What we learned: Saints 40, Raiders 20

Pierre Thomas AP

After a busy Saturday, we got a chance to focus on one game Sunday night.  Some takeaways from the game are below.

If you missed our previous recaps this week, check them out for Thursday, Friday, and Saturday’s nine-game slate.

1. Drew Brees looked ready to go. In three long drives, he led the Saints to a touchdown, touchdown, and short field goal.

2. Saints tight end Jimmy Graham lined up all over the field while catching 5 catches and 73 yards. New Orleans has such great depth and continuity with their weapons catching the ball.

3. The Raiders backfield could be scary. Rookie Taiwan Jones was absolutely electric in his first preseason game, gliding past defenders and then exploding with terrific burst.  He finished with 13 carries for 81 yards and a score.

It’s hard to think of an NFL runner quite like Jones. If he can learn pass protection, the Raiders will be tough to stop on the ground. Big if.  Oh, and Michael Bush also had a nice night.

4. Well-traveled veteran receiver Derek Hagan may have forced himself into a role in Oakland with 121 yards on six catches, mostly with the first team.

5. Oakland rookie cornerback Demarcus Van Dyke may need to be removed from the starting lineup.  The entire cornerback group is thin, but Van Dyke sticks out.  The Raiders defense has sprung a few leaks this preseason.

6. Saints kicker Garrett Hartley hurt his hip and couldn’t finish the game.  Could we have another John Carney signing in New Orleans?

Oakland will have a decent offense and a terrible defense. Getting rid of John Marshall was foolish and losing Nnamdi is a big setback.

  2. iamgoodkid says: Aug 28, 2011 11:18 PM

i learned that the raiders suck balls, they gave up 40 points in this game horrible and they even had the lead you got to win these preseason games even though they dont count you have to win them if you dont it can affect you in the regular season horrible performance by oakland they had a 20-17 and end up giving up 23 straight points, horrible

  3. dorian26 says: Aug 28, 2011 11:18 PM

We learned that Joique Bell is a straight monster.

After a few preseason games, I still don’t see what’s so good about Mark Ingram. I’ve watched a ton of Bama, he’s an ordinary back to me. Not really a speedster, not a bulldozer, not a pass catcher and he can’t block a lick either. He can hit a hole – that’s about it.

  5. Chairman Al says: Aug 28, 2011 11:24 PM

Check out the score when the first-stringers were in there. Saints still led, but close. I’m not really concerned about the scrub on scrub score.

And its fine to analyze specific players. But the ultimate battle cry about the importance of preseason:

    2008 Lions: Preseason – 4-0
    Season – 0-16.

Still, nice game New Orleans. You guys look ready. We got to hit the drawing board some more.

  6. trbowman says: Aug 28, 2011 11:25 PM

Also, Van Dyke is garbage. Typical Raider reach. Guy’s technique is awful.

  9. osnap305 says: Aug 28, 2011 11:27 PM

Good. Demarcus Van Dyke was never going to start this season anyway. It was always Chris Johnson’s job.

  10. scomibord says: Aug 28, 2011 11:31 PM

taiwan jones may have had some nice runs, but jonathan casillas absolutely blew him up in pass protection. welcome to the NFL rookie!

    Taiwan Jones, OMG.

  12. theprocessoflosingmymind says: Aug 28, 2011 11:33 PM

C’mon man, take it easy on Van Dyke. Most rookie CB’s are going to look terrible against Drew Brees and the Saints offense. Hell, most CB’s look terrible against Drew Brees.

  14. raider23mike says: Aug 28, 2011 11:36 PM

I liked what I saw from the Raiders first team. Campbell looked good, T.Jones (a player that Al got criticize for drafting speed) looked way too fast for me to follow him on tv.

Team looking good heading to Den in 2weeks. Both McFadden and J.Ford didnt play.

The Denensive line was all over Brees. The Secondary is the weakspot.

Raiders were 0-4 in preseason when they went to the SuperBowl in 2002.

Raiders were 4-0 in preseason when they went 2-14(Russell Drafted months later) in 2006

Raider fan speaking, and Van Dyke is rough. You’re right that Brees is that good, but he just got picked apart in all three preseason games so far. It’s not bad to get baptized by fire as long as you aren’t getting your clock cleaned (see: David Carr, Andrew Walter), but he really needs to either get it together quickly, or get a spot on the bench until he does get it.

You say that like it’s a good thing.

Johnson wouldn’t be a starter anywhere else. He’s pretty bad.

  18. nomoreseasontix says: Aug 28, 2011 11:43 PM

I think maybe goodkid is really JaCarcass Russell.

