They bring in veterans, either FA or trade, to take a spin, and the majority of them don’t sign, or play a major role.

This year’s a bit different. The defensive restructuring they are going through there (going to show more 4-3 looks) necessitated them looking at FA defensive line talent a bit more. It leaves a draft pick guy they’ve developed, like Jermaine Cunningham, a bit out in the cold, since he wasn’t a great fit as a base 4-3 end.

That said, one other factor to keep in mind is that, from the start of the BB run in New England, they’ve preferred veteran defensive front 7 talent. Remember that first Super Bowl team? That’s led to some issues with their pass rush, as they simply haven’t found the young talent to step up.
