Vick says, “You can’t design a defense to stop me”

File photo of Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Michael Vick smiling during NFL game in Philadelphia Reuters

Mike Vick apparently plans to earn every penny of his latest $100 million* contract.

Despite late-season evidence of regression and/or defenses figuring out Mike Vick 2.0 in 2010, Vick remains supremely confident in his abilities.

I’ve been hearing that for years,” Vick recently told Michael Silver of Yahoo! Sports.  “You can’t design a defense to stop me, especially not on this team.  We have so many weapons, and some teams have tried to make that their primary focus.  That’s when we run up the score.”

Coach Andy Reid agrees, explaining that Vick has worked on his struggles last year against the blitz.

“Now he’s got it,” Reid said.  “People can say there’s a way to stop Michael Vick, but this is a team sport.  You’ve got this beautiful mind of [offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg's] and you’ve got to deal with what he’s gonna throw at you, and there are all these other players you have to defend.  You can say you’re gonna stop Michael Vick, but you’ve got to stop the whole group.”

(Lions fans have passed out from laughter regarding the use of “beautiful mind” in reference to Mornhinweg.)

Of course, stopping the whole group becomes a little easier given the struggles of the five men responsible for opening holes and buying time for Vick.  And so instead of talking big, Vick, Reid, and company would be better served finding a way to dial back those sky-high expectations while they focus on getting the job done, once and for all, in 2011.

They don’t have to. The good Lord designed him with hamstrings that last about 9 weeks.

Did I miss them winning the SB last year? Or did someone manage to, you knwow, “stop” Vick and the Eagles?

I know, I know. This year they have even more weapons and truly will be unstoppable. They sure looked that way when their starters were against the Steelers starters. Unstoppable I tell you!

  10. packfannchitown says: Sep 2, 2011 6:54 AM

    Two words: Dom Capers

  11. phillyfan4ever says: Sep 2, 2011 6:56 AM

People are going to hate this, but as the leader of our team, I love the confidence, its exactly what you want out of your QB.

  12. steelerfanreece says: Sep 2, 2011 6:56 AM

Yeah Vick, I guess when you and your 1st team played the Steelers first team you pretty much marched up and down the field at will. Or maybe you just believing the hype about your “dream team”!

  13. 2ruefan says: Sep 2, 2011 6:57 AM

I seem to recall a team with a porous secondary that ended up 6-11 stopping him QUITE well near the end of the season…

So, he’s learned soooooo much in just a few months?

    Interesting quote…..

  14. kellyb9 says: Sep 2, 2011 6:59 AM

Since he was injured about 2 or 3 times last year, I’m thinking that you could stop him.

  15. typicaleaglesfan says: Sep 2, 2011 7:01 AM

Gosh darnit mike and Andy are going all plaxico on us. Lol

Seriously don’t talk like this guys green bay did a good job in the wild card and so did the Vikings smh let’s hope they hbe a better plan than they did in preseason because as “unstoppable” as you are of there is no o line to protect you we will lose more than we all expect. I love me some eagles but really be quiet and do it kb the field

Good to see the new humble Mike Vick. Maybe what he should have said is the only thing that will stop him is getting killed behind that awful offensive line. Shut up and play football please!

    Ummm ask the Bears Mike.

  20. deegizzle says: Sep 2, 2011 7:09 AM

You’ll never hear Peyton Manning, Drew Brees, Peyton Manning, Donovan McNabb, etc. saying “You can’t design a defense to stop me.”

It is okay to be confident, but you don’t need to tell it to the world.

Vick still needs to better himself in this area and let his play do the talking.

  21. themonkeyman says: Sep 2, 2011 7:10 AM

A sociopath & “father of the year” sure have a lot to say when both have been career under achievers in the post season. And Mornhinweg is a “beautiful mind”. If nothing else, the talk coming from the Eagles is certainly amusing.

You are gonna have a fun year Eagle fans.

Cue the “you are all are haters” dribble.

BTW, you also might as well start the “wait until next year” babble as well, you’re all gonna need it.

