The state of Florida has become a hotbed of high school and college football. As far as pro football goes, things aren’t going quite as well.
With the Buccaneers throwing in the towel on a blackout for their Week One home opener against the Lions and the Jags facing an uphill climb to sell out EverBank Field for a visit from the Titans, the Dolphins are staring at the possibility of their 102-game regular-season sellout streak ending with back-to-back blackouts.
CBSMiami.com reports that the Dolphins have a whopping 15,000 unsold tickets for the September 18 visit from the Texans, a game that already was regarded as being a candidate for local TV cancellation. The bigger surprise comes from the status of ticket sales for a season-opening Monday night game against the Patriots. Per the report, 3,000 tickets remain unsold.
Look for the September 12 nationally-televised game to be sold out, even owner Stephen Ross (pictured) has to pay 34 cents on the dollar for the remaining tickets to lift the local blackout. Six days later, anyone in South Florida who wants to see the game will have to buy a ticket -- or get in the car and drive north.
