Bucs’ Mike Williams: “We’re guaranteeing the playoffs”

Getty Images

After a three-year absence from the postseason, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are feeling confident that they’ll be in the playoffs this year.

For Bucs wide receiver Mike Williams, it extends beyond confidence to a promise: He says they’re making the playoffs, period.

We’re a young team, but we’re guaranteeing the playoffs,” Williams said, via Jeff Darlington of McClatchy Newspapers.

The youth Williams references is one of the biggest reasons to be optimistic about Tampa Bay’s chances: The Bucs were 10-6 last year on a roster whose top players are mostly young and still getting better.

The problem with youth is that sometimes young players don’t understand that it’s generally best to actually get to the playoffs first and hold off on the guarantees.

    Playoffs?Playoffs? You kidding me…

  2. kmurph1226 says: Sep 1, 2011 7:21 PM

NFC West? Yes. NFC South? No way. Falcons and Saints will both make the playoffs and either the Cowboys/Giants/Lions/Bears will get that other wildcard spot.

Not your fault, Mike. You’re owners just feel like leaving $20 million of unused cap and not bringing in another impact player.

  3. touchdownroddywhite says: Sep 1, 2011 7:21 PM

Not happening. They had too much work to do that didn’t get done with the lockout, and as I said in reference to the parity thread, 3 teams in one division hitting the play off is rare, if not unheard of.

  4. tfbuckfutter says: Sep 1, 2011 7:22 PM

    I’m guaranteeing the playoffs too.

Doesn’t mean I’ll be playing in them. I just guarantee they happen.

  5. ajc85 says: Sep 1, 2011 7:22 PM

they went 10-6 on a schedule that was softer than my pillow. he’s young. he’ll learn.

  6. gosuhgo says: Sep 1, 2011 7:23 PM

It’ll be even tougher after suffering another loss to Detroit.

“he problem with youth is that sometimes young players don’t understand that it’s generally best to actually get to the playoffs first and hold off on the guarantees.”

if i recall Joe Namath proclaimed that his team would win the SB. and he was 26 when he said that. Whats wrong with Mike Williams saying his team will make the playoffs at age 24?

  8. visible4 says: Sep 1, 2011 7:27 PM

He can’t be serious. They had a bunch of wins against sub 500 teams and then when the playoffs were on the line the Lions come to their home field and beat them with the THIRD STRING quarterback.

  9. fanoredsox says: Sep 1, 2011 7:27 PM

WOW! I thought all players had learned (by now) that they were not Joe Namath! Well thanks for the heads up, now I know to bet against you every week. There are way too many good and great teams for you to make that announcement!

  10. tampajoey says: Sep 1, 2011 7:27 PM

Big deal. Rex Ryan has been guaranteeing a Super Bowl for the Jets for like 10 years now.

  11. raideralex99 says: Sep 1, 2011 7:28 PM

lol … it took them 17 weeks to finally beat a team over .500 last year … does he think the are going to get another easy schedule?

  12. silvercrush says: Sep 1, 2011 7:28 PM

    cool story bro

  14. realfootballfan says: Sep 1, 2011 7:32 PM

I like the Bucs and their overachiever story from last year, but I think they might be in for a crash landing this year.

Freeman hasn’t looked as sharp as I’d expected this pre-season, and they still look shotty in run defense.

  15. jdandcoke says: Sep 1, 2011 7:36 PM

you need to add the overhyped eagles to that list. why, after seeing their mess of an o-line, anyone is assuming that the eagles are a playoff lock is a mystery to me. also….the lions? they may wind up, aside from the eagles of course, as being the most over-hyped team of 2011. i think they have a very bright future like most people do….but lets calm down a little bit.

Ahh to be young and dumb again and know what I know now. Wait , then I would not be so dumb.
With youth nothing seems impossible . You are fearless. So let’s just hope Mike has not put his foot in his mouth because he is going to need both feet on the ground and running to help make good on his “guarantee”. GO BUCS!

  18. beastofeden says: Sep 1, 2011 7:43 PM

I know Atlanta is getting a lot of deserved preseason love but they better not get caught with their pants down because the Tampa Bay youth movement will blow right past them.

  22. ajknox88 says: Sep 1, 2011 8:11 PM

i like the bucs, but i have to believe they wont have the same success as last year. the schedule will be a bit more difficult this year

  23. firstand4ever says: Sep 1, 2011 8:16 PM

I gotta say that I love the confidence. The Bucs got nothing to lose by being brash.

It’s not out of the realm of possibility that 3 playoff teams could come out of the NFC South. (Saints, Falcons and Bucs).

I am of the opinion that The Bucs may be a better team in 2011 than they were in 2010 and they may still not match their 10 and 6 record from a year ago. No matter how the year shakes out. The Bucs have a bright future ahead of them and a strong foundation in place with Raheem and Freeman.