  22. tombradysbaby says: Sep 2, 2011 7:10 AM

Sure it’s pretty easy. Contain you in the pocket and force you to throw the ball. Every once in a while disguise a blitz that makes you get all jumpy.

  25. wewantmoretebowandfavrearticles says: Sep 2, 2011 7:13 AM

If a defense can’t be designed to stop him, how come he always loses to the Bears? I think the key to beating Vick is just to have an athletic MLB spy him. A scheme can be set up to stop him but whether or not the players are able to capitalize on their opportunities to stop Vick in that scheme is another.

  26. texline1 says: Sep 2, 2011 7:15 AM

There is a fine line between confidence and arrogance that the Eagles have leaped across and landed 10 feet past.

  27. mykelane says: Sep 2, 2011 7:15 AM

good thing there’s a link to the article. Nice job though of re-arranging a few quotes. I would have never been able to read through the slanted message that is portrayed here.

  28. pheelingphine says: Sep 2, 2011 7:15 AM

Oh no. Why do they even open their mouths? C’mon Philly, you are feeding the media what they want to hear. Do you want to become America’s Most Hated Team?

  29. heybeerman95 says: Sep 2, 2011 7:17 AM

And I guess he already forgot about the Steelers—3 picks, 5 completions.

  33. jsin76 says: Sep 2, 2011 7:20 AM

“America’s Most Hated Team”……sounds like the anti Dallas (America’s Team) so, taking that rivalry into consideration, probably. If people are hatin then you must be doing something right.

  34. jdreed68 says: Sep 2, 2011 7:21 AM

As an Eagles fan…Its nice to hear him say that…Now prove it on the Field!

  35. tundey says: Sep 2, 2011 7:21 AM

I guess we ought to clear their schedule then. No need to play the games. This is even worse than the “dream team” statement. “Can’t design a defense to stop me”…..am sure that’s going to keep defensive coordinators even more juice to dial up the blitzes.

    The Bears stopped Vick.

The Vikings (who were playing a WR at QB) shut down vick….

  42. TheDPR says: Sep 2, 2011 7:34 AM

This is why he has never won a championship.

He gets stopped year after year after year and still thinks he’s unstoppable.

  60. eaglesblow says: Sep 2, 2011 8:08 AM

That is not “confidence”. That is “arrogance” just like that “dream team” and “gold standard” nonsense. It’s a bunch of BS for a guy that has never thrown more than 21 TDs or 3100 yards in a season.

  61. jayp610 says: Sep 2, 2011 8:09 AM

Don Capers stopped Vick? Are you serious? Week 1 he ran n threw all over the Packers. Then in the playoffs he threw over 280 n td. The pick at the end of the game would of never happened if Akers made the chip.shot field goal earlier in the game. Thats why Akers isn’t on the team and got replaced by a rookie…

  62. tv426 says: Sep 2, 2011 8:09 AM

Last year was a huge anomaly for Vick (who started really strong but faded big time down the stretch). The past shows us, dramatically, that he certainly can be stopped (and yes, I’m being very nice here).

Do it for a number of years straight, THEN we can talk about how great you are!

  63. akulabug says: Sep 2, 2011 8:11 AM

Atta boy Mike. Paint that bullseye a little bigger.

  64. rmm1984 says: Sep 2, 2011 8:12 AM

I hate Vick as much as the next guy but is there any way he didn’t mean it exactly how it sounds and instead he meant you can’t (shouldn’t) design a D to stop him because the rest of the team is too good and will kill you if you don’t focus on them, where in the past he still would have tried to do it all himself. I know Vick has 0 benefit of the doubt built up but that’s how I took it.

  65. eaglesblow says: Sep 2, 2011 8:12 AM

This is bad we are now seeing Vick revert back to the “I’m untouchable” attitude that has plagued him his entire crime-filled life.

  66. kspl1 says: Sep 2, 2011 8:13 AM

The point, u small minded idiots is that u can’t stop Vick. It’s eleven people out there. So if they stop the offense, it could be the horrible line protection, predictable play-calling. Any number of things. When drew brees threw 22 int’s last year why didn’t anyone say “oh they figured out brees.” the reason is people hate Vick and want to put him down. All of u can just go to h$@l.

