Bo Jackson: “Panthers are scary” with Cam Newton

042911-NFL-Cam-Newton-JW_2011042914531921_660_320 AP

We’ll have to wait until next Sunday to see what Cam Newton looks like in a real NFL game. But Bo Jackson has seen enough of Newton to say the Panthers will be a frighteningly good team with Newton at the helm — and to compare Newton to a bunch of Hall of Famers.

Jackson, the former Raiders running back who, like Newton, was a Heisman Trophy winner at Auburn, said on the Jim Rome show that Newton’s physical gifts are unlike those of any player in football, and the Panthers have the right offense to take advantage of Newton’s gifts.

“There isn’t another quarterback in the NFL that has all of those tangibles,” Jackson said. “And when you put all of those tangibles together with the quality of receivers and linemen that he’s got blocking for him, and the running backs that he can get the pill to, this guy is scary. The Panthers are scary.”

Jackson also says Newton compares favorably to some of the all-time great NFL players.

“When you speak of Cam Newton, I’ll put it to you just like this: He has the arm strength and power of Dan Marino and John Elway combined,” Jackson said. “He is quicker than Michael Vick, faster than Michael Vick. And he will run over you with the power of a Jerome Bettis, Bo Jackson, Earl Campbell. That’s the kind of guy he is.”

I think Jackson left out Superman, but other than that, he’s pretty well covered every great player he could possibly compare to Newton. And Jackson seems to think Newton is going to be better than any of them. Maybe we should just put Cam in Canton right now.

yeah, and he also left out “with the throwing accuracy of Tim Tebow.” Pump the brakes Bo. This is going to be a long and painful year for the Panthers.

  15. mistersmith22 says: Sep 2, 2011 11:54 AM

It’s heartbreaking to think about what things would have been like had Bo not wrecked his hip. The greatest athlete of a generation.

  16. captaintriumph says: Sep 2, 2011 11:54 AM

He left out BY FAR the TWO most important thing an NFL quarterback needs. ACCURACY and INTELLIGENCE. All the rest is totally irrelevant without it.

  17. bucbearpig says: Sep 2, 2011 11:54 AM

Bo obviously doesn’t ‘know’ as much as he used to

  18. jeterleto says: Sep 2, 2011 11:54 AM

Bo Jackson couldnt make the Panthers a “Frighteningly” good team even with Cam Newton. This is gonna take some time. I love me some Bo Jackson, but Easy Bo Easy.

  20. pigskinswag says: Sep 2, 2011 11:56 AM

Bo is an Auburn Tiger/War Eagle/Whatever the hell they are so of course he’s gonna slurp up to Cam Newton. Better than the 2-14 edition of the Panthers, yes. “Scary” – jury’s still out on that.

    —————–

I think that comment is a little premature to say at this point given the short mini-camps and new system. If this is how he’s performed with little practice and snaps, then maybe Bo does know..

    If anyone knows, Bo KNOWS!

  22. maddog111 says: Sep 2, 2011 11:56 AM

Just a few problems with what Bo said. He doesn’t have the arm strength of either Marino or Elway. He’s not nearly as quick or as fast as Michael Vick, and he’s not nearly as powerful as Bettis, Bo, or Earl Campbell.

Other than that I totally agree with everything else he said.

  23. scudbot says: Sep 2, 2011 11:56 AM

He left out “….with the QB intelligence of Vince Young”

I’m not sure what “QB intelligence” is but Newton’s a rookie and scored 21 on the Wonderlic. Presumably he’ll learn.

  37. kevinbobrow says: Sep 2, 2011 12:04 PM

The arm of John Elway?? Come on Bo… Dude is a freakish athlete, yes, but come on… The ability to read defenses and fit balls in tight spots has very little to do with having pure athletic ability. If he could just take the ball and plow down the field like he did at Auburn, he might be scary. But this is the NFL, man. He better be able to throw the ball with accuracy and anticipation or he will not be great…

  41. FinFan68 says: Sep 2, 2011 12:06 PM

It would seem that Bo would like to have Warren Moon’s job inside Cam’s entourage/posse

  42. sirmixalotalotalot says: Sep 2, 2011 12:09 PM

If Bo Jackson really believes this than he doesn’t know the first thing about football.

Cam Newton has an average arm strength and terrible accuracy. He has poor pocket footwork and is inconsistent in his throwing motion.

He is a great athlete but isn’t in the same league as Michael Vick in his speed or quickness. He can’t even measure up to Pryor on speed & quickness.

