Lovie Smith tries to explain Chester Taylor confusion

Bears coach Lovie Smith insisted on Monday that he never told running back Chester Taylor he was going to be released.

“I guess there was a misunderstanding on exactly what we talked about,” Smith said Monday via Sean Jensen of the Chicago Sun-Times. “Chester Taylor is still a part of the team. . . If a player is released, I will tell him that, ‘You’re released, thank you.’ That is not the case.”

Here’s our best guess at the situation.  Smith told Taylor Saturday that Taylor wasn’t in the team’s plans for Saturday’s game. Taylor may have thought then he was done with the team.  Taylor told his agent and word leaked out.

Smith gave Taylor the rest of Monday off to cool off and hopes he’s back at practice on Tuesday.  Despite all the drama, we’d be surprised if Taylor was still on the team Saturday after final cuts are announced.

Thought we had a good conversation. I guess it didn’t go exactly like I thought it did,” Smith said.

  1. Welcome to the bottom of the NFC North Bears maybe the Vikings will challenge you for it though!

  2. Now let ME explain the Chester Taylor confusion:

The Bears’ management is second rate and confused. They lack communication and any cohesive vision for team building. Despite this they someone manage to acquire talent and put a decent team on the field that is good enough to win the division once or twice a decade but not win it all.

Until the Angelo/ Smith regime ends, expect no more and no less.

  3. The bears really should release him they’re better off without him. I’m more than comfortable with barber and bell backing up forte plus they get rid of Taylor’s awful contract for a guy who gets 2.4 YPC. You figure this would be an obvious play for the NFL’s 7th cheapest team

  4. Wow this has to be the first post I’ve seen entitled “Lovie Smith” in almost a year, lol.

    Wow he does speak.

  5. Baltimore sympathizes with Chester Taylor. There are more and more “misunderstandings” with Chicago lately.

  6. I really cant wait till the football season starts so I dont have to see “X TEAM IS A CELLAR DWELLER, COUNT IT” anymore. If there is anything football shows us time and time again, its that no one knows how to predict this freakin’ sport.

Anyway, sucks for Chester. I always liked the guy but he did not perform last year. Most of his snaps were short down situations, so that counts for something on his YPC. But when you need two yards and your designated HB cant get em’, its time to move on,

  7. Yeup, for all you haters out there, Chester Taylor was the reason the Bears got to the NFC Championship last year, without him, probably 0-16 now. ( That was all sarcasm) He’s a backup for a reason, if he was any good, he’d start. If he was/is serviceable, he’d still be on the team, instead he is going to join his 4th or 5th team.

  8. This quote applies to Taylor: “if you need 1 yard, he’ll get you 2, if you need 3 yards, he’ll get you 2”

    Bears front office sucks

Now let ME explain YOUR confusion:

The Bears have won FOUR division titles in the past decade, have been awarded THREE byes in the post season and have TWO NFC Championship appearances in that time frame.

Oh, but I’m sure you could do better, right?? Get a clue, man.

  10. The Bears entire front office is a joke. Team Prez Ted Phillips is a CPA and accounting/finance guy – yeah, that sure reeks football. Angelo is in over his head and Lovie keeps forgetting that the Tampa Cover 2 hasn’t won a Super Bowl since Dungy and the Colts beat him at his own game.

Whatever with the Bears. Bleh. Eh. Meh. Big wave-off.

  11. This isn’t exactly on the Bears front office guys. The Bears never released a statement saying Taylor was cut, Taylor’s agent did. It sounds like Taylor was pouting over yesterdays game, took something Lovie said out of context and immediately went to his agent.

  12. Maybe the Bears front office guy in charge of communicating draft day trades is the same guy that talked with Chester about his status. Anyone with half a brain knows that this is just a typical clumsy move by the Bears front office to try and get something for him via trade — which of course will never happen now.

  13. On the team, off the tea,- Chester Taylor will not be the difference maker on ANY team this year. …Unless he starts at QB for Bengals.

  14. As a die-hard PackFan, I still fear DaBears before either the Lions or the Vikes …….

The Vikes are sorta rebuilding & the Lions are spending all their free time in front of the mirror …. Lion Fans are really in for the ‘big fall’ when the Lions stumble into their bye week with a 2-6 or maybe (at best) 3-5 record ……

As dysfunctional as the Bears appear at the moment, alot of it is media created …… DaBears still have enough to look down at the Vikes & Lions ……

  15. This how the Bears make trades too…. wait until they have to get to 53 all hell will break loose, Still better than how the Vikings do things though.

    ORLY

GreenBay and pitsburg were early season SB picks by many. Philly/Atlanta were also expected to be good.

Arizona was expected to be horrible.

Some teams suprise one way or the other. Other are very perdictable…

    Seatle will suck rocks.(book it)
The bears will not make the playoffs (book it)

Wow…. Sounds a bit familiar to the situation when Olsen was let go.

Do you mean an under performing playing getting all pouty about not being good enough to stick with the team?
If that is what you mean then you got it.

If you see something else here then simplesimon is more than just your user name.

Have the Bears always had dysfunctional management?

9 championships… 27 Hall of Famers, 3rd best winning percentage and more wins than any other team in NFL history.

    I would say no.

  20. I will never forget the cheating way the Bears cheated the Ravens… NEVER, even tho I am not a ravens fan…

They are terrible people… I don’t care if they win the super bowl 10 years in a row… they are terrible people

  21. Boo hoo, boo hoo. If he hadn’t gone chasing dollars to be the no. 2 back in Chicago he’d still have a job in Minnesota where he was appreciated and utilized.

  22. Wow…. Poor Ravens.
Too stupid to make their draft pick when the clock ran out and they knew the deal with the Bears was not done yet.

You can blame Ozzie Newsome for that boneheaded move.
It was his pick and he was asleep at the wheel.