  67. mdd913 says: Sep 2, 2011 8:14 AM

Vick reminds me of his cousin Aaron Brooks, who would go out and throw a couple picks and fumble a couples times and then talk about how great he was.

It’s all false bravado. Deep down inside Vick is a very insecure person. Even at his best it’s only a matter of time before the wheels fall off.

  68. reidstinks says: Sep 2, 2011 8:14 AM

  69. laeaglefan says: Sep 2, 2011 8:15 AM

With Eli and his turnovers to help the Eagles along, the Giants will once again stumble their way through two losses to the Birds this year. Count on it! The only mystery is which of his players Coughlin will end up screaming at this year.

I am a lifelong eagles fan – so when I say this you know where I am coming from.

Eagles players & coaches. Please shut the F up about how great you are. All you are doing is painting an even bigger target on your back. Just go out and play. You have some of the most passionate, loudest and of course most obnoxious fans in the league. Let us talk for you. PLEASE!!!!

also that is pretty big talk with a 6th round rookie center (rookies make all blocking calls on the line) and a rookie guard and shaky tackle.

not to mention deshaun isn’t signed and i can’t really blame a guy making league minimum who doesn’t want to go over the middle until he is financially secure.

let’s get some hardware and then you can talk your faces off all offseason.

i liked humble, “i’ll do anything just for a chance” Michael Vick. This guy is getting delusional.

All you do is play extra safeties in cover two, crowd the intermediate route and bracket his deep threat over the top…..Green Bay figured it out, Chicago probably could as well.

Whenever he runs, he subjects himself to possible injury, then knocking him out of the game…and VY has already taken himself out with the same “running man” act.

You can say you’re gonna stop Michael Vick, but you’ve got to stop the whole group.”

Vick’s response: “I’ve been hearing that for years. You can’t design a defense to stop me, especially not on this team. We have so many weapons, and some teams have tried to make that their primary focus. That’s when we run up the score.”
    ———————————————————————–
That’s directly from the story/link. Mind telling us where PFT “re-arranged some quotes”? OK, they put Reid’s first and Vick second. Doesn’t change the context at all. PFT quoted the story verbatim.

Is it time for the Eagles to send PR guru/spin doctor Vince Young out to say that Vick and Reid were mis-quoted in the story?

“You can’t design a defense to stop me”

    it should be:

You can’t design a defense to stop me”

i.e. maybe he meant Michael Silver can’t design a defense to stop. :)

  91. falconsfan says: Sep 2, 2011 8:57 AM

The next time any Michael Vick fan wonders why he is so disliked, they need only read this quote again.

He makes it too easy to NOT like him.

There is a difference between confidence and arrogance; Mike Vick has as much trouble finding that as he does an open receiver.

You ain’t THAT good, Mikey. Talk like this AFTER you’ve actually accomplished something.

Uh the Vikings held you to 25 of 43 with 1 TD and 1 INT & 263 yards on December 28, 2010… With a defensive coordinator calling his 1st game while beating you with a rookie QB playing his 1st game.

  94. dogluverssuck says: Sep 2, 2011 9:03 AM

Considering it has been a whole decade since he was drafted and people are still saying he has been figured out yet he made get another pro bowl in 2010. So how long does it take to figure out a player?

  95. mykelane says: Sep 2, 2011 9:04 AM

@gcsuk – the article is talking about the blitz. Reid then discusses stopping vick by blitzing shouldnt be the primary focus due to the team sport aspect of the game.
Vick backs up Reid’s statement by saying design whatever blitz you want, you have to worry about his other teammates. in regards to ‘run up the score’, thats due to 1 vs 1’s and the big plays give up when people blitz. the whole converstation is based on Vick’s inablity to read the blitz last year and his confinence in working on that weakness this year.
IMO the PFT article writer (and site owner) slants every vick article due to personal issues, which is fine, its his website.

Let’s take a look at your QB ratings over the years: 62.7, 81.6, 69.0, 78.1, 73.1, and 75.7. He had a good rating last year when he snuck up on everyone, but then faded down the stretch.