If Cam Newton is a starting QB in 5 years I will give everyone on this comment page 100 dollars.

  43. boneyardbuc says: Sep 2, 2011 12:11 PM

Panthers spend 4 picks in the last 2 drafts on college QBs (Newton, Clausen, Edwards, Pike) and Newton is the best they could do with the #1 pick??

LOL. Keep drinkin’ the Auburn kool-aid Bo…

  44. destroyedbydansnyder says: Sep 2, 2011 12:12 PM

Yeah, the panthers are scary all right. They’ve been scary for years.

  45. qdog112 says: Sep 2, 2011 12:13 PM

Some former players would be jealous. Cam was voted the best player in Auburn history over players like Bo. (voted last year) Did Bo exaggerate, perhaps, but I’ll take his word because of who he is. I’ll just say: BO KNOWS!

  46. terrellblowens says: Sep 2, 2011 12:16 PM

I like Newton and all and I think a lot the hate he gets is unfair but he is not faster or quicker than Vick. I don’t know if any QB can ever have the speed and quickness that Vick does and still be a good passer. Likewise Newton pales in comparison to the likes of Marino and Elway in arm strength. He’s a tremendous raw talent but he’s not some kind of legendary athlete. I am rooting for Newton but I think we can all agree that Bo is sipping on the Auburn Kool Aid.

  47. beastson says: Sep 2, 2011 12:16 PM

Can someone pull out the stats and compare Cam’s rookie preseason numbers to those named Vick, Rivers and Rogers

Both me and Moon think you’re an idiot for trying to imply what Warren or Bo said have anything to do with race and not the TANGIBLES he spoke of. How’s that tribalism thing working out for you in the NFL?

  49. pickpro87 says: Sep 2, 2011 12:19 PM

Loving all the hate! Even though Bo went to far I think the panthers will surprise quite a few teams this season, I also think Newt is further along than many people thought he would be, he will make some rookie mistakes but he will have lots plays this season that leave many people in AWE. If we can stay healthy, I think we can win 6-7 games this season, and than next year watch out! Bring on the thumbs down all you lame panther and cam haters.

  59. jackfnburton says: Sep 2, 2011 12:35 PM

“We’ll see how tough Newton is on Nov. 20th when Suh has his way with Newton’s head after a sack.” NFL has a new policy re: concussions. If Suh slams any QBs head into the turf again he should be expelled from the league.

So let’s get this straight. Arm strength of Marino and Elway COMBINED. Powerful as Bettis, Campbell, and Jackson combined. Faster and quicker than Vick. So I ask then……why isn’t Newton totally dominating every game? He must be extremely unintelligent and extremely inaccurate. Or else, like Bo said, he’d be totally dominating.

  81. paulitik74 says: Sep 2, 2011 1:12 PM

I love how these old school players are coming out left and right to endorse this loss-as if their experience at the pro level in a different period of play is translatable to success today. He’ll make pro bowlers out of tight ends, that’s for sure; and if defenses are smart and keep him in the pocket, there will be zero offensive advancement with him leading it. Bring on the season. It’s time to expose this hack.

    1) Both the Panthers and Eagles look “scary”. That is, until their QB’s are broken in half, which I think will happen to both Newton and Vick this year.

    2) Remember the Fox piece from the late 90’s that Bradshaw did about how all of these young QB’s coming out were gonna change the game…? Shaun King, Akili Smith, etc. Of them, only Vick is still even in the league.

    3) Bo knows…..very little. And I would argue that the game has passed him up to the point that a healthy young Bo Jackson in his prime would be mediocre in today’s NFL. When Jackson played…the defenses weren’t as quick and ferocious as they are now.

    I don’t buy that.

Maybe if the NFL, Fox, ESPN, and every other outlet would treat these guys like every other player, instead of presenting them like some sort of super hero when they’ve never completed a pass or ran a ball in the NFL, it would be different. It’s all marketing and PR crap.

You’re telling me the hype machines behind Tim Tebow, Matt Leinart, Ryan Leaf, Lawrence Phillips, Tony Mandarich weren’t out there and no one had the same feelings…Wrong.

I think there’s a part of alot of people that have a sense of animosity for a 21 or 22 year old getting paid umteen millions to play a kid’s game, that in a way, they’re hoping for bad luck on their part…unless they play for your team, of course.

