Ndamukong Suh “had a blast beating up on the Brady Bunch”

Ndamukong Suh AP

Ndamukong Suh isn’t shy on the field, and he’s become increasingly visible off it.

From media tours to endorsements to social media, Suh isn’t bashful when it comes to putting himself out there. That includes occasional video messages on Facebook to his fans.

“What up Twitter fam,” Suh told his followers on Sunday. “Last night was a lot of fun beating up on the Brady Bunch. I think we played pretty well as a team. It’s a good start, happy with where we’re at right now but never satisfied and looking for more.”

Perhaps there will be some hang-wringing about Suh’s confidence, but we like it. There is a perception there is more trash talking these days, but players are a lot more vanilla than in the 70’s and 80’s because there are so many media outlets.

The NFL needs characters, and Suh is evolving into one of its biggest stars.

It’s funny. His performance in this game was the same as it was in the regular season game they played on thanksgiving last year. In both games, he only really played for one half. At least he had an excuse for this preseason game since he was off the field.

You mean like Defensive Rookie of the Year? Pro-Bowl? All-Pro. If non of those count then you are correct, he has done nothing.

  17. ilovefoolsball says: Aug 29, 2011 1:14 PM

I love it. This only makes the target bigger on the Lions, which they don’t need. If they were smart they’d want to fly under the radar a little bit and sneak up on some teams, but with this loudmouth, everyone will hear them coming and bring their A game.
This guy is a gamer, but it will take more than just him to make them a contender.

  18. redwinglion says: Aug 29, 2011 1:14 PM

I find it ironic that many fans who whine about the NFL moving to a softer, safer game criticize Suh for playing/talking like he’s an old-time NFL player.

One thing’s for sure about Suh after watching this preseason: I sure as hell don’t want to be caught in a dark room with him.

  35. gcsuk says: Aug 29, 2011 1:19 PM

Sure is a long way from Barry “Act Like You Been There Before” Sanders. Maybe Suh should take a lesson from him. One of the most respectful and respected players to EVER play the game.

  36. dfeltz says: Aug 29, 2011 1:20 PM

Suh is already one of the NFL’s biggest stars? I don’t think I would put him in the top 25. I guess getting flagged, fined and being a dirty player makes you star these days. Instead of being called a star, just call him notorious.

  37. r8rsfan says: Aug 29, 2011 1:20 PM

This guy is a monster and gets bigger/badder all the time. He’s the straight truth.

  38. kchoya says: Aug 29, 2011 1:21 PM

    Cue the following comments:

    1. Lions fans who love the guy and think the haters are just jealous.

    2. Pats fans who claim that if this was a regular season game, the score would have been reversed.

    3. People claiming Suh is dirty and he should be suspended.

    4. Several posts about how some other player is stronger than Suh, or that some offensive lineman is going to teach Suh a lesson and take out his knees.

    Did I miss any?

  39. holdthemayo123 says: Aug 29, 2011 1:21 PM

Have fun watching them in the playoffs, Mr Suh.

  40. 6thsense79 says: Aug 29, 2011 1:22 PM

Well…Nice to see the refs didn’t call BS calls when pretty boy Brady was getting hit. I respect the man’s talents but can’t stand him ever since he started whinning for penalties if a defender so much as messes up his new hair do.

  41. boiler72 says: Aug 29, 2011 1:22 PM

I commend and respect what Mayhew and Schwartz are doing in Detroit and moving forward, there’s a lot to like about this team and the program that they’re building. However, the fact is, until they actually make the playoffs, they’re the same old Lions.

The fans do this every year with that team – “This is gonna be the year they get in”, etc. and it still has yet to happen. Same thing with the 49ers the last few seasons. All hype and talk and no results. Yet.

Too funny. If you really believe that then you must have been missing football the last decade.

Pats won’t look pretty in the preseason, but Belichick always has a plan for a winning season.

It’d be nice if they’d fade into oblivion, but even that one year without Brady the Pats were pushing for the playoffs.

With so many players today that are light weights. When you see ones that are Real Football Players and play the Game as it was always intended to be played it is great to see. The NFL needs more Harrison, Suh’s, Clay Matthews Reeds and others. These type players are born, you either have Heart and Courage or you do not, Talent or no Talent.

  52. scudbot says: Aug 29, 2011 1:33 PM

Of course sportswriters like Suh. Otherwise you’d be stuck with Rex Ryan’s mouth, Tebow’s exact depth chart position, and police blotters. There’s always the possibility that someone will make Suh feels slightly less confident but that would be real info about real football, much less interesting.

