Drew Brees in contract talks with Saints

People Ellen DeGeneres AP

Sean Payton half-joked on PFT Live Tuesday that he’d be in New Orleans as long as Drew Brees stayed there.

The Saints are working to make sure Brees is there a very long time.

Brees confirmed to the New Orleans Times-Picayune that his agent and the Saints are in “ongoing” discussions about a new deal. Brees couldn’t help but notice Michael Vick’s contract.

“I did see it,” Brees said. “It looks like a nice contract. Obviously I don’t know any of the details other than the six years and $100 million.”

If Brees kept up on his PFT reading, he would know it’s not really a $100 million deal.  We’d guess that Brees will get a contract somewhere above Vick’s contract, but below Peyton Manning’s recent deal.

I’d settle for a contract somewhere between Vick’s and Mannings, myself. Shoot, even 60 million would be okay.

Wonder what a Qb whose actually won a SB, brought together a city instead of dividing it and has been consistant on and off the field is worth?

  3. kayotiicdat says: Aug 31, 2011 10:50 AM

This better be more guaranteed money than Vick… Pay the man, he deserves it, he’s done so much for New Orleans.

  4. goawayeverybody says: Aug 31, 2011 10:51 AM

How about 5 years, $75 million with $50 million guaranteed?

  5. celtks says: Aug 31, 2011 10:52 AM

He’s a smart guy, it’s better to repeat the media line on the contract worth – the more the merrier for Brees.

  6. bayoubauer says: Aug 31, 2011 10:53 AM

Good. He deserves it. More so than Vick, i would say.

  7. jimmysee says: Aug 31, 2011 10:55 AM

Aaron Rodgers is probably watching this with interest.

Thumbs up if you lost respect for Brees during the lockout………

Really went out on a limb with that last statement.

“He lost my respect…I no longer respect him…blah blah blah…”

I wonder if Drew Brees actually cares…probably not.

    mvp43 your comment is so yesterday’s news…..

    get over yourself.

  15. mdd913 says: Aug 31, 2011 11:21 AM

As if Drew Brees really gives two craps about the respect of some pathetic message board warriors who are just bitter because the Saints whooped their team.

Now HERE is a player who deserves a big pay day. Whatever he gets, he’s worth it.

  18. annnann says: Aug 31, 2011 11:31 AM

He deserves to get paid. Maybe some have lost respect for him as a person during the lockout but his play on the field as a quarterback can’t be overlooked. He means a lot to the team and his efforts to help the community means a lot to the city as well.

Not a Saints fan but Drew appears to be the real deal….he’s both talented AND a class act…most of the posters on here would LOVE to have him on there team and you all know it.

  22. pigskinswag says: Aug 31, 2011 11:38 AM

We Believe In Breesus. If he wants you to give him the entire French Quarter, do it.

  23. hobartbaker says: Aug 31, 2011 11:40 AM

Vick and Brees have been in the league 10 years at least, and they’re both still too short.

  24. brintfatre says: Aug 31, 2011 11:41 AM

Better QB than both Mannings and Vick combined!

Brees…very good QB that’s done alot for the league. If he deserves a payday I’d say give him one…

    Tebow, your thoughts?

Brees and Aaron Rodgers need new contracts.

  31. CKL says: Aug 31, 2011 12:59 PM

Oh he’ll definitely get Brady/Manning money. He has the same agent as Manning does for one.

  32. kingmj4891 says: Aug 31, 2011 1:20 PM

Brees is a system quarterback in NO. He is no Brady, Manning, Rodgers.

Saints gonna deal out a huge contract and then regret it.

  33. ilovefoolsball says: Aug 31, 2011 2:20 PM

all you pansies talkin about “oh I lost all respect for him” during the lockout hahaha. Your self-importance is laughable! WHy do you even bother mentioning this irrelevant fact that no one cares about. While you’re at it, why don’t you tell us..
-what your cat ate for breakfast this morning
-your feelings on the Iraq war
-what you think you’ll do when you get out of bed at 3pm tomorrow afternoon
-what level of experience you’ve reached on call of duty
    -your superbowl picks
-what your (make believe) girlfriend looks like

Now back on topic, Brees is a top caliber quarterback and anyone who doesn’t think so, doesn’t know football. This guy would get tons of pub if he were playing in NY, Chicago, or Dallas, it just so happens he’s in a small market team like N.O. but without the winning history of GB. If you think that he sucks and isn’t worth a top tier contract then you must have Brady, P Manning or Rodgers on your team because I can’t see putting any other quarterback even in the discussion of comparison with Brees.
Rivers would be the closest but he hasn’t done anything notable.
    Bradford? Too young.
Ryan? Hasn’t won any ice or even gotten close, he’s young.
E Manning? Serviceable, yes, elite, no.
Freeman? Stupid haircut will hold him back.
Vick? hasn’t won the big game, hasn’t been successful over a long period of time in Philly.
Cutler? don’t try to be funny.
Romo? I said don’t try to be funny.
Schaub? Too streaky thus far but we’ll see.

  34. hpeters77 says: Aug 31, 2011 2:43 PM

I love Brees, but there is no need to hate on Vick. Everyone has their own contract, when you go to work your salary is set upon you and your boss. Brees go ahead and make that money, and Vick do your thing, dont worry about the haters

Spoken like a true idiot who has never watched a down of football. How is Drew Brees a “system quarterback”? Is that what he is because his team passes the ball often? So by your idiotic retard logic the three quarterbacks that you say that Brees is NOT comparable to are also system quarterbacks. I would go further and engage you in a battle of wits, but it is clear that you are unarmed.

    —————————————————————-

Now, this is at least the dumbest comment I’ve read all day, and on PFT that is saying something.

For one, Brees is the most accurate deep-ball passer in the NFL over the last 5 years. And that’s a fact. He’s given careers to Robert “I can only run fly patterns” Meachem and Devery “I can only fly patterns and square-ins” Henderson.

Does that sound like a “system” quarterback to you? This is not exactly Kyle Orton we’re talking about here.

  38. theharshestreality says: Aug 31, 2011 3:16 PM

This should be interesting – if Vick can get $100MM then Brees will break the bank. Not hating on Vick but there is really no comparison between the two. Vick is a criminal, is injury prone and finally, is an inconsistent winner. Brees is the face of the franchise – and he’s a great player and a decent guy. Using the immortal words of Teddy KGB – Pay the man his money!

  39. wcdunkenfield says: Aug 31, 2011 3:25 PM

    Give Drew his money!

(Now, can we all just get back to ragging on Cutler and Rivers? That so much more fun than trying to come up with something bad to say about Brees…)

  40. managod777 says: Aug 31, 2011 4:13 PM

Brady, Manning, Brees, Rogers…who’s the next to win a SB? Include Roethlisberger and Vick, too.
