleman compared to Hall of Famers like Alex Karras, Ray Nitschke, and Dick Butkus. Suh’s hits that are creating all of this whining are nothing compared to the days of the Black and Blue division.

Heck, compared to current TV hack Tony Siragusa, Suh is an absolute angel. He’s just bigger, faster, and stronger than the usual big, fat, nose tackle. He’s a beast.

  73. ubummer says: Aug 28, 2011 7:07 AM

Talking big after a preseason game? LOL. Pats treated this game as what it was, a preseason game. Lions treated the game as means to prove themselves.

What did Suh do last week? Absolutely nothing. Against the Browns. Yeah, the Browns.

Suh can talk all he wants about striking fear, but that’s just projecting his own fear because he knows he has a china doll for a QB and against even the most basic blitz he has a swiss cheese line to protect him.

So going to the play offs 6 out of 10 years and winning the division a couple of times during the 90s doesn’t count?

Or how about being a playoff team a couple times in the early 80s? No? that doesn’t count either huh?

and for some of you youngsters they were actually pretty decent in the 60s as well

  80. gman41 says: Aug 28, 2011 8:38 AM

Just wait to Fairley is lined up next to him!!
    Now that is scary.

  81. tv426 says: Aug 28, 2011 8:44 AM

This dude is proving to be the biggest idiot in the league. Literally!
Just shut up and play, moron.

  82. timpiker says: Aug 28, 2011 9:03 AM

He’ll strike fear alright – fear of being killed by this DIRTY player that should be in a jail cell next to James Harrison.

  83. TheWizard says: Aug 28, 2011 9:09 AM

    Good game, Lions.

Just try not to get blown out on Thanksgiving for a change.

  84. dd393 says: Aug 28, 2011 9:43 AM

The only fear is a “Boy Named Suh’s” accountant when he runs out of ink writing all those checks for fines for cheap shots.

  85. ggreeenjr says: Aug 28, 2011 9:47 AM

The lions will be in the playoffs!

  86. josh928 says: Aug 28, 2011 9:53 AM

Lmao @ bcar1023. U know he’s right. Leave it to a team that won’t do anything yet again to overhype a preseason game. The lions strike fear into noones heart. Suh is a great player, but a step away from a loud-mouth, cheap shoting pile of crap. And to say that the lions started “earning respect” last season?? Maybe a little but ur gonna lose that respect when u start taking cheap shots on players..

  87. mikeopp says: Aug 28, 2011 10:09 AM

Wanna see a cheap shot? go walk up to Suh and call him “Boy”

  88. gpete1962 says: Aug 28, 2011 10:11 AM

It’s not just Suhzy you gotta worry about !!!

    They’ve got a great D-line

  89. scytherius says: Aug 28, 2011 10:37 AM

I tell ya, I’ve been a Packer fan since the early 60s, but I’m really excited to see that the Lions may FINALLY be a real contender. Gonna be exciting if they are.

  90. hatesycophants says: Aug 28, 2011 10:40 AM

You know, there were haters who called Reggie White a cheap shot artist. I guess I should tell some of you “fans” Reggie was an NFL player who struck fear… never mind.

    @johnnycash, excellent post.

    Go Lions! Go Badgers!

  91. martinmayhew4president says: Aug 28, 2011 11:04 AM

It’s always “preseason champs to 0-16 losers” comments. SO WHAT? That was 3 seasons ago with a HORRIBLE roster, coaching staff and gm. Lions fans should and will continue to beat their chest about this team. WE WERE THE NFLS VERSION OF THE CLIPPERS not too long ago. Teams counted a guaranteed W on their schedule when they saw Detroit, and for the most it WAS true. But not anymore(hopefully).
Funny how opposing teams fan want the Lions faithful fans to sit down and shut up but why should we? NOBODY and I mean NOBODY has sufferd the way we have over this last decade. Suh used the correct word FEAR because thats what I saw in Brady’s eyes in a PRE-SEASON game that doesn’t matter.

  92. dtrb10 says: Aug 28, 2011 11:11 AM

I love the photo. This is how he plays. He is dirty. I hope Anthony Herrera takes this guys knees out with a chop block. Payback for what that lineman tried to do to Jared Allen. Does it suprise anyone that this team is finally doing good? I mean with top draft picks over the last 20 years I would hope to god they would be finally able to do something. Thing is when they fall flat on their face again I will be laughing!!!! This is the Lions we are talking about here.

  93. killathadon says: Aug 28, 2011 11:35 AM

    welcome to the D

  94. asublimeday says: Aug 28, 2011 11:46 AM

Aaahhhhhahahahahahha if he thinks the lions earned any respect he needs to get his head checked!

  95. henrykissingerisgod says: Aug 28, 2011 12:02 PM

Big hits by suh, highlight reel catches by Calvin, a couple big plays by best and another losing season for the lions

  96. jetsarestacked says: Aug 28, 2011 12:05 PM

I love suh and wish he was on my squad. However, he has to remember 1) his team has a qb as well 2) his qb is very injury prone 3) lions will only be successful if stafford stays healthy

You just know oppossing teams are going to go after stafford that much more if they perceive suh and the lions d as cheap shot artists.

  97. nappyheadedfoe says: Aug 28, 2011 12:29 PM

And the pussification of the NFL and its fans continues……

Suh is great for the NFL and great for the Lions.

To the haters….simply put, if Suh was traded to your team today, you would LOVE him!

  98. nappyheadedfoe says: Aug 28, 2011 12:33 PM

“I love the photo. This is how he plays. He is dirty”.

Yeah nobody has ever grabbed a facemask before….hahahahahahaha….get it together Alice!

  99. statesenator says: Aug 28, 2011 1:03 PM

Apparently, finishing tackles is “dirty.” Where’d you all learn that, pilates class?

  100. 1historian says: Aug 28, 2011 1:30 PM

FYI – I am a certified old fart and I can remember the 50s when the lions were in the hunt every year. I didn’t like seeing them SO bad over the last 10 years or so, but it does look as if they are on the verge of being respectable. I look for them to be 2nd in the NFC North to the Pack. Bears 3rd Vikes 4th.

Suh is really good and he and Fairley might make a scary combo up front someday but they both have IMO deservedly bad reps and that can have consequences – they could get hurt accidentally/on purpose or their qb might get hurt.

    Hopefully Suh will grow up.

  101. 1historian says: Aug 28, 2011 1:34 PM

P.S. – I just spoke to coach Belichik and he asked me to convey his thanks to the lions for all the ‘teaching moments’ they furnished him for this upcoming week of practice.

Don’t forget that the Lions’ coach has publicly stated that he wouldn’t be where he is today had it not been for the fact that he learned from (drum roll)

    Bill Belichik

The Lions are for real – they FINALLY got the right coach.

Ratliff is better and he doesn’t take cheap shots. Doesn’t have to.
    ——————————————-

Another Hater who fails to reveal his team!!!!!

If your Dallas fan….You really think that Watermelon head (1) he is on a losing team that EVER ONE in the league gave high hopes to, an (2) We gave Dallas, Kitna and Roy Williams. Players they really really wanted. (Dallas would love to have Suh for a later round draft choice)I THINK NOT…. Now who is making the bad decisions. Ratliff is slowly becoming a Larry Holmes looking flabby an sick, Suh is the Mike Tyson. Knocking grown men OUT!!!!!!

Bring it WaterHead what ever your Team is!!!!!!!

    Detroit Lions 4 Life!!!!!!!!!