Based on your stats, I’d say there are many defenses that can be designed to stop you, weapons or no weapons.

  98. myopinionisrighterthanyours says: Sep 2, 2011 9:08 AM

You idiots do realize that the Eagles come into EVERY pre-season game with maybe 5-10 scripted BASE plays and nothing else. They said BEFORE The steelers game, no gameplan, they were there to test players and get out healthy. Philly will rock it again this year an hopefully get over the hurdle.

  100. MichaelEdits says: Sep 2, 2011 9:13 AM

    —————————————————
I think every defense in the NFL can stop Donovan McNabb! How the hell does he even get thrown into the same group as Drew Brees and Peyton Manning (Twice).

  103. Fantasy Football Legend says: Sep 2, 2011 9:40 AM

Please Vick….I got it right here. Leave the CB’s out in the flats, also have the Def End’s drop back a little, dont blitz let the other DE lineman rush him. Also drop the outside line backs and safetys and then let the middle LB Blitz or Spy. If you do this, Vick run lanes will be covered every place it goes. Also Vick is not very accurate at all so he will be throwing INT’s.

Haha! No but seriously. It’s called blitzing. It’s a type of play not a whole defense. You can’t beat the blitz. You crack under pressure. It’s ok. At least you can run fast.

Duh. Even Vince Young knows he plays on a team. “Now he’s got it,” Reid said. Now he’s got it? Six years with the Falcons, two years to think about it in the slammer, two more years in Philly. It apparently has taken Vick 10 years to realize that QBs play in an offensive system. Now all he has to do is learn to pocket pass behind that O-line that the geniuses on the coaching and player personnel staffs forgot about while they were slobbering over FAs because they can’t draft and develop.

Vick 2.0 is quickly sounding more and more like the arrogant pathological liar that he was back in 2007.
Teams already had figured out how to defend him. Blitz from the edges, and assign a spy in the middle. It doesn’t take long for him to fall back to his old habits, which is to try to force something in there as he is going down, and that results in a big gift INT for the opposing team.
I can’t tell you how many times I saw that in the Georgia Dome. He has amazing skills, but still hasn’t learned his lessons.

The best confidence is always expressed in actions, not words. Saying that other teams can’t prepare for a team that is, like all other teams, still scrambling to finalize its personnel and game plans of its own, after the missing offseason, is simply dumb.

Vick’s whole career has been a series of exciting plays within a mediocre whole, and there’s no reason to expect that to change as he gets older, which will make his style of play harder to maintain and easier to prepare for over time. Plenty of teams prepared for and handled the Eagles quite well last season, and the season before that.

The Eagles are a good team with a lot of talent. But they will learn, as their division-mates Dallas has learned, that a sense of entitlement will get you nowhere.

If Vick were white, he would have never missed a game, let alone went to jail for a cruel ans unusual sentence for sucj a minor infraction, even if it was an infraction.

Kind of a dumb comment, really. Vick got 2 years on a federal racketeering charge, and did no time at all for the dog violence, because his own state chose not to prosecute him on it, sweeping it under the table in a wink-wink moment if every there was one. And it’s not a stretch to say that based on who made that decision and where they were made, part of the motive was racial.

So where’s the “cruel and unusual” part, exactly?

I think that if Vick was white, he’d be out of the league with no way back at this point. Sympathy from his own community for horrible violence against dogs, plus purely athletic valuation of the man by his white bosses, is what paved his way back in. He would not have either of those things if he was white.

  155. distracted9 says: Sep 2, 2011 3:05 PM

I don’t think anyone figured Vick out last year or how to beat him.. Teams exploited an injured makeshift o-line. I suppose he could have thrown them under the the bus like Peyton Manning did but he didn’t. Fact is put him behind a solid line and I don’t see a team that can stop him with all his weapons.. But.. His line is still questionable at best so.. go ahead and blitz and tell yourselves you’ve found the formula.