  19. raiderfansteve says: Aug 28, 2011 11:44 PM

Shows how little PFT knows… Van Dyke not only not a starter but the #4 CB. Chris Johnson is the starter, currently injured, Lito Sheppard is the Nickel but hasn’t been with the team long enough to know everything.

And the defense was without Pro Bowl DT Richard Seymour and the two starters named above and at half it was 17-10.

Tell you what I learned, Jason Campbell looks MUCH MUCH improved. Looks comfortable, and that’s without his #1 RB (McFadden) or top 3 WRs (Ford, Schilens, Murphy)

  20. raiderfansteve says: Aug 28, 2011 11:45 PM

Or TE (Boss) now that I think about it.

  21. raiderfansteve says: Aug 28, 2011 11:49 PM

Last thing, I agree with guy above what a stupid comment that you have to win these preseason games. Being up 20-17 means Raiders starters and near starters were right there with an elite team and guys who won’t make the team are much better in NO. I like NO though, good team I’m not talking trash they were better but not by a whole lot.

Stupid to think preseason w/l so important… Lions 4-0 preseason year they went 0-16… Colts 1-4 the year they won the Superbowl…

  22. tatum064 says: Aug 28, 2011 11:52 PM

Taiwan Jones is the truth! DMC will also get it done!

  23. socalraidervader says: Aug 28, 2011 11:52 PM

I learned that Jason Campbell is the best Qb we’ve had since Gannon. I learned that our running game will be quite scary for any defense to stop. I learned that we really miss Nnamdi. I learned that the Raiders should not be taken lightly because we are for real!

  24. depotnator says: Aug 28, 2011 11:57 PM

What I learned is I could write impressions of watching the game by just copying notes from the announcers.

  25. huskersrock1 says: Aug 29, 2011 12:02 AM

Ya know we learned that Richard Seymour is a ya know a moron ya know. And all the Oakland Raiders need to do to fix their defense is ya know make it happen ya know.

  26. kayotiicdat says: Aug 29, 2011 12:03 AM

I learned that “iamgoodkid” was stupid too.. especially when he thought Brandon Tate was a runningback

  27. GG Eden says: Aug 29, 2011 12:05 AM

Imo, Sterling Moore is the next best CB after Routt and Johnson.

And its fine to analyze specific players. But the ultimate battle cry about the importance of preseason:

    2008 Lions: Preseason – 4-0
    Season – 0-16.

I’m pretty sure the Lions aren’t the only team to ever go 4-0 in the preseason, but am pretty sure we’re the only one’s to go 0-16. I’m also pretty sure that historically, teams with .500 or better preseason records tend to make the playoffs more often than those with preseason records below that mark. Someone’s going to be injury ridden this season [someone is every season] are the odds better for them to go on an win the super bowl or totally sink? REMEMBER, Green Bay won the super bowl with 16 on IR JUST LAST SEASON….guess maybe it’s better to wait for your players to show up for work with in the parking lot with a ball bat…that will improve your long term chances huh

  29. dlk81 says: Aug 29, 2011 12:11 AM

Hagen looked good at WR. Once Van Dyke learns to locate the ball and break up passes he will be a solid corner but until then it’s just catching drills for receivers. If this was a regular season game I don’t think the saints would have even attempted to run the ball.

  30. madamschefter says: Aug 29, 2011 12:11 AM

    Taiwan Jones is AMAZING!

  31. p4hbiz says: Aug 29, 2011 12:16 AM

Bush, Taiwan Jones, Mcfaddan, Ford, Moore, Reese, Murphy, Hagan & DHB OMG!!

But what’s even more scarier than that is our Secondary! IDCare if Lito Shappard in not ready, neither is Van Dyke, and PLEASE!! C. Johnson hury up back, S. Routt should hold his own… & please would someone cut the other CB Mcfaddan…

That guy makes me dislike Auburn, and come to think about it I don’t remember a decent cb coming out of Auburn either…

Other than that Oakland should be straight… And cudo’s to the O-line…

  32. siegiebaby says: Aug 29, 2011 12:18 AM

What I learned is that all the bay area teams are going 2 always have 1-10 picks In every NFL draft b cuz clearly they suck. Let’s go saints. Who dat nation baby.

  33. osnap305 says: Aug 29, 2011 12:26 AM

Taiwan Jones is going to be a problem. He’s been doing it in practice since he was healthy and he’s doing in it in games now. Guy is just so smooth and swift.

