Vikings bid adieu to Rhett Bomar

The Vikings have dropped several players from the roster in advance of Tuesday’s deadline for trimming the team from 90 players to 80.

Gone are defensive back Chris Adingupu (the equipment manager is happy about that), offensive lineman Conan Amituanai (the equipment manager is even happier), tight end Ed Barham, quarterback Rhett Bomar, defensive back Simeon Castille, linebacker Jonathan Gilmore, receiver Andre Holmes, linebacker Kyle O’Donnell, kicker Nate Whitaker, and defensive tackle Colby Whitlock.

Bomar is the biggest (not longest) name of the bunch, and his departure is no surprise. He had a shot to make the team before Donovan McNabb arrived; thereafter, Bomar became the fourth man on the depth chart, and necessarily the odd man out.

Bomar didn’t help himself by allegedly helping himself to a few too many alcoholic beverages and then driving a car during a day off from training camp.

With the Vikings cutting him now, Bomar has a chance to make an impression elsewhere, before the mad scrum of available players kicks into high gear on Saturday.
