Calling Michael Crabtree a bust is absurd. Vernon Davis was just as obnoxious (if not more so) and way worse in the passing game at this point in his career. I’m not saying Crabtree will be fantastic, or definitely wont be a bust, but labeling him a bus this early is just short-sighted.

I have been hearing that from Niner fans for years now, so I just say, “Do something first before you tell us how great you’re going to be.” The owners have specialized in having inexperienced GMs or no GM’s at all, resulting in busted #1 picks Kwame Harris (2003), Rashaun Woods (2004), Alex Smith (2005), Manny Lawson (2006), Kentwan Balmer (2008), Michael Crabtree (2009) and Taylor Mays (#2 in 2010, for crying out loud). The common denominator in all these draft picks? The Yorks.

I like Hunter but Glen Coffee and Anthony Dixon were supposed to be the second coming, as well. Spencer Tillman used to dominate preseason games, too.

This year’s challenges: No QB, o-line has holes and no depth, little defensive depth, very weak corners.

The good news: Verno, Willis, Gore (when healthy), Justin Smith, Whitner, Iupati. I also think Edwards is a massive upgrade over Crabtree, but Alex won’t deliver the ball nearly well enough.

Balke and the new regime has made solid decisions since they have taken over. Kendal Hunter, Chris Culliver, Iupati, Aldon Smith. I can continue.

Shored up the weakest link on defense – the pass coverage and a pass rush.

Amazing how the York Niner seem to have a talent for turning 2nd round picks into 7th round picks. The guy made a few big hits that got a lot of press, but more often, he was getting burnt from being out of position, drawing a personal foul for a late hit, or just bouncing off the receiver to give up a big play.

Golden Tate beat him for two TDs in their final USC-ND game. In both cases, Mays was so intent on going for the lights-out hit he didn’t even try to make a play on the ball.

He may be a serviceable back-up and special teamer, but to expect greatness out of him is a serious, serious stretch.

I am rolling in tears here just thinking of a Bengals fan desperately trying to win this argument.

And I guarantee Mays makes the roster. The Bengals are treating this as a developmental prospect. He’s not expected to start. That would be Reggie Nelson. The guy everyone said was washed up in Jacksonville and made fun of Cincy for trading for him. Then he came in and sat behind the first string while working with Zimmer & the secondary coaches. And when Nelson finished the season as a starter he started to blossom and has begun to look like the guy that was drafted in the 1st round. Sometimes these teams give up on guys because the transition is slow. And sometimes other teams coaches fail to develop talent. I like Mike Zimmer’s track record of turning other teams trash into his treasure.

The Bengals suck.

The rest of us will have to bide our time watching real football teams have real chances at winning something meaningful. Like a game or two. Or a division title, or two. Or three. Or four. Or five. And a playoff win. Or two. Or three. And a Super Bowl win. Or two. Or three. Or more.
