Roy Williams promises “magic” in Bears’ passing game

Chicago Bears Training Camp Getty Images

Roy Williams is facing heavy criticism in Chicago for dropped passes and overall shoddy play in the preseason, and he may lose his spot in the starting offense.

But he hasn’t lost his confidence.

Williams said he and Bears quarterback Jay Cutler are working on their chemistry and will be a great pass-catch combination this season.

It’s getting there,” Williams said, via John Mullin of CSNChicago.com. “It’s not day one, it’s not day 365 but we’re getting there. And one day it’ll be magic.”

The problem for the Bears is that they want Williams to be a major contributor to their offense from Day One, not just “one day.” And Day One of the regular season is less than two weeks away. Williams needs to show off some of that magic soon.

“magic”=getting in shape and actually catching the ball

  4. descendency says: Aug 30, 2011 10:16 AM

Is “one day” the day after you are cut?

  5. dexmorgan32 says: Aug 30, 2011 10:16 AM

I sense 6-10 for the Bears.

  6. happybunnyj says: Aug 30, 2011 10:17 AM

Yes, you will continue to disappear!

(that was too easy of a setup, Roy).

    Disappearing act?

  8. beckzhere says: Aug 30, 2011 10:18 AM

He will not be a starter come week 1. Knox is twice the reciever Williams is and should rightfully get the start ahead of him.

  9. c1d7 says: Aug 30, 2011 10:18 AM

Can he perform magic for their offensive line…

  12. dragynj says: Aug 30, 2011 10:20 AM

What kind of magic? If it’s the Incredible Ball Dropping guy or a Disappearing act I’d believe it.

  13. thereisalwaysnextyear says: Aug 30, 2011 10:20 AM

    It’s not magic, it’s delusion

  14. westmantooth says: Aug 30, 2011 10:20 AM

  18. kd75 says: Aug 30, 2011 10:22 AM

By “magic” I assume he means making a 6 foot 4 220lb WR disappear for three hours every Sunday.

Roy Williams is the anti christ

Business as usual for Roy. Why is this guy still around?

  25. kestagg says: Aug 30, 2011 10:33 AM

roy dropped the ‘crystal’ ball … familiar

  26. Land Snark says: Aug 30, 2011 10:34 AM

    Talk about being late.

I had the whole “disappearing behind the opposition’s secondary.”

But I was beat to the punch. Sort of like Roy off the line of scrimmage.

  27. nflsucker says: Aug 30, 2011 10:35 AM

Roy kept promising he’d get it in gear in Dallas, too. Confidence isn’t confidence when it’s essentially delusional. The guy is a mediocre receiver at best. They should just cut him and pick up some young guy with real drive to succeed.

  28. duece5 says: Aug 30, 2011 10:38 AM

This is from the same guy that thought the cowgirls would run the table last year when they were like 1-6 and win the division and make the playoff.

    Hey Roy, quit waiting!!!

My guess is he won’t have to wait long to see his pink slip and is released before week1.

  29. dfwbillsfan14221 says: Aug 30, 2011 10:39 AM

His stats would benefit greatly if he could pull a football out of his hat instead of having to catch it in the air… ZING!

  30. frankrizzo51 says: Aug 30, 2011 10:41 AM

Is he that clueless or that arrogant?

  31. suckittrebek76 says: Aug 30, 2011 10:41 AM

    This weekend you won’t

  32. mvp43 says: Aug 30, 2011 10:42 AM

  33. lacharger2112 says: Aug 30, 2011 10:43 AM

My favorite trick of his is how he can take a football thrown from Jay Cutler and magically have it on the ground by it just hitting his hands!

  36. gixrider says: Aug 30, 2011 10:46 AM

Starting to think Dez didn’t want to carry his pads because he thought Roy was a bum…not because he had a problem carrying a vets pads. He probably thought “carry Wittens pads sure, this bum? Never”. lol!

  37. thejuddstir says: Aug 30, 2011 10:52 AM

Apparently Roy Williams graduated with the same B.S. degree that Rex Ryan did!!

  38. drshankenstein says: Aug 30, 2011 10:58 AM

  40. fcs34 says: Aug 30, 2011 11:07 AM

His entire career has been a magic illusion worthy of Copperfield. How else can you explain a reciever who doesn’t catch balls yet continues to play in the nfl?

  41. sfkforever says: Aug 30, 2011 11:10 AM

    a magical season!!! 5-11

  42. simplesimon1 says: Aug 30, 2011 11:17 AM

Roy Williams and magic….. Pull a rabbit out of your hat after you put it in a pillow case and beat it with a hammer? Sounds about right then

  43. happybunnyj says: Aug 30, 2011 11:21 AM

Bears fans I can warn you that this guy will continue to talk about “getting on the same page,” “developing chemistry,” “learning each other,” etc. w/Cutler for as long as he’s there.

    It will NEVER HAPPEN!

You better pray your GM realizes this and cuts his losses ASAP. At least he wasn’t dumb enough to give up a king’s ransom and contract like the idiot we have for a GM.

  44. mrplow3 says: Aug 30, 2011 11:25 AM

    Downrated incoming:

I actually think Roy Williams will………….wait for it………….have a decent year.

Now don’t get me wrong, he won’t be Fitz or AJ but I could see a decent 800 yards with 7 TDs type of year. Keep in mind the last good season he had was with Martz.