  34. siegiebaby says: Aug 29, 2011 12:31 AM

Thank You man. Not to mention they’ve barely been in the league a month. No OTA’s or Mini-Camps. These fantasy geeks are sick! As for the guy saying Oakland’s D will suck. They were missing some key pieces I saw. Was Seymour out there? Where was the cornerback Chris Johnson? Calm Down….

  38. thetruth619 says: Aug 29, 2011 1:01 AM

There are some idiots on here. Did I seriously hear someone say you gotta win these preseason games?? Wtf! lol! Preseason is about staying healthy, figuring out who’s gonna make the team, and testing things out. Winning is cool, not important though at all.

Raiders played well considering they were without their best player mcfadden, both starting receivers, starting tight end, starting corner, and two best d linemen lol. Kind of hard to stop Brees when your missing a starting corner and can’t get pressure on him.

  39. raidermanrock says: Aug 29, 2011 1:02 AM

  41. JackLeone says: Aug 29, 2011 1:19 AM

We learned that the Raiders are in bad shape. After a positive season last year, they’ve lost too many players to improve. The offense gives them hope but their secondary my not be able to stop anyone. All hope is lost.

  42. ilovefoolsball says: Aug 29, 2011 2:09 AM

  43. raidernation3739 says: Aug 29, 2011 2:18 AM

first off “imagaykid” is a retard. we didn’t play with mcfadden, Boss, Ford, seymore, johnson, schillens, murphy, and we still kept it close. the haters must think its amateur hour in football knowledge.

  44. crise40g says: Aug 29, 2011 2:31 AM

I was disappointed that the Raiders lost but then I read the box score and saw that a lot of the Raider starters didn’t play and I was fine with it.

I learned that the Haters will find any reason to hate. God bless ‘em.

  45. raiderhaterkiller says: Aug 29, 2011 2:47 AM

Man I got flashbacks watching the game today…..in my opinion derrick hagan reminded me of Timmy Brown on those deep slants over the middle. TJ reminded me of Marcus Allen with the way he flowed with the line using great vision to see the slightest opening, then Slipping through and turns on the speed. And from what I can see Jason has really stepped up his pocket presence. Watch him next week, he’s always looking down field, instead of looking for the quick dump off. Last note…I’m excited to see terrelle play next week. Unheard he’s gonna get some reps in. LETS GO RAIDER NATION!!!!

  49. andyr2120 says: Aug 29, 2011 5:28 AM

Van Dyke will be fine. He was always on his assignment, he just hasn’t learned when to turn and knock the ball down. On the first play of the game, he could have easily intercepted Brees. He’s a rookie and he’ll start making those plays as the season rolls on.

  50. chatham10 says: Aug 29, 2011 6:42 AM

  53. rubicon202 says: Aug 29, 2011 8:33 AM

Yeah, it’s amazing the hate for the Raiders? We rarely get props (we don’t need’em anyways) but everybody still loves my Silver & Black…remember the 1st Nation started with the Raiders…

  54. mdd913 says: Aug 29, 2011 8:35 AM

Raiders look to be a solid 8-8, 9-7 type team. They have some serious offensive depth. If they can find another wideout and can piece together an average line they will do some damage.

As for the Saints, I don’t know. Defense looked awful on the opening drive but Harper, Casillas, Franklin did not play either. Offense looked amazing as usual.

  55. socaldave2011 says: Aug 29, 2011 8:43 AM

The Raiders may go all the way to the Superbowl this year………

  56. sloraider says: Aug 29, 2011 8:47 AM

Look, If Jerry Rice played his Rookie year with today’s Media, he would have been considered a bust after year 1 where he was plagued with dropping balls, specifically in critical moments of the game.

Also, there were other corners who did not have very good Rookie years in Oakland either: Charles Woodson and Nnmadi Asomugha to name a couple. In fact it took Aso a few years to become good.

72% of the Raiders Starters / Contributors have 3 or less years of experience. They are going to look great at times this year and horrible at others. But, they will get better each game they play and will be a factor in the AFC West.

Finally, the Raiders played New Orleans tough into the 3rd quarter when they the score was 20-24 without Darren McFadden, Jacoby Ford, Chaz Schilens, Louis Murphy, Kevin Boss on Offense and Richard Seymour, John Henderson, Chris Johnson and Mike Mitchell on Defense, all are expected back for the opener against Denver, except Chris Johnson.

  57. mdd913 says: Aug 29, 2011 8:48 AM

    —————————————————-

The player you hear Ingram most often compared to is Emmitt Smith and people said the same things about him too.