If anyone is really interested in reading the real article it is on Yahoo Sports. I can’t believe how they allow this man Mike Fioro to continue to pick out certain words take them completely out of context and then start his hate rant on Vick. I believe If Vick said “its a beautiful day” This hack would say something stupid like he can’t say it is a beautiful day it may not be a beautiful day to the people in Guam. This is how sick he is and filled with hate toward one human being. But it is okay it is heating him up inside he will see that one day before it is too late. I thought it gave his teammates a boost of confidence when he made the statement if you just game plan for me. You are in trouble I will get it to my teammates and if you don’t think they have his back you are a fool. Unlike McNabb Vick does not throw his teammates under the bus. He even took up for the rookies when they talked about them. Who doesn’t want to play with a teammate like that. So Mike keep hating you are the only one killing themselves well you and a few others that fill like you can treat humans any kind of way as long as you love a dog. Well you are in a real rude awakening come judement day. Hate kills and it is eternal damnation. Good luck with that. Go Mr. Vick the way to stand up for your team. All of u can just go to h$@l.”

That’s because Brees knows how to play QB, he isn’t just a guy with a low 40 time and great moves who can kinda, sorta throw a football.

Vick is the least dangerous Eagle on the field. You can absolutely stop him, and it’s easy to do. Vick couldn’t read a defense if he was spotted half the play and talked through the other. Keep him in the pocket, with an athletic spy. His O-line is bad enough that 4 rushers should provide enough pressure to make him think quick, which is not his forte. Zone blitz to confuse the looks and line calls, and you have the makings of a flat Vick. Yes, the Eagle playmakers will get their licks in, but you can absolutely gameplan to stop Vick, and as a result, stop the Eagles.

While it is true that he had less weapons to work with in Atlanta, it seemed that 3 teams always found a way to control Vick: Tampa Bay (when Kiffin was the DC), Philly (when Jim Johnson was the DC) and Baltimore…..Not that he didn’t sometimes beat these teams, but they always made it difficult for him, and Mike Vick doesn’t like “difficult”……

  164. Cowboys-Forum says: Sep 2, 2011 6:30 PM

yeah, he has changed………………….not, same dirtbag dog he always was, the only difference is he is a dirtbag dog killer worth $100 million………..so the Eagles sold their soul for a Super Bowl…………..nice.

“You can’t design a defense to stop me, especially not on this team. We have so many weapons, and some teams have tried to make that their primary focus. That’s when we run up the score.”

Really Vick thats why you have no rings and a early exit last year in the playoffs. Whats your excuse there the Eagles had a 2 to 1 turn over ratio. Good teams have figured it out, good teams I emphasize, many teams have figured it out not all can implement it. Look at Brady many say is the best QB next to Manning if not the best but if you pressure Brady he collapses. Lets face it Vick since you became a “pocket passer” you suck at pressure. Yes it was preseason but the Steelers with their pressure caused you to throw 3 ints. You have great weapons this year what you do not have is a great o-line. If I were you Id spend some of that extra money insuring your legs, arms or what ever will break next on you that seems to happen every season.

“Philly will rock it again this year an hopefully get over the hurdle.”

Rock it again? They went 10-6 and were bounced in the first round.

I know things are brutal for Philadelphia sports fans, but raise your standards for rocking it.

And lost to the Superbowl Champs, who had to squeak by them with four points, thanking the Lord for David Akers’ two missed field goals.

Those Champs then went on to embarrass the 1st seed Falcons and Steelers.

If Jones catches that wide open TD, then Akers isn’t a factor anyways. Woulda, shoulda, coulda happens in every game, great players find a way to win. And last years playoff loss happened as it always does with Vick. He never has & never will perform in the playoffs. And thats why Vick is not a great player.

“I wouldnt say Don Capers stopped him….Vick made a horrible throw the LAST drive of the game and threw a redzone pick. GB was getting handled by the vickster throughout the game though.”

Completing only 20 of 36 passes with only 1 touchdown isn’t exactly dominating.

There’s no defense designed to stop him? He might want to sit down and have a cup of coffee with Dick Lebeau and explain that one to him. Just two weeks ago in the preseason game against the Steelers:

    Vick 5/12 47 yds 0 tds 3 ints and 3yds rushing.