I think we have conclusive proof that the NFL still needs to do additional research into concussions and its effects on retired players! :)

    —————————–

Because he, like Tim TeBlows, is not an NFL quarterback but hey Bo is relying on all of his experience as an evaluator of NFL quarterbacks…

If I need a cheap laptop, I will call Cam but otherwise – not so much…

A stronger arm than Marino and Elway combined would mean that he has attached a ROCKET LAUNCHER to his arm, and loads the football in there every play.
Faster than Michael Vick? Is that why Vick has a faster 40 time?
Runs harder than Bettis, Jackson, and Earl Campbell? Is he a running back or a quarterback?

Bo… please take a vow of silence for the rest of your life.

Bo was a scary GREAT athlete and great football player and a very good baseball player!

Cam is a great athlete and at the NFL not a great player and maybe never will be. He’s not even at Dante Culpepper’s level yet and if he continues to run he’ll be a trivia question before too long.

The Panthers are probably a 5 win team this year.

  116. shootahcowboy says: Sep 2, 2011 2:48 PM

Bo was one of the greatest athletes of all time. The way he ran sideways along the outfield wall was straight out of a kung fu movie and had everyone with their jaws dropped in awe. However, he is dumb as a box of rocks and this assessment of Cam didn’t do him or Cam any favors.

There’s no way Cam lives up to this kind of hype by fellow Auburn “alum” Bo Jackson.

Also, to the idiot who said the criticism of Cam was racist, have you not read the massive criticism of Tim Tebow????

  120. bdawkhit20 says: Sep 2, 2011 3:05 PM

Vick can dart a laser and thread a needle with a precise flick of his wrist easily. his throwing mechanics are sharp and fast. Newton’ I beg to differ and is terribly inaccurate. Randall Cunningham has all the skills that these modern QB’s aspire to replicate. f$kin Gary Anderson missed that dam field goal against the dirty bird falcons in NFC Champ game.

  121. md22mdrx says: Sep 2, 2011 3:09 PM

    He forgot:

#1. Dumb as a box of rocks.
#2. Doesn’t have what it takes to be an NFL quarterback.

  122. dspohn55 says: Sep 2, 2011 3:25 PM

Clearly Michael David Smith isn’t aware that Bo Jackson hails from Auburn, which not coincidentally is the school from which Cam came as well. The Panthers o-line actually is one of the best in the league, especially run blocking, and Deangelo and J. Stewart are arguably the league’s best RB pair, but Cam will need years of hard work and experience until he warrants this praise.

  123. rjkilla says: Sep 2, 2011 3:31 PM

cam newton will be good. why does everyone get so upset when somebody says this?

  124. ss3walkman says: Sep 2, 2011 3:36 PM

  125. tarheelpirate says: Sep 2, 2011 3:54 PM

Hyperbolic? Absolutely. However, I am going to chalk it up to hometown. He trying to talk up fellow Auburn guy.

Also, the Limbaugh-loving white guys never fail to play the race card when it’s about a black qb. Never fails. And why would anyone compare Shaun King and Akili Smith to players like Cam Newton and Mike Vick. Those guys were pocket passers. They weren’t known for their running ability. They threw for tons of yards in college, in passing offenses. Very different from Cam.

  126. stealthjunk says: Sep 2, 2011 3:59 PM

You left out another comparison quote from Bo: “He can bust just like Ryan Leaf and JeMarcus Russell.” Or something like that.

  128. rockyburnette says: Sep 2, 2011 5:23 PM

At this stage of the game Bo knows $$$ when he sees it. Physical talent isn’t enough at QB on Sundays. There is not a team in the league that will not laugh if they see him under center. If pressed he will make some plays and lose the game.

  129. gadgetdawg says: Sep 2, 2011 5:36 PM

I think Newton has potential but Bo isn’t doing him any favors talking him up like this. Carolina has a new coach, new QB and an extremely truncated preseason. Not a good position to be in imho.

On the plus side, I really can’t see how Newton could do worse than pickle boy did.

  130. asuu81 says: Sep 2, 2011 7:13 PM

yeah seriously, here’s the thing, i like Newton’s potential, but to say that he’s fast as Vick isnt really true. Vick is faster and so is Jake Locker. Newton though could be better with his poise and with his passing, he’s not a guy who looks to run first, but he has to work on reading defenses and accuracy.

  140. bigup77 says: Sep 5, 2011 12:02 PM

At the combine Michael Vick ran the 40 in 4.36. Cam Newton ran it in 4.59, tied with Jake Locker for third among QBs. Bo don’t know that.