Clearly Ingram has the same kind of vision, cutback ability, and consistent style. We’ll see if he has the long-term durability but right now he’s exactly what the Saints need. A guy who can churn out 4.3 yards per carry and not have to sit out games with injuries.

  58. scudbot says: Aug 29, 2011 9:19 AM

pflynn20 says: “At least no fans were killed.” That’s because the game wasn’t played at Candlestick.

  59. cwmorga says: Aug 29, 2011 9:23 AM

The game reinforced what I already knew: football, especially professional, shouldn’t be played on baseball diamonds.

Aside from that, both starting offenses looked sharp, and this is the 2nd consecutive preseason game in which the Saints starting defense was gashed by the run.

  60. oakfan23 says: Aug 29, 2011 9:31 AM

Hey, they got rid of John Marshall. They’re learning a new defense with no offseason, this is gonna take a little time. CJ is hurt and Lito isn’t up to speed, VanDyke is not ready. They’ll be o.k.. They played one of the highest scoring teams in league history who is two years removed from a superbowl. Saints have the same staff in place, they should look better than Oakland, lol. Oakland will be ok, just preseason.

  61. mdd913 says: Aug 29, 2011 9:41 AM

    —————————————————–
Half the Saints starting defense were 2nd stringers though. Roman Harper, Tracy Porter, Aubrayo Franklin, Jonathan Casillas were out. Defense looks dramatically different with SS Harper and LB Casillas in.

  62. mdd913 says: Aug 29, 2011 9:42 AM

  64. failcopter says: Aug 29, 2011 10:08 AM

I don’t see the Raiders having a playoff season this year. They need another year for the younger players to get experience. That’s not to say they couldn’t if everything goes right, but odds are against it. Campbell looked good against the Saints defense, and even Boller was decent, but the #3 QB (Can’t remember his name, don’t want to) was terrible. And yes, this is preseason. You can’t completely judge a team when half of their starters are gone at the start of the game and the rest leave at halftime.

  65. pigskinswag says: Aug 29, 2011 10:51 AM

What did we learn? We learned that Philip Rivers, Matt Cassell, and Kyle Orton can have career high passing games against the Raiders. We also learned that Jason Campbell doesn’t suck as much as the Redskins thought he did. (Bet they’d love to have him back now, wouldn’t they?)

  66. pigskinswag says: Aug 29, 2011 10:52 AM

Taiwan Jones was a thrill to watch. He could be special.

But I still don’t get why we start Nick Miller as returner. We have a team full of the speediest athletes in the league, yet we start Miller. I think we need to hand the keys to the return game to someone else.

for all the talk about the preseason, and the raiders need to win etc….bs …preseason is worthless, and that is why we need an 18 game season. That or make the games 10 bucks to attend.

so all the one’s whop feel this way, all i can say is that 4 out od the 5 super bowl years we never had a winning pre season, and the last time in 06 when we went 4 and 1 in the pre season, we had our worse season ever in the history of the team 2-14.

So once again the pre season does not mean anything.

    ——————————————-

Fair enough, but the starting Raider offense had its way with the starting NO defense as well.. in fact, both teams defenses looked bad… in truth, Brees, whom most would consider a top 5 QB, picked on a rookie who had coverage but couldn’t make a play on the ball… all without the Raiders D-line getting any pressure on him for the most part… which is no surprise since the guy gets the ball out of his hand in a third of a second… Believe it or not, people are busting on the kid, but overall, he had good coverage for the most part.. just needs to anticipate and look for the ball… something the great Nnamdi had to learn once upon a time.. and the same thing Routt struggled with at first.. it’s a learning process… cut the kid some slack.. no OTA’s… no real off season to speak of.. and he gets picked on by a top 5 QB… fortunately for the Raiders.. we don’t play top 5 QB’s very often.. twice a year with Rivers.. and this year with Brady and Rogers… outside of that.. I’ll take my chances with the kid figuring it out…

  74. raiderapologist says: Aug 29, 2011 7:38 PM

I thought Campbell looked decent, especially considering the guys he had to throw to. Wisniewski looked good for a rook. The D line had a hard time getting any pressure at all on Brees. McClain was active. Van Dyke was lost, but he shouldn’t be starting anyway.

  75. mawheeler4490 says: Aug 29, 2011 7:53 PM

and for those of you talking about how bad the Oakland secondary is this year, look at the stats. Oakland had 3 of the top 6 cb’s in the league and only lost one of them. You only start one corner, so we are still in pretty good shape. C Johnson is going to be back for the opener and the secondary will be good along with a much improved run defense.
