Steelers end Leftwich’s season, get roster to 58

Byron Leftwich AP

Byron Leftwich will not get a chance to return from his broken left arm this season.

The Steelers placed Leftwich on injured reserve, ending his season. They also cut 21 more players, getting their roster to 58.

Perhaps most notable on the list: wide receiver Tyler Grisham, who seemingly had made a good impression.  He’s a practice squad candidate. Jerricho Cotchery appears to be safe.

Here’s the full list of cuts: Baraka Atkins, Mario Harvey, Chris McCoy and Mortty Ivy, defensive lineman Corbin Bryant, defensive backs Brett Greenwood, Macho Harris, Donovan Warren and Da’Mon Cromartie-Smith, running backs James Johnson and John Clay, offensive linemen Colin Miller, Kyle Jolly, John Malecki, Trevis Turner and Keith Williams, wide receivers Armand Robinson, Wes Lyons and Tyler Grisham, tight end Jamie McCoy and kicker Swayze Waters.

Leftwich is set to be a free agent next year.

Suprised no one is giving John Clay much of a shot.

Morty Ivy, Corbin Bryant, Donovan Warren, and Swayze Waters will all get a look somewhere else.
    Maybe Wes Lyons too.

The next 5 cuts will be even more difficult, and each of those players is likely to be picked up as well.

Good luck, Byron. Who are the Steelers backup running backs? They appear to be extremely thin at that position. Also, considering the age of their defense they’ll be lucky to make it through the year. Is this the last year before that defense is going to need a major overhaul? Steelers look vulnerable.

  4. mrwaters says: Sep 2, 2011 4:52 PM

Nobody with the name MACHO should ever get cut.

  5. notwhoyouthinkitis says: Sep 2, 2011 4:59 PM

KIR, you are incorrect. The Steelers are quite strong at RB. Not even a question about it.
Defense age? LOL! They said that last year. Result: playing in the SB and number 1 defense.
Steelers are never vulnerable, sport. Sheesh, get a clue even if you are jealous of all the SB victories. Six to be precise.

After Mendenhall, the Steelers have Mewelde Moore, Jonathan Dwyer and Isaac Redman. They aren’t thin at all at RB.

How are they thin if you don’t even know who they are?

Mewelde Moore, Isaac Redman, and Jonathan Dwyer are the backups. Same 4 guys as last season.

The Steelers will start the same 11 guys on defense that took them to the Superbowl. They didn’t look too old when they shut down the Eagles first team offense two weeks ago.

KIR you obviously didnt watch any games this pre season

  9. zone44blitz says: Sep 2, 2011 5:18 PM

@KIR – Back up running backs are Mewelde Moore, Isaac Redman (3rd Down Back) and Jonathan Dwyer. Baron Batch, a 7th round pick, is on IR with an ACL injury.

    @ KIR

Redman, Moore, and Dwyer….Barring one of them being in the last 5 cuts, i’m more than happy with that depth….Time will tell on defense i think we are at least fine for another year, also in timmons woodley hood and heyward (i have faith he’ll fit in) we already have 4 out of a front 7 for the forseeable future….and the others arent done yet

  11. chazzmon says: Sep 2, 2011 5:28 PM

Does Belichek pick up one of these guys to get the P-Burg Playbook?

  12. jimbobobjr says: Sep 2, 2011 5:29 PM

Funny, Tomlin said before the last preseason game that bubble players could make the team with a strong final game. Morrty Ivy responds by making 9 tackes and a sack, all while calling the defensive signals. Way to keep your word, coach. All the best, Mortty. You will have a job in the NFL this year on someone’s active roster. I’m only sorry it’s not on the Steelers.

What happened to Limas Sweed? Didn’t he get hurt again or have they already cut him?

  14. bclower says: Sep 2, 2011 5:49 PM

Yeah old defense!!!!! Well c how old when they make a run!!!! As far as RB goes wouldn’t call Redman and Dwyer at all thin those r 2 bruising backs

  15. clayton43 says: Sep 2, 2011 5:53 PM

lol That is funny… Ummm the Steelers if anyone drafts for the future and like them or not…. you cant say they dont. Redman is honestly good enough to start anywhere else and Moore is a very goodd 3rd down back and Dwyer isnt bad at all. If we are thin… it is at OL and CB.. love hearing other peoples opinion good or bad but please have your facts straight and know what you are talking about before you post such stupid comments. Peace

The Steelers are in the same position as a lot of teams this year. They will be good as long as they can stay healthy. This will be “the season of injuries” this year because of lack of preparation during the lockout. But I wouldn’t count them out even if their defense is a little older and their offensive line is suspect.

  17. steelernation1 says: Sep 2, 2011 6:01 PM

    @jimbobobjr

Tomlin saying he COULD keep anyone that does well.COULD isn’t a definite it means possibly more or less..he did not say he WILL keep players that do well,he said he COULD..see the difference?

@thefiesty1 Sweed has been gone since the first cuts..

as far as running game..i don’t see any problems there..or receiving game to be honest..very deep there…now D backs is another story..i am a bit concerned about that one..from there in will be fine..steelers D is very strong up front..

  18. wvucolumbus says: Sep 2, 2011 6:09 PM

Just because you haven’t heard of the Steelers backup RB’s (most likely Redman and Dwyer) doesn’t mean they aren’t good. They haven’t played for anybody else and have made strong impressions within the Steelers organization…..and to be honest, a good impression to Mr. Rooney, (newly appointed GM) Kevin Colbert and Mike Tomlin is really all that matters to me.

Suprised no one is giving John Clay much of a shot.

Hopefully they can keep him on the practice squad like they did with Dwyer last year. They are very similar in style. I don’t understand the fascination with Mewelde Moore. Maybe next year they will go with Clay instead of Moore.

  20. dirtdawg55 says: Sep 2, 2011 6:34 PM

The fascination with Mewelde Moore is he is a credible threat to run or catch the ball and he is an adept blocker. All are vital skills as a third down back. His presence means the Steelers can maintain a large array of plays on third down. Without that versatility they have to give up too much of the playbook.

He’s small and he slow. He is a good blocker. He doesn’t strike fear in anyone as a runner or receiver any of the other backs is more of a threat to run. Large array of plays? Are you kidding me?

    Screen
    Wrap around draw
    Bubble screen

That is the steelers whole 3rd down playbook.

My bad. Just disappointed he didn’t make the team. Thought he could be another undrafted gem that they keep finding.

  23. ampats says: Sep 2, 2011 8:54 PM

    chazmonn,

since the Steelers can’t beat the Patriots maybe it might be a better idea to pick up one of the Pats cuts for the playbook.

  24. bullethead527 says: Sep 3, 2011 2:13 AM

Im hoping my Panthers look through Steelers and Ravens roster cuts to try and bring in some talent on D, we need help at the DT position and at CB, we can find some gems in those teams cuts…..

  25. bullethead527 says: Sep 3, 2011 2:14 AM

Both those teams are too good on D to keep potential starters cuz even their 2nd string could start on most teams Def…….

  26. robcypher says: Sep 3, 2011 7:24 AM

Time for the Steelers to start looking for more bodies for the OL and the CB positions. Leftwich was an okay backup but he got hurt too much. Batch is okay but is almost 40, and Dixon doesn’t inspire too much confidence in me – I think the Steelers should perhaps look for a QB to put on their practice squad.

  27. achap39 says: Sep 3, 2011 1:51 PM

Shame to see Armand Robinson get cut…always hope for more guys from my alma mater to make the league.