The bucs beat who they were supposed to beat and they lost to the + .500 clubs by a touchdown or less so stop hating haters. Oh and everyone who talks s$&t on here must know everything about football right? Well then u would know the refs GAVE that game to the Lions and the NFL acknowledges that it was a catch and messed which case coincidentally gave the PACKERS a playoff berth and an undeserved championship.

  33. rjpie says: Sep 1, 2011 10:35 PM

  34. peopletrains says: Sep 1, 2011 10:36 PM

Bucs are on the rise but no playoffs this year… they pulled out a lot of wins at the end of games last season and those sort of results rarely carry over from year to year.

  35. kevinbobrow says: Sep 1, 2011 10:45 PM

What is funny about this guarantee is that of all the starting positions, WR may have the least control over whether the team wins or not. Still, I guess he is speaking on behalf of the team. I like the confidence, but I think it puts an unnecessary target on the Bucs’ backs. Just go out and play!

On another Bucs note, see our take on this year’s LeGarrette Blount at

  36. snookau says: Sep 1, 2011 10:48 PM

I love to see people make fun of a player’s guarantee… yet in the same breath pretty much guarantee that it’ll be the Saints and Falcons atop the division. Sorry, there’s no guarantees in the NFL. That works both ways.

As for the “they played a weak schedule last year” line… Hey, morons, the Saints and Falcons played the same schedule with the exception of 2 games. Take away the Bucs games, and the Falcons only had 3 of their 13 wins against teams with winning records. 8 of their wins were against teams with a combined record of 38-90, Not that impressive, either. Especially when you seal it all with the “shat the bed” performance in the playoffs. AT HOME.

The Falcons are weak. Matty “I only average 6.5 yards per attempt” is overrated. And only an idiot GM trade 5 picks and takes his #2 WR with the 6th overall pick. And can the Falcons show everyone anymore how weak their defense is? Signing every free agent safety who can fog a mirror is pretty much showing the NFL what we already know. Your defense is SUSPECT. Ask Aaron Rodgers.

As for the Saints… same deal. Only 3 wins out of 11 were against teams with winning records. But I have respect for the Saints. At least they’ve won something.

Lesson is… don’t take shots at other teams schedules because you heard it regurgitated on ESPN 150 times. Take a look at your own schedule first.

It still boggles my mind that idiots who call themselves fans don’t realize that teams within the same division play the same schedule other than 2 games.

Oh… one more thing… Lions fans talking trash? Really? Bring your porcelain QB down to Tampa next weekend. You’ll be lucky to get 8 starts out of softy Stafford this season.

You have ONE playoff win in the last 50+ years. That’s a JOKE. Just like your franchise.

  37. snookau says: Sep 1, 2011 10:50 PM

“Freeman is a joke of a QB compared to a healthy Stafford”

Who is “healthy Stafford”? Never heard of him. Does that guy even exist? You should have him arrested for STEALING paychecks the last 2 seasons.

Freeman has more WINS than Stafford has starts. Enough said.

  38. david7590 says: Sep 1, 2011 10:53 PM

The Jets were already in the Super Bowl went Joe guaranteed they would win. He said that like two days before the game.

Scoreboard, chump. And nobody including Lions fans want to hear about how the refs screwed you over. Child, please. Fairley in a walking boot is scarier than McCoy.

  41. packerfan1000 says: Sep 1, 2011 11:34 PM

Wow, Lions fans. You’re not there yet, don’t talk like you are. But more importantly, if you do get there (you’ve got the talent to get there), take a page out of the only worth while player you’ve ever had, and act like you have been there before (even if you haven’t).

  42. finerdetailz says: Sep 1, 2011 11:59 PM

Yeah loser Lion fan has room to talk smack!! That’s frigin hilarious… The only way you beat us last year when we were on our 3rd string cornerback. The only way you won was by an admitted blown call by the refs. Big talk from loser fans for a team that has never won a Suberbowl has the distinction of going 0-16 not long ago and can’t remember the last time they made the playoffs. As far as soft look no further than your QB that gets hurt if someone looks at him too hard. Remember this stat.. You went 4-0 in your preseason that you went 0-16… Bucs will throttle your ass week 1.. I guarantee that!! And Freeman is 10 times better than Stafford. It might be a little less if the dude makes it thru 16 games which is unlikely.. As far as your talent which I believe you have but it only took you 20 years of drafting in the top 3 spots to finally luck out on 3 good picks..

  43. bucsballer says: Sep 2, 2011 12:22 AM

Rlly stafford better than Freeman? Saying Williams is dumb for saying this is almost as dumb as the guy saying stafford= healthy, call me wen ur franchise realizes that stafford is made of glass and can’t make it past like 4 games. Freeman will drop stafford even with a broken leg

  44. majorseahawk says: Sep 2, 2011 12:27 AM

Hey I believe his guarantee. There will be playoffs this year, however the Buccs won’t be a part of them. LOL! They’d be lucky to finish with 8 wins, they won’t have such an easy schedule two years in a row. That Choker QB of theirs can’t play against ANY good team or game that matters, so overrated.

