Jerry Jones talks new contract for Jay Ratliff

Ratliff_Jay

While speaking about the benefits of the new Collective Bargaining Agreement, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said that everyone should be happy about it — and then he interrupted himself to say there’s one Cowboys player who probably isn’t happy.

That one player is nose tackle Jay Ratliff, who — according to Jones — thinks the Cowboys are overdue to offer him a new deal.

“We have assured that we will have 10 years of where we don’t have any issues with anything regarding clubs, players or those types of salaries. Now, I will make an exception,” Jones said, per the Dallas Morning News. “Jay Ratliff will tell you, ‘You’ve got a big issue, Jerry, with my salary. I need a little more money.'”

Ratliff still has two seasons left on the five-year, $20.9 million contract he signed at the end of the 2007 season. The Cowboys will pay Ratliff base salaries of $3.75 million this season and $4.875 million in 2012.

Agent Mark Slough said he and Ratliff aren’t complaining about that contract, although Slough does think Ratliff — who has started every game and made the Pro Bowl all three years since signing the deal — has been a bargain for the Cowboys.

“We certainly are not unhappy with our contract. Do we believe we outperformed the contract? Absolutely. Did we expect to outperform the contract. Sure. Are we bitter or unhappy? Not at all,” Slough said. “You haven’t heard us say one thing at all about our contract. We recognize the economic times we’re in as a country. . . . We’re not going to complain about what we get paid to play in the NFL. Having said that, we believe we’ve outperformed the deal and I don’t think anyone would take issue with that or disagree with that.”

Although Jones brought up the issue publicly, Slough said he and Ratliff will deal with it privately.

“In terms of where do we go with that, our position has been that those discussions will happen privately,” Jones said. “I can’t comment one way or the other rather we are or are not in contract negotiations. I wouldn’t want to comment on contract negotiations. Those will happen privately.”

Jones’s public comments indicate that Ratliff has already hinted privately that he wants a raise.

After all, it’s not Ratliff’s fault that Romo chokes every year and ends their season…

This Guy is true class one of the more underrated dt in the NFL. He’s got a motor that doesn’t quit and he’s natsy to the double teams. Pay him, he actually deserves it, unlike some of these other illiterate turds!

    Undersized and underpayed

    Paid the man Jerry

Talk about a story that isn’t really a story. Sounds to me that JJ is ready to entertain negotiations if he’s bringing it up like that.

They still don’t have anybody to cover DeSean Jackson.

Wow, this Jay Ratliff guy and his agent sound like a class act. Who would have thought the Cowboys would have any guys on their team like this.

Okay, now that I’ve taken care of that (8 Mile style) for all the haters that will no doubt post here…Ratliff does deserve more money, but whatever it is it should not come at the expense of getting the team in salary cap h3ll, which is where they are right now and will be for the next couple of years.

Throw him a $500,000 – $1,000,000 bonus for this year and the next year and then give him a new contract when the current one expires. Or give him a sensible extension without mortgaging the farm.

And yet Dallas has beaten Philly 5 out of the last 6 times without having someone to cover him.

    What’s your point???

Pro bowl because the Dallas fans stuff the ballot box. He better get paid though, how many times can a guy get tan over by Brandon Jacobs and survive. And no I’m not a Giants fan but he is a load coming through that line at you twice a year.

I truly love the romo haters out there yeah he chokes in crunch time. lol have any of you turds watched any of the playoff games the cowboys lost. the giants game was the deffenses fault for not being able to tackle and patrick craytons fault for not catching two balls placed perfectly in his hands and woulda resulted in touchdowns. Seattle who has their starting qb hold on field goals nobody that’s who except that’s what the most over rated head coach in football did. If it weren’t for that first year starter who hadn’t had a full season of starts the cowboys wouldn’t even be in that game. Minnesota the whole team caved in so get your facts straight before you post nonsense like romo is to blame for Dallas failures it’s been coaching poor drafting horrible game prep no accountability you put romo on green bay last year they still win or new Orleans the year before and again win or on that giants team and they win multiple

Ratliff is the type of player any fan would want on their team.

This story doesn’t really matter…Cowboys are going to fail miserably again.

    @brintfatre,

What a moronic comment – typical hater who has nothing better to do than try to handcuff Romo to his past when his stats and QB rating show otherwise. Very likely you are simply jealous you don’t have a QB who is as good as Romo. in 2009, it wasn’t Romo’s fault he gets sacked 6 times is hurried all game, and all the while the defense gets torched – Ratliff was partly responsible in that Minnesota game. Last year was HARDLY Romo’s fault. The Defense was at the bottom of the league, and kept giving up more points than they scored, and an injury-shortened season was on Gronkowski who COMPLETELY missed his blocking assignment on that particular play.

Go back to your alley and drink up, because you are a complete bum when it comes to understanding reality. What a maroon….

Damn you sound like a fool, Romo is not a corner back or a safety. So in saying that, If you watched any of our games or even had a mind of your own, you would know that our defense failed us in the playoffs those years. People like you make me sick, Because all your doing is saying what you heard on TV. You dont watch the Cowboys enough to give your opinion.

His point was he couldnt wait to hate. YOu already said what I was going to say. So theres nothing left for me to do accept second that motion!!

And for those saying Jerry Pay the man. Who hasnt he paid??? Jay will get his just like Witten will. This is a non-story… But the haters do what they do best HATE!!! LOL

Jerry takes care of players that outperform their contracts. He made this public so everyone else knows. Other than feeding his own ego, Jerry’s hoping future free agents see this and decide to take a few less dollars from the Cowboys now knowing that if they perform above expectations, they will be rewarded. If they sign with a team like the Chargers or Titans, they shouldn’t expect to get anything above what’s in the contract.

  19. krashie21 says: Sep 1, 2011 11:41 AM

As a Cowboys fan…….I love J-Rat, but I wouldn’t sign this guy for anything longer than a couple of years.

He’s already 30……there’s no point in signing a nosetackle beyond the age of 33.

Jerruh should know by now that long-term extensions for aging players have hurt his team.

i was a diehard cowboys fan from the year they lost to the colts. when i heard jerry jones fired tom landry in a totally classless manner, that was it for me, especially when he hired jimmy johnson who the previous year ran up the score on my beloved fighting irish. things worked out pretty well for the double j`s after the vikings morgaged the franchise for an over the hill herscel walker. since then they have done squat. you can tell how the organization is run just by watching jerry jones hogging the limelight acting like he is playing with a rich mans toy. the cowboys WILL NEVER, EVER win another championship as long as jones owns the team.