Mr. Suh is well on his way to becoming one of the NFL’s most hated players.

    ————————————————

You are correct, but I’m not sure it is how you meant it. He will be one of the most dominating players in the game who isn’t afraid to be a public figure. Tons will love him and tons will hate him. Everyone will have a strong opinion because he is that relevant. This coming from a Vikings fan. I’d take Suh over any Dlineman in football right now. He has Haynesworth’s talent + the drive to be great. If the Lions become relevant he’ll have millions that hate him.

  54. football58 says: Aug 29, 2011 1:35 PM

SUH is awesome and I hated Nebraska. This guy will be the best defensive lineman in the league for the next 10 years. If Stafford stays healthy(big if) then the Lions can make the playoffs.

  55. dafixisin says: Aug 29, 2011 1:37 PM

When Nick Farley makes it onto the field, these two are gonna be like Reggie White-Jerome Brown 2.0.

  56. spunjmunke says: Aug 29, 2011 1:38 PM

I love this guys intensity. I think he’s an odds-on favorite to lead the league…in fines from the commish.

That being said, I wish he was on my team.

  57. bischof21 says: Aug 29, 2011 1:38 PM

You know what’s funny is that no players or coaches are complaining about Suh. Yet people think there are guys who are going to gun for his knees. You know who gets bent out of shape over Suh? People who are upset he isn’t on their team. He get so much press from writers because they know it will get hits. Suh is quickly becoming a big part of the NFL. If the Lions do start winning he’ll be a huge face of the NFL.

Label him what you want but the guy is a force in this league.

  58. ninjapleazee says: Aug 29, 2011 1:39 PM

Wow..Lions fans are either completely idiotic or delusional… maybe I’ll speak 3rd grader so they can understand…

ACCOMPLISH SOMETHING IN REGULAR SEASON.. AS A TEAM.

If all you guys can boast about is 1 player yapping his gums… it’s a TEAM sport.. not one loud mouth who had ONE “breakout” rookie season.. lets see where he is in 5 years then yap. We WILL have a good year.. our team is so GREAT… if Stafford goes down in which 80 percent chance he will.. then what will you guys be yapping about? OH NEXT year we’ll be great…

  59. depotnator says: Aug 29, 2011 1:39 PM

  60. simalex says: Aug 29, 2011 1:41 PM

    “Stay classy, Suh.”

I don’t know what NFL fans want. When guys do the coach-speak thing, they’re boring. When they have personality, they’re showboaters and egomaniacs and need to learn some class and need to act like “they’ve been there before.

I like Suh’s swagger. He’s good. He knows it. He’s not trying to put on some “aw shucks” routine. I think his attitude is good for the Lions as a whole. Of course the key part here is that his play on the field backs it up and then some, so he can afford to have a swagger.

People complaining about his “dirty” play would be better off criticizing the inability of their own offensive linemen to stop him.

  61. capslockkey says: Aug 29, 2011 1:42 PM

Usually when you are the underdog, you want to sneak up on people and play with that chip of disrespect on your shoulder. Painting a huge target on yourself by running your mouth as if you are the champs already when you haven’t won anything in over a decade or more doesn’t help. Just more bulletin board material for the other three teams in the division. When’s the last time Detroit has won the division, made the playoffs, hell had a WINNING RECORD?

  62. jimmysee says: Aug 29, 2011 1:42 PM

Individual honors are not why the game is played.

The goal is to win games.

Who quit on his team right before the start of the season and left them scrambling to find a replacement.

Suh talks a lot, but the Lions have been down so long, and they were to the point that they accepted winning. I really think he’s being a leader, and when the best player on your team says we’re not going to accept this anymore, it’s got to rub off on everyone else.

And the guy is a f’ing beast. Saw a Reggie White 2.0 line someone posted a little while ago. A little too early for that I think, but going to be fun to watch him for the next several years. Thank God he’s in the NFC.

  65. theytukrjobs says: Aug 29, 2011 1:43 PM

I don’t care how they look in preseason. The Lions were 6-10 last year and that was a great season for them. Their defense was ranked 21st. All of this despite Suh’s big mouth and dirty play.

  66. depotnator says: Aug 29, 2011 1:43 PM

“The guy is a beast but let’s wait on the Lions til they actual win a few real games….”

