Report: Grossman to start for Redskins

Washington's Rex Grossman throws a pass during a preseason NFL football game in Indianapolis Reuters

With “none of the above” not an option, the Redskins need to make either John Beck or Rex Grossman the starting quarterback for Week One.

Jason LaCanfora of NFL Network reports that the starter will be Grossman.

Per LaCanfora, the decision was made over the weekend.  Some would say it was made before Thursday’s preseason finale, given that Grossman got the night off along with other starters — and that Beck played, along with the scrubs.

It’s surprising that the Redskins didn’t keep the decision closer to the vest, assuming that the decision has indeed been made.  Then again, does it really matter if the Giants know who’ll start?  They’ll be defending against the Shanahan system, not against a guy like Tom Brady or Tony Romo.

The fact that no one would confuse Beck or Grossman with Brady or Romo makes it a lot easier, too.

The Redskins starting offensive line played the entire first half with Beck.

Also, I love when someone who has probably never played a down of football in their life calls an NFL player a scrub. Genius.

Shocker. Let’s see, start a guy who has produced 559 yards of total offense in his career with a PR of 62 or an experienced guy with a career PR of 70… Anyway, best of luck Redskin fans.

Say what you want about the Skins and Beck and Grossman…but there are only two QB’s in the NFC East who have taken teams to the Super Bowl Manning and Grossman! If Rex and or Beck do what’s asked of them that being don’t lose the game just manage it the Skins running game and defense will do the rest…the Steelers, Jets and even Ravens used this theory with rookies Rothlisberger, Sanchez and Flacco.

  21. stunzeed5 says: Sep 5, 2011 1:49 PM

You put Tom Brady in the same sentence with Tony Romo. That’s very embarrassing journalism.

Seriously, you did. I had to do a double take, but it’s there.

As Donald Trump says: You’re fired.

Remember, nobody expected Mark Rypien’s 87′ season either, and Grossman reminds me of the Ripper.

Youre right! Grossman is way better than Romo because he went to an NFC Championships. Trent Dilfer was better than Dan Marino! Eli with a better playoff record is better than his brother! I’d take Kerry Collins or Jake Delhomme over Romo any day! 5th highest rated passer of all time means nothing.

  41. hendawg21 says: Sep 5, 2011 2:11 PM

If you take a serious look at it the Skins may be in the best of shape when it comes to the QB spot as things don’t change much whether Rex or Beck however…look at what looms for these teams who highly depend on their QB’s

Philly if Vick goes do you really think VY a.k.a Psycho can get it done?

Giants if Manning goes down do we even know who the back up is and do you trust them to get it done?

Cowboys well even with Romo we’ve seen and do you really well we saw last year with the backup what’ll happen.

Colts highly depend on Peyton they look god awful without him

Patriots again without Brady aren’t the same team.

basically the teams with the so called franchise/elite QB’s are in far more trouble if the starter gets hurt than the Redskins would be.

  42. sadskinsfan89 says: Sep 5, 2011 2:13 PM

I would say the skins have a better shot winning week one than the giants. They have looked pretty rough. HAIL

  61. truecowboyfan says: Sep 5, 2011 3:10 PM

Romo is one of the best QB’s in the NFL and he is in the NFC East… that’s why he’s being mentioned in the same sentence as Brady. Think before you let the truth be blinded by Cowboy Hatred.

Secondly, I think Grossman is going to have a good year. This is the best system he’s been in since college. I think the Redskins will contend this year for the east…

  62. kevpft says: Sep 5, 2011 3:14 PM

What the heck is going on in Washington, anyway? It’d be one thing if they simply had Grossman as their starter all along, or Beck, or even a simple competition with a clear winner (see: Denver).

But there have been so many different messages, so much contradiction, so much seeming confusion about what they’re doing. They skip the draft at QB with no clear starter, then spend weeks telling us how great Beck is, then Grossman gets the nod at the last minute (maybe)?

What’s the purpose of all this? They could have easily picked up a great QB in the draft. Being coy about QBs, with these two QBs, is not going to be a competitive advantage.

The only thing that seems to fit is either gross incompetence/bad judgment, or an actual attempt to go for the #1 draft pick next year. Both of those still seem crazy, though. I can’t figure it out.

  63. benjic21 says: Sep 5, 2011 3:16 PM

As lifelong Skins fan, i was expecting to Suck Ass this year, then i was sucked into the unknown hope that is John Beck. Now that Pickasarus Rex has been named starter, guess it is back to Reality of Sucking Ass AGAIN! BOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We have seen him lose games over and over again, if you are content with losing at least give the New Guy a Shot.

  64. trigzter says: Sep 5, 2011 3:17 PM

    hendawg21

Yet Grossman or Beck will win in big games? Talk about getting off the drugs.

Cowboys-Felix Jones, Dez Bryant, Miles Austin. Who do the Redskins have to counter that? They have a poor man’s Jason Witten in Cooley and Orakpo just isn’t up to Ware level yet.

No counter arguement to the Giants?

If you can’t see the skins finishing last, then you’re letting your bias get in the way a little too much.

  65. davidgq says: Sep 5, 2011 3:17 PM

For the past 10 years, the Eagles have been too 8, Giants 4, Dallas 3 and Redskins 2.

So the only fans that can talk smack are the Eagles. Funny when I see Cowboys fans talk tough but don’t look up their own record. Same for Giants fans. So spare the insults on the Redskins because your teams aren’t that great either.

Like posted above, Giants made 4 games. Redskins 2. Cowboys 3. Big whoopee. Unless you are in more than 50%, don’t pat yourself too much. You are as bad as our team. It’s all good man. One thing im not doing is parading around talking about how great the eagles will be. Just because we signed big names doesn’t garuntee anything. I just think VY is about as solid of a backup as you can have in this league. He’s not exactly traditional, like Vick, but what I like about that is the offense doesn’t have to dramatically change if he comes in.

We won, the Skins, Eagles nor Cowboys haven’t in 16 years and counting.

Everyone snickers when Rex’s name is mentioned and I’m really not sure why. The man is 22-15 as a starter in the NFL and took his team to the Superbowl. Keep laughing. Keep predicting 2-14 for the Skins. But be prepared to eat it later in the season.

Riding a defense’s coattails for 3/4 of those “wins” is why. We know what we otherwise see from The Doughboy.

    skins…..4-12

I totally agree. Its easy to see a team that went 6-10 and lost 6 games by 3 points or less regress. Especially In light of the fact they have

    A. Significantly upgraded their roster in almost every position. D and O Line, WR, DB, LB, RB, and some would argue QB with putrid McNugget play last year.

    B. Have very favorable schedule.

    C. 2nd year in system

    D. Flushed Turds, i.e. Albert and Donny

So yes, I think they could easily finish 0-16, although they will probably luck out and pull off a victory in the stretch where the play the Panthers, Bills, 49′ers, Dolphins, and Seahawks.

I wasn’t going to mention that I was being facetious, but someone of your limited intelligence probably needs some help. Oh… facetious is another word for sarcasm. You dont need help with sarcasm do you??