… and like this team hasn’t already said enough dumb stuff to have the other teams’ adrenaline flowing.

  173. vomitingliberals says: Sep 4, 2011 3:20 AM

You can’t design a defense to stop you? Huh? Stop you from what, electrocuting defenseless animals? Seriously, All opposing defenses have done since you came into the league is prevent you from winning a Super Bowl. You have as many Super Bowl rings as I do. In fact, you’ve never even won a Conference Championship either. Nope, not even a single trip to the big dance.

By the looks of it, Michael, I’d say that defenses have shown that you are indeed entirely stoppable.

All systems normal, the Eagle fans are still touting their regular season wins.

Everyone knows how regular season wins mean as much to the city of Philadelphia as Super Bowl wins mean to the rest of the country.

They are going to start selling shirts & hats in Philly memorializing their regular season wins. While the rest of the NFL’s fans will celebrate championships, Philadelphia’s fans will continue to celebrate regular season wins.

Regular season wins are championships in Eagle land.

  177. teal379 says: Sep 4, 2011 11:19 AM

For those whiny people saying it was out of context that the team has too many weapons etc.

Shutting down Vick means those other weapons don’t get the ball. In effect shutting down Vick shuts down the offense because he’s the QB.

It’s different if Vick’s a stud WR – shut him down and there’s other WR’s to get open/the ball and score.

But he isn’t. He’s the head of the snake so to speak so yeah – shutting down Vick means the other dream teamers can’t get the ball which means they’re not going anywhere.

Only a matter of time before he gets his posse back together and restarting their gangsta life. Can’t wait until karma gets back in touch with this sociopath because you’ve got a lot to atone for!!! I just hope they keep replaying the moment his legs snap like pretzels – over and over and over again – ultra slow motion!!! Gonna be a glorious day!

The point being, you dimwits, is that you can’t stop Vick. There are eleven players out there. So, if they are able to stop the offense the reasoning may be due to horrible line protection, predictable play-calling , or any number of other things.

[[So logically they would be stopping Vick..?? And when you said Vick did you mean the Eagles? Why else would you mention the 11 other players.]]

When Drew Brees threw 22 int’s last year did anyone claim, “Oh look they’ve finally figured out Brees!”. Nope, the reasoning for this article and many like it is due to people detesting Vick and aspiring to constantly put him down.

With that being said, all of you can go to h$@l.

    You’re right.

Why would any football fan be excited about a game that will go into the history books as the only walk-off punt return in the history of the NFL?

Oh, right, because it didn’t happen during the Superbowl, it doesn’t count.

Man, what must it be like as a Cowboys fan, having to hate every single regular season game because it’s not the Superbowl.

When Tony Romo throws for a regular season TD, it must be really tough to sit there quietly, not cheering, because it’s not a Super Bowl TD.

Oh wait, you cheer for your team in the regular season? You’re just an idiot hypocrite with nothing to say but “Durf durf Superbowls” as if your current team is even close to sniffing one?

    Thought so.

Such anger from such perennial losers.

A few things other NFL teams can count on:

Eagle fans will always bring up regular season wins but very few playoff wins. Why is that?

Eagle fans will always try to make light of others championships since they have ZERO Lombardi’s themselves.

No teams fans in the NFL hold their regular season wins so near & dear.

Eagle fans will always act like they are right on the brink of that championship, then say “wait until nest year” in January & February.

But do Eagle fans know what the word hypocrite even means? Let me help ya out there Skippy:
    Definition of HYPOCRITE
1: a person who puts on a false appearance of virtue or religion
2: a person who acts in contradiction to his or her stated beliefs or feelings.

The statement that regular season wins are championships in Philly have nothing to do with being a hypocrite Chucky. But you just keep being angry about your empty championship trophy case & call others things that are totally out of context.

Maybe getting yourself a couple of those regular season wins hats & shirts that are mandatory bragging gear in Eagleland along with a cheesesteak might make ya feel better. BTW, don’t forget a dictionary while you’re at it.