The Lions don’t have to win a lotta games for them to be a defensive force in this league. They have to love their swagger. Not many expect the Lions to make the playoffs – yet. One step at a time. Suh and co. will take care of their side of the ball, but the offense has to do their part as well to win a lot of games. Stay healthy, Stafford.

  67. maddog111 says: Aug 29, 2011 1:43 PM

  76. pftwstbshmc says: Aug 29, 2011 1:51 PM

Suh and the Lions should be grateful that they do not face the Patriots in the regular season. BB and the team don’t like teams being loudmouths after winning – even when they didn’t have a bunch of starters who didn’t make the trip.
To those thinking that if the Patriots wouldn’t reverse this score in the regular season with all the players on the field really don’t have a clue about football.

  77. racerx1225 says: Aug 29, 2011 1:52 PM

The Pats were embarrassed on every level. Id say they take 3rd in their division this year. Suh is the best DL in the game and he showed why. Ninjapleazee you are a tool for not realizing it. Tom Brady and the Patsys are just like any other team and that is: only as good as your offensive line first, def line 2nd. I bet they are missing Richard Seymour now :)))

    White wash.

The real story is that he committed yet another unsportsmanlike, his second of the preseason. He threw a punch vs. NE, plain as day, and should have been ejected. He’ll be fined again. Will PFT mention that? Who knows.

I’m guessing the crew at PFT got yelled at for the completely appropriate “Dirty Player” thread and have put their balls back in their wives purses.

    a) every single person that “hates” Suh, wouldn’t think twice about having him on their team

    and

    b) haven’t you learned yet?? its naysayers that fuel the fire that is ndamukong suh.

good luck to the rest of the NFL in 2011.

oh yea and to all the “have some back up OL take out his knees and he’ll learn” talk – It’s not just Suh that teams fear…its this entire DL. You think teams are going to go after arguably this teams top player KNOWING full well that a cheap shot WILL BE RETURNED by taking out their top player?? most likely being their QB. This defense is violent and very protective of its own…good luck with that.

  83. solidmarine says: Aug 29, 2011 1:57 PM

Like his aggressiveness but you have to control it to keep yourself from crossing the line. If he gets fined for throwing the punch at Mankins it will probably be his last fine. Next he would start losing games. Can’t help your team much when you are stuck on the sidelines.

  88. jamezz23 says: Aug 29, 2011 2:03 PM

Pats got manhandled in a preseason game. No more meaningful than what they did the first two games. They’re still Super Bowl favorites in Vegas and those boys aren’t dumb. Watch what happens.

Lions are a nice up and coming team that needs a few more parts, but not this year, in that division.

The only people who aren’t taking the Lions seriously are all the negative trash talkers here on PFT. To be honest if you talk to any team, they are all taking the Lions seriously, so you can type on your keyboard in all caps that “THEY HAVE TO WIN FIRST THEN WE’LL TAKE THE SERIOUSLY”. That’s why your not an NFL coach or anything involved in sports in gerneal. Believe me, the Lions will be taken seriously this year, there’s no doubt.

Not really, Reggie White was a class act.

    ——————————

What has Suh done to say he isn’t a class act or a good person? I think he is a better person than White. Suh has never taken money from people saying he is going to do something with it like build a church only to pocket the money. Or when he was selling those gold pin cheese wedges and was suppose to give the profits to charity and he pocketed that money as well. Reggie talked about doing things but didn’t really do them.

  106. kevpft says: Aug 29, 2011 2:47 PM

The problem with this guy, and so many other adored pro athletes these days, is that people mistake trash talking for character.

Players are more vanilla these days not because of the media, not because of Roger Goodell, but because they are more vanilla. They seem to be less articulate, less well-educated, less cultured, and simply less individualistic.

They’re products of a culture that has increasingly turned into a machine for manufacturing specialized pegs to fill specialized holes. Most of these guys are doing the job they’ve been exclusively bred for for a decade or more. There’s simply not much there besides what we see or hear.

I’m not saying that Suh’s a bad guy, or that any other particular athlete’s a bad guy. And there are still true characters in pro sports, though they’re becoming more scarce.

But when you formalize a system to the degree that pro, college, and prep sports has been formalized in this country, the number one goal of that formalization is to eliminate surprises or variability. What do we get? A bunch of robotic brutes going through the motions, with very narrow perspectives or expressive ability.

I hope that Suh turns out to be a true character, and not just the latest in a terribly long line of empty blowhards who spend their professional lives striking a stupid fantasy pose to compensate for a complete lack of substance and genuine interest.

