Josh Sitton signs long-term deal with Packers

2011 NFC Championship: Green Bay Packers v Chicago Bears Getty Images

Packers guard Josh Sitton has quietly developed into one of the very best at his position.  Now he’s going to be paid like it.

Packers.com announced a long-term deal with Sitton on Friday. Terms are unavailable, but Sitton’s comments on Twitter after the news broke indicates that it’s a five-year extension through 2016.

“It’s a big weight off my shoulders,” Sitton said.

The Packers were among the league leaders in salary cap room and G.M. Ted Thompson spent the surplus the way he always spends it: On a talented homegrown draft pick.

“It’s kind of surreal, thinking three and a half years ago sitting in college and not even knowing if I would get drafted or not,” Sitton said.

He is a rock. He may have been snubbed in the pro bowl last year, but that won’t happen again.

    Go. Pack. Go.

The Eagles would have spent it on a 2 year deal with a 30+ year old FA to plug an O-line gap.

  9. packerbacker12 says: Sep 2, 2011 4:23 PM

Sitton deserves every penny of this deal. He is the anchor of that offensive line and is one if not the most underrated player in the league.

What will make him even better than most guards is that he’ll be playing against the Lion’s D-line twice a year. After playing them, you know the rest of the league is going to be a lot easier.

Goes both ways, Lion’s D-line will be better now that they go against him twice a year. Good signing Pack.

I don’t think Finley will get an extension til later in the year, if not after the season. He is an awesome talent but needs to prove his durability for a full 16+ games. Shutting his mouth wouldn’t hurt either.

    GPG.

Or is there some pun intended by showing Sitton sitting/squatting?

    Weird.

    Happy Labor Day all.

“The Eagles would have spent it on a 2 year deal with a 30+ year old FA to plug an O-line gap.”

    Yeah!

    Um, no. Good try though.

The Eagles either make 1 year deals on the risky players (Vince Young) or relatively longer deals on top tier talent (Asomugha).

Otherwise they resign their own young talent to long term deals.

  19. scudbot says: Sep 2, 2011 4:56 PM

Land Snark: Noted, and I stand corrected. Make that a one year deal.

  20. packfntk says: Sep 2, 2011 5:11 PM

Well done Ted Thompson. You are the man.

I love it when I see good guys like Sitton get rewarded. Congrats!

Next up, Finely, CM3, and Raji!

  21. johnnyb216 says: Sep 2, 2011 5:21 PM

Thank god. I was so worried about this one since TT has a history of not paying big money to guards. Glad he recognized he has one of the best young offensive lineman in the league and deserved a fair contract. Now we gotta lock up finely and Matthews to long term deals and restructure Rodgers deal for more years and a pay raise since the Vick contract has reeked havoc on the market value of a good quarterback. Raji will probably have to wait till next year but that’s alright since he’s already getting top 10 draft pick money anyways.

Finally the Packers hang on to a good guard!

    Adam Timmerman
    Mike Wahle
    Marco Rivera
    Daryn Colledge

I’m sure I’m forgetting some but you get the point.

(Marco Rivera really was at the end of his career but the other two went on to be very good guards with Timmerman going to the Super Bowl with the St. Louis Rams and Wahle going to the Pro Bowl with the Panthers.)

  25. glac1 says: Sep 2, 2011 5:27 PM

Ted Thompson truly is among the elite but never gets any attention. The networks always throw a camera on Jerry Jones, Danny Snyder etc., but how many people who don’t follow the Pack even know what Ted looks like.

  27. randolph32 says: Sep 2, 2011 5:32 PM

That’s one of the few things that Angelo acutally does right, signing the young players….hopefully he’s not stupid enough to do anything for Briggs–his deal was front loaded, so he’s got the majority of the money already.

  28. scudbot says: Sep 2, 2011 5:39 PM

rcunningham says: “I love how Packer fans think players care that they play for the Packers.” No doubt this is an unfamiliar concept to you since you’re a Vikings fan and half your team is made of Packers who were waived.

    =========================
Ok, I’m sort of with you, with the exception of Rivera who was in decline as you mentioned. Wahle needed to be cut because of the salary cap situation Sherman left Thompson with, and wasn’t going to pay him the Left Tackle type money Carolina threw at him. And then you said:

    Daryn Colledge

And you completely lost me. Adequate pass blocker. Awful, awful in the run game. Raji abused him in the preseason game like a red-headed stepchild.

Good for Sitton, bad for the rest on the North, but seriously, if this is all it takes to be proclaimed a genius in Packer circles, a lot of things become much clearer….. What’s his next genius move, stopping for the old lady in the crosswalk?

You are a FAN of a team- that does not make you part of it. Neither does a worthless piece of paper that says packer “stock” on it.

This was really a no brainer signing. As a rookie he stepped into that spot on the line and was probably the most consistent performer on a line that seemed to be in shambles all year. He has done nothing but improve over the next two seasons, and has really developed into a top guard in the league. He isn’t going to get many mentions on TV Sunday afternoons, but really for an O lineman that is more of a good thing than a bad thing.

  55. brewdogg says: Sep 3, 2011 1:56 PM

OK, I have ignored this for so long, but I just have to say it now.

STOP WITH THE PACKER OWNERSHIP THING!!!

No, they don’t pay out dividends. No, you can’t sell them on the open market. The “stocks” are proof that this person, or a member of their family, contributed their money to making the Packers what they are. It is not something done for profit, but for pride. It is much like making a donation to a community rec center. You usually don’t have a say it how it is run, or derive any profit from it, but you know that that building is standing there in part because you contributed your money to build it. The Packer “owners” are proud to have given their money to help build the Packers.

This is not something that should be attacked, and it just makes you, and the rest of us, look petty and foolish when you do.
