Buddy Ryan will watch sons, then undergo surgery for cancer

Ryans AP

Buddy Ryan is scheduled to have surgery on cancer that has spread from his glands and spread to his neck.

But first he has a football game to watch.

Cowboys defensive coordinator Rob Ryan said that his father, the former head coach of the Eagles, delayed the surgery until after Sunday’s game between the Cowboys and Jets.

“He knows this is a big thing for him and a big thing for the Ryans,” Rob Ryan said via ESPNDallas.com. “He’s about the only guy who’s beat cancer about every time. He’s been through it about four or five times so I’m sure the prognosis is great for him because he always wins.”

Both Ryan sons can’t win Sunday night, but Buddy Ryan has to appreciate that his boys have come so far in the NFL while essentially mimicking their father’s brash style.

Never was an Eagles fan, but those Buddy Ryan Eagle teams were fun to watch back in the day, with Summerall and Madden up in the booth at the Vet.

    Good luck Buddy.

skoobyfl says:”Everybody loves you Buddy…”??? Obviously you’re not much of a football historian. Hopefully he recovers but much of the NFL hated this guy. And he was an awful head coach. His roster had tons of talent but he only cared about one aspect of the game.

Buddy obviously doesn’t ALWAYS win, he’s a .500 coach in the NFL. And he lost every playoff game his teams played.

Coming from someone one just lost his father in February, I truly wish the Ryan family the best of luck.

It’s a tough battle as a family and only a few prevail. You would think after all the billions that as been raised in cancer research that we could have come up with something other then radiation and chemo. Non the less, good luck and hold in there. Family is the only thing we really have in life.

    p.s go Cowboys! :)

Those buddy ryan days as coach of the eagles, was when non- eagle fans respected the eagles. Cant say that now… The eagles sold their pride for a few wins. Good luck Buddy!

You always know exactly what you’re getting with any one of the Ryan clan. You may not like them, but you gotta respect them. Blessings on all the Ryan’s.

Buddy Ryan is one of the greatest defensive coaches of all time. Its very rare that a legend like him would have two sons in prominent positions on two historic franchises. Amazing football family. Love em or hate em.

On a sidenote, It’s funny that Rex Ryan is actually friendly with Kevin Gilbride. Rex chalks it up to a heat of the moment situation between his pops and Gilbride.

Gilbride is real good at coordinating offenses against Ryan defenses. Just something to keep in mind. I remember Baltimore had a long stretch where they didn’t even give up a 100 yard rusher and then Gilbride coordinated a Giants offense that ran for over 200 yards against them. Let’s see if The Giants do that to Dallas and The Jets this year.