    -ducks-

  45. trimgod69 says: Aug 30, 2011 11:25 AM

I’LL NEVER UNDERSTAND WHAT ANGELLO SAW IN THIS CLOWN IN THE FIRST PLACE. THEY BOTH NEED TO DISAPPEAR!

  46. pigskinswag says: Aug 30, 2011 11:27 AM

I could go and find a handful of times Roy has said this same type of statement, then just had another bust season. But Id hate to spend anymore time then what ive just read on this joke.

  50. jimmysee says: Aug 30, 2011 11:34 AM

It’s going to take magic — as in abra-cadabra here’s a touchdown — for those guys to get anything done this season.

  51. kennyrogerschicken says: Aug 30, 2011 11:39 AM

  53. rboyett says: Aug 30, 2011 11:43 AM

  54. ocho says: Aug 30, 2011 11:48 AM

  55. myopinionisrighterthanyours says: Aug 30, 2011 11:50 AM

I believe Roy. From what I’ve heard of the Bears preseason games, he’s had no problem disappearing, same as he did in Dallas.

  56. richm2256 says: Aug 30, 2011 11:55 AM

Dude just doesn’t get it …..
if he doesn’t stop sucking, there isn’t going to BE a “one day”.

The time to start, you know, catching passes, is NOW, Roy.

  57. m2karateman says: Aug 30, 2011 11:59 AM

Why is Roy still talking? Why are reporters still talking TO him?

I don’t know what’s funnier…Roy and all his “blah, blah, blah” or the Bears fans who were talking trash when they first signed Roy and thought he would be good for their offense.

  58. trollhammer20 says: Aug 30, 2011 12:01 PM

If I underperform at my job, I’ll be fired.

Roy Williams consistently underperforms at his job, and continually gets people to hand him millions of dollars a year.

There’s some serious voodoo going on, all right.

  59. pigskinswag says: Aug 30, 2011 12:11 PM

Roy E. Williams’ third magic trick (his first magic trick was magically turning his hands into STONE, his second was magically making millions of Jerry Jones’ dollars and draft picks disappear) will be him pulling his head out of his own @$$.

  60. zaggs says: Aug 30, 2011 12:21 PM

Hey Bear Fans: Welcome to the NFL Magic Show called “My name is Roy Williams!” Watch as he hypnotisis you to sleep with his BS talk…Be amazed at his lackluster performance on the field…Be in Wowed as he finally catches a 2 yard pass for a first down and raise his hand to point forward to let your know he did it all by himself!!! Then at the end of the show listen to how he tells the press that he really feels he’s making a connection with Cutler and they will be the NFL’s best pitch and catch duo that will unseat Montana and Rice!!….Make sure you check your wallets…the Bears just stole money from you….GO LIONS!!!

  64. kalispellmt says: Aug 30, 2011 12:52 PM

This guy will have a good year. He’s back with Martz, and his college coach is there as well. And he needs to have a good year for any chance of a decent contract, or maybe just to stay in the league.

  65. darocnessmonsta says: Aug 30, 2011 12:54 PM

  66. ajknox88 says: Aug 30, 2011 1:00 PM

…and on that topic, can we sign a legit #1 WR please?

  71. krashie21 says: Aug 30, 2011 1:14 PM

I can’t believe all of the HATERS on this topic!

Since he left Detroit, he’s DISAPPEARED!!!!!

  72. localbandhero says: Aug 30, 2011 1:18 PM

He means catching the ball within 2 minutes of winning and instead of going down he gets stripped and allows the Saints to come back and win on Thanksgiving.

I hate this guy. At least T.O. could put up decent (even good) numbers. This punk should have been carrying Dez’s pads.

    Wow, that hurt…..

I guess we shouldn’t bring up Cedric Benson, Rex Grossman, Michael Haynes, Chris Williams, Marc Columbo, David Terrell, Cade McNown or Curtis Enis then, huh? Because Lord knows, the Bears have spent more than their fair share of money on BUSTS. At least the Lions got a couple decent years out of Roy, then fleeced Dallas for some picks.

What did Chicago get in return for ANY of those guys?

    Yeah…that’s what I thought.

What an idiotic thing to say. As soon as we got rid of the moron that drafted him our current GM traded this idiot for a 1st and 3rd. At least our current GM didn’t use a 2nd rounder on a dead guy(Gaines Adams) when they traded away there 1st rounder the same year. Lions will be 2-0 against the bottom dwelling Bears this year.

  86. m2karateman says: Aug 30, 2011 3:12 PM

    @philtration

Oh…..and how’s that $6M backup center working out for you? That is, after your GM let your best o-lineman and starting center walk over half a million while the team is about 30 million under the cap?

So, to sum it up, your team wouldn’t pay Kreutz an extra half million, but turn around and sign a backup for six million. Boy, there’s a smart move.

  87. everlong016 says: Aug 30, 2011 3:20 PM

  88. dd393 says: Aug 30, 2011 7:48 PM

  89. coolj23 says: Aug 30, 2011 7:51 PM

I would still start Roy because he would still garner attention from a starting corner, then I bring in Knox as a third receiver, that way you have cover one of the fastest receivers in the NFL with a safety or nickel. Just a thought, any opinions welcomed.
