No one is getting life in prison for this. I don’t know the law, but I’m guessing this is some kind of a manslaughter charge, no prior record, time off for good behavior. This is 5 years in prison, at most. Maybe it should be more, but I don’t think it’s close to a “life-ending mistake.” Another thing you might want to teach your children is not to lie to get out of trouble.

When did they turn in the car. Was it 24 hours later after blood alcohol content is no longer present in the blood stream? If yes, then the fact that they turned in the vehicle makes it look even MORE like a drunk hit and run.

In the city, cops will eventually figure out who’s car it was by filtering through local surveilance videos and by cross referencing with all locally owned cars that fit the make/model. Just a matter of time. Lawyer probably told them to wait out the blood alcohol then turn it in before the cops find you.

Cleaning up the blood would have only made them look more guilty as well when the cops find a drop they missed.

Seriously, if your teenage kid hit and killed someone and panicked and drove off, wouldn’t you take that jail time for them? Do you think he would let one of his daughters get locked away if he could prevent it?

What kind of sense does that make? You’ll be in jail. You’ll NEVER be able to fix their mistakes again. I know my kids, and if I went to jail because of their mistake, it would be a much more profound lesson for them than spending the time in jail themselves…..

I expect my children to take responsibility for their mistakes too. Their mother sometimes overrules my efforts to make them do so….. But this is a life-ending mistake. I would take that to give them a chance to learn from it and never make that mistake again.