Honestly, PFT and CBS are such Suh haters! Can’t you guys go one day without hating on Suh? PFT was the first to start on the Logan Mankins incident…. almost screaming for the NFL to fine him. Also, forgetting to mention that Mankins had a player in a hold pulling him down to the ground! Maybe a racial thing possibly? I am not black by the way.

Everything that is written about Suh from this site has been negative and trying to convince people that this guy is dirty. How about writing a bit on how this guy came into the league and dominated from day 1 and changed the culture of a team as a ROOKIE. How about writing a bit how he has penalized for making two legal hits (i.e. Marion Barber hair pull and Jay Cutler hit)? Not only did those two LEGAL hits cost his team yards, it has added to this bogus movement branding him as dirty. Its only a matter of time before his team mates start sticking up for him as did Hines ward and Troy P. for Harrison.

Bottom line is stop hating on a great player and find something more interesting to write about. This is getting old!

every true lions fan knows we have not proven a thing yet until we start winning season games consistently. we have not done this yet. if anyone is guilty of putting out predictions, it is the media. do we get caught in the hype from time to time, of course we do. it is hard not to, when your team is full of potential and you have been the worst organization in sports for the past ten years. we have been disappointed year after year, so we are more cautious than “one” would think.

most people are saying if the lions were smart, they would want to stay under the radar and catch teams by surprise. yes, this makes sense. however, suh wants opposing offenses to fear them. this is would be a tough feat to achieve if they were under the radar. it would be different if the defensive line was not backing up suh’s talk.

if you look at the article it states, suh is happy with the way they played but not to be satisfied. im not sure what is wrong with this…

  129. stavreafavre says: Aug 29, 2011 4:00 PM

There is nothing wrong with being excited about the outcome of that game. Suh said immediately after the game that the win meant nothing. But that doesn’t change the fact that they enjoyed and were excited about physically punishing the Patriots. I think even most Lions fans know that the Lions could never be that efficient against the Patriots in a regular season game. But ever since Barry left the Lions have been a boring team…not just bad, but boring. Regardless of what their record ends up being, they will not be boring to watch.

They are in the division of the two NFC championship teams from last year and the eventual Superbowl champ. I don’t see them making the playoffs regardless of Suh. If they do it’s a great accomplishment, but 9-7 or less is a just another failure.

Suh is painting a big target on the back of their made of glass qb Stafford. If he keeps talking and playing dirty, Stafford will get taken out. It’s the same as a pitcher throwing at a batters head in baseball. Sure, go ahead and do it but you better be prepared for the consequences. And yeah, Kevin Williams, Julius Peppers, and Clay Mathews play in the division. The only difference between them and Suh is they have won a lot in the NFL and they play the game without cheap shots.

  142. staffordsyear says: Aug 30, 2011 2:52 AM

  145. dewalt2990 says: Aug 30, 2011 7:28 AM

Preseason or not, Tom Brady was mentally defeated(see him sulking on the turf)…or maybe he was just faking it…cause its preseason, so none of it counts right? That must have been a Tom Brady clone then……only thing that makes sense to some of you.

  146. dawgsafety13 says: Aug 30, 2011 7:44 AM

Quite a lot of discussion about a team that is irrelevent, no?

Anyone who criticizes Suh as “not classy” or accuses him of not being a class act could not be any more misinformed. Ask the kids at the childrens hospital about his class. Ask the others who have benefitted from his countless charities. Ask the University of Nebraska how they like the new sports complex he donated.

You people have let jealousy cloud your minds and affect your ability to judge character.

Suh is a monster on the field, but he is an upstanding citizen off of it. He is well spoken and intelligent; everything you see from him is calculated.

His job is to change the culture and gain the respect that comes with intimidation. We have been the laughin stock of the league for 10 years…but he has silenced that laughted and replaced it with a gasp.

Keep up the good work. You have the respect of your peers and the respect of the only city that matters. Keep up the good work.

I absolutely laugh my arse off at the NFL and its pansy fans.

I look down upon the NFL for turning into such as sissy league…..baseball didn’t flinch when two young catchers (Carlos Santana and Buster Posey) were steam rolled at home plate and lost for the year with nasty injuries. Baseball has always been played that way and it will continue to be played like that, balls to the wall.

The NFL is a joke…college football is way more physical (so is baseball) and nobody plays football with more passion and intensity than college players. The NFL is a snoozefest with soft players, and pansy fans.
