More Vick contract details

Michael Vick AP

We explained earlier today that Vick’s six-year $100 million contract with $40 million guaranteed is actually a five-year, $80 million contract with $35.5 million guaranteed.

There are some new details regarding the deal.

Vick’s $20 million compensation for 2011 comes from a $7 million signing bonus, a $10 million guaranteed base salary, and a $3 million roster bonus.  His cap number is $14.4 million, which created $1.8 million in additional cap room for the team.

In 2012, Vick earns a guaranteed base salary of $12.5 million.  His cap number is $13.9 million.

In 2013, Vick’s base salary is $16.5 million, but it has a $1 million de-escalator, which would drop the salary to $15.5 million.  (The specific event that would drop his salary isn’t known.)  Only $3 million of the amount is guaranteed, for injury only.  The cap number is $16.9 million.

For 2014, Vick’s base salary of $12.5 million can escalate to $15 million.  He also has a $3 million roster bonus, and a cap number of $19.4 million.

For 2015, Vick has a base salary of $14.5 million, with a roster bonus of $2 million.  The cap number is $17.9 million.

After year two, when all of the fully guaranteed money has been paid, it will be easy for the Eagles to walk away.  In 2013, they’d take a pre-June 1 cap hit of $4.2 million.  In 2014, the pre-June 1 cap hit would be $2.8 million.  After June 1, they’d split a $1.4 million cap charge over 2014 and 2015.

The deal essentially guarantees Vick the franchise tag amount for 2011, 2012, and a slice of 2013 (injury only), with no real guarantees beyond that.

Vick, like Fitzgerald, will not see the end of his deal.

Amazing… All this for a man that puts house pets into a pit with traineded pitbull killers, and listened to them scream while being killed!

This is getting to be more info than we need, I think. Reminds me of the guy who made the Bang! Cartoon back when Vick was a Falcon still, called “Mike Vick Takes A Crap.” TMI.

    another great signing …

by “the Smartest Front Office” in the NFL.

  5. ajknox88 says: Aug 30, 2011 8:53 PM

Looks like the Eagles did a good job structuring the deal to get rid of Vick once his athleticism slows down a bit.

  6. nfceastisbeast says: Aug 30, 2011 8:56 PM

I knew it would be ‘team friendly’ when all of the details came out. Nobody crafts a contract like Joe Banner. Thats why the Eagles have been able to sign all of those free agents, they saw this year coming three years ago and planned accordingly. They haven’t won it all yet, but they “put themselves in position to” every year which is more than about 26 other teams can say. He could straighten out the U.S. economy by himself!

  7. dawkinseffect says: Aug 30, 2011 8:56 PM

so that puts the birds with around 4 million under the cap. that should be enough to resign Jackson and maybe someone on the Oline who can block

Just for the record I made this call on the first post about Vicks contract when everybody was hung up on 6 years and $100 million. Andy Reid will have a replacement in the wings in two seasons time. If Vick is worth it he will keep getting paid. If he regresses he gets cut for a $4 million cap hit. Great deal for both parties.

Seriously, how much more articles can those at PFT spin out of Vick’s new contract? Oh my gosh.

Are fans this much interested in detail attached to the contract or is it being down to bring out the usual Mike Vick haters.

  17. sadskinsfan89 says: Aug 30, 2011 9:14 PM

Does pft edit anything they post? Article says in 2015 Vick has a roster bonus of 14.5. Which can’t be. The very next sentence reads vick has roster bonus of 2 million. That makes zero sense

  21. ipeefreelyagain says: Aug 30, 2011 9:19 PM

He’ll be looking for a new team by 2013. He’s a one-trick pony that good teams figure out.

Let’s just say he’s be as effective as the Wild-Cat formation this year.

  22. vikescry1 says: Aug 30, 2011 9:23 PM

  24. Fan On Fire_Maurice Barksdale says: Aug 30, 2011 9:23 PM

  28. itsmammoth says: Aug 30, 2011 9:35 PM

Well, if you subtract the 2 .8 million from the 1.2 million… you can figure that the astronomic, infrastructural, economic dividends will come out quite nicely. Fact is, if you take the quantum leap theory and divide it by two dead dogs and a bowl of water… you get O0o0NE Michael Vick. It’s simple math.

  29. madamschefter says: Aug 30, 2011 9:37 PM

Good for him. I’m not saying what he did, in regards to dog fighting, was right but he served his time and came back a better person, athlete, and QB. Glad to see he can now pay off the debts he owes to the Falcons and others.

  30. vikescry1 says: Aug 30, 2011 9:37 PM

brady, manning, brees, rodgers, rivers, big ben. I would want anyone of theses qb’s on my team before vick. you could possibly even throw in matt ryan too. don’t get me wrong, big vick fans will probably bash me, but i just think these other qb’s are better and IMO worth more. vick is an electrifying player fun to watch and had a really good season last year. but it was one year, he also lost in the playoffs, and has never won a superbowl?

  31. greengob1in says: Aug 30, 2011 9:40 PM

    Big eagle fan here…

Not a big Vick fan, but I love my Eagles so…

What people don’t understand, besides on the field stuff…I agree he’s top 10…not top 5 Qb’s

But as a marquee…STAR player…what does his jersey sale rank?

He brings the bank…people love/hate him, rarely in between.

If the league took a poll…of the players…

    Who’s your favorite player?

    Landslide victory for M. Vick.

He will make the Iggs hundreds of millions…in the 3 years he remains on the team.

Will he bring a Lombardi trophy?

    I don’t know…I sure hope so…he has the skills…the coaching…the “supporting cast”…

This is a good deal for both the Iggs…AND Starship7.

Truthfully, love ‘em or hate ‘em, you gotta respect how the Eagles sign a guy to a “longer” term contract AND still create more cap space………it just boggles the mind. Why can’t every team do this?!?

Well Vox, is Romo worth the 30 million GUARANTEED he got paid four years ago? You’re a blind sycophant homer ( which we already know) if you think so.

Let’s play the “Vox Qualifer” game, where all the points made in a post has a qualifying statement that only fits HIS point, shall we?

Is Romo even worth the 9 million in base salary he will be paid this (and next) season after a 1-7 start last year and now injuries are starting to effect his availability?

How many division titles have the Cowboys had with Romo’s five years as a starter? Two? That’s one more than Vick, IN HIS FIRST YEAR as a starter.

Exactly! As an Eagles fan, even I’m getting a little tired of Vick-related stories.

But it doesn’t change the fact that an Eagles story on PFT gets about 40 posts from Eagles fans and people who want to talk football, and 60+ posts from people who want to fill their tiny, pathetic lives with hatred for one city, team or individual.

McNabb is a far better player than Tony Romo, going by the metric you’re setting in other posts that playoff victories are a measure of QB skill in the absence of a SB victory.

(and now here comes the cherry-picked regular season Romo stats).

  72. zeussuperman says: Aug 31, 2011 2:27 PM

Also, Vick increases jersey sales outside of the greater Philadelphia area. Consider Atlanta, where he’s still beloved (as evidenced by the last time he was away in ATL as an Eagle, and more people were cheering for him to score a TD than their own team to win).

People all over the country love Vick. Look at a poll of most current football players, who hail from all over the U.S. — they all say that Vick was one of their favorite players growing up.

  73. exeaglefan says: Aug 31, 2011 9:25 PM

    typicaleaglesfan,
Anyone who believes Vick has changed is a fool. He only cares about getting back fame and big bucks. And if you knew the definition of a sociopath you would understand why going to prison for two years isnt going to change him one bit. He believes he is above the law and has no morals or sense of right and wrong, He will lie cheat steal to get what he wants.