  45. leeeroooyjeeenkiiins says: Sep 2, 2011 12:27 AM

I’m okay with people writing in the Saints(although anyone but the Patriots in this league is a risky pick to bet all your chips on), because they’ve at least been there and done that. They’ve proven themselves, and they deserve the respect.

The Falcons? They’re good and they have a lot of potential, but writing them in as a playoff lock? LOL. No one’s a lock in this league, especially not a team that got ravaged in the playoffs last season, hasn’t won anything of significance ever, and just traded half their draft for a #2 WR with a case of the dropsies. They may be favored over the Bucs, but to act as though they’ve already punched their tickets to the playoffs is laughable. Particularly in the most up and down, unpredictable division in the NFL.

  46. sadskinsfan89 says: Sep 2, 2011 12:41 AM

  47. greengob1in says: Sep 2, 2011 12:56 AM

  48. chace1986 says: Sep 2, 2011 1:02 AM

What is it with Lions fans? Why do they have such a chip on thier shoulder when the Bucs are mentioned…?…I mean seriously. Freeman vs. Stafford is rediculous…there is no comparing a Freeman who has more wins that Stafford has starts…could Stafford be as good as Freeman…sure..why not…but to say he is better…that just idiotic. I would be fine with the Bucs going 1-15 at this point….just beat the snot out of the Lions and deflate the “restore the roar” movement. Lions fans suck.

  49. snookau says: Sep 2, 2011 1:06 AM

“And nobody including Lions fans want to hear about how the refs screwed you over.”

I didn’t say anything about the refs in that game. Just the fact YOU brought that up speaks volumes. Oh and the apology letter from the NFL to the Bucs was pretty telling as well.

Keep running your mouth, Lions fan. I guess football is the only hope you’ve got in that horrible city of yours. Does anyone actually still live in Detroit?

Suh is a punk. You can have him. He’ll rot in that city like all the other good players ever drafted there. All 3 of them. Matt Millen says hi.

  50. snookau says: Sep 2, 2011 1:08 AM

Are you illiterate? That was not his gaurantee. And how is Josh Freeman a choker? The guy has 7 game winning drives in only 26 starts. (it would have been 2 more but the 2009 defense was so shoddy that it blew the dolphins and falcons games with virtually no time on the clock)I believe this is more than Whitehurst and jackson combined. You, sir, are a clown.

  58. bucwild05 says: Sep 2, 2011 7:48 PM

As a Bucs fan, yes, I can see them making the playoffs, a guarantee of it, no. There are a lot of good NFC teams, and the schedule is not going to be kind. It depends on the Saints and Falcons. I believe the Bucs are going to beat the Saints this year in both games, I don’t really see anything special there in New Orleans besides Brees. If the Defense can stop Atalanta, then they will make it. The Bucs have Talib, and Jackson is coming back… that will help them get by Atlanta.

It’s going to be an exciting year this year… but, I wouldn’t Guarantee a play off appearance just yet.

And the Lions couldn’t score 38 points in three games combined on the Buccaneers.

Reality check is coming big time for your sorry azz team.

  60. dannano says: Sep 3, 2011 5:29 PM

Got to love the Lions fans coming in here and saying that the Lions will win week 1 by 30+ points.

I sure when the Bucs win week 1 that the Lions fans will magically disappear for about a week and then come back to blame the refs or something.

  61. bucsfan420 says: Sep 4, 2011 1:21 PM

I cant see Stafford getting through week one uninjured. This guy is made of paper mache, ALWAYS hurt, still hasn’t made it through a season without IR and this year is not going to be any differant and lion fan is scared to death of it.
Watch your back Matty, this young D-line here in Tampa is getting to the QB like its 1999 again.

BTW, is it just me or does Stafford look like Jay Cutler’s little brother with a learning disability?

  62. freemanmvp says: Sep 4, 2011 1:39 PM

LOL….lions fans talking smack when they truly only won 4 games last year and the Bucs truly won 11 games last year.
Better get your smack talk out now lion fan before week one is over and reality sets in again for lion fans.
Funny how lion fans think there gonna improve by leaps & bounds this year but the Bucs wont improve any (after going 11-5) .Most years 9-7 will get you in the play-offs.Bucs dont have to go 12-4 0r better to get in play-offs.Bucs could only win 9 or 10 games against stiffer competition and still get in the play-offs.
There is NO WAY the lions are gonna go from 4 wins to 10 or more wins this year.
And there is NO Way the lions beat the Bucs week one.The NFL “Gave” you the win last year in Tampa.
The Bucs WONT let that happen again.

  63. freemanmvp says: Sep 4, 2011 1:48 PM

Oh, and I will bet my house to any lions fan that Stafford WONT stay healthy and play all 16 games this year.He might not even make it threw the Bucs game.
I would give it at least another year lion fan before you start talking smack before you even get on the field,or can ACTUALLY win 5 games the year before.

  64. freemanmvp says: Sep 4, 2011 1:51 PM
